Anyone want to join me? It means we should start 2012 being able to run 5k - now there's an incentive to stick with it.

Thought w4r2 was bloody hard. Discovered that if you start at dusk and.go down unlit lanes you have to run pretty fast to get back before the light fades so much that you can't see the puddles which are big enough to drown an elephant. As a consequence I ran further and faster which might explain why I found it hard!

You realise that w4 is about 3km and most of it (15/20 minutes) is running.

I also ran past one of my favourite houses in the village today. We have a list of houses we would buy if our lottery win coincides with the current occupiers wanting to sell. It's a huge water mill but I'd never seen inside it before. At night with the lights on and the curtains open and only doing a slow recovery walk I got to have a good nosy and its stunning inside - huge farm house kitchen, loads of book shelves etc... WANT, WANT WANT!

I do some house envy whilst running too! Less stalkery when not in a car.

ohbugrit · 19/12/2011 21:36

W4r2 done - tough, I was definitely pushing myself, but I did it. Niggly sore left shin afterwards so I'll need to watch that.

I've never been into visualisation but I found myself imagining DH and the DC at the finish line of a race and that kept me going :)

STILL snow and ice but the forecast is for milder weather now so hopefully I'll get back outdoors now.

Looks like it's just us 3 then? Hang on in there people, I'm determined not to waste the progress I've made so far so I don't plan to go anywhere until I'm done!

golemmings · 19/12/2011 23:28

I'm planning on seeing it through too. If anything untoward happens and I end up run over by a hoard of marauding rabbits and can't run then I'll still be here anyway keeping an eye on you two because I am a sad git with no real life

The best house-envy experience I had was paddling the Avon Descent race a couple of years ago which is in Warwickshire - 5 miles either side of Stratford-upon-Avon. I hadn't planned to do the race - dd was only 10 weeks old; I hadn't trained, I hadn't been in a boat for 3 months but a mate's crewmate dropped out so I agreed.

I spent the second half of the race house watching - palatial thatched cottages with stunning rear gardens - no fences or anything because water frontage is an attractive feature for owners and there's not usually a huge amount of traffic along the river. I've never seen houses like it! My partner, on the other hand, spent the second half of the race acknowledging that yes, it was a very nice house but would I like to paddle properly and reminding me we were in second place and the crew in third was gaining on us and I was doing really well - the typical kick-stroke of a coach. Works great on normal paddlers but not so well on somebody who uses it all too often on the folk they coach and their less experienced crew mates! We came second but Gari really did have to talk me in. Funnily enough he's not raced with me since either!

I did it!! Managed the full 20 minutes on W5R3. Am so delighted and utterly surprised! Off out tonight so probably some drunken ramblings later if you're lucky! Xmas Wink

ohbugrit · 20/12/2011 19:59

WELL DONE TIDY! That's a brilliant achievement, you should be very proud of yourself :)

musttidyupmusttidyup · 21/12/2011 10:05

Thank you!

golemmings · 21/12/2011 21:39

Well done tidy. That's brilliant.

I haven't run today. The excuses just get better and better. Todays plan was to go to bumps and babes, eat mince pies with a friend, run and go to the market to buy Christmas veg and dd's Christmas present.

It all got rather hijacked following a call at 6 this morning from the a&e department at my dad's local hospital to say he'd had a fall and they were about to transfer him to the regional neurology unit. He's ok but we only got back at 8 and I seem to have done nothing but feed DS since then. Now I am going to bed in the hopes that the world won't be quite so shit in the morning.

I will run tomorrow. I will really need it by then.

OP posts:
ohbugrit · 22/12/2011 09:06

go, so sorry to hear about your dad's fall I hope he makes a good and speedy recovery and that he's not too far from you. FWIW I think it does help to see running as a respite or escape, if you can. Otherwise it feels like an extra chore to add to your list.

I did w4r2 this morning and it wasn't as bad as I'd got myself worked up to imagining it to be. I went to a body blast class last night and thought running would be too much this morning but apart from a niggly shin I'm ok. We're going away tonight for Christmas so I've decided to stick to w4 runs until I get back, then I'll ramp it up to w5.

I'll be monitoring you lot from my phone though so keep running! :)

HamblesHandbag · 22/12/2011 13:39

er, hi, My name is Hamble and I didn't run for 12 days

multiple excuses reasons, but I realised that I was not feeling tired enough at night and took an opportunity to run again today. I repeated W3R3 and amazingly, it was fine; I totally expected to have regressed somewhat.

But look at you lot!! Lemmings, bugrit and tidy, you've done brilliantly sticking with it with all the stuff everyone has going on, WELL DONE! Smile

I'm hoping to have a go at W4R1 tomorrow.

musttidyupmusttidyup · 22/12/2011 18:54

Welcome back hamble! Hurrah!
Sorry about your dads fall golemmings. You've had a dreadful time of it. Hope 2012 brings you better things. Sad
W6R1 today and found it hard going. Don't know why, a boring route maybe, lots of people around. Glad I did it though especially as been way over my calories last few days.
Body blast sounds Interesting bugrit. What is it?

golemmings · 23/12/2011 21:43

Welcome back Hamble!!!! So glad you'd not fallen off the tread. So then there were four...

I've had a semi constructive day...

Visited dad - who is pretty much back to normal but has just enough bruising to elicit much sympathy but is still grounded for a while while they decide whether he'll need surgery
Got two children in their respective beds (a new achievement for ds who didn't stay in his bed during the evenings for the first 10 weeks of his life)
and done W4r3.
Bit slower than W4r2, but faster than w4r1 and a stonking negative split. Had I run the first half as well as I ran the first I'd've really kicked ass!

