Hello all! Wow, this thread moves quickly. How nice that we're all enthusiastic Smile

blathers, well done on your PBHM! But you know you shouldn't compare yourself to others, don't you. Aching is de rigeur, I'd have thought.

And hello to new posters and congratulations to everyone else on their recent runs. I can feel my mojo slowly returning... just need to keep the competitive streak squashed for now.

Where's a good place to get foam.rollers from? I could do with one for my calves.

I'm doing the same 5 miler as Eau on Mon but will just be happy to finish it Grin I checked and there's no time limit, fortunately. I did parkrun in just under 37 minutes yesterday which I fear was a bit fast - my shins are sore again today, dammit. Lots of stretching today!

yegodsandlittlefishes · 20/04/2014 09:57

I did my first ever 5k walk-run-walk in 55 mins today. Blush I had a bot of a knee twinge to walk out and lovely views distracted me. I would never have been here, if not for this run.

DH grew up messing about in boats on the stretch of river I ran beside. Last night I got him to walk (not drive) from to hotel into the town, the long way around beside the river and he had never walked along there. It was hugely gratifying to introduce him to a new spot on his own stomping ground. Grin

Last week I was running here. More places I would not have discovered if I hadn't been running/hiking. The middle hoof prints are where DD had been on her first ever beach hack (but I needed to repair my car wing mirror after dropping her off, and we then parked at the wrong end of the quite big beach, so I missed seeing her riding there.)

Well done all the serious runners entering races/organised runs/marathons. Not sure if I will ever do that, but I think it's wonderful that there are so many being organised and that it is such a popular sport now.

Good luck in your 10k tomorrow Roquefortlover!

Some slow release carbohydrates for breakfast will help - oats in some shape or form are ideal . Or a bagel with peanut butter. You could make flapjacks if you don't like porridge. Or Bircher muesli. Not just for race day either. It is not a good idea to ever skip breakfast for optimal health - your body has gone all night without food, it needs fuel for the day !

CardiffUniversityNetballTeam · 20/04/2014 10:58

Well, I did it! I broke the 5K 30min barrier. In fact I smashed it! 27:15. Grin Big thanks owed to KristinaM for suggesting running bits of it quicker and then slowing down. I went out quite quick in the first third, slowed down fairly dramatically in the middle and then upped the pace again for the final third, and it worked.
I think the weather, a good nights sleep and a real positive mental attitude really helped. Now to set myself a new challenge!
Good luck to all running today, the heavens have just opened here so I'm glad I missed that.

cinnamongreyhound · 20/04/2014 11:05

This mornings 5 miler, my legs only complained a bit! Will read back in a bit off for a shower now :)

Oh, that looks like so much fun. There's a canicross fella at my local parkrun.

Is anyone else on MFP? I want to lose about 10lbs but I'm crap at sticking to diets. Some moral support and arse kicking would be appreciated.

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 20/04/2014 11:13

Well, just finished my first 10km run in about 3 1/2 years Grin. Took 66 mins but not too shabby really!

Mitchy1nge · 20/04/2014 11:21

I'm on MFP, are we buddied up already? I went through a phase of weighing and logging everything with a neurotic kind of accuracy and drove everyone mad Blush so gave that up for Lent and have settled for just recording rougher estimates

I would quite like to zap what I think is a spare 6 or 7kg of fat but it does sound a lot and I am trying to set a healthy, laid back example so am going to eat more or less to TDEE and not record calories burned through exercise

didn't know you could take a dog to parkrun using the cani x thing! I haven't used mine much because rarely run with him somewhere where he can't just do his own thing

EauRouge · 20/04/2014 11:25

Well done, degu! That's definitely not a shabby time.

Don't think we are already buddied up, Mitchy, I've only had a go at it a couple of times and it was a bit half-arsed. I got really confused last time because it kept telling me I was starving myself Confused

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 20/04/2014 11:25

Such lovely runs! I'm resting today, but will go out for a walk later with DH and DS's and do a long run tomorrow.

Well done Cardiff that's brilliant (and wise advice from Kristina)

Fish and Eau good luck with your 5 miler tomorrow. I never got round to registering, wish I had now Sad

Blathers I was thinking about you last night. I think I have met some of the friends you were talking about when you did your parkrun tourism and I agree that they are lovely people (one of them had just run a marathon they day before IIRC and still had an enviably fast time at parkrun). But - and this is not in anyway putting your running down - it's like a Saturday league football player comparing themself to a premier league player. I think your hard earned achievements, as a relatively new runner are far more impressive than someone just popping out another marathon just because they can because they are 10 feet tall and built like a gazelle

Blatherskite · 20/04/2014 11:32

"One of my doggy running friends who's done serve all marathons told me to remember that a half is a huge achievement, and that it's sometimes hard to appreciate that when lots around you are doing multiple marathons"

This is it perfectly cinnamon! I'm losing sight of the fact that running multiple marathons isn't 'normal' and that everyone starts somewhere.

