I was thinking about Paula today when I was struggling to maintain my already laughably slow pace, her record setting marathon pace was something like 5:13

how is it possible? I couldn't do one mile, half a mile, not even a quarter of a mile at that pace

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 22/01/2015 21:38

Anglaise I do this every January, then slowly wean myself back on to everything Smile. I usually drink lots of strong coffee first thing in the morning, but can't drink it after midday or I don't sleep.

I am sleeping a lot better and feeling far calmer as a consequence - and not feeling the need for either a wake up coffee or a relaxing glass of wine in the evening.

I took gels when I ran my marathon, but had given them a go on my long runs so knew what worked for me. I don't like them but I was scared of hitting the wall.

HalleLouja · 22/01/2015 21:38

1825.19 stoopid Garmin didn't get a signal then I forgot but it was roughly 5 miles. Got most of it logged. I struggled along today with the club. Think I am still recovering from the 10 mile race on Sunday.

Suzannewithaplan · 22/01/2015 21:49

?
Re Paula Radcliffe, I heard that she has extremely good running economy coupled with very high aerobic capacity.
I must be the exact opposite of that, I probably don't even go that fast on my bike :o ?

Suzannewithaplan · 22/01/2015 22:02

I always thought that longer legs meant faster running but the more I read about running economy the more it seems to be complex than that and controversial!

I do feel that mine has improved just via running more, but it has also made me thinner so that may be a factor.
Tbh I find it hard to eat enough food to maintain my weight just lately so if I ran more I'd have to up my game on the food front ?

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 22/01/2015 22:03

3.5 miles to add from this morning. I almost always run "empty." I find I get a stitch if I've eaten anything up to about two hours before I run. Apart from bananas. I normally have a banana the morning of a race.

So we are now at 1828.7.
Wow, that's an awesome number!! I remember back in November we didn't even manage 1000, did we? Looks like we will smash 2000 miles this month!

feetheart · 22/01/2015 22:50

At the rate we are going I think we'll get close to 2500 Shock :o

3.5 to add from me - intervals with the club, including one sprint with your arms in the air. Very funny to watch and and very hard to actually do.

1832.2

A great running day all round as we had the funding for our parkrun confirmed and a start date set. I don't think DH has a clue what is about to take over our my life :o

Suzannewithaplan · 22/01/2015 22:55

1832.2/22*31=2581.736
thats the projected total for this month if we stay on our current trajectory!

EdithDickie · 23/01/2015 00:47

VERY exciting feetheart!

AggressiveBunting · 23/01/2015 01:04

Adding 4 from me this morning - 1836.2.

I saw Paula running the London Marathon one year- you don't appreciate how fast the front runners are going till you see them in real life. It is awesome in the original sense of the word. I comfort myself with the fact that I can probably bench press more than her... probably...

Anglaise1 · 23/01/2015 07:03

Feet congrats on your park run funding, that is superb. I'm sure it will be a big success and that your DH understands, I'm sure he will. Its funny how running can take over your life! Sadly we don't have park runs here in France.
Cardiff I used to get stitches when I started running but thought they were due to breathing and not eating? I haven't had one for ages now, regardless of weather I eat 5 minutes or 2 hours before a run.
Paula Radcliffe's record is incredible, 2H15mins for a marathon still way off being beaten, I think the closest someone came is 2H19. The fastest runners are incredible, not just because of their speed (14mph?) but also because it seems so effortless for them.

cinnamongreyhound · 23/01/2015 07:37

Definitely sounds hardcore EdithDickie!

That's a lot to give up at once OhOneOhTwoOhThree, I've always run on empty stomach up until about 10am but with morning sickness had to eat before going. Am back to being able to run on an empty stomach without feeling ill but I'm starving on days I run. Have normal breakfast about 8am and generally hungry again by 9.30-10!! I don't drink and pregnancy makes me go off chocolate Shock but still having tea (2-3cups a day) but not really giving it up!

My hm time is close to elite athletes marathon times, so twice my pace, scary!!!

