Morning! Welcome lost, hope you carry on enjoying running. Time away from the children is a perfectly good reason - probably most of us enjoy that part of it! Not sure about the rib pain, perhaps someone else will have an idea.

I had a great day at RunBalmoral yesterday. The weather cleared up beautifully so we were running in sunshine. Dd2 enjoyed her race, not sure she has a competitive spirit though - she made a new friend to run with and they stopped for a chat half way round! My race went well got a pb! 30:16 for 5k, Previous best was exactly 2mins faster so well pleased. Now got 3 weeks before before the Baker Hughes 10k in Aberdeen, back to training tomorrow!

zombiesheep · 27/04/2014 08:41

Hey everyone,

So if my 9+ mins a mile is quite good then I surely can't be doing it right because I am not good at running! But my nike+ app tells me! so I reckon that's wrong. I'm really not that good lol.

See if I can fit in a run later today, I'm starting to get a bit twitchy if I don't get out :o

Thanks for info re sprints, I feel like a right wally doing them but, according to my nike app again Hmm I'm burning 450 calories for a 4 mile run but I don't seem to be losing any weight :( has anyone lost weight through running? My diet is really good because I'm clean eating.

yegodsandlittlefishes · 27/04/2014 08:47

I went on a first muddy 7km run around nearby hills and fields yesterday in 1hr 13. I need to tweak the route a bit as much of it was not safe ground to run on and I'm a wuss but I was pleased to have even done it, as it has been a goal to walk that route for some time.

I washed my muddy trainers last night and now they're too wet to use. Sad I might be able to get out a bit later today.

I really want to turn into one of the people around here who run. Not be someone who seems to have gone out for a walk in their running gear! I can feel the change happening slowly. Each time I go out it is easier to run a bit longer and walk a bit less, and I am amazed already at what I can do.

Keep it up eaveryone! Sweaty summer will be here before we know it.

yegodsandlittlefishes · 27/04/2014 08:58

zombie to lose weight, you might find you need to drink more water. It sounds odd, but it does work over time. I suppose it helps to flush out the system and get rid of what the body doesnt need.
If you are going by weight alone, you are probably putting on muscle, which is heavier than fat. I have put weight on in recent weeks but I know I am stronger, I can feel my balance has improved. It is probably water retention and I'll lose it soon (when I get one of those days when I need a pee constantly). I am already heading for smaller clothes sizes (jeans, bras).

Am no expert though, and could be out of date with my factoids!

pootlebug · 27/04/2014 09:31

Fishandjam - good on you for stopping with that 8 year old and shame on her older relatives for leaving her Sad

Zombie - I've been training (run, swim and bike) for a few months and have hardly lost any weight. I am thinner and musclier though.

Well done to those at RunBalmoral and other races.

I'm off to a coached Running Workshop in a few minutes in my local park - should be fun!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 27/04/2014 09:50

Well done runners - this thread is so busy! I did parkrun yesterday, and am planning 6-8 miles later on. I have a HM next weekend so need to do something, but not too much.

If there are any WOLF runners on here (Blathers, Eau, not sure if there are any others) can you pop onto the WOLF thread please? Booking has opened, so lego and I need final confirmation before we get our credit cards out.

briteside · 27/04/2014 10:24

Hello all!

No run for me yesterday as DH was working but I spent the whole day running around after the kids, so feel like I got a work-out in! I will head out for a longer run this afternoon.

CQ thanks for the hints on the interval training - VERY helpful and I can see where my mistake was (Trying to sprint in my normal runs instead of seeing it as a workout on its own.)

Well done everyone on your park runs - fish that is shocking about the little girl! How awful for her but how lovely for you to stay with her.

sirzy I love running in the rain, but only once I am out and warmed up. Trying to get out of the front door while the rain pours down and that initial shock of getting wet while still cold is HORRID! I struggle to get motivated to run in rain so well done on getting out there!

lost I get rib pain, for me it is linked to back pain, funny enough...but I can stretch it out when I feel the first twinges. Don't know if that will work for you.

It also might be worth incorporating some core strength training? It helped with my rib ache, although I still get the pain when I push myself. Hope it clears soon.

I am off to take the kids swimming...no rest for the wicked!

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 27/04/2014 11:07

I'm so excited! I've just run 10k for the first time, just under 5 weeks since I became a runner! Can't believe it!! I'm so proud of myself! Running Race for Life 10k next Sunday and I just needed to prove to myself today that I had it in me!

supportworker · 27/04/2014 11:12

Iam that is amazing :) well done you!

10k next Sunday, wow that is great!

I have been running a week and am hoping to do 5k today, albeit intercepted with walking!

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 27/04/2014 11:19

Good luck Supportworker!

LostMyPants · 27/04/2014 11:43

Wow this is such a busy thread. Thanks for the advice on the rib pain. It was fine when actually running just sore after and still this morning but improving, so i think just muscles getting used to being used.

emummy I'm Aberdeenshire too. DH and i are thinking about signing up for balmoral next year. Not sure if we will do 5 or 10k though, but plenty of time to decide!

