Will post the race list later on computer.
Come one, come all. We are a band of maverick posters who run, talk about running, and talk about other stuff, mostly life, large pants, and questionable children's artwork. Come and join us if you dare! Disclaimer: we are actually the friendliest thread on MN. Fact.

Hi all, am shattered. Flopped on sofa watching Buzzcocks.

Did my little 5k this evening, really felt it after double Shred / checked on myfit and apparently once I take off my calories used up running and shredding I've only taken in 668 calories Hmm. Could explain the headache!

Will catch up tomorrow, night all.

orangeLFDThead · 05/01/2012 22:15

Not that I am any expert in half's but I reckon you go for it too backward.
You a bridesmaid bonkers. How exciting, What colour is your dress?
Someone said a few days how lovely everyone kids are lovely (fanny I think) now I can see pics have to agree.

orangeLFDThead · 05/01/2012 22:18

I don't know how you can run after a double shred, your mad and def need more calories. Hope your head feels better soon.

DebiTheScot · 05/01/2012 22:23

I'm missing some of you as fb friends I think. My first name is obvious and I've got sunglasses on in my photo (you can probably see my wonky eyebrows)

Full day of full on teaching today, revision session after school and yr11 parents evening, shattered!

I discovered the other day that there's a 100 mile ultra-run about 4 miles from my house in October. There's also a 50 mile one on the same day and a 30 mile one that starts at midnight (and so finishes about the same time as the 100). I got a bit obsessed and was reading all about it including a very, very detailed race report from the winner of the 100 miles. Think it's a wee bit beyond me though!
I'm amazed at the Gurkas being able to do 62 miles in 9 hours as the winner of the 100 miles took 20 hours.

Printed off my HM plan today. It's a 10 week one and starts of with what 4 runs of between 3 and 4 miles which should suit me as I've only been doing 2 or 3 runs a week of 3-4.5 miles for the past few weeks so it's not too much of a jump. My shins were a bit twingy today but I think they're ok.

orangeLFDThead · 05/01/2012 22:32

I have fb you debi.

orangeLFDThead · 05/01/2012 22:35

Love the lego picture debi. My boys are a bit obsessed with lego.

peachsmuggler · 05/01/2012 22:44

Go on Debi, do a 100 mile ultra! After all it's local, it would be rude not to! Wink

possum. I definitely think you could! Lots of people train from scratch over 20 weeks. Do you have the time to devote to it do you think?

bonkers, yes, do tell about your dress!

orange, I have accepted you on fb. You have a fantastic name, I absolutely love it!

shred you are a madwoman! Don't you need about 1200 just to function? Will you be getting more calories in a few days? Isn't headache symptom of high protein diet? Take care of yourself.

Was reading an article in RW which am sure a lot of you also perused with interest. Paul Tonkinson writing about the state of his bladder/bowels when running. I read it and thought of you all!

sfx, look at you pulling an allnighter (bloody stoooodent!). Tell DH if he doesn't go out for a run tomorrow with you, we will hold a raffle to guess his weight. First prize is one of them frou frou cakes. Smile

After only 4.5 hours sleep last night, I should really be in bed but watching Ab Fab instead.

DebiTheScot · 05/01/2012 22:49

Got you orange. Just out of interest how much could you see before I accepted you? I didn't think my photos were visible, maybe I need to check settings. Don't want pupils spying on me!

stickyLFDTfingers · 05/01/2012 23:00

hiya - everyone seems very ambitious tonight! 100 miles - wow. Though I've fancied the Lyke Wake Walk for a while, not too far away from me. Have had some happy pints at the Lion Inn at Blakey! Amazing pub.

Orange I think I just FB requested you...

shred hope you're feeling better. You seem to be going all out at the moment, don't be too tough on yourself now.

Good stuff rhet and futurity! And good luck fanny with the 22 miler tomorrow. Did you say before that you don't really take anything to eat with you, or did I imagine that? I took 2 gels with me on the 17 miler, and I don't think it was enough, because I was feeling really quite weird for the last few miles.

I think I've worked out what I was doing wrong with the Garmin, it's just too clever for me! Though in other news, I managed to set fire to a tin opener this evening. Competent! Blush

peachsmuggler · 05/01/2012 23:09

Set fire to a tin opener sticky.... A wooden one???

rhetorician · 05/01/2012 23:11

have friended some people on facebook but now I am even more confused than before!

sticky how on earth do you set fire to a tin opener? Shock

gonna get in 10k after nursery drop-off tomorrow - won't be able to run at the weekend due to visiting my mother - probably will take about the same amount of time as fanny's 22 miles! is it just me, or did fanny just suddenly start running huge distances?

stickyLFDTfingers · 05/01/2012 23:18

rhet I take my hat off to you, you're really good at fitting in pretty long distances in your extremely busy life (am feeling inadequate that I don't get more done in my extremely unbusy one).

