4.55 with my striders, supposed pyramid sessions but did not over exert self

Club session tonight, 40 minute warm up run before strength exercises in the sports hall. And a 'pot' after to celebrate 2 birthdays. One of which was the oldest club member, at 70 he is still running 10kms in 52 minutes.

I don't know whether to be inspired or depressed by that 70 year old! I haven't done a sub 1h 10k since about 2008 Confused

just wondering how many miles you people get out of your shoes and what brand they are? I have been loyal to Saucony for a while now but here I am barely 300 miles in to my latest pair and my little toes are working their way through the fabric already. They are cheap(ish) but not great value I think, average somewhere between 90-110 miles a month, I know people who do almost that a week, so 3 months of use is not a lot to ask is it?

TheBigBumTheory · 09/12/2014 22:26

I'm always inspired by the older runners..after all I'm not going to get younger, so no point in trying to beat the 20 somethings. I'm aspiring to be like my friend who wins the older vet categories.

3 from me tonight, very wet and windy. I fell over on a muddy dark corner and got really filthy.

No damage done Grin

Suzannewithaplan · 09/12/2014 23:02

be inspired!
the 70 year old guy is clearly an outlier, he will have declined in CV capacity compared to his 40's or 50's but even people like me with average or below average constitutions will be in far far better shape in their 70's and beyond if they pursue regular and reasonably intense exercise.

Sofa dwellers start to go down hill at around 30

cinnamongreyhound · 10/12/2014 08:16

Saucony do tend to go through but it doesn't mean you can't wear them anymore. I bought a pair of brooks and fell in love with them but my new trails are Adidas after trying on a million pairs I liked them best. They're a Christmas present so haven't tried them yet out in the forest.

I whimped out of running last night, my friend wanted to go after 8 and I was knackered. She had company, I went yesterday and Im going Thursday am, parkrun and cross country at the weekend so that'll do this week!

No running today, did boot camp in lovely showers of sleet instead! Will be warm again by about 5 o'clock I think!
I have Saucony guide 7s, got them in March and they're still ok. Have probably done around 500 miles. Would expect them to last about a year really. Will be replacing them in new year, watching the price drop on sports shoes.com....

actiongirl1978 · 10/12/2014 14:28

I managed 7.6 miles today. I wanted to do 10 miles but during the week it is hard as there are so many fast cars on our country lanes!

Still it was a challenge, a few long hills and driving rain which would have been fine except I went out jacketless as the sun was out when I left... So ended up using my buff as a makeshift hat.

300.9 I think and rounding up from Anglaise's .25!

feetheart · 10/12/2014 14:38

We have a whole bunch of older runners at our club - the oldest is 81 and, with his 79 year old running buddy, ran our local half marathon in October. Our cross country team includes a 79 year old lady and my regular running group at the club includes a 71 year old who can put us all to shame and finished the half in well under 2 hrs, winning his age category.
I only started running at 46 and still want to be doing it when I'm 70 :)

cinnamongreyhound · 10/12/2014 16:10

I'm pretty much the youngest at my club (other than the juniors) at 34 and almost the slowest!!! We have one of our members daughters who joined last year who are in their early 20's the rest are close to or over 50 and still much quicker than me Sad

Anglaise1 · 10/12/2014 18:14

I agree age isn't important with running as with some sports. I didn't start running until 47 but thanks to good genes more than anything, I'm faster than other much younger people in the club but not as fast as a few older than me. Endurance runners are often older and I've been overtaken in long races by women a lot older than me. I'm in awe too, and just hope to still be running when I'm 70 (knees permitting).
5,6 miles from me today, nice easy run. Not on my plan from the club coach...does anyone else have plans to follow and do you follow them to the letter?
306,5

Suzannewithaplan · 10/12/2014 18:27

for strength and cardio I have plans/routines but I modify them constantly, I like to go by 'feel' Wink

Mitchy1nge · 10/12/2014 19:17

I LOVE plans. Making them and then deviating from them.

