Everyone here keeps sabotaging my careful NYD and Saturday parkRun plans Xmas Sad. Looks like a normal non-parkrun few days after all.

Fabulous festive running...I went on scales today and am at my heaviest ever (expected when pg of course)...so 2015 need to get myself sorted!

5 miles with run club to add here makes 958.4. Had a great run today. Loved it. Five miles much nicer than 10 Grin.

Sorry to hear your news cinnamon.

I've been awol over Christmas so been catching up on everyone's running news - some amazing festive distances and training! I haven't been out much for various reasons but I've really enjoyed it every time I have had a chance, which is good!

So 12.2 miles to add from me from the last few weeks making the total 953.4. Do you think we'll make it to 1000?? I'll go out tomorrow to do my bit!

941.2 with 3 dog jog miles from me and an uninvited canine companion from the farm

interesting conditions underfoot in my road shoes on the tracks that I've carefully churned up with horses, before rain filled them, before it all froze solid

it is good it has a bit valve and just shrinks as you drink.

Then again there's always the camelbak style bladder solution, those plastic bladders are tricky to clean though!

A soft flask sounds like a great idea, much easier and less painful to carry around than the solid flask. I did a 20 mile trail race in the rain and mud last summer and was fine except for the raw skin around my waist thanks to the belt and rigid plastic flask I took with me.
Thanks Suzanne - a buff is bandeau in French, I have a couple of them. I must come across as an idiot as I've only been running since living in France therefore lack a lot of English vocabulary for the sport.Blush

I ordered a soft flask online it came today in a flimsy plastic envelope.
I cut the envelope open with scissors, and cut into the bottom of the flask:(
gah! Angry

I noticed that the bottom was heat sealed so I got a lighter and melted the cut edges together, it appears to have worked!.

handy little thing but rather pricey for what it is, and needs better packaging Angry

I've heard of the 80:20 thing Anglaise.
I pretty much run at a steady pace, though there are a few steep hills so that ups the intensity a bit.

buff is a hat/scarf thingy:

that does sound like a punishing run Actiongirl, you must have some grit to keep going for 5 miles.
I hope your cold doesnt develop into anything.

It's very hard to dress for the changing climate, I know some on this thread are happy to start out cold but I find that if I start cold I cant get going properly.
I tend to take too much clothing but run with a very small backpack so I can take things off and stuff them in it when I start to overheat.
Being too cold makes me feel a bit anxious!

Suzanne my coach advocates training 3 or 4 times a week. IMO he puts too much emphasis on the speed training and not enough on long and slower (I really like the Racing Weight book by Matt Fitzgerald where he quotes endless studdies which show 80:20 is best for performance, 80 slow, 20 fast training sessions).
Do you do speedwork in your 10 mile sessions? I can only do intervals and tempo for shorter distances, usually 7 or 8 miles max, including 40 min warm up.
What's a buff??

my pony tail is not yet substantial enough to support a buffBlush
I've been thinking about sewing some loops to the top so that my ears could keep it in place.

What I'd like for the cold weather is some sort of balaclava which has holes for mouth and nose, but that would be like running in a gimp mask wouldnt it Shock

Perhaps I should smear my face with goose fat (à la mode de channel swimmer) to stop the cold wind giving me thread veins Wink

Suzanne, do you have tied back hair? I loop my buff over my bun or pony tail and keep it snug between top lip and nose. Makes a huge difference to breathing, especially when it is this cold!!

Adding 5 rubbish miles. Everything hurt, it was too cold, I had to have a paula radcliffe in the woods and I walked home in temps of about -6 wearing thin running gear. I have a cold and I want to sulk!

On the plus side it is due to warm up in the next few days so I might get back into the swing of things soon.

So current total is 934.2

Cinnamon so sorry to hear about your FIL. Best wishes to your dh, such a difficult time.
Total of 5 miles from me; went to woods to run and abandoned it halfway through as was just too icy. So came home, local streets all well gritted so did 5k and got a pb! Perhaps I should do a longer warm up run every day!

?
Anglaise does your coach advocate running only on alternate days, or just having at least one or two days a week where you don't run??

I am not sure if 10 miles every other day is less stress to the musculoskeletal system than 5 miles every day?
I enjoy the 'buzz' from longer sessions that's why I prefer longer runs, 5 miles used to work for me but now it's just not a big enough 'hit' :o ?

Thank you all, will hopefully know more today and be able to make more plans. My parents are a lot younger so this will be the first time I'll have to do anything like this. Although dh's parents aren't together they are still married do assuming most things will go to mil and there won't be a lot to sort out. Unfortunately they are 2 1/2hrs drive from is so anything will be time consuming. Dh wants to go and see his dad but not sure whether that will be before or after the autopsy :(

On a more cheerful note, one of the coaches at my club just posted this £30 normally but £15 with the early bird offer :)

Cinnamon - so sorry to hear about your FiL. Make sure you take care of yourself whilst taking care of everyone else.

4.2 sparkly miles to add from a club run last night. Hadn't thought about it being slippy until I went to de-ice the car but we took a well-worn route and it wasn't too bad.
I actually got to wear the buff that DS was given after the Boxing Day run and has been wearing ever since but found it made me quite hot (and this from someone who has layers and layers and layers on usually but can manage in two flimsy layers whilst running Xmas Confused)

Sorry to hear the sad news about your FIL Cinnamon Flowers what a horrible way to end the year.
Suzanne yes, that is a big increase in mileage! My coach is always against running every day as it is important that your muscles get recovery time. Saying that I've run every day for a week now and clocked up some serious mileage because I haven't been teaching and I haven't had the DC. I'm feeling fine on it. A couple of long runs plus shorter 10km runs with speedwork just to mix it up a little. I'm supposed to be resting this Christmas but need to work off the extra chocolate and wine consumed!

Report
Suzannewithaplan · 29/12/2014 23:09

Anglaise not every day, it's around 10 miles every other day.

I may add in some more running eventually but I jumped from 15 miles to 35 per week rather quickly so I feel as if I should play safe and stay at this mileage for a while.

So sorry to hear that you lost your father in law Cinnamon :(
