Will post the race list later on computer.
Come one, come all. We are a band of maverick posters who run, talk about running, and talk about other stuff, mostly life, large pants, and questionable children's artwork. Come and join us if you dare! Disclaimer: we are actually the friendliest thread on MN. Fact.

Well done on getting out peach - that's pretty good with not having been running for a while.

Morven and running those races sound interesting! Am trying to persuade a couple of friends to sign up for the London to Brighton 100K but am trying to figure out how I can fit in the long run training. Fitting in 14 - 15 miles is okay in terms of time but was wondering how far/ long do you go on your long runs? Looked at a few training plans and looks like you need to be doing 25 - 30 mile runs once a week plus a few 4 - 10 miles runs per week as well.

RunningAllDay · 05/01/2012 18:18

Will be v interested to see what morven replies, cest!

cest I did the Oxfam trailwalker in july this past year (62 miles). Had no intention of running it (its a team event and I was doing it with walkers), but my training consisted of a LOT of walking, plus running two or three times a week. The longest I walked was 30 miles (took me all day); I also did back-to-back 22 mile walks (i.e. sleeping in between). I did one team practice walk all night too (about 20 miles, from memory) where we walked the night section of the actual route. I also trained for a half-marathon in the May, and ran several 13 milers. There was no way I could have done this were I not a SAHM! The 22-milers were the max I could fit in from dropping the kids off at 9am and picking them up at 3.30pm. In the actual event, the ghurkhas ran it in 9 hours. It took us 26 hours.

So I cannot imagine running 62 miles. For the Wye Forest 50 (which again, is a long-distance walk, rather than a run - though people do run it) I have my marathon training which will take me up to 22 miles. If I have the energy and ability, I may carry on training up to 30 miles. But I don't think I can run the whole route (8000 feet as well as the distance) so will have to make a decision about strategy (i.e. which shoes to wear!). I will also be with family, so it depends on how much I want to do by myself. Being in a team has a lot going for it, even if times are significantly slower!

For the London-Brighton one, is it relay (?not sure where I got that idea?), or do you do it as a team? I reckon it is a big training commitment - my team members for Trailwalker all spent their weekends walking, two were single and childfree which helped; the fourth struggled to get the training but he's a strong walker, and ended the walk with destroyed feet. But you do need an understanding family!

RunningAllDay · 05/01/2012 18:21

And yes ibby, anaemia is the usual suspect. Just wondered if anyone else had regular feelings of crapness related to increased running!

futurity · 05/01/2012 18:38

ibby yes..that's me! I did send a message as well but that might not get through until we are linked up?

Also off to running club tonight ...thankfully wind seems to have calmed.

Just been looking at Moshi pictures on FB..I have house envy!

cestlavie · 05/01/2012 18:52

Shock running! Oh my god, that sounds tough. There is absolutely no way I'd be able to do that amount of training. I was (in my addled head) thinking that sticking in a 20 - 25 mile run alongside normal running of 4 - 10 miles would see you through fairly nicely but it doesn't sound like it!

Mind if I PM you to ask a bit more rather than bore everyone else on here about it?!

RunningAllDay · 05/01/2012 19:30

cest no probs. Sorry if I blithered on Blush. Sould be keen to see morven's training plan if (s)he wants to share

squix · 05/01/2012 19:39

Not done a walk of quite that magnitude cest but did do the moonwalk (marathon distance) a few years ago, before dd. Not surprisingly the training was lots of walking. I found that the walking was v. Different to running, for a start it is much longer on your feet. Even at a decent pace you are on your feet for at least twice as long. I would just download an audio book and set off for the day. I also found a 2 week walking holiday in Italy walking 15-20k a day about 4 weeks before the event helped too. Grin

orangeLFDThead · 05/01/2012 19:53

Welcome Morvern
oh bumply sorry but your glasses story did make me Grin. You did check them for spiders or other insects when you found them before you put them on.
Wow peach I bet you feel great Smile. You did really well.
Right I am thinking of finally giving in regarding fb, can someone pm me thanks.

liath · 05/01/2012 19:57

Happy New Year folks. Good to see we've been braving hurricanes and ninja lamp-posts and trees in our quests for rubbing glory Grin.

Well done, Peach, great effort. Hope the under-carriage held up Grin.

Good luck on Saturday, Bumply. If you see a loon with a small dog shouting encouragement at anyone in a crocheted hat that'll be me!!

I'm planning to do the Lyke Wake walk this year as my Dad really wants to do it (he did it several times in his youth). It's 40 miles. I'd love to do ultra-running but am not sure I'm built for it. Have a 20 mile hill race planned for this summer, would love to do the Hadrian's Wall run in 2013.

Have been back in the saddle so to speak, shin aching a little running but fine after. Still taking it cautiously.

Welcome to morven and 8oreighty. I run with my dog, it's great as an excuse to stop for a breather. The main issue is I usually wear a gilet with big pockets for the lead, poo bags and dog treats (his recall is crap) and then overheat.

fannybanjo · 05/01/2012 20:05

Ah fuck - I'm neglecting MN now I'm back
on FB... Blush. Can't do both!

