Phone died on me so no official run keeper distance but prob about 7 cold miles taking us to

1985.9

stilllearnin · 24/01/2015 14:54

hester i have this too but on my left foot - and my sore heels would have me hobbling. I got Nike Lunarglide at the beginning of the year, and have had to chuck my karrimor's. New shoes have completely sorted my heels. (feels a bit miraculous)

stilllearnin · 24/01/2015 14:55

will still heel strike of course but so much better!

HesterShaw · 24/01/2015 14:58

Is a heel strike "bad" then?

HesterShaw · 24/01/2015 15:08

Don't worry about that question!

Am reading this. I know nothing but it seems nice and balanced. In any case, it doesn't seem to be anything I should worry about at my stage! :o

Mitchy1nge · 24/01/2015 15:17

don't know if the jury ever returned a verdict on heel/mid/fore foot striking Hester

for me, certainly, learning how to use my heels more (used to run entirely on my toes) seems to be protecting my calves - am back up to a long run of 13 miles, weekly volume probably 25-35 at the moment without recurrence of soleus strain

however I do wonder if it is fucking up my back Hmm I probably don't heel strike as such but am using them more, the left one never touched the ground before, am quite asymmetrical (like lots of people!)

beanandspud · 24/01/2015 15:26

1988.1

Only 2.2 miles to add here. Have been travelling with work all week and couldn't find any time to run/plod. Hopefully back into it again this week with the aim of doing a park run at the end of next month which feels like it should be achievable.

Suzannewithaplan · 24/01/2015 15:28

I found this quite interesting on heel strike

Suzannewithaplan · 24/01/2015 15:31

but I think the overall verdict is that there is no verdict and the running shoe business is doing very nicely!

stilllearnin · 24/01/2015 16:19

Grin Suzanne. In fairness the saleperson told me not to worry about heel strike because not enough evidence that it causes injury. Except in my case it was not helping my bony heels and the new shoes did help loads (even if he thought they would not!)

Suzannewithaplan · 24/01/2015 16:34

I'm in no position to evaluate the biomechanics of it all Stilllearnin.

As with so many area's of life it's very confusing when all the experts say something different, and they all present case which sounds plausibleConfused

originalpiratematerial · 24/01/2015 17:46

I am most definitely no expert but I read something recently that suggested cadence and how much you engage your glutes and hamstrings is way more important that whether you are a bit of a heel striker.

In many ways the whole running thing reminds me of having babies/breastfeeding/weaning etc - so many experts, so many views, all you can do is familiarise yourself and then work out what works FOR YOU.

5madthings · 24/01/2015 18:08

5.2 from me so 1993.3

That was a good run I think, occasionally felt hard but I kept a consistent pace, it is the furthest I have run since last summer?

Anyway I have calculated if I keep to the same pace for my half marathon I could do it in 135 mins, so two hours fifteen minutes. That sounds Ok? My goal is to get round in under two and a half hours. Given I have never done more than 10km before I think that's Ok.

Right I need a shower as I am off out for a belated birthday meal.

I have no idea if I am a heel striker, looking at my running shoes I dont think so.

Anglaise1 · 24/01/2015 18:22

5madthings have you used a prediction calculator to estimate the time for your upcoming HM? This one was accurate to within 30 seconds for my HM time based on my 10k results.

5madthings · 24/01/2015 18:37

Yes I have used that one and a few others, they seem to say 2 hrs 15 to 24hrs 20 mins. I think that's Ok. Have only run 10km a few times Tbh. If I had carried on tonight I would have done 10km in just over an hour, 65 mins. I felt like I could carry on, I was running at a,pace I was ccomfortable with, I could push a bit harder I think.

But am not too fussed about speed. Will do 40 min run on Mon, then 50 pace training on the, so some sprints and hills etc. Then a short run thu and then an hour run next Saturday which will be about 6 mlies.

Am never going to break any records, but given I had never run at all til I drunkenly signed up for a 10km I think that's Ok. And until I started running after Xmas I hadn't ran since sInce sept/Oct? So doing Ok building up the distance :)

5madthings · 24/01/2015 18:37

Duh 2hrs 20, 24 hrs would be very slow!

cinnamongreyhound · 24/01/2015 19:15

Heel strike isn't as efficient afaik, it deadens your momentum which means you have to work harder to push off for the next stride but I'm a firm believer in running naturally. Unless you have a reason to run differently to what is natural to you I think it can cause more problems than it solves.

I've been so lazy today, got home from my run at 10.45 and didn't leave the house again until I came out to babysit an hour ago.

AggressiveBunting · 25/01/2015 01:31

Also, where you strike depends a lot on your shoes. Shoes with a large drop (i.e. the heel is much higher than the toe) will encourage a heel strike whereas minimalist shoes (Vibrams at the extreme end, or some Salomons), or maximalist (e.g. Hoka's, as worn by the world famous trail athlete AggressiveBuntingGrin) encourage or even force a mid-sole strike. For trail runners, mid sole strike is generally preferable as it allows you to be more nimble over uneven ground and reduces the risk of ankle roll because you're not adjusting your foot position once it's landed. But, yes, mid strike puts more pressure on your calves.

Day off for me today. Got over my mid-week motivation slump and looking forward to getting some km in next week.

Suzannewithaplan · 25/01/2015 08:30

?Have you been running in Hokas for long Bunting?
What d'ya reckon to them? ?

AggressiveBunting · 25/01/2015 08:44

I reckon they'll become pretty mainstream on the trailrunning scene because they make a lot of sense for longer races ( save your quads on downhill sections in particular and great foot protection) but they are very expensive. They also dont really work on muddy terrain. There's also the fact that you look like a dick cos people think you're running in those MBT butt toning shoes.

Tiredemma · 25/01/2015 08:57

DP has been away all week and I havent had chance to get out since Tuesday. Hoping to get out and do 4 miles tonight

or I will cry.

Fingers crossed for you, tiredemma!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 25/01/2015 10:43

Hope you get out Tiredemma, I don't like the sound of tears on this thread Smile

It's a lovely morning here. Going out now my porridge has had a chance to settle, planning to do about 8, which will bring me up to 60 miles so far this month. I told DH (in a rash moment, when I hadn't thought things through properly) that I'd like to run 1,000 miles this year, but have revised that down to 1,000 km. I work FT, have quite a long commute and am doing 2 OU courses so it is probably a bit much to expect to fit in that much running as well Grin

Anglaise1 · 25/01/2015 10:58

12 miles from me this morning, half of it easy at 6.5mph fast the last 6 miles a bit faster at 7.5mph. I miss my long slow runs for trail training.
