That sounds awful Spidey. You can't run like that, would make you worse.
Stillearnin, thank you - I've finished week 9 a few weeks ago and I think lacking that structure. I use a 10k app sometimes but I find that easier to do at the weekend, at work full time and small dcs so weeknights are tiring all round. Also in the dark I have more limited routes, to stay near well-lit areas.
Will see if dh amenable to me going before their bedtime tonight, might make a difference Smile Once the clocks go back it will be dark all the time here practically!

Iggi999 · 22/10/2014 16:02

... Not meaning that people who don't work ft or have small dcs don't get tired, of course!

MySpideySenseTickles · 22/10/2014 19:26

Ack, I can't walk much without coughing, a run would probably finish me off!
I shall continue to catch up on my housework (it's about time I did some!) while occasionally gazing wistfully towards my trainers, they're waiting by the front door and my running clothes are folded on top of the dresser ready for the minute I can breathe deeply again!

addictedtosugar · 22/10/2014 19:59

Iggi thats what I've just done. Tea and homework with the kids, then out for a run. It was dusk as I set off, but my eyes adjusted to the lowering light, so it was only really dark after the cyclist with the super bright light had gone the other way.
Then I sent DH to the gym, tucked the kids into bed, had a shower and am now on MN eating icecream

Spidey take it easy. I had nearly a month off with a perma-cold/cough. Building back up now, but my first "run" after was more walking!

ScienceRocks · 23/10/2014 19:04

So, I'm feeling better but am not quite right yet. Am I crazy to be thinking of doing a park run on Saturday? The only reason I'm contemplating it is because it is very close to my parents where I will be staying (walking distance, in fact) and I won't know anyone there so can't be embarrassed if it all goes wrong.

Am I ready? I've finished week 8 of couch to 5k but my longest run has only been 4k (though with the walking, I have done 5k in 38 minutes). Views appreciated!

addictedtosugar · 23/10/2014 19:50

Its quite a long time til Sat, so maybe not. Guess it depends how much you do tomorrow.
How long have you been recuperating for? Its taken me 3 runs to get back to being able to run for 30 mins, without needing to stop for a walk. I was off for a month.

5km in under 40 mins isn't to be sniffed at. That won't be a problem.

stilllearnin · 25/10/2014 09:41

Hi Science - what did you decide about park run today? I would be more tempted to do it away from home too!

We have a treadmill! dd has just done w1r1. She's pretty fit but as we all know its hard to stop and start. Anyway she did it and so she's on her way. It takes up tonnes of room and I really don't like treadmills so I wont be using except perhaps a cheeky lunch break run!

crappyday · 25/10/2014 09:49

I tried todo w2r3 today, except my app wouldn't work which was annoying. So I walked 5 mins, and then alternated running & walking for 2 minutes each. I can't remember what it's supposed to be!
I'm re-downloading the app to see if it works.
It did seem much easier today, helped by going downhill.

ScienceRocks · 25/10/2014 17:11

I did, stilleanrin! Just under 35minutes, which I'm really pleased about, as i am for running it all and not being last!

addictedtosugar · 25/10/2014 17:51

Thats fab Science well done.

Iggi999 · 25/10/2014 18:42

That's a great achievement!
I'm finding it really hard to motivate myself to go out in the dark.
After tomorrow it will be even worse Sad

LaughingM · 25/10/2014 19:36

Well done Science! I haven't managed to get myself to parkrun yet and I finished the programme weeks ago!

Yes, the darkness is not encouraging me either Iggi. I think I need to scope out a few other safe night time routes (all my day runs are at least partially through woods/parks) as doing the same one twice a week until the spring is going to be seriously dull!

stilllearnin · 25/10/2014 21:00

Science- fantastic! Well done! Should we help each other set some new goals, given the struggle from here til xmas? i want to run twice a week and on one of those i want to build up to 10k. I also want to get a sit up routine back on track 3 times a week Smile

ScienceRocks · 26/10/2014 09:33

Sounds good, stilllearnin. I'd like to do two 5k runs plus some jillian each week. Not sure I'm interested in increasing my distance, because of the time involved, but I'd like to get quicker.

I hate running in the dark as well. It's very urban/suburban where I live but there are streets with no lights on and pockets where it is very dark indeed. The treadmill is good for days when I can't get out.

Redcliff · 26/10/2014 17:51

Spidey - sorry you haven't been well. Must be very frustrating for you.

I am so with you about running in this falling light. I went out at 4.30 and decided to try a different route alongside a busy road . Not doing that again - I didn't realise how hilly it was and had to stop to catch my breath at one point. I will have to try and get out during the day a bit more .

Redcliff · 26/10/2014 17:54

Addicted - when you say you run after tea do you mean soon after you have had tea? I am never sure how long I should wait after eating before going out.

addictedtosugar · 26/10/2014 18:12

Tend to eat at 5, finish at 5.30, and go running at 7.
I have run 45 mins after eating, and it was OK, but think I'd prefer an hour.

Can't beleive its pitch black already. I'm sooo glad I stuffed the lamb and potatoes in the oven, and went out at 4, leaving DH with yorkshire and veg instructions. That worked OK.

Iggi999 · 26/10/2014 19:14

I went out tonight but only ran for 20 mins - it was only half five but dark, wet and brewing up a storm! I'll have to persevere though as it's only at weekends that I've the chance of running in daylight at all - it's dark when I leave for work and dark when I return. Bugger!

stilllearnin · 26/10/2014 22:23

I'm visiting Cumbria Smile hoping to get out tomorrow but a bit worried about getting lost! That'll be one of my runs this week Smile

stilllearnin · 26/10/2014 22:25

Oh science, have you tried the speed podcast for getting faster? I do this and then have to get up a hill to get home. Each time I've been trying to run a bit further up the hill before I start walk

ScienceRocks · 26/10/2014 22:29

I'll look that up stilllearnin, thank you for the recommendation!

stilllearnin · 27/10/2014 11:43

I've been out today but visiting my mum so not sure of my route. I did 4.5k in 30 mins so not my best but not bad while I'm still recovering!

MySpideySenseTickles · 27/10/2014 20:04

Been to the dr today for other things and she's given me the go ahead to start running again, if the coughing gets bad I'm to slow down but all good.
It's forecast dry tomorrow and ds is out with sil's all day tomorrow.
I desperately need a run too.

stilllearnin · 28/10/2014 09:54

Spidey good news. You can take it easy and still get back on track- its all about getting back into the habit of getting your trainers back on and getting out thereSmile

addictedtosugar · 28/10/2014 10:34

Enjoy, Spidey. As Stillearning says, take it easy, don't expect to be able to do what you could when you stopped, and be proud of yourself for getting those trainers back on.
Any run is better than no run, and its taken me 3-4 runs to get back to being able to run for the same time (even tho I'm currently much slower than when I went off ill)
