Who fancies 10km of mud and obstacles? Come and join Team Wolef

Quite a few of us are interested in doing the Wolf Run this September so we were thinking of getting a team together.

It's for all abilities, it should be really good fun. It's not timed and it'll be too wet to wear your Garmin, so don't worry if you're not a fast runner. We'll be a team and no Wolef will be left behind.

It's on the 6th & 7th of September just south of Coventry, so fairly central. If we get a team together we get a slightly discounted entry.

If you're interested, post on here and we'll start making a list.

We also need to pick a charity so if everyone wants to suggest their favourite one and then we can argue about it for ages with no firm decision being made.

So, I'm in and my favourite charity is the Birth Trauma Association.

And I don't think the general public hates us, because they''ve no idea who we are...

jellybrain · 17/02/2014 21:41

Hi team Wolef I've been hiding as I have been very lazy.
Wiley I definitely didn't mean those costumes.... think it was a hat, still stupid though!
Fish that T shirt is lovelyGrin
Have decided to run part of the way to work tomorrow. There, said it now so can't get out of it Wink

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 17/02/2014 21:49

Have only just seen this thread.

Wow, that looks amazingly fun!

How on earth would you train for it though? Confused

Fishandjam · 17/02/2014 21:52

That's a very pertinent point schro. I have been wondering the same thing. Running is obvious, and my core strength is not too bad, but my upper body strength is utter pants. Any ideas, Wolefcubs?

Tiredemma · 17/02/2014 21:56

link to training -

www.thewolfrun.com/training/index.php?article=8

I dont go to the gym- but can do the planks/lunges etc at home.

press ups etc for upper body

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 17/02/2014 21:59

I can run with a fair amount of thought and preparation beforehand (joint issues) and could probably do this with the right training and preparation (and 7 months!).

No idea without training though...

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 17/02/2014 21:59

Oops X posts!

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 17/02/2014 22:02

But this will need serious obstacle type training/running in thick mud/crap ground etc. :/

EauRouge · 17/02/2014 22:03

I've got a rowing machine so will do plenty on that, and some press ups and weights for upper body. We've got ages, don't worry! It's not competitive, it's got something like a 4hr time limit.

OP posts:
SchroSawMargeryDaw · 17/02/2014 22:04

4hr time limit... Hmm. I might just actually sign up to this! I have a holiday at the end of that month though, slightly worried about a broken leg or something!

EauRouge · 17/02/2014 22:10

If you scroll back through the thread you will see our athletic stats (we are mostly short-sighted and short).

OP posts:
SchroSawMargeryDaw · 17/02/2014 22:17

I'm 5'2" and very very longsighted (had to be a bit different).

GeekLove · 17/02/2014 22:22

What about wolef fleeces to wear after running to warm up?
As for me some advice on chin ups please make sure your bar is secure otherwise it REALLY hurts. Or at least winds you.

Still some advice I have got from my trainer is to start with negative reps. Stand on a chair or step at the chin up position and slow lower down using your strength to check your decent.

Alternatively without a chin up do rows and press-ups with heavy weights and slow low reps. If the weight becomes comfortable it's too light.

Hope everyone else is doing OK.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 17/02/2014 22:33

Thank you for the training plan Emma

I think I will dust off my weights and 30 day shred DVD - I remember it doing wonders with my arms before Smile

Fishandjam · 18/02/2014 15:07

Right, I have asked the lovely chap who does our office bootcamp for some advice on training. He is one of these stupidly fit ex-Army types, who knocks off a quick Iron Man in the same way the rest of us would go for a gentle stroll. He reckons that while upper body work is useful, focusing on core and lower body strength and balance was more important as that's where a lot of the power lies (for things like crawling, running, jumping etc). So squats, squats, more squats, lunges, squats, V-sits, planks, sit-ups, squats, more V-sits, and a few squats. Plus single leg stands, press-ups on an exercise ball, etc. As well as running, obviously! For upper body and arms, as well as planks, tricep dips and press-ups, he told me to get a couple of bags of sugar and just hold them out with the arms alternately to the sides and to the front (elbows not locked but slightly bent) until it hurts too much to continue. Rest for a minute and then repeat, until arms are jelly, and then do it all again the next day. Can be done in front of the TV, apparently. When the sugar starts to feel light, find something heavier Grin

He also (separately and in a different context) advised against negative reps (sorry geek!) because you can end up trying to support more weight than your arms can cope with. His advice was "if you can't pull yourself up, you definitely can't safely lower yourself down."

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 18/02/2014 18:32

Right okay, good advice there. Is anyone going to be doing swimming for the lake thingey? Total excuse here to try all sorts of fun sporty things...

Fishandjam · 18/02/2014 19:32

Not on your life! I don't mind wading but actually swimming while fully clothed will be beyond me.

Mitchy1nge · 18/02/2014 20:14

if it's not too deep I'd love to be able to swim it, will keep up the swimming once or twice a week anyway but am a bit prone to panic in water so keeping an open mind

EauRouge · 18/02/2014 20:38

I can barely swim in a pool in a swimming costume. I aint doing no lake.

OP posts:
jellybrain · 18/02/2014 20:58

Would like to have a go at all of it including the swim. I really haven't done much swimming at all in recent years so need to step that up again- think it might help a bit with arm strength too.
Discovered another run in September which I'd love to do its a 16k from Paris to Versailles. Will have to wait until 2015 - I can't believe I'm wishing my life away in racesGrin Also kicking myself for not discovering this running malarkey years ago.

OhOneOhTwoOhThree · 19/02/2014 23:04

I don't mind getting wet, but will not be swimming as in lying down in water with both feet off the ground Smile

feetheart · 20/02/2014 07:46

Also keeping options open re swimming though can swim quite well in a warm pool. Would like to do it (said whilst sitting in a warm room 7mths from the event) but on the day...we'll see :)

Tiredemma · 20/02/2014 12:18

Ive just seen a picture on FB of the lake in the April Wolf Run.

Confused

Not sure its a lake ill be swimming full stroke in.

wileycoyote · 24/02/2014 22:52

Hi guys. For those of you, who like me have not done the wolfrun before I did an experimental 5 mile 'mud, sludge and soup' run last weekend through thick mud and up some major inclines, over trees etc.

I was BEYOND tired after 3 miles!!!

I finished it but have definitely noted having had a go in similar conditions that the Wolf run will be tough!! I would estimate it almost felt half to the whole of that distance again compared to usual running tired wise - and I was pretty slow!! :-D

Fishandjam · 24/02/2014 22:55

Thanks for the warning!