So just a Christmas cake to marzipan and ice (I know, its a bit late...), dh's presents to wrap (plus wrapping dd's present from granpa), a house to clean, and dd's present from us to buy.

and then christmas can start in the lemming burrow.

How's everybody else fixed for Christmas?

OP posts:
ohbugrit · 24/12/2011 08:32

Hi hamble :)

Good news about your dad, go. Hope he's not going to need surgery.

We're at MIL's house now and enjoying the break. DD (15 months) slept through last night!

I should do w4r3 today but the body blast class which didn't seem to affect me had actually left me in dreadful aching stiffness until now. Could barely get out of bed yesterday. It consisted of squats, lots and lots of squats, and some weights and some cardio. I could keep up with the fit people during the cardio bits! Also, as part of this pre-Christmas health thing the sports centre ran, I was measured and found to have lost 3" off my boobs and 4" off my waist. I've gained 2" on my thighs though ... that'll be the running!

Some last minute shopping to.do today and lots of veg to prep but I'll drag myself out later I think. What doesn't kill you etc Grin

Are the rest of you sorted?

musttidyupmusttidyup · 24/12/2011 21:58

Well hello the fiercesome foursome. W6R2 completed today and a much more satisfying run than the last....I think fewer longer runs are easier than the constant start and stop now. I was buggering knackered though, really red and sweaty and not at all attractive. These days I'm wearing a cap as a kind of disguise though.
Today whilst running I was overtaken by a 'proper' runner who was out of my line of sight in about 30 seconds. Hios legs were wayyyyyyy longer than mine to be fair. I did have a bit of speed envy.
I downloaded a new app which you can run alongside 'get Running' which gives the distance and maps the route. 'IMapMyRun' so now I know I am covering about 2.5 miles per run/walk so can start working on getting further and /or faster.
I know I can do it, achive the 5k, as i have pretty good staying power for this kind of thing but its the sticking with it that worries me. My brother runs about 6 miles 3 times a week. He says its because it means he can eat what he likes the rest of the time and he stays fit and trim. I really hope I can make it a lifestyle thing.
Anyhow, DS1, who is 4, will be up at some ungodly hour so I'd better go to bed.
Merry Christmas to you all. Have a lovely day. x

ohbugrit · 27/12/2011 09:45

Managed w4r3 on Christmas eve and w4r4 (!) this morning, both of them outdoors at last! Had a great couple of runs and am covering over 4.5km in 35 minutes now so I'm really pleased with that.

Hope you guys had a good Christmas - was Santa good to you? :)

musttidyupmusttidyup · 27/12/2011 19:01

Lovely Christmas ta.
Did W6R3 tOday which is 25 mins straight and it was bloody great. Lovely evening, streets quiet, had had a crazy day at home getting ready for ds2 s birthday tomorrow so was pleased to get out. Really enjoyable run. Hurrah!

ohbugrit · 30/12/2011 09:58

Ahem ... where are we all?

Lotsofchooks · 30/12/2011 10:24

Can anyone join in? Having NEVER run before I did W1R1 this morning - actually felt a little nauseous when I got back, but am really pleased I did it :)

ohbugrit · 30/12/2011 10:26

Of course you can, although there's a new starters thread here: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/big_slim_whatever_weight_loss_club/1370026-January-couch-to-5k-whos-with-me if you'd prefer :)

musttidyupmusttidyup · 30/12/2011 22:04

Oh hello bugrit I was starting to worry. Im here and all is well. Did W7R1 yesterday. DH, DCs and I went for a walk in the woods and I did a lap of 1 3/4 miles then half again to catch them up Grin was well chuffed and a bit show-offy. Still surprised that I can run for that long!
Hiya chooks welcome! You will be astounded how quickly you improve. Trust me, I have never run before 6 weeks ago and now am up to 4.5k and I am most definately not 'built for running' Grin

ohbugrit · 30/12/2011 22:59

Woo get you tidy! I did w4r5 today - shin splints plus weeks of treadmill running meant I had no idea of what routes to use at home so not rushing into w5. I used Endomondo to track it today but my GPS didn't work :( so I have to be satisfied by the fact that it was comparatively easy and I ran out of time for a cool down walk on a route which was way too long a month hack. All encouraging stuff!

Is your DH still umming and aahing? Mine is fairly keen but lacks motivation. Not much I can do to make him be arsed but keep evangelising. He did tell me he's really proud of me today :) and also apparently my thighs are more shapely. GET IN!

Anyway, well done you. W7 is proper stuff, you're a pro now!

ohbugrit · 30/12/2011 23:03

Also, today was my first run on home turf in daylight. I live somewhere small where everyone knows everyone else, and until now have been running after dark partly to avoid being seen. Today I realised that instead of worrying in case people saw me running, I was worrying in case they saw me doing a walking interval! Grin

musttidyupmusttidyup · 31/12/2011 21:23

I know what you mean - I always run a bit faster/more gracefully when I see people :-) DH has not mentioned it again, I haven't said anything, playing the long game.
Shin splints, ouch, what can you do? I've been so lucky, with the exception of a mild pulled muscle in w2 I've been fine.
My legs are looking toned but I still don't seem to be losing weight very quickly - maybe it'll kick in with more running/ less walking.

ohbugrit · 31/12/2011 21:46

Yeah, I was troubled with shin pain years ago when I had to run as part of the training undertaken by a team I was in. So I am being very careful just now - the pain is there but not too bad, but I know it could be really bad if I overdo it.

No weight loss here either Angry although that could be related to the ridiculous amount of food I consume day to day ... Blush

You not out partying? I'm staying in on the wine ... but will probably wilt and go to bed embarrassingly early!

ohbugrit · 01/01/2012 18:29

W5r1 done! :)