Climbing a hill tomorrow - this one: www.walkhighlands.co.uk/aberdeenshire/the-buck.shtml so no more running til Tuesday at least.

Good luck to those trying new things, and well done on the 10k Iam :)

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 27/04/2014 12:02

Well done Iam

Good luck with your 5k today support

Tell us about the coaching pootle

Well done on your PB emummy

7 miles in 1:15 this morning, and although it was a bit drizzly I didn't get rained on Grin

Enjoy your climb Lost

cinnamongreyhound · 27/04/2014 12:28

Yes there is a rule Fishandjam, all under 11'a must be accompanied at all times!

Hi LostMyPants and well done! I've had aching intercostals before but not sure what causes it!

Well done emummy, love a pb :)

I lost weight but was calorie counting as well zombiesheep, I used myfitnesspal which might be helpful just to see how many calories you're consuming. 450 isn't a lot really in the grand scheme of eating I'm afraid! You could also be building muscle and drinking plenty of water really helps with weightloss.

Well done yegodsandlittlefishes!

Fab IamMummyhearmeROAR!

No running for me today, ds1 is 7 Shock so did my long run Friday so I could spend the whole day with him watching him play skylanders :)

emummy · 27/04/2014 12:29

That looks like a nice hill Lost hope the weather is good for you. I would thoroughly recommend the RunBalmoral, it was well organized, plenty going on and a really nice atmosphere. Plus the setting is beautiful, so may be see you there next year! Iam,that's brilliant. Good luck with the race for life, hope the sun shines!

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 27/04/2014 13:18

This thread does move fast! Well done to everyone on their runs, I managed 5kms in 36 mins pushing my DTDs in their buggy, so quite pleased with that Smile

briteside · 27/04/2014 15:27

oohhh..Wolf looks like fun but is a little out of the way for me. I look forward to hearing more about it from those that are doing it!

Well done to everyone's pb's and increased distances...esp Iammumm on your 10km and your 7km yego

zombie I am trying to lose weight and also calorie counting on Myfitnesspal. I used MFP about a year ago and lost loads of weight, this time seems to be going slower probably because of the endless easter eggs I did find that I am needing to balance the calories with the running though, eat too little and my running suffers...

Blatherskite · 27/04/2014 15:33

I did 8.7 miles this morning chatting all the way with a friend of mine. It was good fun :)

I feel so much better for actually fitting in a long-ish training run too. Just got to keep these up until the next half marathon and maybe it won't hurt as much!

pootlebug · 27/04/2014 15:40

Wolef sounds fun but I think I already have enough events booked in this summer and I would like my husband and kids to still be talking to me by the end of it!

Iam - wow, 10km after 5 weeks is amazing....well done!

Running workshop was great. Some stuff on technique, some agility stuff, some stuff on changing cadence/stride to be more efficient, a bit of hill work, some work on core stuff and stretching (both of which I don't do enough of). I feel like I have a good few things to apply to my running and am looking forward to trying them.

Blatherskite · 27/04/2014 15:54

Can you send me another link to the WOLEF thread please OhOne? I've lost it!

supportworker · 27/04/2014 16:08

Some advice please runners of MN

I went out today, according to my 'schedule' I should have done a longer run today so I aimed for 5k

I was KNACKERED, I couldn't run very far at all because my legs were hurting, which is a first usually it is because I am so horribly out of breath that I have to stop but this time it was my legs.

I walked most of the course and only did 3.5k

DH thinks I should take a couple of days off, not run again until Wednesday rather than Tuesday as is booked, what do people think?

Chopstheduck · 27/04/2014 16:21

Sw - I'd probably take the break. Sometimes runs do just seem hard for some reason though, so try not to worry about it too much. :)

Well done on the PB emummy!

Fishandjam that is awful :( glad you stayed with her.

I did a steady 10k this morning in the rain, 1 hour 7 minutes. Sun just started to come out as I got home. Was lovely out in the countryside by myself!

Saw posters for the Windsor trail runs end of next month in town, quite tempted! There are 6k, 10k and half marathon distances, flat course along the river. Thinking about the 10.

KristinaM · 27/04/2014 16:33

When you say your legs are hurting, do you mean that you had sore muscles from the unaccustomed exercise or that you have an injury?

If it's just the former, one day rest woudl be fine, if that's what's on your schedule . If you are trying to build up the strength in your legs, you need to run slower but longer. So walking most of the way yesterday was fine.

Remember you are only allowed to increase your distnace by 10% a week. So if you ran 10km last week in total , you can do 11km this week , not 15.

supportworker · 27/04/2014 16:34

I will take the break, I just tried to stand up and I am stiff as a board and quite sore!

DH is now sorting out drinks and painkillers for me bless him

supportworker · 27/04/2014 16:35

I started running on Monday and have gradually been increasing the amount I run/walk and the distance I run walk.
