It sounds good, but I am a really slow runner, I just happen to have quite a low heart rate.
I think to be more realistic I should cross reference it to some other kinds of test.
I also think that if you did an assessment while running you'd get a better result, different muscle groups are activated in rowing and it's the O2 processing capacity of muscle tissues being used(as well as heart and lungs) which is being measured/infered

Anglaise1 · 02/12/2014 20:54

Can I join the thread even if I don't live in the UK? I live in France and run with and for a local running club. I've only been running seriously for around 18 months and am quite late to the sport as I turn 50 next year. I've done a lot of competitions in the last year and my PB is 46mins for a 10k and 1h43m for a half marathon. I did a lot of trail races in the summer which I love (the longest 41kms) and have signed up for my first marathon (Rome) next March with some of the other guys from the club so I'm in training for that at the moment. I average around 40-50kms a week, 3 or 4 times a week, including interval and tempo sessions plus I try to get one long run a week.

Suzannewithaplan · 02/12/2014 21:01

we need your French miles Anglaise! please do join in :o
bloody good going and very impressive on the times and distances!

Mitchy1nge · 02/12/2014 22:19

Rome marathon. Envy non è giusto

Anglaise1 · 03/12/2014 08:17

Thanks! I'll add my 15kms from yesterday.
I did a 10k race on Sunday but was 90 seconds slower than last year, I think it might be due to the 2 or so extra kgs I'm carrying...so I'm trying to lose them before my next race on 13th Dec. But I don't want to lose the muscle so need to be careful.

43.5

3.1 miles to add. Am fed up with not being able to run in the evenings, it means at the moment I'm only managing two runs a week.
And it was flipping Baltic out there this morning.

Grumble. Grizzle.

Total is 46.6

MirandaWest · 03/12/2014 09:48

1.9 slightly chilly miles to add. But at least I did go out running (motivational issues at the moment). Slight determination to beat DSs just over 28 min 5k time though Grin

Total 48.5

MirandaWest · 03/12/2014 09:52

Hmm if I could keep up this pace for 5k it would have been definitely under 27 min 30. Need to stay that bit faster...

ScienceRocks · 03/12/2014 12:38

Measly 2.2 miles from me this morning. I started out really well, doing the first 2k in 13 minutes (don't laugh, this is very good for me) but the last 1.5k took me 12 minutes because I was struggling to breathe. I'm not sure if it was just the cold that got me (after the first 2k, I turned a corner onto the busy and quite exposed main road) or if maybe I am getting a cold, but my chest still doesn't feel quite right now a couple of hours on. I meant to do 5k but gave it up as a bad job and walked home Sad

Loving my new GPS watch though!

Anyway, 50.5 is the new total.

Suzannewithaplan · 03/12/2014 12:58

Better safe than sorry Science, no point in aggravating any lung issues!

people who exercise regularly are generally in touch with their bodies enough to know when to not push through discomfort.

Hope you feel better soon :) ?

Anglaise1 · 03/12/2014 13:03

Hope you feel better too, soon Science. A doctor I know says it is always OK to run with a cold if the symptoms are above the neck but dangerous when they are below, so you did the right thing, always listen to your body. There will be another day to run 5k. What GPS watch have you got?

actiongirl1978 · 03/12/2014 13:24

Afternoon everyone, I can log 4.01 miles this morning. It was cold and my leg muscles just burned from start to finish, but I did manage to do it in a good pace, I literally had to grit my teeth though.

What is it with eating after running? Totally starving! Just eaten a chicken leg, some breast, huge salad, bowl of strawberries and banana and Greek yoghurt full fat and I am still hungry!

Anyway thanks for letting me share my lunch choices with you!

54.6

Suzannewithaplan · 03/12/2014 16:38

9.16 from me today, much prefer this colder weather

63.76

Mitchy1nge · 03/12/2014 17:00

from me an astonishing 0.46 on the treadmill under critical gaze of PT (she thinks if I can't stop running that I should do no more than 30 minutes 3x a week, slowly on flat ground and never 2 consecutive days until my calf and ankle and foot and hip deformities are corrected and everything is stronger Shock, she reminds me of nemo's dad 'you think you can do these things mitchy but you just can't' grrrrr)

have heard that above neck/below neck advice too science and hope you feel better

action I find some runs, especially long runs, weirdly appetite suppressing and was a bit stressed on Saturday about the need to refuel v my happy buzzing and not at all hungry state, so wandered around clutching a piece of rocky road from the refreshment stand for the rest of the day

Suzannewithaplan · 03/12/2014 17:15

that's a bit of a harsh prescription Mitchy:(
as is the term 'deformities'
I'm sure 'idiosyncrasies' would be more accurate-no?

