Hi everyone. I thought we could do with a new shiny thread.

All runners are welcome here :)

A massive well done to all runners this week. I managed to get out today and did 3.5 miles in 32 minutes. It made me feel slightly less guilty about missing parkrun on Saturday (although it is the first since August so not too bad).

dd would kill me if she ever read this (she won't!). I'm so used to her being 8, I am still in "she's 8" mode. You'd think the epic birthday sleepover last week would have hard wired it into my brain...

MelanieCheeks · 16/11/2013 19:58

Pepe, that sounds like a great way to start them!

PepeLePew · 16/11/2013 20:00

Do you think, Melanie? I'm a bit embarrassed by how bad they actually are. I remember hating running as a child, but really want them to enjoy the health benefits and sheer joy of putting on your trainers and running. They see me do it, and I hope it's now become a habit for me, but I only got to where I am (still pretty lame) by being really structured - training programme, goals etc. I wondered if some kind of distance chart might help, but perhaps just a weekly run with hot chocolate at the end might do the job.

IsThatTrue · 16/11/2013 20:12

pepe my ds1 came to parkrun a couple of times and wants to come again but I can't seem to convince him out of the house at any other time. Maybe when it's warmer again. Dd however is 9 (just turned too) and I can't get her to run 100 yards.

Your strategy sounds great tbh. Maybe make them their own chart to record distance/speed with stockers or something to make it more of an achievement when they progress?

thinking about park run meet up - the run up to christmas is a bit crazy and every seems to have conflcting plans. Maybe we should plan something in for January instead so we have something to look forward to in the New Year?

Just a thought!

BellsaRinging · 16/11/2013 20:41

Pepe, my ds, also just 9, saw me running parkrun and one day said 'i can do that' and insisted on coming with me. we walk ran for 3-4 and afterc13 he is faster than me sometimes. not that thats a great feat! he is fairly acive in terms of running around at school etc but only rugby in season as an official sport. he loves parkrun now and can do 27 minutes. so i would say just keep running at a pace she feels good with. Just one a week is enough for ds to have a marked improvement week on week. also, sometimes he doesnt fancy it and i dont make him come but my rule is if he starts he finishes. some weeks hes fast others we walk run.
Lovely parkrun today for us...volunteering with a lovely bunch of people and resting up for my first 10k tomorrow. bit scared about that...

PepeLePew · 16/11/2013 20:58

Thinking about it, perhaps I should volunteer in the holidays when football club is over - we could marshall and they could cheer everyone on. Then see how we go from there. I'd take dd on the run (does she need/can she have a barcode?) but it's so fast - last week the slowest runner was 38 mins and we would definitely be the last. Plus the hills are tough but there is a flat run nearby - maybe that's something to aim for next year! We'll carry on with a weekly run, I think - we can end up at the playground and I can run laps around it!

OhFourFiftyNineThirtyFive · 16/11/2013 21:06

That works for me lego. Will your DCs still be playing hockey after Christmas? DS's stop with the rugby matches at the end of this term. I think they have rugby 7's next term, but it won't be a weekly commitment like it has been this term.

Pepe - there was a thread a while ago (maybe a loooong while ago - they all merge into one in my mind) about how under 10's should not run more than a couple of KM because it was potentially bad for developing joints etc - I remember there being some quite opposing views, but the ones who were advocating limiting distances were drawing on research, while those against were drawing on how their own DCs liked to do parkrun Grin. I think what you've described this afternoon sounds great. Neither of my DS's are great runners, despite both being pretty sporty - DS2 is a good sprinter, DS1 does a bit of cross-country because he's made to but that's about it.

Yay Melanie, brilliant!

Go cinnamon's mum, and go cinnamon tomorrow - make sure you come back and tell us how you get on!

OhFourFiftyNineThirtyFive · 16/11/2013 21:06

and hope DS is feeing better IsThat!

OhFourFiftyNineThirtyFive · 16/11/2013 21:12

cinnamongreyhound · 16/11/2013 21:34

Good luck BellsaRinging! My first 10k was in march I was a nervous wreck!

Sounds lovely PepeLePew. I took ds1 a while ago as he asked to go but it took us 50mins and he whinged through most of it! He doesn't want to go again! I personally don't think there's anything wrong with them not being good at running. Kids generally run around in a random way and to run distances you have to be quite disciplined to keep a steady pace and that can take some learning. We have a lovely little 7 year old who runs our parkrun in 30ish mins but he also plays football so he's used to running around for a reasonable amount of time. Everyone is different, it's lovely that you can do something together and you all enjoy it but don't beat yourself up if they don't become runners :)
We do a doggy run on a Monday evening and one of the ladies bought her 8 year old, he kept up with us over 4.5 miles which majorly impressed me!!

Thanks OhFourFiftyNineThirtyFive and I will :)

OhFourFiftyNineThirtyFive · 16/11/2013 21:45

Actually, now I've looked at the thread, I don't think it's the right one - the one I'm thinking of was a lot longer Smile

wem · 17/11/2013 12:37

It's not parkrun, but I wanted to put somewhere that I've just done my first 10K :) 72 minutes, not bad really :)

Back to parkrun next week!

Knackerelli · 17/11/2013 12:42

Wow wem, that's a fantastic time! Well done you!

wem · 17/11/2013 12:47

Thanks Knackerelli. I didn't go into it with a time in mind so wasn't sure what to make of it really. I was just pleased to be getting round and feeling ok about it :)

Blatherskite · 17/11/2013 12:56

Well done wem. My SIL did her first 10k this morning too. I wonder if your were at the same one?

IsThatTrue · 17/11/2013 12:58

Wow wem well done you! We don't mind general running chat :) all welcome here!

A friend took ds2 for a walk in his buggy so I could run today. I managed 5.2 miles in 46 minutes Shock I can give it some without the buggy!

I use the strava running app on my phone, they do different challenges each month that you can join if you wish. This months is a challenge to run 10k as fast as you can. So next week I need to do a 10k (preferably without the buggy), I'm hoping to do it in under an hour as my pb is 63 minutes something.

Blatherskite · 17/11/2013 13:25

Next Sunday I'll be doing Mo Run and I'm signed up for the 10k. I signed up purely because last years Mo Run was the first 10k I ever did and I want to see how much faster I can do the same course. I did it in 62:55 last year and have since got my 10k PB down to 56:45. I was hoping to do at least 55 minutes this time but I'm worried that not being well might have put me back too much too close.

You will easily beat your PB IsThat if you can do 5.2 in 46 minutes. You've only got another mile to add onto that and you must be doing 8 minute-ish miles...

OhFourFiftyNineThirtyFive · 17/11/2013 13:42

Brilliant time wem! Well done.

You sound super-speedy IsThat! I'm sure you can get under 60 mins.

Are you feeling better now Blathers?

Blatherskite · 17/11/2013 14:15

Much better (at least I was until I went out drinking last night!) The near constant headache has gone and I can breathe again - which is handy for running Wink

cinnamongreyhound · 17/11/2013 17:00

Well done Wem!!

That's beady (as ds2 would say) IsThatTrue! Definitely a sub 60min 10k.

Even if you don't manage 55min you'll definitely beat your last time Blatherkite.

I finished but it was bloody hard! I tried to keep with the 2hr pacers but they got ahead at between mile 9 and 10, once I got to 11 I got some momentum back and finished in 2:01:05 by chip timing :)

IsThatTrue · 17/11/2013 17:31

Great time cinnamon well done!