No it's not wooden Grin (to go with the chocolate teapot) - but it seems that the plastic bit that you turn is inflammable, and if one is stupid enough to leave it near the stove top when one is cooking a nice sauce to go on a baked potato, suddenly the nice cooking smells turn into acrid plastic burning smells... bet that never happened on Masterchef.

stickyLFDTfingers · 05/01/2012 23:21

there was a flame and everything Blush.

Actually can I open my question to the floor - anyone who runs over 13 miles - how much (if anything) do you take with you eating wise (I sound like such a greedy guts Blush). I'm not good at coping with being hungry/low blood sugar, get all fainty and odd(er than usual).

SonicMiddleAge · 06/01/2012 04:43

peach - great that you're back out again - the first exercise after you've had a baby feels so good doesn't it. I remember the first time I left dd1 for more than about 10 min was to go spinning and it felt so good to just get the mental space back to myself as much as anything.

Now, Ok, so I know this is a bad idea, so please don't all tell me so, but... with my upcoming knee op. I won?t make the Darlington HM in march, and DH has his birthday in feb, so we?re going down south to stay in a nice hotel for the weekend, and he?s going to do the jetty swim race (3.4km). There?s also a HM that weekend, and I?m thinking of just doing it so I get one in before my op. I?m currently up to 16km on my weekend run, so while it won?t be fast I?d like to think I?m fit enough to get round. My plan is to go out this weekend and bump up the km to 18-19 and if I can do that without too much difficultly I think I?ll consider I?m ok to try. The two questions I have for those more experienced:

As the moment, I?m doing a long weekend run (16km) plus a one hour mixed intervals/boxing session a week (basically running up and down hills with boxing in between), Pre xmas I was also doing a 8km once a week as well. For a HM on the 4th Feb, I was thinking a long run tomorrow (18/19km) then another of the same length the following sat, then scale back to 14 km on the 21st Jan and prob about 10-8km or so on the 28th. Does that sound about right in terms of scaling up and back? Also when I step up the extra 5 km ? should I try and slow my pace or do you think it?s going to be achievable to run the first 16km as I normally do, and then just try and hold on to a similar speed for the extra distance at the end? One benefit I?ll have is my weekend run has some good hills in it, the HM I?m considering is dead flat.

Second and more importantly, can someone advice about hydration on longer runs in heat? How much fluid should I aim to get down while running (races is at 7am so a bit later than I?ve been running but a bit further south so hopefully not >25 degrees, its generally 24/25 when I?m out in the mornings right now) , and how it is best to do so without either throwing up or needing to do a Paula? Should I carry a bottle and sip constantly or stop a couple of times for longer drinks? Is a HM far enough I should take out some jelly beans or something as well? Thanks in advance for any advice!

bonkersLFDT20 · 06/01/2012 06:47

OK, completely self indulgent!

This is my bridesmaid dress. It's NOT those colurs though. The dress is mint and the sash is ivory (you can play around with the colours on the website). Oh and will look JUST like the model! I don't have a dodgy tan mark on my shoulders.....oh no.

Getting my hair and make-up done and everything. DH being a bit of an arse though. He really loathes big weddings. It's as much as I can do to get him to turn up! Git. Then I have to try and get him our of his tracksters. It's a trial I tell you.

MoshiMoshi · 06/01/2012 06:51

Morning troops! Tis the night before here in San Fran but I thought I'd check in to day I have a new iPhone (64 GB!) and am back online (well, via the phone). Unpacking so no time to read back or write other than to say I miss you all loads and am pleased I can share my move with you on FB. It's gorgeous weather here :-) Keep on keeping on!

stickyLFDTfingers · 06/01/2012 07:02

ah moshi Envy at your weather. It's great you're sounding so upbeat - and your photos are amazing! Hope you're out running. We're all missing you and your marvellous store of knowledge too!

stickyLFDTfingers · 06/01/2012 07:04

bonkers that is a seriously lovely dress! I can imagine that being tall you will be looking fabulous in it.

(why do I always first imagine some dreadful 80s Laura Ashley number when someone says bridesmaid's dress? I clearly have bad mental scarring)

LittleChiefRunnyCustard · 06/01/2012 07:59

Lovely dress Bonkers

Waves to Moshi

Shred a personal message to you - EAT!

Sonic that sound like a sensible plan. Will you knee be ok with the upped mileage ( Sorry, I don't know what you are having done to it).

