Hi everyone. I thought we could do with a new shiny thread.

All runners are welcome here :)

A massive well done to all runners this week. I managed to get out today and did 3.5 miles in 32 minutes. It made me feel slightly less guilty about missing parkrun on Saturday (although it is the first since August so not too bad).

I would appreciate any tips on getting below 30 minutes. My pb for 5k is currently 31.20. I've just done Parkrun this morning but am not expecting a pb because I've been ill. I'm currently running further than 5k on the weeks I don't do the Parkrun. Is that on the right lines?

cinnamongreyhound · 23/11/2013 11:28

Hi karatekimmi, think I remember you from c25k thread?

Sounds like a lovely Saturday Standingonlego, my family are always still in jarmies watching tv when I get back from parkrun.

Oh no Blatherskite, I'm like you I want to get back straight away. Sometimes I think its positive but others I think you have to accept it or seriously lengthen your recovery time. Only you will know but be honest with yourself! Hope you're back to full strength soon.

I'm on the Norfolk Suffolk border OhFourFiftyNineThirtyFive :) about a 35 min drive from Norwich but beautiful run! Guessing your marathon means you're pretty much ready for a half?

I went to volunteer if needed today and wasn't so I ran, not a pb but nice and I've now done 20 running, 14 volunteering :)

cinnamongreyhound · 23/11/2013 11:30

Sorry rosy71, x-post as I spent ages writing Blush
For me I just pushed myself when ever it felt ok and got quicker that way, I also joined a club and training is a lot of interval training of various types.

PepeLePew · 23/11/2013 12:24

Well done parkrunners! Look forward to hearing the times later.

Blathers, I'm so sorry about your injury. That's miserable. Is a physio trip a possibility? I was really struggling earlier this year with knee pain even when not running and a couple of visits did make a difference. And rest. Obviously.

I didn't take my own advice, though - despite a knee twinge I went out this morning and ran 9k, which is the furthest I've ever done. Could have kept going but my knee was getting sore and I was mindful of the advice not to do more than 10% more a week (it was a bit more than that but I kept losing the path - which as I was meant to be following the river was a bit disconcerting). Slower than I thought - 57 mins - but I did fall into a pothole and spent a while swearing and rubbing my leg. I missed parkrun but it was such a glorious day, and my new gloves and jacket worked a treat, as did the running playlist my friend put together. Feeling good now, am off to meet a friend for lunch.

IsThatTrue · 23/11/2013 12:52

rosy I found training for a 10k race really helped my 5k time. And I swear by intervals. It doesn't gave to be anything more complicated than 5 min normal run, then sprint for all your worth for 50/60/70/80/90/100 counts in your head (whatever you can manage) then back to a normal run for recovery. Then once you're breathing is more steady, sprint again. It's massively helped me with my times.

Unfortunately I've been doing a lot of buggy running so can't do intervals (or poor DS would end up with shaken baby syndrome). Although using the buggy for extra resistance helps me too.

I managed 29.44 this morning in very cold conditions and I'm feeling Grin

Starting the podcasts to get me up to 10k is going to have to wait until the end of january I think - we're just too busy for me to consider it until then.

Blatherskite · 23/11/2013 17:12

I gave out flyers at parkrun this morning :(

It did give me a chance to chat with loads of experienced runners I know though which was helpful. All agreed that a tear would probably have resulted in a huge black bruise - which I don't have - so I'm hoping it's not as drastic as it sounded. It's still sore and I won't be running tomorrow but hopefully not as long a recovery as it might have been. DD's chicken pox have all scabbed now which means she can go back to pre school on Monday which leaves me free to see a physio but I'm not sure what they'd be able to do. I might e-mail the guy I saw last time and see what he advises.

karatekimmi · 23/11/2013 17:33

Well I think I need to apologise to anyone at the Telford one running a time of around 40 mins as my mini kimmi screamed the whole way round. I stopped a couple of times to check on him but he was just tired and refusing to sleep!! I had high hopes for a Push chair PB, but it was bit to be. My slowest time of 39.51

I think you're both Mfp friends from one thread. I've lost about 1.5 stone, but still have a way to go.

OhFourFiftyNineThirtyFive · 23/11/2013 17:54

No PB for me today - came in at 30:03. But a nice steady run. My right achilles/ankle/lower calf started to hurt as I was finishing my marathon training, but there was no way I was stopping Grin.

