Anyone else training for a half marathon?

golemmings · 23/07/2012 22:25

I graduated from c25k earlier this year and ran my first 10 race in June. A friend has told me that I can do a half marathon in the autumn so I've signed up for one.

I'm a week into the training programme (using the rw one for 2:00-2:15 finishes) and I'm finding it really hard going.

Is there anybody else who is doing a half who wants to share moral support/abuse/highs/lows?

Well done humble. I had a quick run around the block this week. Hope for a longer run tomorrow.

DH has been out for hours on a long run. He's entered both your next half (which I can't do as I'm away) as a warm up for the Brooklyn Marathon the following week (which I won't be doing as it's too blooming far!). So if you fancy keeping me company in Prospect Park for a bit on 18 November let me know Grin.

humblebumble · 20/10/2012 18:44

Neither, I'd definitely be up for a meet up. I'm very impressed with your DH, he is going to get very dizzy doing a marathon in Prospect Park,

Did you read the article in Runners World about it last month?, the article said lots of good things about it.

Idocrazythings · 20/10/2012 18:58

I'm doing run to the beat next weekend, and then that's it for a while- bring on Christmas season!!

KiwiPanda · 20/10/2012 19:58

Ido I have a friend at work doing that one too. Looks quite run - thinking I'll do it next year.

I've signed up to do cross country over winter. There may be muddy runs ahead!

Does anyone else have a totally non supportive family? Actually thts overstating it a bit - DH is brilliant and could not be more supportive of me running, he's fabulous and very proud of me. But my parents .. Total disinterest and when DH sweetly tries to talk up my running they just look totally bored. Just not a very athletic family I suppose.. But a bit annoying anyway

KiwiPanda · 20/10/2012 19:58

Looks quite fun! Not run! Stupid iPhone

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 20/10/2012 21:08

Kiwi I would love to do some cross country running, but no chance of it here.

My boys are supportive of my running, because they are old enough to be amazed that I can haul myself around. They are both pretty sporty themselves. But my parents don't get it at all - my Mum worries about my safety whenever I tell her I'm off to the park Grin.

humble it was the RW article that alerted him to it.

KiwiPanda · 21/10/2012 12:32

Just back from my 10 mile race. It was ace! Really nice route along river, well organised (roads weren't closed off but marshals did brilliant job holding back cars etc) and I paced it pretty decently too I think. 1 hour 15 mins. Grin I actually even enjoyed pretty much ALL of it GrinGrin

humblebumble · 21/10/2012 13:04

Kiwi - amazing! well done. I couldn't in my wildest dreams imagine running that sort of pace! So glad you are fully recovered and able to enjoy your running again.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 21/10/2012 15:06

Wow! that's great, well done!

KiwiPanda · 22/10/2012 18:56

Thanks guys! Did nice recovery run at lunchtime today with a colleague. Rather liked the fog we had in London today!

Issy, how are you attempting to increase your speed? I'm not familiar with the RunKeeper training plan. Do you have a 10km race to aim for?

I'd like to take another 30 seconds off my mile pace in the next few months. I'd love some ideas on how to achieve it. I really don't want to get injured in the process so any tips would be good.

humble have you seen that NYRR have published the dates for Jan-Mar next year?

So - would I be mad to do two halves a week apart? I'm doing Louisiana on 20 Jan, and Manhattan (which I'm guessed would be that weekend) is now the one after. Manhattan was my first half, so it would be nice to do it again hopefully not in a blizzard this time

humblebumble · 26/10/2012 12:26

neither I hadn't seen that. Hmm! I just looked at the race schedule and I can only see they have published the date for the March Half. There don't seem to be any for January that I can see. I wonder if they put them up and then took them down again.

I'd consider doing two halfs on consecutive weekends ...but if there was a blizzard I may not do the second one There was an article about doing halfs/full marathons a wee apart. I think it was Runners World last month or the month before.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 27/10/2012 02:48

Humble here is the calendar for next spring.

Idocrazythings · 28/10/2012 16:45

Hope all you guys in NYC are safe and well thinking of you xx

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 28/10/2012 17:23

Thank you Ido. I was out this morning volunteering at a race (far more fun that I'd expected - I was handing out apples and bagels at the finish) but am happily tucked up at home for the afternoon now. My apartment looks south down the East River, so I will see Sandy coming Grin.

A friend who lives over the river in Brooklyn posted on FB to say people are panic buying candles at her local supermarket Shock.

Idocrazythings · 28/10/2012 20:31

Take care Shredded. Sending out lots of positive thoughts Smile

Idocrazythings · 29/10/2012 07:06

I did my run to the best yesterday. I didn't do as well as the Oxford half (I did it in 2.30.) which is 10 min slower [hblush] but I'm still happy as I did have to stop and go to the toilet; and my knees were suffering too. (So much so I sat in a cold bath last night- considering doing it again)

I also stunk out the tube with the tiger balm I smothered on them pre and post race hehe hopefully most people like the smell of it!

I think I'm going to cut back on the running for a while and work on strengthening my legs, a few of you have mentioned spinning- is that the best thing to do?

Well done Ido and Issy!

humble - are you OK?

Idocrazythings · 29/10/2012 19:36

Is it just you shredded, and humble in NYC that we know of?

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 29/10/2012 20:46

Ido - there are some other NY'ers/New Jersey residents on the Living in the USA thread (which I hardly ever go on). Fingers crossed humble is OK.

humblebumble · 29/10/2012 21:13

Hi everyone.
We are fine. We live quite high up near Prospect Park so there are no concerns about flooding. I understand all of the lower level near the water have been evacuated. It is really windy.

It's like Christmas or Thanksgiving in our house as I have visitors and we are slowly working through our supplies. Grin The biggest challenge is keeping 2 children entertained. Thank goodness for visitors!
