Well done wizzler!

That dog page is interesting watchingout :)

Fab speed MirandaWest, even if its not for the whole thing it's very impressive!

Well done originialpiratematerial, CiderWithBuda, Reiltin, EeTraceyLuv, IwishIwasmoreorganised, Dawndonnaagain and Minifingers.

Sorry to hear you didn't have a great run MaireadnotMermaid, never actually been sick after a run but have felt terrible! Hope you stop aching soon :) just seen your next post so you are obviously feeling better.

Had a lovely 10mile run today, without music again to get used to my race. Averaged 6.06min/km which I was wry pleased with :)

Morning everyone

Start of week 2 for me today, have been eager to get out all weekend, I am really looking forwards to being able to run for pleasure

Dawndonnaagain · 30/09/2013 09:33

I am sticking with week 5 run 1 for a week or so, until my shoes arrive. I'm still having to run barefoot on the treadmill and I have discovered that 5-6 minutes is okay, but 8 minutes and my feet are getting torn to shreds. Hopefully they'll arrive this week.
Well done to all, especially those who wear their tee shirts backwards, that's my kind of person! Grin

CiderwithBuda · 30/09/2013 09:48

Week 5 Run 3 completed! Can't believe it. And it wasn't bad. And I invented a new word. Plogging. A cross between plodding and jogging! Which is what I did. At one point my friend was walking faster than I was 'running'!.

I noticed at the end that Laura suggests repeating week 5 before moving on to week 6. Which makes it a 10 week programme not a 9 week one in my view but hey ho. Anyone done that? Not sure whether to move on or repeat. I'm leaning towards moving on.

Dawndonna - can't believe you are running barefoot! It can be good for you. Hope your shoes arrive quickly!

Mairead - respect of moving on to the 10k. Not sure I will be doing that!

MirandaWest · 30/09/2013 10:31

Well done Buda :) Finishing week 5 is a great feeling Grin

I'd keep on going to week 6 personally without repeating week 5 but I like to keep feel like I'm moving on I suppose.

Did week 4 run 2 this morning - pushed myself properly in the last minute of the last run and was briefly going at 4:56 per km Grin. Will try and do run 3 tomorrow and then start thinking about week 5...

cinnamongreyhound · 30/09/2013 11:04

Well done CiderWithBuda! I didn't repeat week 5 and dot remember it being recommended but they may have updated the podcasts since I did it.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 30/09/2013 11:55

Week 6 run 1 done in the daylight - I have to say that I prefer the anonymity of running in the dark!

My breathing is comfortable throughout, but my legs are still getting very tired quite quickly. I need them to strengthen up if I'm going to make it to 30 minutes.

One other complication is that my new running socks have left and right feet! Today I managed to get those right and my t-shirt on the right way round Grin

RippingYarns · 30/09/2013 11:58

I'm finding the podcasts surprisingly easy, I never thought I'd enjoy running, and tbh it does hurt a bit on my old knees, but it's great!

MaireadnotMermaid · 30/09/2013 18:19

You ten mile runners are my inspiration guys ;) I couldn't run 30 s 6 months ago

MirandaWest · 01/10/2013 09:06

Did week 4 run 3 and decided to find out if I could run the second 3 min then run through the 90s walk then run the last 5 minutes and it turned out I could :) and I "sprinted" at the end of the last run.

So hopefully week 5 will be ok although still not exactly keen on the thought of 20 minutes without stopping...
Not sure I can run every day this week due to things like various appointments getting in the way but will do my best. Not sure I am loving running yet but I am doing my best :)

MirandaWest · 01/10/2013 16:29

Hmm have looked at week 5 and week 6 and thinking of going straight to week 6? First two days of it look ok anyway...

originalpiratematerial · 01/10/2013 16:55

So after the podcast muddle on Sunday morning, this morning I did Wk4R3 and then, as I was on the way to work, carried on running and did another 3 km (very slowly).

