glad you are feeling better cardiff and good work cinnamon too! I used to fall asleep all the time when I was pregnant, until the stage when I couldn't sleep at all! cannot imagine getting out early for a run in those days, am in awe!

I did buy some 27p ish multi-vits with iron from Lidl recently, maybe will try taking them regularly. Rarely eat meat, and red meat even less often. I sort of imagine my diet of porridge, eggs, spinach, feta and greek yoghurt will meet all my needs but maybe will ask PT when I see her today. Not really getting my money's worth of gruelling exercise and punitive dietary restrictions from her AT ALL.

Suzannewithaplan · 11/12/2014 10:00

?I'm a lifelong vegetarian so have never eaten red meat but never had a problem with iron levels as far as I know.
Your PT sounds a bit bossy Mitchy??

Mitchy1nge · 11/12/2014 10:56

Does she? I feel bad about portraying her in that way then! She's lovely really. Of course to prevent recurring overuse injuries she is going to advise a reduction (or total cessation but meanwhile back in the real world) of activities that cause them. So far her ideas about trying to involve my heels when running are helping I think, maybe bit early to say though.

Mitchy1nge · 11/12/2014 10:59

I just sort of wanted a Jessie Pavelka type experience with extreme diet and exercise rules, not 'lounge around more, stuff your face a bit' that's all.

ScienceRocks · 11/12/2014 11:00

Glad your back is better Cardiff.

I was going to run this morning but am simply too tired to face the wind (to busy at the moment on almost every front) so will do a Jillian later instead.

I wondered if my breathlessness was due to anaemia, but as it seems better, it must have been half a cold!

Suzannewithaplan · 11/12/2014 11:19

?oh I see Mitchy, perhaps I misread you? She's not strict enough?
Tbh I'm very skeptical of any advice even when given by genuinely qualified experts (as opposed to gurus) it's not that I think they are wrong more that it's very difficult to uncover what is optimal for any one.
We are not machines, our workings are often mysterious and unknowable.

I thought landing on your heel was supposed to be a bad thing? ?

Suzannewithaplan · 11/12/2014 11:22

I'm not sure if I can face the wind either Science I may cycle to the gym (against the wind :( ) and run on the treadmill instead

Anglaise1 · 11/12/2014 11:32

A very windy (the weather not me!) 6 miles this morning with friend. No running tomorrow as a rest day before another 10k race Saturday afternoon. Hope the wind has calmed by then.
328.5

Suzannewithaplan · 11/12/2014 11:38

Then again it is very sunny and I need as much light from the blue end of the spectrum as I can get.

emummy · 11/12/2014 12:35

mitchy my friend swears by some iron rich water - spat one maybe- as she hates taking iron tablets too

Mitchy1nge · 11/12/2014 14:29

never heard of iron rich water, thanks emummy, will definitely look for some of that

I don't think I'll ever be able to land on my heel first, whether that is good or bad I don't know did the jury ever come back on that? but can see the wisdom of at least letting it touch the ground now and then - they never make contact when I'm running off road, and only now and then on harder surfaces and had got to a point where was barely using them even in walk so must look a bit like an autistic child (I have one so hopefully am qualified to compare self) on my tip toes. Ridiculous wear and tear on calves and achilles Confused while other muscles and bits of self that should be working are getting a free ride. Quite a bit of PT session was spent just Doing Walking and working on rolling across whole of sole of each foot, then some dynamic stretches, bit of running with longer stride and use of whole foot (ish) and (apart from spiky roller) my best bit: lying down and being stretched for ages. If I win the lottery (not that I buy tickets) I am getting a live in professional stretching coach for every day :)

Mitchy1nge · 11/12/2014 14:33

am trying to work out how dark and dangerous it will be to try to get my long run before about 9:30 am tomorrow - there is no avoiding running on country roads without pavements or street lighting but I have a ten mile route which keeps that to just about three miles in the middle, and some super hi-viz and reflective gear

otherwise I will end the week on just 4.5 miles from Tues and will seize up Shock

cinnamongreyhound · 11/12/2014 16:36

I definitely heel strike, I walk very heavily on my heels too but I don't want to attempt to change my natural gait, personally I don't think its a good idea.

