Ye I would think she will need to pace herself for it.

Kato I'd suggest making sure she has decent footwear to protect her joints and a good sports bra even if she is walking.

CQ I spent most of one day last week in my running gear. By the time I got out it had gone from frost to bright sunshine and I was seriously overdressed Grin

Mitchy1nge · 23/04/2014 22:07

she could Galloway it?

Mitchy1nge · 23/04/2014 22:08

galloway method

Hi all, am enjoying reading about the running clothes. I find that if I put my running clothes on before the nursery / school run then I am more likely to go for a run straight afterwards. I do this on the days I work from home and then after I have dropped the kids off, I drive to a nearby park for a 'treat run' rather than my usual boring routes from home. (It also makes me more accountable, at pick-up time the other moms that I am friends with always ask how my run was and I can't confess that I didn't actually go!)

cinnamon do you have a tracksuit that fits over your running clothes? On days where I don't want to go out in my running gear but intend to go straight out for a run, I wear a baggy t-shirt with my lycra leggings but then put a loose pair of tracksuit bottoms over the lycra.

kato wow - that is brave of your friend. She might be ok if she can walk it, I also hope she enjoys it enough to start training properly and does not put her off any future similair events!

briteside · 23/04/2014 22:10

sorry kato x-posted about the event discouraging her!

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 23/04/2014 22:12

That's a thought Mitchy - someone I know did a HM that way when recovering from injury and did very well.

originalpiratematerial · 23/04/2014 22:14

I have some running trousers that date back to when I first started running - they're miles too big now for me so I don't wear them for running in but they're good for slobbing in and also good for putting on over running gear as I don't like to be seen in running tights/capris unless I'm actually ready to set off!

originalpiratematerial · 23/04/2014 22:16

Oh that's really interesting, that Galloway method site! I must admit that I do usually drop down to a walk at some point during long runs - I find it just helps to get rid of the acid so I can carry on again. Now I can stop feeling guilty about doing it!

KatoPotato · 23/04/2014 22:20

He Galloway method link is awesome thank you!

Mitchy1nge · 23/04/2014 22:20

I think I might start doing it, unless is Higdon am thinking of (? Confused), my friend was beaten by lots of people doing the walking break method at the London marathon - I suppose is sort of sprint walk sprint but I will plod walk plod

am missing running but although a couple of miles seems ok and am happy on my bike my fitness must be fucked by now :(

Sirzy · 23/04/2014 22:22

I tend to run walk run but when I'm having a bad run spend too long walking which I need to stop!

I'm so pleased to discover that there is a proper name for " having to walk up the hills "

So it's not that I'm unfit, just that I'm training by the Galloway method Grin

Mitchy1nge · 23/04/2014 22:34

but Kristina you have real hills up there, no excuse for it in my bit of East Anglia (although the chain comes off my bike when I attempt to lower the gears up the merest incline Hmm)

I always felt if I stopped I would never ever be able to start running again, although I seem to remember stopping to spew during the 'experimentation with energy gels' phase

cinnamongreyhound · 23/04/2014 22:39

I won't have anywhere to put any outer clothes briteside as I will run straight from school!

St Neots sold out in 15hrs last year OhOneOhTwoOhThree! I was 1198 of 1200 as I couldn't decide whether to enter or not! The top is fab but It's the medal of Norwich the draws me Blush. Could meet you at st Neots though :)

I would expect she won't finish KatoPotato but nothing you can say will make a difference. I had a friend who joined me for a while, she assumed because I could run 5k so could she, soon realised how tough it is. Wish her luck and leave her to it, they'll be trained first aiders if she does have any problems.

KristinaM · 23/04/2014 22:42

Kato -the race information for Sunday says that you should, as part of your training, been able to run for 6 miles continuously . Do you know if your friend can do that?

There is no Maximun time to complete the race, but there is a sweep bus at 17 minutes per mile. Aftre that, runner will have to finish the Race on the pavement, as they will reopen the roads . But she can continue and will get a time(unlike in many races ).

If she is planning to walk the whole course, she will probably be about 20 mins per mile.

Given that she is very overweight and unused to exercise, has she taken medical advice on whether or not she is fit to walk /run 10 miles?

Personally I think it's utter madness, but I realise I'm the grumpy old woman of this thread

KatoPotato · 23/04/2014 22:44

Thanks Kristina, I need a grumpy voice because I do think she's making a terrible mistake! It's not quite a 'wear a feather boa and do it with the girlies' race is it?

She's seriously done no training whatsoever. At all.

KristinaM · 23/04/2014 22:46

Mitchy -you have inclines in east Angelia???? Hmm

I have left the proper hills of speyside behind and returned to the gentle rolling farmland of home ( with tractors, dog walkers and no townies in range rovers with guns )

Mitchy1nge · 23/04/2014 22:52

yes! sort of! an elevation gain of 179 ft for this evening's bike ride! lucky my garmin doubles as an altimeter isn't it

Mitchy1nge · 23/04/2014 22:55

or 535 ft when I cycled it in the other direction

Shock
OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 23/04/2014 22:59

cinnamon there is a month between the St Neots and the Bedford half marathons, so I could theoretically do both Hmm

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 23/04/2014 23:00

Grin Mitchy. I forgot to turn my Garmin off today and managed to cover 2 miles (or so it said) in my house before I noticed Grin

Mitchy1nge · 23/04/2014 23:04

that's impressive! makes me want one of the vivofit bands, I do SO MUCH walking in a pottering about with buckets and horses and stuff sort of way, it would be interesting to know how many miles it comes to (prob not that much actually Grin)

I must not buy any more STUFF though

I must not buy any more stuff

I must NOT

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 23/04/2014 23:17

There is NO way I covered 2 miles (most of the time I was on my sofa looking at MN and FB). My Garmin goes a bit bonkers when there's no signal and makes things up Grin.

Mitchy1nge · 23/04/2014 23:21

I switched the GPS off once for a 90 minute belly dance rehearsal (wore the HRM strap) and I think we covered a mile or so

am addicted to Garmin I think, want THIS