Starting Week 5 either Tuesday or Wednesday, not sure which yet.

originalpiratematerial · 01/10/2013 16:56

I cannot imagine running 10 miles. But then again, a year ago I couldn't imagine running 5 miles, and I've done that - not many times, but I have done it...

nextphase · 01/10/2013 17:41

Miranda
You seem to be flying through the program. Personally, I'd stick with doing them in order - its not going to delay things much, but they do it that way for a reason - and personally I, and many others on here, struggled more with w6r1 than w5r3.

I'd really think about putting some rest days in, unless you were extremely fit before you started. My NHS podcasts strongly recommend a rest day between runs. That doesn't mean you couldn't do a different form of exercise tho. I swim between some runs, and others seem to do the shred DVD.

wizzler · 01/10/2013 20:29

Done W4R1, and going to do W4R2 as soon as I tear myself away from MN.
Ciderwith I can definitely identify with plogging!
Have not looked at what is coming up in W5, so am now v nervous having read this thread.
The link to the Pooch to 5K website made me Grin.. It would be great if I was able to run with Rafa through the woods , but he is not renowned for his good behaviour so will wait a while !

SarahWithAFringeOnTop · 01/10/2013 21:06

Seems a long time since I posted anything. Welcome to all the newbies!

Can anyone recommend a good running jacket (preferably in a sale somewhere!) I have an old "activewear" type jacket I wore last winter, with my mp3, inhaler and phone stashed in the pockets, but bought a waist pack for the summer when I didn't need the jacket. However that's not ideal with the jacket, and it does tend to ride up a bit anyway, but now I've got the jacket back out I find the clutter in the pockets bashes me when I run and annoys me (I think I must be running faster than in the spring, it didn't bother me then Smile) So... something with a media pocket higher up? or pockets at the back? Has anyone got any ideas? Does clutter in the pockets annoy anyone else or am I just weird?

cinnamongreyhound · 01/10/2013 21:06

That's fab originalpiratematerial!

It has to be up to you MirandaWest but I think the plan is well designed.

We did 4.6 miles on Monday night on doggy run but I was by far the slowest runner and I nearly died! I also somehow managed to get a very sore swollen little toe :(

OP posts:
cinnamongreyhound · 01/10/2013 21:08

X posts SarahWithAFringeOnTop, I need a new jacket so will be watching with interest!

OP posts:
MirandaWest · 01/10/2013 21:20

I can't cope with jackets at all - they constrict me too much. I only have my iPod on my arm and my house key in the back pocket of my running trousers/tights things though.

I will do week 5 and this week will have more rests in it :) won't be able to run Thursday or Friday although I will do a 10 mile round trip on the bike on Friday :)

cinnamongreyhound · 01/10/2013 21:26

I couldn't run in only a t-shirt in winter! I don't carry anything in it just keeps me arms from falling off when its -5C Grin

OP posts:
MirandaWest · 01/10/2013 22:08

I have a long sleeved t shirt underneath a short sleeved one. And I do have gloves and occasionally a hat :) Did a park run in March in the snow which was an interesting experience ConfusedGrin

originalpiratematerial · 01/10/2013 22:58

When it got cold last year (from end October onwards) I switched to a long-sleeved running top and that was ok for a while. When it got colder, I wore a cheapo Primark hoodie on top and tied it round my waste when I got too hot. Then when it got really cold, I had a thermal running top (with long sleeves) and when it got really REALLY cold I wore the thermal running top with a running jacket on top. And gloves although there were a few runs when I lost all feeling in my fingers as I get Reynaud's syndrome. I don't like running jackets unless it's pretty cold.

originalpiratematerial · 01/10/2013 22:58

waist

Reiltin · 01/10/2013 23:37

Here's a question for all you seasoned pros, from someone who hit W2R2 today Grin
My knees are in bits . Not sore but very stiff. I find getting started on the runs really challenging - pushing off and getting my knees working fast enough to increase from a walk to a jog ( or a plog, as someone called it!). My knees have never been great - again, not sore in general but for example, burpees over a period of time would have made them sore. Am I doing myself a damage running on them? I worry they'll just get worse and worse. Thoughts?

Dawndonnaagain · 02/10/2013 08:29

Week 5 run 1 again, but I decided sod my feet on the second run, I just wanted to try, I ran for ten minutes. I am a hefty size twenty and I ran a whole ten minutes, I can't believe it!
