Well done Actiongirl1978! One of my coaches says if you have a sprint finish in you you haven't run hard enough Wink. If you can't run 5 miles in 44mins you can't definitely run a hm at quicker than 10min miles!

twobambinos · 26/01/2015 16:20

Well done action girl.
Well done analgaise I am hoping for under an hour and a half for my ten mile race in 2.5 weeks time but I fear it will not happen ?? my long slow run is currently 97mins for 10miles but its not really a long slow run its just whatever I can manage to get around in.

Nothing to add from me today I had a lazy day. Or will we call it a rest day sure

postmanpatscat · 26/01/2015 16:30

Yes feetheart please join us! Last year my time was 2:12:49 and I really want to get under 2:10 if I do it again. I'm undecided whether to go for public ballot (£50) or commit to raising £700 for Breakthrough and do it that way (minimum target £350 each for me and DP).

Anglaise1 · 26/01/2015 17:07

Congrats on your 5 mile race Action. I'd think at that speed you'd be able to do a HM in around 2 hours quite easily. Especially if you had some juice in the tank left at the end. It is pacing yourself that is the difficult thing. You need to set a time and then try and stick to the minutes per mile required...don't set off too quickly or too slowly, for that matter!

Neeko · 26/01/2015 17:40

Where do you all buy your running shoes from? All your shoe talk have got me thinking. Mine are Brooks adrenaline and I really like them but I could do with replacing them soon. I bought them from sweatshop when on holiday. No sports shop in our town does gait analysis so I'd be happy to buy the same ones if I could get a bargain. Smile

actiongirl1978 · 26/01/2015 17:43

I'm interested to know - do you all use a watch for pacing or do you go by feel? there seems to be something of a strongly felt divide in the running community. I don't have anything but a basic casio watch so can only pace myself if I know the distance I have run and therefore I must have looked it up on mapmyrun before I leave. I wonder if pacing with a watch in a race is a bit like 'cheating' Wink

Its a hard one really. I know I can do an easy 10 in just under 2 hrs, but that is paced on feel and I don't actually know the pace till I finish!

What's the MN running opinion Grin

5madthings · 26/01/2015 17:57

For pacing I have mapmyrun on my phone that tells me my pace every so many km, but I just got a garmin forerunner15 and that can show me my pace as well.

I seem to have a consistent pace that feels Ok and not too hard about 10 min miles, going to do some hill runs and pace training to see if I can get a bit faster. But am not too bothered by speed.

HalleLouja · 26/01/2015 18:01

Feet and Postman I am going to go for the ballot for Royal Parks too.

Anglaise1 · 26/01/2015 18:15

For races I've always used a watch - but don't consider it as "cheating" because nearly everyone else uses them too! I like them on trail races for the distance notification and for road races to ensure I'm keeping up my pace. Otherwise I can get slowed down by following the pace of other runners I'm behind because I'm not used to the feeling of running at race pace for the duration of a 10k or HM.
But then I am concerned with speed - I love running for pleasure but love doing well in competitions too a watch is essential for me - I an't do it on 'feeling' alone unlike some people.

ThursdayLast · 26/01/2015 18:32

I always seem to run quicker when racing - I'm not sure why :/ must be the atmosphere and having the small goals (ie other people) along the way.

I've never tried to 'pace' myself. Where I live and run is simply too hilly to try and maintain anything steady.
I prefer the use-gravity-downhill-the-dig-your-heels-in-on-the-way-back-up approach Grin

ThursdayLast · 26/01/2015 18:34

I also don't find crunching all the numbers that much fun tbh.
Though I do like the watch/app to see how I'm doing for time bear the end of a race then aim to beat a certain time IYSWIM

LaughingM · 26/01/2015 19:01

I'm going for Royal Parks too

^shush! Don't tell anyone, it'll be my first and I'm a bit scared!!

5madthings · 26/01/2015 20:48

4.5 from me makes 2121.8

beanandspud · 26/01/2015 21:09

Only adding 2.3 miles here but... outside! Smile

I realise it's not news to all of the proper runners on here but having run on the treadmill for ages I'd rather forgotten about slopes, and hills, and weather.

2124.1

cinnamongreyhound · 26/01/2015 21:43

I think racing makes you run faster but if I have a time in mind I do tend to stick with my garmin as I'm a wussy and always worried if I go by feel ill run out of steam and I know I can run at a certain pace!

No run tonight as my governors meeting went on until 8.10 Shock

originalpiratematerial · 26/01/2015 21:56

Neeko there is a website called sportshoes that is pretty good - i've bought Brooks Adrenalin from them before.

originalpiratematerial · 26/01/2015 21:57

www.sportsshoes.com

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 26/01/2015 22:14

Well done bean Smile

I went on to the Royal Parks website and registered my interest, but didn't get an email to apply for the ballot Sad

Never mind - there is always next year, and I get to run in the Parks during the week anyway Smile

Another vote for sportsshoes.com Smile

Neeko · 26/01/2015 22:25

Thanks Originalpiratematerial and Ohoneohtwoohthree Smile. I'm off to have a look now.

HalleLouja · 26/01/2015 22:28

Just signed up for the Welwyn Half. Wish me luck.

HalleLouja · 26/01/2015 22:29

Ohone the ballot doesn't open until tomorrow.

EdithDickie · 27/01/2015 04:17

I ran 10.2 miles yesterday - longest ever run Grin

The first 3 miles felt horrendous, the next 2 not much better but once I turned and was heading home again I finally got into it and quite enjoyed it. I felt high for the rest of the day and my half marathon in April seems within reach! Smile

On the pacing with a watch I've never heard the theory that it's "cheating". I absolutely love mine. I am pretty crap at pacing myself by feel, some days a 12 min mile feels horrendous and others I'm all over the 10:30 minutes mile and feeling awesome so I like the watch just so I know. Also I have a tendency to shoot off at the gun like a bat out of hell and being able to see my pace helps me force myself to slow down so I don't actually drop dead after the first mile!

EdithDickie · 27/01/2015 04:17

Ooh good luck Halle - when is it?

EdithDickie · 27/01/2015 04:18
