sorry to interrupt
, but this is just to answer some of runningallday's questions from a few pages back ...
no, i don't run all of the long races, nowhere near. (wish i could, though!) usually there's navigation involved, which is a chance for a breather, and i'll walk up any serious hills (or anything resembling a slight incline). when i did the round rotherham last october i was really chuffed to only walk on the (few) hills and run the rest - slowly, admittedly, but it was running. pacing, i think, is everything - much better to run slowly, interspersed with some walking, and keep being able to run right to the end than to go tearing off and find you have to walk the last 15 miles (which can be deeply depressing).
my longest training runs nowadays are 2 to 2.5 hours - with some road and hill races thrown in. last year, before rotherham, i did an 18-mile hill race which took over 5 hours (aaaagh) - but at the end i knew i'd be okay for rotherham. knowing what hours out on your feet feels like is really important, so going for a long walk / run for the whole day is good training, i think.
i see you're lucky enough to have a place in the wye forest 50 - what a beautiful part of the country, should be lovely, with some lovely runners / walkers to keep you company too
.
sorry for the ramble, but hope that's in some way useful - there are some good endurance / ultra groups on facebook, which might be worth checking out? (oh, and i wear trail shoes, not studs or flats, for these races - need something comfortable with plenty of grip)
