Thought I would start a new thread for us to continue our chat Smile

Starlight, I think it took me to week 7, where the walking stopped to actually get into it.
I needed the short bursts to build up my fitness, but actually stop start stop start is knackering. I'm useless for the fiorst 5 -6 mins, and then it starts getting better, so actually running for 20 mins is easier for me than 5 min, wlak 5 mins walk etc.

I used to HATE running. But a year on, and I'm still here. Not doing the marathon distances some are, but sticking at 5-8km in 35-60 mins. My clothes have gone from beeing "uhoh, I'm going to have to buy a bigger size" to "Uhoh, I need the smaller wardrobe" - tho they are slightly too tight atm, but getting close.

I also upped my eating for the fist few weeks, then it dropped to a piece of fruit after a run, and now its usually water, sometimes fruit.

If is something you dread all day, is it possible to run first thing, get it out of the way, and enjoy the rest of the day?

Or is there someone in real life to run with?

Good luck!

WastingMyYoungYears · 18/08/2014 12:33

Edwinia, I hope you're having a better day today, and manage to get out for a run Smile.

All the rest of you crazy Marathon people Grin, you're making my ParkRun goal look inadequate! Well done Smile.

WastingMyYoungYears · 18/08/2014 12:34

addicted, that's interesting about stopping / starting. I think I find it hard too (mentally and physically), and I wondered if it might just be easier to ruuuuuuun.

DuchessFanny · 18/08/2014 12:37

I also find that interesting addicted
I'm about to go into week 7 and think I might actually find this better than stopping .. Just worried whether my legs can handle it ! ( my breathing settles after 5 minutes, but after 15 minutes my legs are like weights ! )

StarlightMcKenzie · 18/08/2014 12:59

Thanks so much addicted. You have given me some hope. I like the overall feeling of being a bit fitter. I feel so much better for it.

But the actual exercise itself is really horrible and I prefer to run in the dark so I don't have to also deal with the mortification of people seeing me, so it is usually late in the evenings. That seems to be the time when I feel most 'alive' and have most energy anyway. Mornings I'm lucky to get dressed.

Perhaps I need to just get used to it. I find it boring as well as miserable but I think it might be that I haven't found the right thing to occupy my mind when I'm doing it. At the moment it is pretty much 'Oh, god, I'm only 1/2/3/4 minutes into this' or before the last run 'Why don't I just stop now, I've done most of it?' kind of thing. My dh says that when he runs it is like meditation and his mind can go blank. I think I am a long way off that. But perhaps I need to actively try and develop different more positive thought patterns until it becomes a habbit!?

StarlightMcKenzie · 18/08/2014 13:00

And you might have a point about the stop-start thing. I'm generally prefer to just get on with things.

addictedtosugar · 18/08/2014 13:48

I was very self conscious to start with - wobbly bits, beetroot face, and sounding like a steam train. My heart sunk when I had to go past the teanage hangout (the choice is the underpass or cross the duel carrageway), but I've never had a comment from them.

The comments I have had have ALL been positive - either that looks like hard work from walkers desperate to do what I'm doing, or other runners who know what its like to start at the beginning givign me smiles or thumbs up.

YOU might know you've only done 2km, and some of it was walking, but they don't know that your not running the last few m of a marathon, or walking to cool down after a marathon. They are just in awe you can pull on some trainers and run any distance!

The stop start can be difficult, but if you really are starting from the couch, it needs working though to get to the fitness levels required to do the 20+ mins of running.

Do you listen to anything when you run? Most people seem to have music, but there is someone who listened to comedy podcasts, iirc. Audio books may be an alternative?

Dutchess My legs can keep going, but my lungs give up (which is suprising, because lung function tests at work show I have above average lung capacity). I sometimes run with a mate from work whose legs give out but breathing is fine. He is most miffed after crossing the roundabout (which involves stopping usually, so my breathing recovers) that i can put on a burst of speed for the last 100m up hill to work - his legs don't recover as fast, but he can usually keep going longer than me.

StarlightMcKenzie · 18/08/2014 13:54

I listen to Laura and the music on there (NHS). It's okay the first time through each week.

StarlightMcKenzie · 18/08/2014 13:57

I've got my second w1 run tonight and I feel a bit better for having spoken to some of you.

Don't want to run negativity through your thread, but at the moment, I'm just not really 'getting it', so I suppose trying to get motivation/inspiration.

If this fails I might just have to down a few vodkas and see if someone will let me into a nightclub somewhere...

EdwiniasRevenge · 18/08/2014 14:31

Still struggling today wasting.