Current plan is to find a compromise between what I want to do and what PT advises (no running on consecutive days, no hard or fast or long runs). Main thing for me is the long run I suppose, am sure that is how best to preserve my running powers.

HalleLouja · 10/12/2014 19:31

5.2 to add from my run club yesterday makes 308.7. Was the same route I lost my mojo on a few weeks back. Much stronger yesterday so I feel I have battled that demon.

There is a lady at my run club who is 71 and is the same speed (give or take a few seconds) as me. She is awesome.

HalleLouja · 10/12/2014 19:32

Nope 311.7. Spot the accountant.

Anglaise1 · 10/12/2014 19:41

I lost my mojo in October after a very difficult trail run. I was tired and my legs didn't work properly. It was all due to a severe iron deficiency that resulted in anaemia. I take an iron supplement daily now and feel sooooo much better. I'd never realised before how much of a problem losing iron is (especially for women) when you run regularly.

Suzannewithaplan · 10/12/2014 20:55

funnily enough Anglaise, I was just listening to a dr karl podcast in which he discussed iron deficiency in female athletes, intense training causes the release of some chemical or other which inhibits iron absorption, also running can cause bleeding in the viscera (because of all the vibration, perhaps lack of cushioning visceral fat is also a factor) which further exacerbates the problem.

I've read various things about older women being better at endurance events and wonder if this is partly due to physiological changes related to menopause?
Certainly iron levels could be higher and that would lead to higher aerobic capacity.

Then again too much iron is toxic and believed to be one reason for lower levels of heart attacks in women below menopause (as compared to men)

LaughingM · 10/12/2014 21:54

Oooh that's really interesting about the iron... I used to be anaemic quite frequently but my periods have settled down in the last few years, so I was surprised when my dr said my iron levels were low again in the summer. Maybe it's running related not that i've been doing any intense training.

Anyway, an enjoyable if not very challenging 2.4 from me this evening.

314.1

Suzannewithaplan · 10/12/2014 22:49

www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/drkarl
november 20th episode, starts around 3:50 into the podcast if anyone cares to listen

Mitchy1nge · 10/12/2014 22:50

I hate taking iron because I end up as a sort of giant poo on legs Confused but am always deficient despite my great love of spinach every day. Maybe I should reconsider, never knew it could be running related.

Suzannewithaplan · 10/12/2014 22:58

I used to take floradix which seems not to cause constipation but these days since I'm well into 'the change' anyway I dont really worry about it.

Anglaise1 · 11/12/2014 06:56

Thanks for the podcast link Suzanne I will listen later today. Once your periods stop then you are less at risk of iron deficiency, that's for sure. I'm not there yet but my periods aren't very heavy.
Mitchy contrary to popular belief spinach is not the best source of iron, nor are other green veg because the iron is not easily absorbed by the body from veg. The best source is from red meat, so when you don't eat a lot that doesn't help! Vitamin C helps a lot in the absorption of iron from veg and tea is a great inhibiter, the worst, in fact, for iron absorption. My doctor said I should really either give up tea or running but he understood that as a Brit giving up tea would be impossible. As is giving up running!

cinnamongreyhound · 11/12/2014 08:23

I have read that about tea but I don't drink masses. I've never had an iron problem but when I lost 5 1/2st 2 1/2 years ago I went to give blood and was turned away because I was anaemic, not that I noticed! I started taking supplements then and have been fine. I find running counteracts any constipation problems anyway Xmas Grin

4 miles from me in the windy forest this morning with two friends and doggies 318.1

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 11/12/2014 09:12

4.4 miles this morning from me up to the Royal Mail sorting office and back to collect a parcel I'd missed.
My back feels much better today. I went with the heat packs and ibuprofen combo suggested on this thread, many thanks. Along with 48 hours strict no exercise, I felt good this morning, not that I was breaking any land speed records!
