February Shred Thread 2014

Starting the next thread for all those doing Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred - Level 1, Level 2 or Level 3.
For those having problems with their knees on the higher impact activities here are some suggestions from TalkinPeace:

^The secret is to build up the teeny muscles that support the side of the patella:

LOTS of balancing and yoga

  • stand with feet 6 inches apart, knees slightly bent, lift one foot off the floor, close eyes and see how long you can hold, repeat to other side.
  • stand with feet 6 inches apart, up onto tiptoes with legs straight, close eyes for as long as you can
  • stand on one foot, move the other foot to the front, side, back, side, in smooth semicircles about two inches off the floor - five each way each side before resting.

Alternative to skipping : march on the spot, bringing your knees up as high as you can.
Alternative to running : walk at jogging pace, pumping arms up to ceiling
Alternative to jumping jacks : half jacks, pump arms alternate sides and ceiling.^

Disaster! I've hurt my knee, I can walk on it but keep getting a shooting pain and it sort of gives way, my DH says I shouldnt do any of the leg stuff now but I dont want to stop shredding Sad

Mumtoh · 08/02/2014 18:23

Shredded this morning (L2 day something) after a few days off. Have had problems with lower back this week, connected to my knee problem I suspect. Found a YouTube back warmup video so did that first as I don't want to stop shredding. Happily, I managed it all the way through and only had to stop once (at the seated v lift bit) and managed mostly at Natalie level so feeling pleased with myself.

2tired you prob need a couple of days rest then go back on it if you feel better. Don't do the stuff that aggravates your knee, try to find a substitute so you keep moving but don't cause further injury. I know how you feel...

2tiredtocare · 08/02/2014 18:53

Thanks Mumtoh it's frustrating but I will try substituting the leg stuff

FlockOfTwats · 08/02/2014 19:58

Ladies, my knees feel very odd. Not painful as such but stiff and sore? I think its all the jumping around? Any advice?

Logg1e · 08/02/2014 20:14

The outside of my knees tend to ache on the second jumping jacks of L2. I was thinking about what others here have said about being at risk of injury and I think about the pain being the body's way of preventing injury. I just stop with the legs, and try to keep the cardio going with my arms(!).

tanukiton · 08/02/2014 20:30

give your knees a break it is good to have rest days!
Something which works for me (may not work for anyone else) . I do the work out bare foot and land all jumps on the ball of foot (think barefoot running strike). In level 2 I spent time on form and lining up my foot and making sure my knees were in the right position. I have old injuries in one and a wear and tear on the other.
What surface are you working out on? concrete is really bad for knees.
To keep the cardio up use weights and flap like a bird keeping your legs static.

LilyJoAndMe · 08/02/2014 22:54

For knee problems there are substitute exercises( temporary or not) at the top of this thread.
Give knees a break - if and when necessary- and then go back gradually to building up their strength. Smile

I did todays shred barefoot and slowed the jumping jacks down a bit and seem fine now.

Its the outside of my knees too, i read something about the small ligaments or muscles or something there that hold everything in place. I'm guessing its that.

Seems much better tonight anyway :)

LakeFlyPie · 09/02/2014 00:03

L3 D5 done earlier.
Was particularly red faced this evening possibly due to pushing myself a bit harder and also to not turning the radiator off soon enough before Shredding!

I definitely think the sore knee people should have a rest day, listen to your body folks.

Can't believe I've only got 5 more days, enjoy your last day tomorrow Tanukiton

FlockOfTwats · 09/02/2014 00:33

Oh and i was L2 day 3 today. Found it slightly easier - I didn't shout or scream today. Still sweat like a pig though. Managed the first set of plank jacks at natalie level and speed without stopping or struggling, slowed it down a bit on the second set but managed it without stopping.

spinningirl10 · 09/02/2014 07:56

D28 L3 d10 doneGrin

Those with knee pain definitely have a rest day or adjust those exercises!

Tiredemma · 09/02/2014 08:25

The outsides of my knees are hurting too- trying to 'adapt' my moves.