I can get out today but my motivation is zero and I don't feel like running.

I know if I try to do W4R2 I will fail and that will depress me.

I might go out on my old 5km route later and do some of my old lamp post intervals. There's no pass or fail involved in that.

CruCru · 18/08/2014 15:10

Dude - there is no pass or fail. You are doing great work just pulling your trainers on and running any distance. Most people can't even run to the end of the street.

W6R2 done! I covered 4.15 km according to Map my Run (but that includes the warm up, cool down and a bit of walking back to my front door).

CruCru · 18/08/2014 15:10

I'm very impressed with all this marathon chat.

ImATotJeSuisUneTot · 18/08/2014 16:38

Can I join please? Im quite a fit person, but not a runner at all.

I did Wk1R1 today, and found it far easier than I expected. Ive signed up for a 5k in November, so really need to stick with this! Grin

spookyskeleton · 18/08/2014 16:50

Imatot as long as you do it 3 times a week, you should easily manage 5k in November Smile Love your name - it has always been my secret fave kids tv series and wish it was still on Grin

lovelidl the half marathon is end of Feb so 6 months to get to the distance and am hoping it will keep me motivated over Christmas.

starlight I didn't mean to be so dismissive in my last post but I honestly think that if you spend all day dreading going and not enjoying it whilst you are there, it is not worth it, life is too short. Tbh, for about the first 12 weeks of running, I didn't enjoy the actual running part but I couldn't wait to go running and really looked forward to going and loved the buzz I got at the end which made me keep going day after day. After 12 weeks, something suddenly clicked and I actually enjoy the running aswell now. There will be an exercise out there for you, you just need to find it.

ImATotJeSuisUneTot · 18/08/2014 16:58

Thanks Spooky MN-ers always comment that its a real earworm. Im really due a change but nothing is leaping out at me. Grin

Im planning on still doing spin classes on alternate days to running, will that work out do you all think?

ChameleonCircuit · 18/08/2014 18:16

Starlight - I'm due to do W7R2 on Wednesday, and it's only in the last couple of weeks that I've started to enjoy the actual running. What I've enjoyed right from the start is the improvement in my fitness levels. Gasping when you've climbed the stairs is no fun.

StarlightMcKenzie · 18/08/2014 18:27

Thank you. Yes. That is what I remember from last time. Only on week 3 and I was more up for chasing my kids round the garden and helping people with their buggies upstairs etc. That was Fab.

I don't think there is an exercise out there for me. I'm about to turn 40 and must have tried them all by now. I have never experience a post-excercise 'high' and time spent doing it feels like time robbed from my life.

I think I am trying to do this couch to 5k because it is the least 'robbing'. I read somewhere that statistically by running you increase your lifespan by the amount of time you have run. If you then add getting to and from your place of exercise, - well you're in the negative.......

WastingMyYoungYears · 18/08/2014 19:09

Starlight, definitely try it until halfway through - it sounds like you were enjoying some aspects of it before Smile.

I wouldn't say I love running at the moment. I like that I'm doing something to help me to lose weight and to get fit. I like that I already feel a bit fitter. I like that I get to buy techy running gear, and I like leaving DH to put DS to bed Grin. I don't love running yet though, although I can see glimpses of it when I'm running and I feel okay.

WastingMyYoungYears · 18/08/2014 21:20

Did you go running Edwinia? I second what someone else said earlier, it's not about passing / failing, it's just about having a bash. And having a few days off if you need them is fine too. Brew for you.

EdwiniasRevenge · 18/08/2014 21:38

No.

My marathon running neighbour invited me out but I'd just eaten tea.

another stressful day here. I intend to get up relatively early tomorrow and get it done.

ChameleonCircuit · 18/08/2014 21:39

Remember....however slowly you run, you're still moving faster than those people sitting on the couch.

StarlightMcKenzie · 18/08/2014 21:47

Yep. Off in a minute for week1 run2. Run 2 always hardest from memory as no novelty coz you did it already once and no 'finale' meaning you've completed.

Had just one large glass of wine this time so hopefully will get me through it. Felt great yesterday and some of today, so need to try to hang onto the fact that it is just 20mins and though I'll come back cross I can shower and bed.

Igggi · 18/08/2014 22:55

Chameleon I'm going to save your comment!

StarlightMcKenzie · 18/08/2014 23:36

Ach, done it. Didn't think a I was gonna make it but somehow did anyway. I distracted myself in the 90secs walking by catching up on Facebook which kept my mind from being negative and thinking to much about the next run.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 19/08/2014 07:43

Well done Starlight was that W1R1?
