I bet that's what they will be saying about you soon Grin

Mitchy1nge · 16/04/2014 14:01

god they'll never remember me for being fast, used to get back from my long runs not even slightly out of breath and hardly breaking a sweat, am so lazy I don't know how to push myself to go fast

I will be very happy if I can get back up to about 25 miles a week by summer though, I might strike a deal with the running gods and stay there and do slow half marathons if they will give me back my strength and endurance

Fishandjam · 16/04/2014 14:31

Crikey, I turn my back on you lot for a few minutes and when I turn around again you're 12 pages into a new thread!

I'll catch up properly later but I need your help, ladies - I have lost my running mojo Sad I'm trying to get back into it now my shins are healed but I have to be so careful not to get the same problem back again, I've just lost all my momentum. Any tips?

cinnamongreyhound · 16/04/2014 14:33

It's definitely good for geeks, I love looking at my stats and it's more detailed than endomondo as I'm too tight so only have the free one. I agree about it being more easy to glance down at but it is much more accurate than any app I've ever used plus as I run with a lot of runny people I feel more professional with it Blush. Was a birthday pressie from my Dad so I don't feel too guilty to have it!

cinnamongreyhound · 16/04/2014 14:35

My tip would be get out Fishandjam, plan a short mile or two run and once you're out there you'll remember why you loved it! Take it slowly and build up distance gradually and hopefully you won't suffer the same problem.

Mitchy1nge · 16/04/2014 14:43

fishandjam am in similar place, was having quite a long cry about it yesterday actually Blush probably everyone coming back from London and just thinking how did I go from being able to go out and run for hours to struggling to do three miles

the fear of re-injuring my calf is totally disproportionate to the pain of the original injury which I ran with for weeks, I don't know how or why I tolerated it to the point where I'd wake up in tears going ow ow ow Blush

but for my own personal mojo I've bought a new bike, it's not running but it's a close thing

ThursdayConsuelaLast · 16/04/2014 14:59

Yay Fishandjam, you're back!
I was wondering where you were.

I reckon get your gear on and go for a walk. Before long you'll remember how much quicker it is to run and can do a few intervals Smile

EauRouge · 16/04/2014 15:31

Fishandjam, you can start by meeting me at Parkrun this Saturday, it's been ages since we've both run it- my turn to buy the tea and cake. Are you doing that 5 miler on Monday? I tried to text you but I have no reception as usual.

Sirzy · 16/04/2014 16:00

Welcome back FishandJam. Get yourself out with Eau that sounds a good start!

Fish -I find thinking about going out running really hard. I do much better when I have a training programme to follow, because I don't have to think whether or not I feel like it. I just look at my wee chart and do what it says .

Of course this only works for people like me who like systems and organisation and planning. If you are a free spirit , impulsive kind of person you will probably hate it.

The other thing I do is tell myself that I can just do a short run if I still have a sore foot / calf/feel tired after x time /distance. Of course once I'm out there I nearly always keep going. But that way I feel I don't HAVE to do it, I can stop if it's not fun.

So defo just get out there. Even if it's just round the block . And please report back Wink

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 16/04/2014 17:22

Like Kristina I am better with a plan. For my first few half marathons and my full one I stuck religiously to the plan on the basis that, just as C25K worked, so would the other plans.

Running the marathon last November put me off running. I was a bit sick of running after 20 weeks of training. Then I basked in the glow for a bit and just went to parkrun and blamed the winter/dark nights/new job/long hours/commute for not running, when if I'd really wanted or needed to fit in a run I could have. When I had things to train for I put in a bit of effort - like going for long runs on Sundays - but not my usual amount.

I hate feeling this meh about my running, so can completely relate to fishandjam and Mitchy. I'm also carrying an injury which niggles all the time but doesn't stop me running. So I'm using this week off to run 3 days midweek to try to get back into the habit. Yesterday was fine, today was awful, tomorrow will be better Smile.

roquefortlover · 16/04/2014 17:50

I too like a plan-love ticking off the sessions as I go along and it gives me the confidence that I have done enough for whatever distance I am planning. Running club sessions are also good motivators though if no particular races on the horizon! Sometimes though you just have to go out of the door and like Kristina says trick yourself into it by saying you will stop after 10 mins. That usually does it for me.