3 from me due to my friend oversleeping and not enough time to do our normal route, was -7C and my dozy big dog went in the river! 1839.2

Mitchy1nge · 23/01/2015 08:31

-7?!!!

don't suppose is much warmer here, up the road from you, please be above zero for slow joggers please please, nobody gets warm at that pace

cinnamon there is a 50k where we sort of ran together recently - my hm your 10k - it's just an extra lap or two - I think I might sign up and take an actual break at each pit stop, really enjoyed that event. It's not until November?

twobambinos · 23/01/2015 09:01

Suzanne I wished I could lose a few lbs but I seem to eat back all the exercise calories in chocolate mostly ??

Cinnamon my hm is close enough to that too.

I'm also 5ft 2. With short legs and big boobs. I'm yet to find time and bra from the bra intervention but its 30 big big.

I'm planning to do my long run today because have a hectic weekend of eating and drinking ahead and wont get a chance to fit it in. Did my two exercise classes yesterday. A 17km on the exerise bike on tue so I really need to log some running miles this week.

I eat about two hours before a run two Weetabix usually. Boring but it does the job I think.

I am feeling very tired today tho so hopefully ill get into the swing of things when I get out

originalpiratematerial · 23/01/2015 09:22

Hello all! 4.75 miles from me yesterday to add to the total, so 1843.95.

originalpiratematerial · 23/01/2015 09:27

Also, when I posted on Sunday, I don't think my miles got added, because I think I cross posted with postmanpatscat and we didn't take each other's totals into account, so I think that maybe my 10.8 from last week could still be added? I hope that's ok!

originalpiratematerial · 23/01/2015 09:28

I did my run fasting yesterday as I ran to work and it's too early to have breakfast. I do quite like running on an empty stomach.

Suzannewithaplan · 23/01/2015 09:48

?
Twobambinos, I find that adjusting calorie den?sity works well for adjusting body weight.
Eg, to gain weight crips, to drop weight rice cakes and marmite.

The obvious flaw there is that there is no satisfactory substitute for chocolate ?Blush

actiongirl1978 · 23/01/2015 09:50

Well I usually run on empty, but last night I went out with some other mums, had two large glasses of wine, ate chips and calamari, woke up with a mini hangover and so far have eaten banana, porridge and a bagel with nut butter. And I am planning on a run at midday. I'll let you know how that goes...!

I generally feel lighter and more efficient without food. Last week I did 10 miles empty and felt great, though I did nothing but eat for he rest of the day!

One thing I have noticed since I ramped up the exercise ( a week is pilates, gym, intervals, short run, long run) is that I cannot do it low carb. My body just can't cope with the demands and I started to need carbs. I do try to keep the wheat to a minimum as it makes me hungrier than when I started, but I have started to eat a lot more in general. I think the weights make a big difference.

standing there is nothing better than a hamstring stretch from my PT Grin. Mine is also my pilates teacher and I always secretly hope it will be a small class one week and he will stretch us all a bit!

Suzannewithaplan · 23/01/2015 10:12

What sort of hamstring stretch does he do Actiongirl?
Pilates teachers are usually pretty clued up, sort of bordering on physio's Ime.

?

actiongirl1978 · 23/01/2015 10:29

He makes me relax my leg, I lie flat on my back and he stretches till he feels the resistance, he holds there, then pushes a bit more, then he flexes my foot (naughty toes position) and then holds, then twists my foot to the left and the right holding each time. It is absolutely marvellous. He does it all by feel, I can see him concentrating.

It was quite disconcerting the first time though as he rests my foot on his hip to push and it was very odd being in such close physical contact with another man - however we were in the middle of the council gym so all very proper!

It's my favourite bit of my PT session now Grin

actiongirl1978 · 23/01/2015 10:29

I should have said I lie down, he is standing and lifts my leg up straight

Suzannewithaplan · 23/01/2015 10:32

and is he hot, this PT chappie?Wink

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 23/01/2015 10:56

8.6 miles this morning. It was -7C here as well. I very nearly didn't go! But even though it was so, so cold everything looked beautiful in the sunshine and frost.

So 1852.55.

Mayvis · 23/01/2015 11:29

3.44 from me so total now 1852.55

My fastest run was after a massive feast at the Pizza Hut lunch buffet. I felt a bit sick but I was quick (ish). I'm happy to experiment with the 'running on a massively full stomach' for us all Wink
