MarathonMummy1 which joints are giving you gyp? ( I hope it's not all of them!)

Zombie I'd have thought a half marathon would be ok if 9 miles is comfortable (?)
BUT I know nothing about training for such events so disregard that if it conflicts with advice from those in the know Wink

I'm Shock that no earphones are allowed, is that common

Mitchy1nge · 19/11/2014 17:50

Zombi is pretty normal nowadays for road races to threaten disqualification if people are seen using earphones

9 miles is a big chunk of the distance, lots of plans only take you up to 10 (have a half in two weeks and haven't run much over 10 in training, neither has my friend and it is her first one) it might be best to not run much this week and not at all after Thursday or Friday, good luck!

Mitchy1nge · 19/11/2014 17:53

Envy of people who can run with headphones, I would love to do this but it makes me feel panicky

it must really help the time pass on long runs

Suzannewithaplan · 19/11/2014 18:06

I think I could just about manage an outdoor run without in ear entertainment, but I'd find the treadmill very hard going, I look forward to listening to my favourite podcasts just as much as I do the run, it's an integral part of the experience for me.

Can you say why it makes you feel panicky Mitchy?

Mitchy1nge · 19/11/2014 18:15

it's probably the idea that I've reduced my awareness of my surroundings, Stuff might happen in the environment around me without me noticing even if I turned the volume low? I rarely run on a road alone so it's not just my fear of traffic

I know it sounds a bit zen but I do like the sound of my own footfall and breathing, the rhythm of that

just would be nice to enjoy music too,

ThursdayLast · 19/11/2014 18:36

Well dontcha just hate when you didn't realise you paused Runkeeper for 2 fricking miles??!
I did approx 6 in the end, so I make that 620.5

Suzannewithaplan · 19/11/2014 18:36

I see what you mean, in the gym I wear earphones with foam in ear bits jammed right in to cut out all other noise, outdoors I wear the other style where the earpiece is solid and sits more loosely in the ear.
If I feel more of a need to hear my surroundings I'll turn them down and maybe just have one ear in.

I never wear them cycling because I wouldn't feel safe

ThursdayLast · 19/11/2014 18:38

I love running with headphones. I listen to a lot of podcasts rather than music though. I'm not sure if that's whats differnt, but I don't find it dulls my sense of surrounding at all actually. Maybe I'm just lucky. I'm certainly in the hedge usually before the car knows there's a runner on the road Smile

EdithDickie · 19/11/2014 19:31

I feel like you Mitchy, I like to hear my breathing etc. Also, if I have music I find I try to run to the beat of it which is just really off putting!

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 19/11/2014 19:55

Hey dudes.

I have 3.1 miles to add to the total so I make that 623.6. I am experiencing some pain in my right leg which is frustrating. I also seem to only be managing to get out to run approx twice a week at the moment which is also frustrating. Why does life always get in the way?

MirandaWest · 19/11/2014 21:13

My bf and I went out and did 5k so a other 3.1 miles.

I like running with music and faster tunes seem to help me go faster :)

Total of 626.7

MirandaWest · 19/11/2014 21:14

Still in shorts and short sleeved t shirt although I have an underneath vest thing. Plus gloves for bout the first km Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 19/11/2014 21:22

Mine is on the smallest setting now ThursdayLast so should be ok for a while :)

Hi MarathonMummy1, I didn't start running until ds2 was 16months so no advice I'm afraid!

I can put you I touch with a couple of rl people Mitchy1inge.

Very common Suzannewithaplan, especially with road races. I started running without them in preparation for my first hm. Before then I always ran with just one so I could hear everything around too.

Did 4.5 miles tonight on doggy run 631.2

originalpiratematerial · 19/11/2014 22:29

3 miles from me this morning. Doing the 4 mins running, 1 min walking thing now. Really lovely morning for a run!

originalpiratematerial · 19/11/2014 22:30

So that's 634.2.

LaughingM · 19/11/2014 22:37

Fck and bgger, I've just run 10k Shock Shock Shock!! The furthest I've done before tonight is 6.5... So I set out on that route this evening, got to 5k reasonably happily but was faced with an uphill last kilometre so then decided to take a different route towards the supermarket instead of home. Then after 6km I felt good, so kept going, then after 7 I felt good, so kept going, then I thought 8 is practically 10 and so I did it! I am pretty stunned and may have shed a little tear when mapmyrun flashed up 10k.

So, wise runners, do you think I've overdone it a bit pushing my body much further than I have ever done before? I've stretched well and and my muscles feel ok, if tired, at the moment... Fingers crossed I won't regret this in the morning!

Zombie best of luck with your half, I'm sure you can do it with a dose of determination. You could always take a few short walking breaks if you're concerned on the day though?

Marathonmummy no advice but huge admiration!

Well done to everyone else running over the last few days and wishing aching limbs and injured parts well!

EdithDickie · 19/11/2014 22:53

Congratulations Laughing! That's brilliant, well done!

If you were feeling good throughout and have stretched well etc then you should hopefully be okay, probably a bit tired tomorrow but the "holy moly I am AWESOME" feeling will make up for that Grin

Suzannewithaplan · 19/11/2014 23:10

Nice one laughing:o

I am far from wise on the running front but I'd say see how you feel tomorrow.
If you feel a bit too wiped out for too long maybe you pushed a little too hard but chances are you'll be fine and just need a bit of rest for your body to repair and do all the behind the scenes stuff that happens when we make improvements in fitness and endurance

zombiesheep · 20/11/2014 08:16

Thanks everyone, yeah the earphones are not allowed because it decreases our awareness of the surroundings so they just decided to ban them :( fair enough but I like wearing them! :o

Seems I have pulled yet another muscle in my groin from running club. Everything is telling me not to run this half marathon but there is no way I am giving up!

zombiesheep · 20/11/2014 08:16

Probably more a tendon than muscle

cinnamongreyhound · 20/11/2014 08:29

Well done LaughingM, I wouldn't say you pushed yourself too far at all. When I trained for a hm I was increasing distance by 2 miles alternate weeks and 6.5k is over 4 miles, 10k is just over 6 so I think you'll be fine :)

shall I pm you my email address cinnamon? would appreciate the contact with those who know these things!

ScienceRocks · 20/11/2014 10:05

Did three miles this morning. A new route, which I really enjoyed but clearly has a lot of dogs living along it as my dog kept on stopping to have a sniff. So not my fastest run but it was cold and sunny and lovely.

Can't see on my phone but whoever ran 10k unexpectedly, well done!

New total is 637.2

ScienceRocks · 20/11/2014 10:06

I run with headphones by the way. Listened to Mary Berry's Desert Island Discs this morning! I don't like hearing my gasping and stumbling breathing and footsteps.

ScienceRocks · 20/11/2014 10:07

Sorry, new total is 643.4 with laughing's 10k.
