Who fancies 10km of mud and obstacles? Come and join Team Wolef

Quite a few of us are interested in doing the Wolf Run this September so we were thinking of getting a team together.

It's for all abilities, it should be really good fun. It's not timed and it'll be too wet to wear your Garmin, so don't worry if you're not a fast runner. We'll be a team and no Wolef will be left behind.

It's on the 6th & 7th of September just south of Coventry, so fairly central. If we get a team together we get a slightly discounted entry.

If you're interested, post on here and we'll start making a list.

We also need to pick a charity so if everyone wants to suggest their favourite one and then we can argue about it for ages with no firm decision being made.

So, I'm in and my favourite charity is the Birth Trauma Association.

You can go round pretty much all the obstacles - they are in the middle of fields so plenty of space around them. They're really not that bad to get over - even the marshals help you up and over! The trickiest bits are probably the really boggy bits to walk through but if you stick to the edges you can use trees and the ropes to stay up and pull yourself along.

this is a good review of what to expect

Tiredemma · 19/01/2014 07:49

and the lady on here said she had to do a forfeit of 'pretending to be amonkey' as she couldnt get over the monkey bars- which will be me.

another good review

I cannot wait, it looks like so much fun Grin

It looks fantastic, and it'll be great to have a training goal.

Rollermum · 19/01/2014 15:37

So exciting! 70m. Swim sounds doable BUT not sure about in a crowded lake with trainers on!

Tiredemma · 19/01/2014 15:58

Rollermum- realistically we will be far at the back so unlikely to be getting kicked in the head by masses of trainers in front!

Blatherskite · 19/01/2014 16:04

One of those reviews said there was a shallow and a deep option for the swim so I'm guessing the shallow option might be walk-able rather than needing us to swim. We are all short though so shallow might be deep for us Wink

I think it looks like loads of fun

Standingonlego · 19/01/2014 19:03

I did a 5k very muddy trail race today...I have never run in really muddy stuff before...and you know what...it was so much fun! The final bit was down a hill to the finish and it was a mudslide with everyone going round the edge clinging to the little grass there was (to be fair many of them still had 1 or 2 more laps for the 10 or 15k) but I tapped into my inner Wolef and thought "sod this" and ran straight through the middle in the ankle deep mud :) I overtook about 20 people and got to the bottom in once piece despite a few dramatic slips and yells. Awesome stuff Grin We are going to have so much fun folks !

thenightsky · 19/01/2014 19:51

I'll be practicing my monkey impressions then, coz there is no way I can do monkey bars.

Swimming lake doesn't worry me. I'm a strong swimmer.

I guess we all have weaknesses and strengths and we will all find different elements easy or hard.

Standingonlego · 19/01/2014 20:09

The swimming is the super mega scary bit for me...swimming...in open water...with trainers on?!? I do not put my head under the shower Blush.

September is ages away...and like nightsky says we will all have different strengths and weakness, which is why we are a team not lone wolfs Grin

wileycoyote · 19/01/2014 21:50

Yes. Quite. My key team strengths are:
-Making tea
-Laughing
-A complete lack of common sense

GeekLove · 19/01/2014 22:06

swimming won't be too bad in September and there aren't any tides. Might be worth practising though. I intend to get to the Open Water centre near Kingsbury from April onwards myself.

Would a pre-race meet-up be out of the question?

thenightsky · 19/01/2014 22:10

Geek I could do a summer meet up if push comes to shove.

thenightsky · 19/01/2014 23:40

Does everyone have proper trail or x-c shoes? I will have to dig out my vintage ones.

EauRouge · 20/01/2014 00:02

I've got some Asics ones but they're too narrow for me and probably a size too small. I've only worn them a few times so if anyone's stuck for a pair then I'll happily donate them. They're a size 6 but will probably fit someone who's a size 5 better.

If anyone's looking for cheap trail shoes, Adidas Kanadia are meant to be good but the sizing is way off so you'll need to order a size or two bigger.

So so excited!

on the subject of running shoes i just brought some trail ones-Saucony pro grid-from sports shoes. They were recommended by a friend and were only £35 (they are on special and I got 10% off), just in case anyone's looking.

I was also speaking to a couple of women at Parkrun at the weekend about the race (they were in wolf run t-shirts so I accosted them). They both said it was ace. I quizzed them about training-they regularly run 3-5 miles, but one said she struggled with the first one as she had done no strength training for the monkey bars/walls etc, so she did 3 bootcamps a week for the next one and really noticed the difference. She also said only one of her team managed the monkey bars.

Does anyone have any ideas for strength training? I run regularly so I'm not too worried about that (although only did my first 10k in November and was pretty slow!). I am thinking some gym weights may be in order, and I may have to learn to do press ups too!

EauRouge · 20/01/2014 07:14

Do we get a T shirt or medal or anything when we finish?

I do the 30 day shred a couple of times a week, that's good for strength training. The first level is on youtube and there's a lot of similar stuff too.

Try freecycle for weights, lots of people are giving up their resolutions right about now Grin

EauRouge · 20/01/2014 07:45

These ones? BellsaRinging? They look pretty good. Hope they still have my size come payday!

These are the ones I currently have, but they are quite narrow and I didn't order a size up so they are no good to me (can't return them, I've had them for a couple of months and they are far too muddy now!). So if anyone on Team Wolef needs them, there you go.

OP posts:
Tiredemma · 20/01/2014 08:35

Im doing shred also and some arm exercises. I have no upper body strength at all and will fail at the monkey bars (unless I sit on someones shoulders)

I have Adidas Kanidida Trail shoes - so comfy and light so will wear those.

EauRouge · 20/01/2014 08:35

Does anyone know when registration opens? It says the Summer one will be open 'soon' so the Autumn one in a couple of months maybe?

OP posts:
Tiredemma · 20/01/2014 08:41

Summer one is going to open at the end of Jan apparently. So I would imagine around April time?

EauRouge · 20/01/2014 08:45

Oh good, I can use my birthday money for the entry fee then. I think it'll sell out pretty quickly

OP posts:
Tiredemma · 20/01/2014 09:04

Yes- I am back at work then also so will have money in my back pocket!
