5.2 from me, longest run ever for me!

Total is 2139.5

Went on a new route that in testing out for 10k practise. Didn't do it all, turned halfway but got back into town, felt good so went the long way home.

MelanieCheeks · 27/01/2015 06:54

Training last night - they split us into groups. Group 1 - those who are doing a half or full marathon in the next few months. Not me, though I MAY consider Belfast half in September.

Group 2 - those doing a 10k in the near future - yes me, I have several planned. OK they said, run this nice easy 5 miler tonight. My Garmin tells me the route was just under 10k , so I'll add that 6 miles to make it 2140.3

How could using a watch to pace you be cheating? Does it make you magically faster?

Mayvis · 27/01/2015 07:12

Neeko · 27/01/2015 07:13

Well done Mayvis and Edith on your longest runs. Smile

AggressiveBunting · 27/01/2015 10:30

8 long treadmill miles from me this afternoon makes 2153.5

Also, total kit fail. I was buying some new road shoes today as my old ones were totally treadless and I saw these lovely neon pink shorts from Under Armour so decided to treat myself. Wore them for my run. Got off the treadmill, thinking I still looked pretty cool, and then remembered why people buy running shorts in dark colours- massive fanjo sweat patch. Lovely. Walked back to my apartment holding my water bottle at crotch height.

Mitchy1nge · 27/01/2015 10:49

Grin that made me laugh! but poor you though!

much respect for 8 miles on a treadmill, I recently ran for YEARS and my brain was screaming in agony at the psychological torture and when I stopped it had only been a mile and a bit Blush is a whole different kind of running, I clearly lack the mental toughness

emummy · 27/01/2015 10:52

Thanks for sharing AgressiveBunting, now I know what clothes to avoid! Never mind, probably no one noticed!
3.75 from me, did a circuit of 3 hills, total climb 113m and managed to keep pace quite steady so all good. Have rewarded myself with lovely gluten free lemon wafer biscuits.
2157.25

AggressiveBunting · 27/01/2015 11:23

Yup- treadmill sucks. I make myself playlists the night before and even then I have to do the 5 more minutes trick to keep myself on it.

actiongirl1978 · 27/01/2015 11:41

I think I saw the theory that you should know how to pace yourself first before you use devices in a running book somewhere.

Obvs the mumsnet jury is that watches are the way to go which is good as I have one on my birthday list Grin

Adding a mile from PT session warm up. it was my last one after starting with him last september, so I am quite sad I now have to motivate myself. however he checked my deadlift form and it was pretty much spot on, not rubbish as per last weeks gym sesh.

So in the words of the great Bridget Jones, the manager of the other gym is possibly 'just a great big knobhead with no knob'. there, I feel better now.

actiongirl1978 · 27/01/2015 11:44

ha ha ha laughing at crotch covering embarassment!! you poor thing - try a slim sanpro, might soak up some lady sweat Grin I wear one in case I cough while I am running in my shorts as it make them damp and chafe like Blush

AggressiveBunting · 27/01/2015 11:52

I guess one thing about watches is that if you're too rigid about your race plans then you don't take account of how you feel, the conditions etc. and you possibly stop trusting your instincts. I did a training session with our top trail runner in the summer and I asked her how she breaks down a long race, thinking she'd be all technical and she said "I just start running and see how I feel". She uses a 20 quid Casio stopwatch. I do find my Suunto useful for comparing my performance over the same route and seeing where I'm improving, but I don't find the pacing and HR data massively helpful while I'm running if I'm totally honest. Maybe it's because I'm a watch newbie though.

5madthings · 27/01/2015 12:31

I have just been looking at funky coloured.running tights, now I.know to go for dark colours!

Re watches and pacing,my garmin is set to km, so it beeps every km abd gives me the pace for that km. I can scroll through and see my pace all the time but I found that distracting.I seem to run a fairly consistent pace and can generally tell if I have slowed etc.

I do like having the garmjn and then being able to upload my route, interesting to compare runs.

I have a 50 min pace session tonight, hope I feel more awake by then as I feel shattered right now. Craving a sugar fix..

MelanieCheeks · 27/01/2015 12:56

My Garmin is set to km too, and I can glance it at at any time to see how my pace is going. I usually do this at each of the km markers on the parkrun course, and then do little calculations in my head to see if I'm running at pb pace or not.

30 minute time is 6 mins per km, 25 minute time would be 5 mins per km. So I'm trying to keep my pace under 6, and as close to 5 as my body will let me. Each 12 seconds of pace equals another minute onto the 5 km time. If I start to feel nauseous, I'm aware that I'm giving it my all, and a glance at the Garmin will usually confirm that!

twobambinos · 27/01/2015 14:00

2157.25 plus my 4 miles tempo run today is 2161.25 I'm tired.

Lol at knob head and the shorts although they do sound like nice shorts.

Well done those who have done their longest runs ever fair play to ye.

twobambinos · 27/01/2015 14:03

I use endomondo on my phone and it tells me my lap time and my estimated finish time so I know if I'm at pb or not.

Suzannewithaplan · 27/01/2015 15:10

11.69 from me

2172.94

Suzannewithaplan · 27/01/2015 15:22

I us a garmin fr210, I dont keep to a particular pace, just run at whatever speed feels most natural and comfortable, I guess I also unconsciously adjust it according to the distance I'm intending to cover.

(I tell myself I could run faster over a short run but so as not to spoil the illusion I've not actually done any short runsBlush )

In any case there seems to often be a lag on my garmin so that it shows the speed I was doing a few minutes ago.

I looked at the suunto watches and they are pretty expensive, although the same goes for the 'high end' garmins.
I am sometimes tempted to invest in a more sophisticated bit of kit, but then I hold off thinking that something more advanced is bound to come out shortly after I've bought it

Lucy2610 · 27/01/2015 15:53

3.2 for me =
2176.14

EdithDickie · 27/01/2015 19:57

Just one mile for me today - short on time but helped me limber up a bit.

2177.14

Anglaise1 · 27/01/2015 20:21

9.5 miles from club session tonight, jogged to and from, plus warm up run and intervals, very mild and not raining, almost springlike in fact. Despite the dark. Might do a 10k race on Sunday.
2186.64

Neeko · 27/01/2015 20:33

3.22 from me tonight = 2189.86.
There's supposed to be snow coming here tomorrow and Thursday again so that forced me out tonight. Smile

Anglaise1 · 27/01/2015 20:37

Bunting so sorry about your neon pink shorts, it was a timely warning, thankyou! At lunchtime I was looking at some lovely bright coloured bra top and short combos today but as someone who frequently has, cough, loose bladder problems when running races, a light colour is not a good idea, however pretty it looks. I'll definitely be sticking with black. It hides just about everything, thank goodness.

runtothehills · 27/01/2015 20:48

Hi, can I join? I am, I admit, a long time lurker. Love the thread for the fact it encourages runners from all walks of life and all stages! I've been running for about 2 1/2 years. I'm a trail/hill runner, never really enjoyed road/pavement running, based up in north east Scotland. I've got a few key races this year and would welcome the support and commeradere that this thread seems to offer. Can I start by entering my 7 miles of half forrest track, half mountain bike trails I did today. Still a lot of ice and some snow patches but better than the weekend.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 27/01/2015 20:53

Welcome runtothehills (great name!)

4 from me today, tourist dodging in central London, along with runtothehills' 7 = 2200.86

Well done all Smile

I too rely on dark leggings Smile
