1020.06 + 3.10 = 1023.16

Fantastic. Tonight's run was very, very wet. Felt great though!

EdithDickie · 12/01/2015 21:18

Oops sorry for the dodgy maths!

HesterShaw · 12/01/2015 21:53

Hello everyone. Thank you for having me yesterday . I ran my whole route this morning, even the hilly bit. OK so I did it back to front so I didn't have to lean into the evil 40mph westerly - I let it bowl me along instead. Is that cheating?

Still only 1.2 miles according to a site I have found on google (I lack devices and gizmoes of any description), but may I add it to the total?

1023.16 + 1.2 Blush = 1024.36

MelanieCheeks · 12/01/2015 22:01

1 mile from my training tonight, when we were concentrating on technique, so 1025.36

Tonight's tips-engage your core, lean forward at 7 degrees, strike your mid foot, relax your shoulders, and use your arms like a piston. And when running downhill, stick your arms out to signal to your brain that you're in control.

feetheart · 12/01/2015 22:25

I wonder if sticking my arms out at other times might make my brain think I am in control? Pre-teen tantrums, odd requests from school, attempts to get accounting package to bloody work? I may have to try it :o

4.8 to add from club run tonight. Felt like hard work though I think that my legs are tired from yesterday's cross country hill-fest.

1030.16

MuseumOfHam · 12/01/2015 22:51

Ha feetheart, being in a new job, I wonder if sticking my arms out in meetings will give the impression I actually know what i'm talking about. No miles as it was my Body Balance night, so my core' s all worked on and my muscles are all nicely stretched ready to do some running tomorrow.

Suzannewithaplan · 12/01/2015 22:54

I've heard that running with the wind behind you doesnt help as much as the same wind hinders when you run into it.

That being the case(?) then no I dont think that constitutes cheating Hester.
Besides, running into the wind is bad for the complexion, we don't all want thread veins now do we

originalpiratematerial · 12/01/2015 22:57

Hi all, just a short 1.6 miles on the treadmill from me today, but better than nothing I guess.

1031.76

JapaneseMargaret · 12/01/2015 23:20

This thread is great for picking of lots of useful info! 3.3 from me this morning.

1035.06

AggressiveBunting · 13/01/2015 03:00

It's raining, it's pouring....couldn't face the trails today so did a shorter run on the treadmill. Will have to try to make the km up later this week. That said, I was pleased with my pacing as I was wondering if running longer distances would slow me down on shorter runs, and it seems it hasnt, so that's good.

Adding 7.5 to make 1042.56.

kiwikaterpillar · 13/01/2015 06:16

Thanks all for the advice on calorie intake. Will aim to increase to around 1500 a day and hopefully will feel more energised for the runs too.

Rest day today so no miles to add from me. Was thinking about the best way to get from being able to run5-7k on an ok/good day up towards the 12-15km range. Seems like quite a big leap and to be honest I think it may be a lot to do with mindset but any tips/programme suggestions would be welcomed! When I get to the 7km mark my legs seem to turn to jelly at the moment.

Well, baby in bed, husband at ice hockey so I'm off to google some basic running/nutrition things as this thread has made me realise how little I know!

emummy · 13/01/2015 10:35

2.8 miles today and it's absolutely freezing! Wee snow flurries, wind straight from the Cairgorms, yuck! Anyway, did a warm up jog then hill repeats, managed one more than last time so well pleased. Now time for housework before scary kinetic release massage
1045.36

HesterShaw · 13/01/2015 11:07

I did six days on the trot from nothing, so therefore today is my rest day. I'm glad - it's howling windy! However we have a warning for severe gales tomorrow so I'll probably run about 200m before giving up. The trouble is with a westerly wind is that at some point you HAVE to run into it. Every cloud though - I'm in Cornwall so the wind isn't nearly as cold as yours emummy!