Mitch how funny, my PT stretched my hamstrings at the end of our session today, holding my leg and then twisting my ankle, it was bloody amazing!!
(And it sort of made up for the hell he put me through in one hour of exercises solely on a mat using my body weight)

I am with you, I need a full time PT if I win the lottery. How am I going to manage when my sessions finish in January?

And with regards to your comment about Jesse, I am SO with you there! except it am not sure I would hear a word that came out of his lips! I wouldn't be able to concentrate!

So i am logging 1 measly mile in my warm up on the treadmill at PT session.

329.5

Suzannewithaplan · 11/12/2014 16:53

9.27 miles from me making the total 331.77

I ran outdoors after all, the wind wasnt a direct head (or tail) wind so not as much of a problem as I thought.
Plus I am getting to grips with the proper deployment of the buff:)

I can see that I need another one to wear as a headband over my ears, not sure whether to buy one or run one up on the sewing machine, I have lots of bits of stretchy fabric that would do the job.

Re running style I land on my forefoot, I think this may be because I learned to run in vibrams Confused

actiongirl1978 · 11/12/2014 16:54

Cinnamon I heel strike on the right more than I do the left. My on clouds have minimised that slightly. I don't think it's a coincidence that my right hip is always stiffer which could be the reason I always suffer more strains in my right leg too.

I know what you mean about not changing natural gait but I certainly have less back ache since I went for a more minimal shoe which encourage mid foot strike.

Oh and Mitch, my PT has never mentioned nutrition, I was always slightly disappointed he never questioned me on my food intake for some odd reason!

actiongirl1978 · 11/12/2014 16:57

Wow Suzanne, vibrams for learning is hardcore! My PT wears them, extols the virtue of them all the time. What made you switch back to 'normal' trainers?

Suzannewithaplan · 11/12/2014 17:06

ok, I should explain further, when I first started running I wore only vibrams but it was all treadmill, I still use vibrams on the treadmill and for all strength training

Running on concrete in vibrams just feels too brutal so I wear cushioned shoes outdoors but have so far stuck to zero (Or very low drop)

I wish they made cushioned vibrams because I really like having my toes spread out like that

actiongirl1978 · 11/12/2014 17:12

Did you struggle with your Achilles when you started to wear them?

Suzannewithaplan · 11/12/2014 17:20

no achilles problems Actiongirl.

only wear flat shoes (afaik heels can shorten the achilles?) and generally pay attention to strengthening and stretching calves so that may have helped?

actiongirl1978 · 11/12/2014 20:50

I may well give them a try at some point... Haven't seen them in shops, only online?

ThursdayLast · 11/12/2014 20:55

Evening all - my running bud and I did an urban 5.5mikrs this evening. Due to a broken down bus it took me bloody longer to get to her house than the run itself!

My legs are aaaaaaching now though, really feeling it in my knees

standingonlego · 11/12/2014 22:21

Adoring mention of Jesse up thread...I thought of Jesse pinkman in breaking bad ad was confused (I love him Blush)

My PT was just despairing...training is great but no use if you undo all your good work in the kitchen / chip shop

Suzannewithaplan · 11/12/2014 22:58

I've only ever bought them online Actiongirl, I imagine shops stock them I've just never looked.

Have you decided what to do about the 'early morning possibly in the dark' run Mitchy?

I've occasionally run in the dark but there was street lighting and pavements so which is a different kettle of fish to country roads!

Suzannewithaplan · 12/12/2014 00:20

far better to train and have chips than not train and have chips!

Seriously Standingonlego, chips and what have you may mean that you settle at a higher bodyweight but we are all healthier for exercising regardless of how we eat