Feeling less achey today. Tried an ice bath for the first time last night and have found a use for those Zaggora hotpants that I bought on a whim as they're really, really tight so are acting like compression shorts. That and a large glass of bourbon and coke really helped me get a better night's sleep last night and I'm not feeling quite so pathetic any more.

Doing 10 before they feel easier seems like a long way off though!

Well done on smashing the 30 minute barrier Cardiff! That's loads to take off in one go! I did something similar a while back after falling into a habit of running at a comfortable pace and thinking that was as fast as I could go. It was only when I pushed back into the uncomfortable zone that I started getting faster again. My PB a few weeks ago definitely didn't feel comfortable!!

Blatherskite · 20/04/2014 11:37

You are very right OhOne and yes, the guy who organises a lot of these multiple marathon events was one of the people I brought to your parkrun one week. He's only ever run 1 HM in his life but has done the 10 in 10 event for 5 years running!

He was the one who did my recovery run with me the day after the last HM and who suggested the ice bath too. He's lovely. He does have a habit of talking about "when you've done your first 50 marathons" though :)

EauRouge · 20/04/2014 11:38

OhOne, I'm doing this 10k in a couple of weeks if you fancy it? And after that I shall be seeing how my knees are, maybe having a rest and then doing some Parkrun tourism.

Blatherskite · 20/04/2014 11:49

I'm going the Silverstone 10k on the 7th May otherwise I'd be tempted to come over and say hi.

Although it wouldn't be the first time I'd run 10k twice in a week....Wink

yegodsandlittlefishes · 20/04/2014 12:03

For anyone feeling achy after stepping up to longer/faster runs (assuming you're drinking enough water and stretching before and after) I recommend going to get your iron level tested at docs. Athletes use extra iron!

EauRouge · 20/04/2014 12:06

Dammit, I didn't know there was a 10k at Silverstone. I think I'll do the Silverstone half next year, I reeeeally want to run around there.

Blatherskite · 20/04/2014 12:10

No static stretches before a run though yegods - only after Wink

But you might have a point. I've had issues with my iron levels for about a year now and they're due to be tested again. I'm currently not allowed to give blood because they've been so low. I ended up at the hospital to see a consultant when they were really bad! I did eat a load of spinach the nigh before the HM but as my stored iron levels are the issue, it might not have helped much.

I'm going to make another doctors appointment on Tuesday! Thank you

Blatherskite · 20/04/2014 12:16

My "Running Wife" is an engineer at Red Bull so we had* to do Silverstone :)

Apparently, the 10k is the best option as it gets very, very boring running round there more than twice. I can imagine that being true as while it's very exciting to watch the cars go round, the views around the track aren't all that exciting.

There's still space if you want to come and join us?

so named because we run together a lot* as we're good mates and a similar pace and so she got named my 'other other half' as I probably see more of her than I do DH Grin

yegodsandlittlefishes · 20/04/2014 12:20

Really? Oh heck I didn't know not to stetch before a run. Must do more reading up!

Ah ha! Eating spinach won't make a bit of difference. If your levels are low enough to affect being a blood donor, I'd wager my hat that it's what is causing your stiffness.

(Caution: this is only for runners who are anaemic, as too much iron can be very harmful too. Some people have too much iron and feel less achy when they are active.)

EauRouge · 20/04/2014 12:21

Not sure I should risk two 10ks in a week the way my knees are at the moment, but thanks! I know what you mean about the scenery, it's basically just a field. Too bad there's not a Spa 10k, although I wouldn't fancy running up those hills anyway.

Blatherskite · 20/04/2014 12:27

Oh yes yegods, only dynamic stretches before a run. Lunges, high knees and butt kicks will help and don't forget your shoulders and waist.

My levels were seriously low. I was on crazy prescription iron tablets to try and help. Will get the doc to check me out and see if I need some more.

There's a surprising amount of running going on at Silverstone but I think only the half and the 10k use the track Eau. I'll let you know how it goes

feetheart · 20/04/2014 12:30

Ooo, rather tempted by the Silverstone 10k. Very flat course too :)

Blatherskite · 20/04/2014 12:31

This might help yegods