Apologies it's gonna be a meme meme post as I'm going to bed soon as done in - I'm doing 22 miler tomorrow, it's in my plan but I'm worried that I haven't banked enough miles this week and I'm throwing this huge run on at the end. I've only ran 13 miles this week - I should be ok, shouldn't I?

rhetorician · 05/01/2012 20:13

fanny MN is by far the superior one! I wouldn't worry too much about neglecting mileage this week - they reckon that recovery from a 20 miler takes about 2 weeks, and a lot of runners would only do a long run every fortnight. If you were regularly trying to do 22 milers off a total weekly mileage of 35 then that would be a concern, but you're not. The long run is usually supposed to be no more than 1/3 of the weekly mileage, but this doesn't always work out. I always try and think in terms of monthly, really on mileage - my log gives me miles for the last 7 days and the last 30, and I don't really like the latter number to go much under 150km and prefer it to be around 200. It's currently 116 for the 30 days and a much more respectable 38.5 for the 7.

Just been nosing at moshi's pics on fb - it looks like something out of a film!

fannybanjo · 05/01/2012 20:38

Good advice rhet - just looked on Garmin
and past month's mileage (since 5 Dec) is 160 miles. Now considering I've 3 kids and it's been Xmas - that ain't too bad... I'll be fine and yep, I aim to leave at least 2 weeks between very long runs (over 16 miles). I have my race 2 weeks on Sunday so perfect time to do this 22 miles is tomorrow.

Oh yes, MN far superior however I'm getting all FB obsessed as I'm nosing at loads of old school friends photos and finding people again. Once I've been on it a week or so, I'll die down and not bother too much with it lying bitch Grin

futurity · 05/01/2012 20:42

I've just accepted CT on FB but realise I don't know who you are on here!?

Just back from running club...4.14 miles in 39.08..average of 9:28 min/miles!
My splits (as I am chuffed:)

Mile 1: 9:45
Mile 2: 9:34
Mile 3: 9:19
Mile 4: 9:16
Mile 5: 8:59

Look at me creeping into 8 min / mile (for .14 of a mile lol) .. :)

rhetorician · 05/01/2012 20:44

thought that this article on what makes a successful runner might be a good start for us all in 2012.

160 miles! pretty good - my crown as big mileage queen is clearly under threat (in my defence, xmas, newborn, job...)

orangeLFDThead · 05/01/2012 20:47

Sorry futurity its me.

peachsmuggler · 05/01/2012 20:49

Nice splits futurity, and speeding up every mile!!

Fanny! Get back here lassie, though do have a look at Moshi's new house. T'is luverly!!!!

Felt quite hungry today, after running. Just had a piece and jam, as we say in Scotland (jam sandwich to you southern softies!). How healthy! Luckily had banana and apple this avo, so poor old bum bum won't have to fear the poo monster.

peachsmuggler · 05/01/2012 20:52

Oooh orange, can you fb me? Am friends with Futurity and t'others. Initials, RS.

fannybanjo · 05/01/2012 20:52

Well done futurity!! Makes you feel all warm inside when a successful run has been had!

Oh I've seen the pics of Moshi abode... EnvyEnvyEnvy Smile it's absolutely fabulous!

orangeLFDThead · 05/01/2012 21:02

Done peach. Only managed to find a few people, will work my way through Smile

fishie · 05/01/2012 21:06

well done futurity. but I don't quite understand how it works, these splits. I'd like to join a running club but don't like running on roads.

I did 55m 10k tonight which is what I'd expect. But bloody dog makes me 8k 60m is this so poor as to be almost a walk?

8oreighty i dont know who you are so of course we are friends. if somene would kindly dm me for the fb I would be v grateful.

backwardLFDTpossom · 05/01/2012 21:12

Thanks rhet, good article :)

rhetorician · 05/01/2012 21:15

fabulous work, futurity really great splits

backwardLFDTpossom · 05/01/2012 21:29

Oh so many of my friends have signed up for Edinburgh Marathon.... do I, don't I?! Aaargh! I don't know if I could. The half almost killed me last year... I can do about 10 miles pretty comfortably at the moment, the marathon is on the 27th of May which is 20 weeks on Sunday. What do you think, is it do-able?

sfxmum · 05/01/2012 22:05

hello to morven lovely to have you around, always great for inspiration

peach fantastic first outing, keep it up, the old pelvic floor can only get better, keep the kegels going

futurity really impressive progress, and seem on a proper high about, justifiably so

about moshi am loving the blue skies and the greenery, I am sure she will do well there

I am sure I missed loads, but really sleepy now, stayed up until 4.30 to finish and send essay, napped a bit but need bed now

dh weighed himself and got a fright, I am forbidden to mention how heavy he is now, unless he tries to get out of going out running with me tomorrow.
I desperately need it too

bonkersLFDT20 · 05/01/2012 22:06

backward GO FOR IT!

Had a good run today in the darn wind. Proper messed my hair up it did.

Going to bed now. I'm a bridesmaid on Saturday don't you know!
