I'm worried my Garmin won't make it through a marathon at this rate. After just 2.5 hours I had the low battery warning and it is always on charge when I'm not using it.

Mitchy1nge · 22/01/2015 12:30

which do you have? one thing I can't complain about is the battery life on mine, the 220

elevation gain was 81 metres, so prob can't blame it on that Blush

oh well, it's done, tomorrow is a gentle one, Saturday off, long on Sunday (still not that long yet)

Anglaise1 · 22/01/2015 12:44

Hmm I have the forerunner 220 too. Maybe I didn't put it on charge properly last time. I really need to clear the memory again but have no idea how to do it without doing a factory re-set!

5madthings · 22/01/2015 12:57

I got a garmin forerunner 15 this week in aqua, it's fabbytastic, I love it! It has 8hr battery life with gps, longer without, I can do four runs a week before charging it. It can track activity/steps etc as well but I have that turned off as I bike everywhere and it wouldn't track that.

HalleLouja · 22/01/2015 13:02

I cleared my Garmin's memory by attaching it to the laptop. Then I looked at the files on windows explorer and deleted old activities that had already been uploaded.

stilllearnin · 22/01/2015 14:08

Hello can I add my measly 1.3 miles (with a brisk trot either side) BUT I want a pat on the back for stopping when I planned to because I am trying out my dodgy knee and wont know til tonight whether its ok, was very tempting to carry on Smile

Suzannewithaplan · 22/01/2015 16:43

17 miles Shock
yowser Anglaise
I might think about some slightly longer runs when it warms up a bit but just now it's a bit of a mental battle convincing myself that I wont die of the cold.

I just wish sports shoes would hurry up and ship my order, dont they know I need those things

stilllearnin · 22/01/2015 17:10

oh 1799.5 forgot to add up

Anglaise1 · 22/01/2015 18:00

It is easy once you start clocking up the mileage and speed Suzanne. I'd never ran more than 5kms until October 2013 but it's amazing what you can do when you build up your speed and distance when you push yourself and get pushed by other members of the running club.
It was bloody cold this morning though, but better than running in hot weather. The water I took to drink was colder than it would have been in the fridge after 18kms in the freezing fog.

5madthings · 22/01/2015 18:12

I'm going out for a nice easy 5km once the madthings are in bed, looking forward to it.

Also in awe of the long distances, I think a half marathon will be my limit. Will be doing five miles on Saturday, am increasing by a mile a week and that seems fine. Means by four weeks before the half marathon I should be up to 13 mile distance :)

standingonlego · 22/01/2015 19:13

Not much running here, nothing since weekend but have done 2 pt sessions. Monday - crazy circuits and some back/arms weights, today - lots of legs/glutez (squats & dead lifts), back ( rows, chest presses) and some bonus biceps stuff to end. The best bit is having someone else stetch my hamstrings!! Hope to see a difference in my strength!

standingonlego · 22/01/2015 19:15

The weights talk has been useful, thank you folks for encouragement. Pleased to report no major idiots in my gym....just lots of fit county cricket players Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 22/01/2015 19:46

Rest day for me but been hectic elsewhere, VERY cold when I took the dogs for a walk at 6.30!

EdithDickie · 22/01/2015 19:49

11.49 miles for me today Grin

Split over 3 runs - 5 before work, 2.5 at lunchtime, the rest after work. Am doing a 24 hour relay endurance thing in May and multiple runs in a day recommended for training.

I feel pretty hardcore right now! Grin

Tight calves but otherwise okay.

Suzannewithaplan · 22/01/2015 20:06

well you have a point Anglaise, my mileage has increased somewhat since my first try at running a couple of years ago.
Speed less so.
I tell myself it's because Im only 5 ft 2, then again I understand smaller people make better runners (something to do with heat loss and surface area to volume ratio's) so that excuse doesnt really washBlush

5madthings · 22/01/2015 20:08

God Edith that sounds hardcore!