But I've only done 3 parkruns since the marathon, through a combination of laziness, kind of resting the bad leg and lack of opportunity - and one of those was as tail runner. I'd booked the half as a way of keeping myself going after the marathon and making the most of my fitness. I'm planning a longish run tomorrow and 10 miles next Sunday and if those go OK I should be fine.

Sounds like you had an eventful run pepe! What's on the playlist?

Well done Iwish and kimmi.

rosy - intervals seem to be the answer.

wem · 23/11/2013 18:15

PB for me - 33.42, inching towards 30mins :)

I hope it turns out to be less than you feared Blatherskite

Blatherskite · 23/11/2013 18:26

Me too! Which half are you doing OhFour? When my leg works, I seem to be easily managing 12/13 miles recently but I've never done an 'official' half marathon and I want to do one. I can't believe it was just weeks ago that I was scared of going over 10 miles!

OhFourFiftyNineThirtyFive · 23/11/2013 18:53

I'm doing the Bedford Half Blathers.

OhFourFiftyNineThirtyFive · 23/11/2013 18:55

I met someone at parkrun this morning who's doing the MK half in March. Tempted?

IsThatTrue · 23/11/2013 19:06

Well done to all runners, I'm heading out at some point tomorrow, and toying with the idea of doing 8 miles (I've only done 6.5 miles max so far) but it will depend wether DH is happy for me to be out for that long really.

OP posts:
Blatherskite · 23/11/2013 19:06

Ah, Bedford is the same day as DD's birthday party so I can't do that one.

I did the 10k at the Festival of Running last year and loved it even the hill up to the finish I got my 10k PB on that course. I had every intention of doing the half this year but DH signed himself up for it so now I can't unless I can get someone to babysit. I'll be there one way or another as I'll come and cheer you DH on if I don't run.

It starts and finishes at the Xscape building in the city centre so parking is a breeze.

There is a half marathon on the same day as the MK marathon this year too on May 5th.

I'm quite fancying the Silverstone 10k on 7th May next year too.

rosy71 · 23/11/2013 19:35

Thanks for the advice - I'd wondered about intervals & aiming for a 10k. Actually managed a pb this morning - 31.16 - so very pleased with that!

Runlikeagirl · 23/11/2013 19:46

Hi, can I join? I've been running since end of September, after a broke foot, although I ran regularly before dd and ds.

I got a new pb this morning at parkrun- 30.35! I'd always been around the 35 mark and then last week dh pacede and pushed me and I did 30.37.

I really want to get under 30, think I will have to try intervals. Although it is very hilly where I live- dont fancy sprinting up hill!

PepeLePew · 23/11/2013 22:17

runlikeagirl - hills are good too. You don't have to sprint up them, just try to keep the pace. Our local parkrun has four hills and I do find that just keeping a steady pace when I go up them when I am just out running really helps with general speed. And it's fun to speed up coming down.

The playlist is really eclectic ohfourfiftyninethirtyfive - some hiphop and dance and a large slug of American indie rock. She's in the music industry and a marathon runner so it's pretty good. If you're on Spotify, PM me and I can share it with you!

cinnamongreyhound · 23/11/2013 22:30

We do hill training where we have to try and speed up for the last 1/4 or at least maintain pace then recover down.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 24/11/2013 07:56

I think that I need to try some hills or some more intense intervals at least.

Having managed 29.44 today, I'm going to work towards 28 minutes now. I think it'll be another fortnight before I can make park run again though.

Runlikeagirl · 24/11/2013 09:05

Great! My park run has some big hills, really long ones too. There is another local one at a racecourse, so reasonably flat- I'm tempted to do that on week to see if I can go faster! Cheating though!

I go to a sweatshop running club and someone there has started doing speed training at abloval athletics track, so might try that too.

karatekimmi · 24/11/2013 14:50

My route is a there and back route, and instead of intervals I try to run back a minute quicker than I ran out (if that makes sense) not strictly intervals but it motivates me to keep my speed up.

I use the micoach app (an Adidas one) and it links to a programme on the website which has interval training in it.

Standingonlego · 24/11/2013 15:48

runlikeagirl my local is at a racecourse, if you decide to come visit let me know.

OhFour 11th Jan sounds great, just need to double check not skiing (not that we have booked anything yet!). Let's see who else we can lure out for a RL meet up.

Runlikeagirl · 24/11/2013 16:05

Ooh standing is it Ponte or York by any chance?

Standingonlego · 24/11/2013 17:28

Nope! It is an ex-Racecourse called "The Racecourse" in Northampton