Well, last night I was wondering about a spring 2015 marathon...and somehow I managed to register for Brighton Grin despite my worries about having to go to work the day after! I figure loads of other people have to do it and at least I can wear comfy stuff and move around if I need. so I will be joining you polka!! Am ludicrously over-excited and although DH thinks I am a bit bonkers he is being very supportive!

KristinaM · 16/04/2014 18:11

Well done Roquefort. Now we have a Team Brighton

roquefortlover · 16/04/2014 18:18

Yes I guess we do! Anyone else tempted to join us?Wink

Blatherskite · 16/04/2014 18:21

I'm still sticking to my "I will never do a marathon" promise. It keeps slipping but I'm sure Friday's half will improve my will power a bit :)

roquefortlover · 16/04/2014 18:43

See now I also used to say I would never do a marathon, but in the end I just couldn't resist! Once the thought had crossed my mind, however briefly, I kind of knew I would end up doing it ....

Blatherskite · 16/04/2014 18:52

Yes, I think that's where I am too roque but I'm still fighting the prospect

roquefortlover · 16/04/2014 19:08

Maybe if your half goes well eh Smile? Which half are you doing?

pootlebug · 16/04/2014 19:11

I filled in 80% of the Brighton form the other day....and then stopped because I really do want to do London....it goes past the end of my road, and is just 'the' marathon to me. I suspect I may only ever do one, so that has to be it.

Roquefortlover I also said I'd never do a marathon.... I know what you mean by once the thought had crossed your mind you'd end up doing it.

roquefortlover · 16/04/2014 19:43

Pootlebug , Brighton is only 6 miles from me so I completely understand you wanting to do your 'local' one too! For me I didn't want to get to the end of my running life, whenever that is, and think'ooh I wish I had done a marathon' when it's too late!

It may all go pear shaped of course, so I haven't told any real life friends or running buddies yet....

Fishandjam · 16/04/2014 20:31

Aw, thanks for the good wishes ladies!

I do have a formal return to running plan, which involves various core strengthening exercises and 100m interval run/walk. But it feels so tedious... I know I need to just get on with it if I want to run again though. I think I need to actually diarise it and earn points for gin and chocolate treats if I complete it. A star chart for grownups!

Yes to parkrun on Sat Eau. I am registered for the five miler but was unsure whether to do it given how hugely slowly I'll have to take it. Plus my physio is the one doing massage afterwards - can imagine him giving me a bollocking if he sees me Grin

Mitchy1nge · 16/04/2014 20:35

can I see your return to running plan fish?

I tore something out of an old runners world, it was basically 2 miles every other day then one week one of those would be 3 miles and it was very slow and went up to 5 miles (that is when I went all snivelly because used to not think anything of it, although was always apprehensive about long runs alone)

have cheered the fuck up on my new bike tonight anyway, deliberately cycled one of my long run routes, it's nice to cover 10 or 11 miles in an hour Grin is definitely the next best thing for me

Fishandjam · 16/04/2014 20:40

Sure m1tchy, I'll work out how to send it over.

I broke my Aldi duck today, and in my random and eclectic basketful I bought a truly eyewatering hi-viz orangey-pink running top for £5.99, so I have no excuse for not going out at twilight!

PolkaSpottyDotty · 16/04/2014 20:44

Ooh I'm loving Team Brighton!!

I'm now wondering if we live in the same town roque :) Begins with W? Actually, I'm not sure if I'm more than 6 miles away... Will google :)

Blatherskite · 16/04/2014 21:19

It's just a local half roque. There's only about 50 people running it. I have another 2 booked later in the year too.

Given how I felt at the end of the half I did 6 weeks ago, I'm guessing a full marathon will be a definite no-no by Friday night :)