Well Done on your post-baby run Peach - it took me >1 year to get back after each of my pregnancies due to SPD.

I know I have missed a few people but starting to get confused Confused. I don't think I will join you on FB or I will lose it completely.

Anyone used fitocracy.com? I got an invitation yesterday. It seems quite interesting - you earn points for doing any exercise and the more you do the higher your level and it offers challenges - like a game.

peachsmuggler · 06/01/2012 08:01

sticky and sonic, am not really experienced with long distances, so hopefully someone who is will come along and advise soon!

Moshi, glad the move went well and hope you are all settling in well! We miss you!

bonkers, that dress is lovely, I bet you'll look fab! Your DH sounds a bit like my DP. Give him a boot up the arse!

My turn for a lie in today but had to go wake DD1, as DP obviously didn't set alarm. He is so not a morning person and I can already hear DD1 in tears downstairs, probably as there is no milk for priidge due to fridge situation. Sigh. She is going to be spectacularly late and then he is groaning as today is swimming lesson day and it's a whole afternoon outbid the house, journey on train etc. I think he needs to go back to work Wink

speaking of which, sfx, has your DH had any luck job hunting?

Legs feel slightly stiff after yesterday's run, but other than that, am unscathed!

AlmaMartyr · 06/01/2012 08:17

Wow, I haven't posted for ages so need to catch up! I've been ill since before Christmas with a really nasty virus so haven't been running for ages Sad Getting VERY frustrated now, especially as I have lots of lovely running gear as presents that I haven't used yet. Still have a bit of a fever and a nasty cough though so not sure it's a good idea.

Bonkers - that dress is gorgeous :)

AngeChica · 06/01/2012 08:43

I like Fridays (my non work day) :). My new schedule only has one rest day & I am feeling pretty worn out at this point in the week! I need to run 70 mins while DS is at nursery this afternoon. All this talk of ultra running is Shock:).

Re running in heat - Neat isotonic drinks make me feel sick but I think they help replace salt from sweating in the heat so I would perhaps carry diluted in a bottle - or some Dioralyte dissolved in a bottle of water, I've heard people at running club say. My DH is a PE teacher & is quite good on the technical stuff, I'll ask him later sonic.

sticky now that I am running a bit further I definitely feel the exact moment during a run when I run out of carbohydrate energy - the cue is when I start to feel odd & shivery. This used to happen if I did long walks with my dad & we used to carry glucose tablets. So far I've used some dilute sugary drink, but as my long runs are getting longer I'm off to buy some gels and experiment with them.

I lived in Darlington (Co Durham not Aus!) til my folks moved to Suffolk & we did a lot of walking in the NY Moors and dales. Dad did the Lyke Wake a few times. His tactic on getting me and my bro to walk further was always to egg us on with the promise of a lemonade and a packet of crisps at "key milestone" pubs such as the Lion Inn. Also the Tan Hill Inn in the Dales, The Old Hill Inn at Ingleborough and the Kirkstone Pass Inn in the Lakes. Classic remote pubs, all.

That is a gorgeous dress bonkers. Your DH will surely be cheered when he sees you in it.

fishie my dog holds me back too, I only take him now if the schedule says jog 30 mins! :)

DH has had the idea of going to Cornwall at Easter hols. I will need to be doing some big runs there as it's just before the VLM though! I would love to go - it's a helluva drive from Northumberland!

DebiTheScot · 06/01/2012 09:07

Love the dress bonkers, I can't believe how many colours it comes in! I've just wasted a good 5 minutes trying it all sorts of combinations! Can't decide whether tangerine with tulipsash or buttercup with sailor is worst Grin

bonkersLFDT20 · 06/01/2012 09:21

Lush house Moshi. I think I could cope with the massive upheaval if it led me to a house with columns around the front door AND matching silver washer and dryer. Did you struggle to find front loading machines?

MorvernCallar · 06/01/2012 09:36

hello again everyone

my (planned) races are the haworth hobble in yorkshire and the clyde stride in scotland, plus the ldwa games 100 at the end of may. i'm hoping to do a few scottish hill races in between.

am very interested in the london-brighton - especially if you can still do it as an individual, it's always been a dream race of mine ...

debi - where are you? which is your local 100? (i'm hoping you'll say it's somewhere in scotland Smile)

pre-kids i did lots of long-distance cross-country type events, but found it really difficult to get back into training afterwards (DD2 is now 2.5) - but last october i did the round rotherham 50 miles (furthest i'd run for 5 years) and was outrageously ecstatic at the end - prancing about hugging strange sweaty men like a fool Wink

thanks for a lovely thread, am enjoying it lots ...