LilyJoAndMe · 09/02/2014 10:14

Hi there all,
Here rest day for me - Sunday plus it's my birthday Smile. But checking up that everyone's looking after their knees.
Let them in steadily . It doesn't have to be all or nothing. I've adapted my exercises when I've felt it's been necessary and I'm still pleased to see that my body is changing.
It's true that the knees do receive a lot of impact on Nathalie exercises so watch it - go steady and remember - No Knocking those Knees Grin.

Happy Birthday Lilyjo GrinGrin

spinningirl10 · 09/02/2014 11:46

We're away for a weeks holiday from Tuesday. That's day 30 for me so planned to shred before we leave but think we'll be off at 6.30am so maybe too early to shred!!
Thinking I might do levels 2 and 3 tomorrow morning and count these as days 29 and 30.....does that sound ok? Grin

Logg1e · 09/02/2014 12:34

L2D10 done (phoned-in the stretches at the end).

Mumtoh · 09/02/2014 13:03

Log don't phone in the stretches! It's really important to stretch at the end, boring I know but essential.

Managed another day of L2, not recommended with a hangover though... Had a fun evening last night leaping all over to just dance on the wii, back wasn't as sore this morning as yesterday so the warm up I did before shredding yesterday must have helped. I must have done around 10 days of L2 now so will do L3 this week. I am actually going to miss this, got Ripped in 30 to do next though. Shall we update on this thread for that too? I would really miss the updates and motivation if I didn't post here any more, it's definitely a factor in keeping me going.

TessTackle · 09/02/2014 13:48

Happy birthday LilyJo

monkeytennismum · 09/02/2014 15:38

Happy Birthday LilyJo !

I have a question please: should I be able to do each workout at Natalie level before I can move up to the next one? Or just 10 days of each no matter whether at Natalie, Anita or somewhere inbetween?

Thank you!

Logg1e · 09/02/2014 15:44

We're on our first time around and have done 10 (even when not up to Anita's level). I think we're going to repeat the 30 days and aim to be more like Natalie than Anita more of the time.

LilyJoAndMe · 09/02/2014 15:48

Thankyou soooo much for the birthday wishes. It has really added to make my day.Grin

Spinningirl, your doing day 29 and 30 in one go before you go on your hols sounds a great comprise to me. Have a great time eh !

Mumtoh this is the February thread so if you move onto a different DVD during that time let us know how it goes and keep clocking in here . The more the merrier.

And Monkey - OMG no don't stay on one level until you reach Nathalie level. If I'd done that I'd be doing level 1 till it was coming out of my ears - sometimes I still find myself reciting the commentaires along with Jilli .Grin

That's why some of us go back to the start after we've finished L3- trying to get nearer to Nathalie the next time round.Smile

Happy birthday LilyJo

I've just received my copy & discovered I need to get some hand weights. For those of you who have them - what weight are yours?

Been looking & wasn't sure whether 1kg would be heavy enough but don't want to buy heavier if it will make my arms drop off Grin

LakeFlyPie · 09/02/2014 20:10

Day off today, went for a swim instead, did 1km. Wondered if I might feel faster or stronger but didn't notice any difference although my stomach definitely looked slightly smaller in my costume so that's good.

Happy Birthday LilyJo

ErrolTheDragon · 09/02/2014 20:22

FlowersCakeWine LillyJo!

Caught up with my missed Friday yesterday so that's L3D5 done, and I did 30 mins on the rowing machine today as weather too nasty for walking.

Mumtoh, these monthly threads quite often have people carrying on to do other JM workouts, WillColbert is clocking in with Ri30 and I'm probably going to do that (again) next or the killer buns one.

Sorry for all you people with knee problems - am I the only one unscathed ? (despite being 53!) Don't know whether it helps but I take cod-liver oil capsule when I remember every day. Or maybe its an advantage of being a shortarse, less leverage than on the long-legged!

2tiredtocare · 09/02/2014 20:23

Hip hip HURAAY for your birthday Smile

L1 D10 and my big news I now have hand weights, what a difference from baked bean tins! Onwards and upwards to level 2