HesterShaw · 13/01/2015 11:08

"On the trot" being absolutely nothing to do with what we were discussing a couple of days back, just to be clear...

EdithDickie · 13/01/2015 11:50

Haha Hester!

Also in Cornwall (east) and it's switching between vile and sunny. Think I am calling today a rest day but have planned to run with colleagues after work tomorrow.

I have a question - is it usual / advisable to eat during a half marathon? I usually like to run on a moderately empty stomach or I feel sick but wondering if something along the way might be a good idea? Thanks Smile

feetheart · 13/01/2015 11:59

I also tend to run on a mainly empty stomach (otherwise I will either throw up or have the aforementioned problems!) and have managed 3 half marathons on water and Jelly Babies. I did take an energy drink at one station on my first half but it tasted disgusting and dried my mouth so I ditched it quickly. I think the Jelly Babies may be psychological but that's fine with me :)

holmessweetholmes · 13/01/2015 12:09

3.4 hilly, windy miles for me, making 1048.76 by my reckoning. I regularly do that run to the next village along country lanes. It includes a looong, relentless hill which passers-by regularly compliment me on making it up!

emummy · 13/01/2015 12:14

It could be worse Hester, 15 miles to the west of me they've had snow for ages!
I tried jelly babies on a run but gradually got a bit sick of them. Recently I've found dried cranberries good. Ahead of my first half marathon I'm planning to test out various gels etc, but might just end up back with the cranberries! I have read that you don't need food over that distance, but perhaps that's when you're more used to doing it?

actiongirl1978 · 13/01/2015 12:26

Hester Grin

Apparently love hearts are good. I tried haribos a few weeks ago, and the cramps I got 5 minutes later were out of this world painful. So no further jelly sweets for me! (to qualify this, I had been running for over 1.5hrs at this point so thought I could justify a sugar boost!)

ThursdayLast · 13/01/2015 13:09

Also in Cornwall (mid)

Today is cross train day - indoors Grin

10.42 miles from me =1059.17
headwind for 5 miles and rained for about 3 miles

emummy · 13/01/2015 14:40

Well, been for Kinetic Chain release and survived! Some bits were quite painful, yes that's you piriformis muscle, but otherwise it was ok. And now, it's the strangest feeling, I feel like a machine that's been oiled! All my joints feel smooth, my arms are all loose, it's amazing!

Suzannewithaplan · 13/01/2015 14:44

also, re eating before and during endurance exercise according to this article
'women use more fat at any given exercise intensity than men do'
so (all other things being equal) women can go longer than men before topping up glycogen stores.
If the article is correct than I guess that would be one factor in the increasing success of women in ultra long distance endurance events?

5madthings · 13/01/2015 15:03

I am waiting for mrmadthing to get back and then am going for a run, typically it's now raining!

Re food, I run much better on an empty stomach, prefer to leave at least two hours after eating, often run just before a mealtime when feeling a bit hungry. The longest I have done is 10km, so am wondering how I will get on doing the longer half marathon distance. I can't imagine wanting to snack on a run, I don't like jelly babies much either. Shall see how I feel with training.

Am also debating doing the 5:2 diet, am thinking fast on non running days, does anyone else do the 5:2 diet?

Anglaise1 · 13/01/2015 15:13

5madthings you don't need to eat to complete a half marathon. Generally you can run for 2 - 2.5 hours without needing to replenish your glycogen stores. You just need to drink water. You should eat 2 or 3 hours before your half marathon as with most races - but you definitely don't need to eat during. It is only for marathons and long trail races that you need to eat as well as drink.
I've done 5:2, I lost 5kgs a couple of years ago on it. I usually fast just one day a week now but never have any problem running on a fast day. It isn't for everyone but I found it easy and it has never interfered with my running (I run around 30 miles a week). I wouldn't do a half marathon race on a fast day or the day after a fast day! And I definitely wouldn't fast the week before a marathon or big trail race. But apart from that, no problem.
