4.8 from Thursday night and 3.1 from parkrun today.

715.9

ThursdayLast · 22/11/2014 13:20

Checking in with my parkrun makes it 719.

I need to run up the hill quicker. Any advice?
My splits were 7.15; 7.36 then 9.55! So you can see how my uphill is letting me down!

zombiesheep · 22/11/2014 13:38

My first half marathon is tomorrow! Any hints and tips? I am so so so so nervous, a bit shakey and panicky but a little excited too!

Mitchy1nge · 22/11/2014 13:47

excited for you zombie! is it the one in Norwich? (am unable to imagine a world beyond East Anglia Grin)

lounge around, eat well, drink plenty, congratulate yourself on all the training miles you've logged and please let us know how it went!

zombiesheep · 22/11/2014 13:54

It is Mitchy! I'm so scared that I won't finish it. The most I've ran is 9 miles!
Thank you! At work today but it's an easy day and then tonight I'm gonna carb up and chill out :o

Mitchy1nge · 22/11/2014 13:57

will be just down the A140 from you sending you amazing running vibes all morning

90% of running is psychological (and the rest is in your head, as they say) you can do it! (wish I was, instead of nasty muddy one in Thetford Forest next weekend, am a convert to road running)

emummy · 22/11/2014 13:58

Good luck zombiesheep, I'm sure you will be fine. Hope you enjoy the day.
ThursdayLast, I think the only solution is more hills! Running a hilly route regularly or picking one hill to do hill repeats. Also I think squats and lunges are helpful to strengthen those glutes!

ThursdayLast · 22/11/2014 14:13

Thanks emummy - all my routes are hilly so I think I've been taking my ability to run up them for granted. I'm going to have to DO something about it.

Good luck zombie! I'm no expert but resting up and eating right today is what I would do. Enjoy it!

feetheart · 22/11/2014 15:10

Good luck Zombie. 9 miles is fine, that was as far as I trained for GNR last year and I was fine.
The crowd and the atmosphere and sheer bloody-mindedness will get you beyond 9 on the day and when you have got that far it's only just over a parkrun to the finish :o
Good trick is to count UP as far as 3 miles then count DOWN as you can do it on your fingers. You can then pass every mile marker with your hands in the air yelling the number of miles you have left even if those around you think you are a bit bonkers :)

EdithDickie · 22/11/2014 15:21

Good luck zombie!

3.33 miles for me this afternoon.

cinnamongreyhound · 22/11/2014 16:05

My tips tips would be arrive in plenty of time, take a banana to eat about an hour before you start, leave your last wee until as close to the start as you dare and I take jelly babies rather than gels and let one dissolve in my cheek from 6miles, every couple. Don't drink too much at water stations and try to stay positive, you can do it zombiesheep!

It's never muddy in Thetford forest Mitchy1inge!!! We have the sandiest soil you can possibly imagine and it almost never gets water logged :)

Parkrun in 29:50 for me to add 725.43 with EdithDickies too.

this, I think, is a bit of the festive forest course from my foggy recce last week and in places very wet and muddy - that is definitely bits of Thetford Forest around the edges

is quite possible I followed arrows for an earlier event though, think there was some 50k thing a week or two earlier

Mitchy1nge · 22/11/2014 16:21

I doubt that is the course though

had loads of gates to go through and fields full of weird looking livestock (spotted sheep)

HalleLouja · 22/11/2014 17:19

Feet I have signed up for Fred Hughes. Just thought I'd say. Grin

zombiesheep · 22/11/2014 19:13

Thanks for the nice messages everyone! I've eaten so many carbs today I think I've gained about 2 stone haha. I will eat my usual breakfast of oatibix and milk then I will take 2 bananas although I will probably only eat one :o

Haven't even thought of gels or jelly babies.. Will just water at the water stations suffice? Maybe I should take a lucozade or something.

It's meant to rain as well, shall I just wear a t shirt? I get hot quickly. Oh god so many questions :o I need to keep calm!

cinnamongreyhound · 22/11/2014 20:32

If you usually don't eat anything when you run then race day is not the time to start zombiesheep! Every time I've worm more than a single short sleeved top for a race I've regretted it! Better something you can tie around your waist of anything.

OP posts:
feetheart · 22/11/2014 21:00

T-shirt if you usually get hot. Just wear a very fetching black plastic bag over it until just before the start to stop you getting cold when hanging around.

And...breath. And...ENJOY IT :)
The nerves will stop as soon as the race starts.

BlueChampagne · 22/11/2014 23:24

Go Zombio go!

Mitchy from horsey events I've done at Thetford, that's great coverage!

Mitchy1nge · 23/11/2014 10:13

thinking of zombie in this rain! (assume is raining next door in Norfolk)

was thinking of an hour gentle run today but is a too watery everywhere

EdithDickie · 23/11/2014 10:14

Good luck zombie! Hope that the rain sods off very quickly.

cinnamongreyhound · 23/11/2014 10:29

Think it's going to rain all day but you'll be warm enough and enjoy anyway Zombiesheep!!

Very wet run for me and my doggies! Canicross club cancelled the run due to rain so we went anyway with another doggy friend who planned to go. Little doggy was hilarious rubbing herself all over the carpet to dry off when we got home!!!

I don't know the route at all Mitchy1inge, it's about 10miles from me but I don't usually drive that far to go for a run so it'll all be new which is nice. The lady I will put you in touch with us also planning and entirely off road half in Thetford forest next October :)

729.43

that sounds really good cinnamon, assuming I survive this one I think I might stick with this distance for the rest of my life

although have been asked, secretly, to accompany someone on day 3 or 4 of the quad marathon here which looks great, mix of road and trail, and local

another friend recently did the Athens marathon without running more than 8 miles in training, she struggled a bit but completed it in under 5 hours and that's a gruelling course by all accounts

(why can't I put the thought of a marathon out of my head!)

TheBigBumTheory · 23/11/2014 11:56

Hope zombie doing well. I agree not to wear too much.

I did a fast 3.1 miles today, and am planning a longer one tomorrow night with the club.

2 weeks until my 10k race Shock

cinnamongreyhound · 23/11/2014 12:12

I almost did that this year Mitchy1inge but just the 6 miles but would have lost too much money taking the Thursday and Friday off and would have needed Dh to be off too so decided against it. It's not too expensive to enter all 4 days though for the shorter distances.

OP posts:
Mitchy1nge · 23/11/2014 12:29

that would be a great option, if it hasn't sold out nearer the time - should have a good idea by then? is over 30 weeks, long run is a very comfortable 10 so have aaaaaaaaages to extend it bit by bit, stealthily, without my calf noticing what I'm up to?
