Hi Jezabelle - first, well done on your 3 miles! Great starting point and to be honest, in a race with 3 miles under your belt, you would probably finish the 10k. May not be "fast" but you could probably do it. I would do 3 to 4 runs a week and add a 0.25 mile on at each run until you got to around 5 miles, it is not too huge a distance. Not sure if everyone would recommend this but that is how I would do it!

stickyLFDTfingers · 09/11/2011 20:41

a 10k plan

build up mileage slowly, don't worry if it feels too much. There's no shame in having a crafty walk for a minute or so and then start running again once you're ready. No need to follow a "plan", you can make up your own, but when I was starting out I liked having it all written down for me. Still do, actually!

RunningAllDay · 09/11/2011 20:49

Grr.... MN just ate my post. Suffice to say:

Great photo fanny - how sporty are you.

Sympathies re sexist workplaces - DH and I used to both work fT for same company, and he was penalised as he wasn't seen to be pulling his weight (he only worked 8 hr days and did half the school pickups etc). I tried to go PT (had had enough anyway) but they wouldn't accept less than 80% (i.e. 100% of job at 80% of pay with no chance of promotion, good appraisal or training). Gave up completely - cue DHs meteoric rise at work as now had a wifey to do the fetching and carrying. Hmm. Hope your SIL wins her battles monkey!

Enjoy the Garmin bonkers! Hope it makes up for bad evening! My DH is back from a month away tomorrow morning - he works month gone, month back - not sure which month is harder Grin

monkeyLFDTwench · 09/11/2011 20:50

DH finally home - was right about the pub. Was tempted to give his organic grilled salmon, mash and green beans to the dog, but decided to be the bigger person Smile.

Only joking with you drN, I get confuddled on fb too. Hell there are days I'm so flustered by everyone at home blathering on at me at the same time, I have trouble remembering who I am.

Sympathies on the stool sample - I had to hand one in for ds2. I double wrapped the sample pack in some M and S bags so the GP's receptionist knew we produced a better class of shit.

Wheelybug · 09/11/2011 20:51

Welcome jezabelle - Are you saying your 10K is in 2 and a bit weeks ? Hmmm... Can you try a 4 miler next week and a 5 the week after with some shorter runs in between ?

monkey/fanny - one of my top reasons for not having a 3rd is I am too scared to contemplate the bedtime routine with 3. I have to go it alone 5 nights a week at bedtime and often not done until 830/9 and the thought of adding a 3rd is just too frightening... Although I do think it must be lovely having 3....

DrNo - hope ds is better soon and that is appalling re your DH's boss's attitude. Can you get any work done from home at all ? Can't remember what you do other than owning a string of hotels Grin.

stickyLFDTfingers · 09/11/2011 20:53

fanny I am duly told off! I know, all to easy to write myself off as someone who'll never get fast, rather than actually getting my arse in gear and doing some proper speed work. So, next 4 weeks, that's what I'll do. And we'll see where it gets me! :)

DebiTheScot · 09/11/2011 20:55

fanny you'd better be right at the speed thing. My run tonight was just a wee 3.5 miler and after my first 8:50 mile I decided to push myself to do a fast mile. So I did and I couldn't have gone much faster and did it in 8:13. As I jogged along I figured out that to break 25 mins for 5k I need to run slightly faster than that and was thinking it'd be impossible and maybe my target is too hard. Then at 3 miles Mr Garmin said I'd just done 9:50 which depressed me even more as my average ended up being 9:06 which is slower than I normally do that distance.

orangeLFDThead · 09/11/2011 20:55

Wheely no I won't have time to repeat 7 miles and yes it worm meal 10 miles. I have not added it to the list yet I must.
Good thinking Rhet whenever we have given the boys bad news (two of dh's grandparents have died recently and two hamsters) sometimes we have had to wait a couple of days to find the perfect time, not before bed or school. Hope she takes it ok.
I bet you will have fun collecting that Drno. Last time dh's boss said something similar when one of the boys were ill. Dh pointed out to him that as I get paid more we loss more money if I take the time off. He boss didn't say much to that. But I do think if you work part time, I just work two days a week, it looks worse when you take time off compared to if you were there full time.
Hope you evening gets better bonkers
Hope everyone and dh's working near riots get home without problems.
I am so tired tonight just stuffed a bag of sensations poppadoms Grin they are so nice

bonkersLFDT20 · 09/11/2011 21:03

Jez (may I call you that?!). Well done. To go from nothing to 3 miles is a very good start.

You'll do the 10K on the 27th, I am sure of that. If you can do 3, you can do 4 right now I bet. What time did you do it in? How did you feel afterwards?