Nice easy 3.2 from me this evening, I really needed that run, just to get out, music on and run and get some headspace. Freaky I think I may actually be becomING someone who likes running!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 22/01/2015 20:28

Good grief Edith Smile

5mad be afraid, be very afraid Smile

Amazing Anglaise Smile

Well done to everyone Smile

I continued my running on empty experiment - had breakfast at 5.45, a couple of glasses of water mid morning and went running at 12.45. I felt both hungry and light at the same time if that makes sense. Had some soup afterwards, and nothing else until I got home an hour ago and made a mahoosive veggie stir fry with noodles.

I ran the same route as last Thursday and was over a minute a mile faster Shock. Dry January, no coffee or chocolate, early nights and lots of running is making a massive difference to my running. I feel so much stronger that even a couple of weeks ago.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 22/01/2015 20:30

1799.5 + 11.49 + 3.2 + 2.5 = 1816.69 wowsers!

Neeko · 22/01/2015 20:49

1816.69 +3.5=1820.19
Felt good to get out now the snow has gone Smile

Neeko · 22/01/2015 20:53

Just read back. Edith that is very impressive.

5madthings. I actually laughed when reading your post as I caught myself thinking "I needed this" when I was out tonight. That's my first run in 8 days and I have become increasingly more stressed and snappy. Feel mentally lighter now.

Interesting re the food and drink testing. I'm so not ready to give up chocolate or coffee though Smile

Suzannewithaplan · 22/01/2015 20:58

coffee and chocolate are good for you...surely?
especially fresh coffee and the extra strong 5000% cocoa chocolate

EdithDickie · 22/01/2015 21:04

Smile Thanks guys Smile

Am a slight legend in my team now - "you're going again?!" haha which is worth feeling vaguely sweaty and gross all day for. Plus feeling a little more confident that I will be able to do the event and not shame myself!

Also been experimenting with empty running - definitely suits me better than on anything very substantial - I definitely like the light feeling. I was a bit too empty this morning though as I hadn't had anything for over 12 hours, even a drink, which was a bit daft really and I certainly had a few minutes of "the wall" as I hit the start of mile 4. My legs felt like lead. It did pass but I think next time a banana on first waking (so about an hour before running) would do me better.

Mitchy1nge · 22/01/2015 21:09

oh I went on empty this morning, apart from black coffee, not exactly on purpose but have gone off breakfast before running after those two spewy incidents and had the same awful stomach pains anyway Confused which is a bit unfair

will prob have a banana tomorrow as that is my most tried and tested food to run on, although not going far or fast

Anglaise1 · 22/01/2015 21:17

Blimey OhOneOhTwoOhThree hats off to you for giving up all that in January. I couldn't give up chocolate and wine that easily! One of the reasons I run is that I can indulge a little Wink
I had a piece of toast for breakfast at 7.30, that was all, then took the dogs out for half an hour before running this morning. I could have gone without drinking anything, but definitely didn't need any food on my run. I think it depends you each person - I can run on fast days without a problem. Never yet hit the wall, even on 30km plus runs, but I will definitely take some food for the marathon. Just not decided what as I'm not used to taking gels etc. and taking anything you aren't used to is generally a bad thing.
Suzanne I'd never heard about the advantage of being smaller for running, but a lot of the top US women are your height. I'm the same height as Paula Radcliffe (1,73m) but the similarity stops there, Grin

5madthings · 22/01/2015 21:24

I prefer to run when a bit hungry Tbh, I like that lighter feeling. Certainly not within two hours of eating or I feel yuck.

I don't drink coffee, but couldn't give up tea or chocolate! I am trying to cut down though as I have a terrible sweet tooth.

Re height, I am also only 5 2. I figure being short/having shorter legs means I may well be slower than someone who is taller with longer legs surely? Plus I have 30gg boobs to carry, so extra weight?
