Hi all, I hope you're enjoying your weekend runs Smile.

I just did W6R3 (so 25 minutes of running with no breaks), I actually found it easier than the recent 20 minutes of running, so I must be making some progress. I felt like I could keep going, so fingers crossed for the next run.

Nightfall1983 · 31/08/2014 19:56

So yesterday I did my first solo run (W3R3), I found it very hard and missed having DH to chat to but I made it.

However my foot began to hurt through the day yesterday and by this morning had developed a distinct lump/swelling on the instep - where the arch meets the heel. It hurts a lot when I walk so I'm not looking good for tomorrow's run :( am quite worried that it'll take time to heal - what have I done?!

maffive · 01/09/2014 08:59

Hi Wasting, I found the first 2 intervals of week 5 ok. I listen to Chubby Jones' podcasts, and she makes a comment about how after the first 5 minutes you get into your stride, it becomes easier to carry on, and that really resonated with me. I found the 20 min run ok until the last couple of minutes and then every second seemed to drag and I really had to force myself to finish.

I decided to repeat w5r3 this week as I'm only managing to get out for 2 runs and didn't feel ready for the next level, so I've dropped a bit behind you now.

maffive · 01/09/2014 09:17

A funny (and slightly terrifying) thing happened this morning on my run. I was about 13 mins into w5r3 when I got attacked by a magpie!

This is something that happens in Oz during the nesting season. The males get really territorial, and if they think their nest is threatened they swoop down at you!

I was well in the zone, iPod on, and so was only vaguely aware of something flapping around me the first few times and didn't take much notice. Then I looked up and saw talons coming towards me Shock.

I sprinted out of the park, squealing, arms flailing above my head, magpie swooping down at me the whole time. As if I don't feel ridiculous enough when I'm out running anyway Grin.

I was completely wrecked, and ended up stopping about a minute before the end of the run which was annoying.

Apparently they can remember you and will deliberately go for you again, so I'll have to avoid that route for the next couple of months. Might be safer to get gym membership and use a treadmill!

DottyDot · 01/09/2014 10:40

Blimey - running's hard enough without magpies..! Grin.

I've gone off the rails a bit with my eating (too much chocolate) and drinking (too much wine) and have skipped a couple of runs Sad. So I really need to get back in the zone...

Went to the gym yesterday though but had to stop after 18 minutes as my left knee gave out and was very painful. Am hoping it's a blip and I'll be back tomorrow for another go. Just need to get back in the rhythm of running every othe day and eating sensibly.... Aaarrgghh...!

stilllearnin · 01/09/2014 11:00

Remember the great Aldi rush of August 2014? Well, I just christened the running leggings I bought! Grin that's how long it's been and boy did I feel it. Ran for 27 mins before I hit a steep hill and had to admit defeat. But it's September and I'm back on it so I'm pretty happy. Join us on the eating betterers thread dotty. They're a good bunch!

And I once had a sheep stare hard at me but an attacking magpie- that would freak me out big time!

CruCru · 01/09/2014 12:19

W8R1 done! My goodness - dive bombing magpies sound freaky.

ScienceRocks · 01/09/2014 13:08

Stillearning, I admire your dedication to eating better and doing exercise. I am hoping that exercising will cancel out the food and wine I like so much.

Scary magpie story. I am really not keen on birds, that would have freaked me out!

Belgianchox · 01/09/2014 13:20

Hi, can I please join you all? I started running last month and am running 4-5km each time, sometimes with my son, sometimes alone. I already feel so much better for it, but could use the extra motivation that committing to a thread here would offer Grin.

CruCru · 01/09/2014 19:01

Welcome Belgianchox!

Hi all

I have (possibly) found the solution to the running jacket problem. The men's ones come up in XXL so I have ordered the white one and will see how that fits. I'll send back the one I have tomorrow.

DottyDot · 01/09/2014 20:50

Cru I always buy the biggest men's size fleecy tops from decathlon - much easier fit and perfect for lounging around and keeping warm! Men's coats also marvellous!

CruCru · 01/09/2014 20:55

Sounds good Dotty. I don't know why I didn't think of it before.

Ladyflip · 01/09/2014 20:59

I finished in July, went on holiday and haven't had the motivation for the rest of August.

