I have foolishly signed myself up for a marathon in October.

this year my longest run has been 4.5 miles. Oh dear, I need to get n with some training, don't I?

did a half a couple of years ago - which was tough.

Running is amazing. I didn't do any at all until I hit 40.

Burmahere · 16/04/2014 09:03

Oh wow lazypepper! Great motivator there then!

I could eat loads afterwards too and get quite light headed if I don't eat straight away.

lazypepper · 16/04/2014 09:47

It's the opposite for me.

I really don't want to eat straight away. I will have a drink of water - but food - give me an hour.

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 16/04/2014 09:50

lazypepper I'm the same, just can't face food for about an hour after a run

pootlebug · 16/04/2014 10:03

Wow this thread speeds ahead.

Well done, Orangeflutie - it must feel amazing to have completed it!

And Lazypepper that's a great goal to aim for. Which one are you doing in October?

I find exercising makes me want to eat everything in sight too - not straight after, but later in the day for sure. I've been trying to shift half a stone because it's so much easier to run lighter, and kinder on your knees, but despite a fair amount of exercise I have to really focus to get any weight off.

I am doing Ealing Half at the end of Sept. Never done more than a 10km before. It's 8 weeks after I'm doing the London Triathlon (1500m swim, 40km bike, 10km run) so I'll be focussing on my 10km pace until early August and then hope that 8 weeks with a good overall level of fitness is enough to focus on running and up the distance.

originalpiratematerial · 16/04/2014 10:11

Yes, I do watch what I eat. It's just a habit I've got into. When I was getting worried about my weight loss, I used MyFitnessPal for a few weeks to track exercise v. calories, and found that I tend to have a deficit of 100 - 200 calories unless I make a conscious effort to eat more.

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 16/04/2014 10:27

Must stop looking at lovely running gear! my wish list (including a Garmin) is currently running at something like £600!! Blush

postmanpatscat · 16/04/2014 10:42

orangeflutie I forgot to congratulate you yesterday, sorry! Well done on your amazing achievement.

pootle are you in Ealing? I'm in Isleworth but wouldn't do the Ealing half because my exH does it and I avoid him like the plague.

Theonlyoneiknow · 16/04/2014 11:22

I have been drooling over lovely running gear too! Sigh, must step away!

pootlebug · 16/04/2014 11:23

postmanpatscat - no, I'm the other side of London, but wanted to find a big-ish half marathon in early autumn without too much travelling and it seemed a good bet!

yegodsandlittlefishes · 16/04/2014 11:23

Those of you wanting/using a Garmin for running, what is the advantage of that over using an app on your phone?

I'm using Runtastic and it seems to be good enough for my purposes. (I'm still just getting to know the best places to go for a run, and am trying to always run from home and avoid car use).

pootlebug · 16/04/2014 11:27

All too easy to drool over lovely running gear. Have realised the only clothes I've bought in ages are for exercising in!

Does anyone know when Sweaty Betty are due a sale?

Sirzy · 16/04/2014 11:28

I love the look of sweaty Betty things but so expensive!

OP posts:
pootlebug · 16/04/2014 11:29

I use a Garmin rather than an app because:

  • I hate carrying my phone in my hand, it feels like it messes up my running style.
  • I can't look at it often enough if it is on my arm.

I have been trying to speed up - so I use my Garmin for pace much more than for distance. But that means I glance at it pretty frequently to make sure I'm still where I want to be pace-wise. Much easier to do with a watch than a phone. If I just wanted to track distance, I'd strap my phone to my arm and live with that.

pootlebug · 16/04/2014 11:30

Sorry should have clarified previous post was in response to Yegods re garmin.

Sirzy, I only have a few Sweaty Betty bits....all BNWT from ebay at significantly less than in the shops!

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 16/04/2014 11:47

Sorting out my pace is one of the main reasons I want a Garmin

and yes to Sweaty Betty! so expensive though...

EauRouge · 16/04/2014 11:56

I love my Garmin. I hated having a massive phone strapped to my arm and found that my running improved without it there. The Garmin is more accurate, although sometimes it can be slow to pick up the satellites. Runkeeper often had me running 20000km in a straight line into the middle of the sea Confused

And yes, Garmins are great for pace. You get to know your running a lot better when you can check on the go. I know some runners are a bit purist and think you need to learn to run without one but I hate running without it.

KristinaM · 16/04/2014 12:38

Another one here who uses the garmin mainly for pace. I also use it to check my splits when I get home. If you are geeky you will enjoy downloading the data to the PC and studying the little charts. It's quite addictive .

I'm training for my first HM next month so I'm using the garmin to help me work out a pacing strategy. I trying to learn how different paces feel without relying on my watch, but I'm not very good at it. On even the slightest incline, I feel like I must be running super fast but my watch says otherwise Blush

Mitchy1nge · 16/04/2014 13:30

am kind of enjoying running without my garmin, especially while I'm doing such short distances so slowly and with walking/stretching/dog related breaks

will take it out on my bike tonight though and maybe keep logging one or two horse rides a week as a way of monitoring their fitness!

KristinaM · 16/04/2014 13:32

Yup, but it will bugger up all your personal records ! That's assuming the horse goes after than you do Wink

Mitchy1nge · 16/04/2014 13:32

the phone apps never worked for me but my network is crap

KristinaM · 16/04/2014 13:32

I mean faster

Mitchy1nge · 16/04/2014 13:35

it logs it as a horse ride, his maximum speed is 27.3mph which is pretty slow for a horse but just a bit quicker than me!

I log running as running, walking as walking, swimming as swimming, cycling as cycling so it doesn't interfere with my records - should have just got a multi-sport watch really Confused

KristinaM · 16/04/2014 13:45

< impressed >

Mitchy1nge · 16/04/2014 13:50

so is he! he's about a hundred years old and only has 2 speeds - 2.7mph or 27mph

I remember when he was really fast though Confused