Mitchy1nge · 03/12/2014 17:25

heh yes that was my word not hers, everyone has bad habits or compensatory issues somewhere don't they

I am going to try not running on consecutive days if I can help it though, except sometimes I run twice a day so I dunno

Suzannewithaplan · 03/12/2014 17:36

thing is, what causes the lowest amount of mechanical stress, 3 miles a day, 1.5 miles, twice per day or 6 miles every other day.Confused

I suppose the PT would say 1.5 miles every other day, how is anyone supposed to feed an addiction on that meager amount eh.

only joking, of course it's not sensible to risk an injury that would stop you running but are you not tempted to get a second opinion?

Mitchy1nge · 03/12/2014 17:43

not really but I really felt the benefit of tapering, am still pain free as far as original calf thing goes (and it was really niggling worryingly by the week I went over 30 miles) so will heed the general spirit of her advice rather than observe it to the letter

actiongirl1978 · 03/12/2014 17:50

Mitch, I am yet to experience a lack of appetite after running, I'll let you know if it ever happens! Love having an excuse to eat rocky road!

Suzanne, good work on 9 miles when it's this cold, don't you find your muscles take ages to get into the swing of things when it's cold?

Suzannewithaplan · 03/12/2014 17:52

I guess she knows that someone who's into running will tend to err on the side of over (rather than under) doing it so perhaps tailors her advice accordingly?

actiongirl1978 · 03/12/2014 17:52

Oh and sorry, meant to welcome anglaise! I've only been here a while myself, but everyone is lovely. I am in awe of how hard you must have worked to get to the stage you are at in such a short time!

Anglaise1 · 03/12/2014 18:07

mitch agree that your PT is being cautious but don't overdo it. I know that it seems to be the recommendation not to run too often to avoid injury (3 or 4 sessions a week seems to be the favourite, unless you are a top athlete!). I'm an addict too and find it impossible to take a rest when my club coach tells me to Sad
Hi actongirl I think I just have a very low resting heart rate, and sadly I haven't improved my time at all since joining the club and training seriously Shock but we have a lot of fun training and that is the main thing. I don't think all the trail racing I did in the summer helped my speed on road racing but I did get a lot of podiums as there aren't many female endurance trail runners here...not sure if it is the same in the UK?
Suzanne I'm with you, I prefer running in the colder weather too.

Suzannewithaplan · 03/12/2014 18:12

Actiongirl, no, as soon as I start to run I don't feel the cold.

I'd previously been doing most of my running on the treadmill at the gym and get over heated very quickly so it's a pleasure to feel a bit cold when running.

Today I was slightly perturbed by creepy behavior of men on bicycles along the routeAngry
perverts in the pool were one of the issues that put me off swimming Angry
also a large dog jumped up at me, not that I'm especially scared of dogs but, well it's not the first time it happened and I think it's a bit muchConfused

actiongirl1978 · 03/12/2014 18:21

Oh that's awful, never come across a Pervy man in any sport, will be on my guard!

Anglaise, I have only done one race despite running for over two years and I am not in a club. The thing I like most about running is that I can do it on my own. My most pleasurable moments are when I am doing a long run, listening to music and looking at the view in the lovely part of Hampshire I live in.

Suzanne I used to live and run in Dublin and my runs were always in the early morning, I can do drizzle or even driving rain which is lucky as it usually pissed it down on my runs and I run my best times in the rain, but wind and biting cold I don't like, simply because I feel like I have to work twice as hard for the same result Grin

Suzannewithaplan · 03/12/2014 18:27

with cycling it's more aggressive men, shouting loudly out of cars as they go by in (I presume) an attempt to knock me off
Couple of weeks ago I cycled past a man who said 'I hope you get run over by a lorry'
in the pool it's the man swimming right behind you under the water with goggles and just generally being STARED at in the pool and the gym.

I'll be packing a handgun soon
(joke!!)