But it's September now, so I'm back on it tomorrow! Early start, and all that. Got to find the trainers, the iPod, the cuff, you name it, it's all in the house somewhere but who knows where.

I know I won't manage the full 30, but what would be a reasonable time to aim for?

I have a big birthday in (oh shit) two months and I want to look fab by then.

ChameleonCircuit · 02/09/2014 07:39

Ladyflip - I'd just start and see how long you can go for....then if it's only 10 minutes or so, walk for three minutes then try again. Or just skip back to week 5/6 and see what happens. Good luck!

DottyDot · 02/09/2014 08:38

Well am Sad at the moment - my left knee is still very painful so I think I need to rest it but today's a gym day and I really need to keep going to try to keep in some sort of pattern.

Not sure if cycling/rowing machines will be much better for it but if anyone knows what else I can do with a dodgy knee, let me know! I thought I'd try a good fast walk at the very least - try to walk for 30 mins and see how far I get.

CruCru · 02/09/2014 09:27

Dotty - if your knee is bad then just rest it. You can get back into a pattern later. It isn't worth injuring yourself.

addictedtosugar · 02/09/2014 12:42

Is there a pool at the gym, Dotty?
I'd do something none weight bareing if your knee is sore.
I agree with CruCru, rest is best.

DottyDot · 02/09/2014 15:19

No pool but I could go swimming somewhere else for a bit - good idea. It's difficult at the moment just getting from standing up to sitting down!

Will go to the gym tonight though and do a fast walk just to see how it goes...

enormouse · 02/09/2014 16:26

Smile just done W4R1. It should have been the last one of week 3 but Dp (who's doing it with me) deleted podcast 3 to put on 4.

I couldn't be bothered to load week 3 back on as both DSes were miraculously napping at the same time. So I went ahead and did it and I managed to do the longer runs. Am ridiculously proud of myself and Dp is no longer one run ahead of me Grin

ScienceRocks · 02/09/2014 16:50

Well done enormouse! Dotty, swimming sounds best for that knee.

I did my first run of week 2 today. It was definitely harder but I have put some music with the approximate bpm I run at on the iPod to play in between Laura's ministrations, which keeps me going. The dog is getting quite used to running and walking alongside me and the DDs managed to play nicely at the playground in the park as I ran round the track three times.

I have been running in the evening when DH gets home (as the DDs are quite young) but I was very aware of it getting dark the last time I did it, so I am quite pleased school is starting and I can do it after the morning school run.

CruCru · 02/09/2014 16:52

Well done enormouse and ScienceRocks!

LaughingM · 02/09/2014 17:54

Well done all you runners! Haven't been on for a while so just had a long catch up with where everyone is at - it seems like you're all whizzing through!

Sorry to hear about your knee Dotty, hope it mends swiftly.

I'm off for my first run tonight after 3 weeks and I am terrified!! I've been on holiday (lots of European cities so much walking but not easy to organise running) and then came back and was laid up with a chest/ear infection for a few days. I'm still coughing and spluttering a bit but I think I want to give running a try tonight now I'm back at work to get back into the routine! Before I went away I was at w7r3, but I think I'm going to go right back to w5r1… I think I'd rather backtrack to something I feel confident I can do then hopefully start making progress back through the programme. I might set myself the target to finish and do a parkrun on the first weekend of October...

ScienceRocks · 02/09/2014 18:10

Oh no, here comes the hip pain Sad

FiveGoMadInDorset · 02/09/2014 19:21

Catching up with the thread, welcome all new ones and enjoy the running.

Dotty - ouch for the knee swimming or rest is best I think, have you taken nurofen, if it continues may be worth seeing someone.

Science - sorry to hear you are in pain as well. My dog enjoys coming out but luckily he doesn't need a lead.

Cru - good luck with the running jacket!

Laughing at the dive bombing magpies although it must be scary.

Finished week 3 today (although well done Enormouse for overtaking me) I did it on the treadmill at the gym and found it OK, ran at around 7kph hich feels like the pace I am doing outside but as there were know hills and no muddy puddles felt better. My knees hurt below, DH reckons it is the cartilage, I am going to take things slowly try and do the runs but stop when it gets too bad and walk.