How many times can you run each week? I think you'll find that most of here have wild notions of training schedules and long term plans and then life gets in the way. But that's the great thing about running, it's pretty easy to fit in among other things.

I'd say that if you can confidently run 5 miles by race day the adrenalin will take you that extra mile at the end. You don't HAVE to have done the full distance on race day. Are you the sort of person who gets a buzz from crowds etc? What is the course like?

In your position, I would maybe slow your pace down and increase the mileage.

monkeyLFDTwench · 09/11/2011 21:03

wheely I feel the same about a fourth, though I always really wanted even numbers [control freak/OCD tendencies!]. Don't think we will though, mainly because I hate being pregnant and would have to have a cs this time.

Sorry, you did ask me yesterday where me n DH are going tomorrow. Red Hot Chilli Peppers at the O2. Cannot wait!

Jezabelle · 09/11/2011 21:04

Thanks to all replies! Thanks for posting link sticky, I know what you mean about it all written down, but the plan is based on 8 weeks and I have less than 3!! I think I need to seriously adapt! Fanny, think I'll roughly follow your "plan" and write down runs on my calendar so I know what I'm doing when. Tomorrow would be a rest day, but I might just do a 1.5 miler to keep up momentum iyswim.

Might let you all know how I'm getting on from time to time if that's ok to help with my motivation and focus!

orangeLFDThead · 09/11/2011 21:06

Welcome jezabelle, well done on doing 3 miles and sorry you had a bad few months. Once I got to 3 miles I choose one run to make longer and just added a mile on each week. I found that worked fine for me.

rhetorician · 09/11/2011 21:07

running MN ate my post too!

summary post: DD ok at nursery, horrible at bedtime, one wee accident, won't use loo there...DP and I on campaign to introduce her to as many toilets as possible (we sure know how to have fun!)

drNo sorry DS is still poorly

can't wait to do some speedwork, but know I need to work on endurance first - it's a bit dreary (which is why flying down those hills on Saturday was such fun)

jezabelle we are all secretly enjoying being called 'pros'. I'd do something like this - you've got just under 3 weeks, so 20 days. You've managed 3 miles and still have the strength to type :o

run every other day: 5k, 6k, 5k, 7k, 6k, 8k, 7k, 9k, 8k, 10k = 10 runs

OP posts:
stickyLFDTfingers · 09/11/2011 21:11

jezabelle check in all you like! I'm on here much too often (all my RL friends seems to have been busy the past couple of weeks, and I'm craving adult company!). BTW you don't have to start at the beginning of the plan, given you're on 3 miles already.

monkey I am very Envy. Now there's a band with a LFDT mentality - lord alone knows how many calories they burn in a gig!

Which reminds me, I was going to order that shred dvd. But perhaps I could watch RHCP videos and do what Anthony Kiedis does for the same effect...

fannyletsfookingdothisbanjo · 09/11/2011 21:14

Debi I think people get too caught up on "average" pace. Look at it that you managed a mile at 8.13. Next week do the same run, warm up then do the the mile again at the same pace. Cool down. Repeat weekly but you'll notice you find it easier and can go further so add on a bit more distance. Then when you do an interval run, aim to beat that pace but for a shorter distance. I trained in a similar way to do the HM in

Jezabelle · 09/11/2011 21:17

Hi Bonk (may I call you that?) Jez here! X post with you. I did my 3 miles in 30 minutes and felt ok afterwards. Recovery time not bad at all and have been really pleased with myself about it today! (Went early morning). My old hip injury is twinging slightly, but not too bad.

I can run up to 5 times a week until the run, (maybe usually more like 4). I'm definitely the sort to get a buzz from crowds. It's a town run, the course is fairly flat. My training has all been on the flat too. I see what you're saying about slowing my pace down and increasing milage. I know I have a tendency to give myself a hard time if I'm not doing something as well/fast as I think I should be able to. I would like to achieve a 10 minute mile in the run, but I guess with so little time left, maybe I have to come to terms with the fact that something has to give!

rhetorician · 09/11/2011 21:18

I've just realised that I've spent all day teaching the impressionable yoof wearing a belt that says 'fuckin criminal' on it in very large letters Blush. It's DP's and seemed like just the thing, given that all my trousers are at least a size too big since this year's running activities (still weigh a ton, mind you)

OP posts:
monkeyLFDTwench · 09/11/2011 21:18

sticky Flea is a marathon runner. They're all getting on a bit now. To be honest after reading Scar Tissue I'm amazed they're still with us!

fannyletsfookingdothisbanjo · 09/11/2011 21:21

jezabelle definitely stay on this thread, it's ace for advice and helping your motivation. I'd probably rest tomorrow if I were you, don't go too mad! Then your fresh on Friday to do 3.25 miles.

Wheelybug · 09/11/2011 21:23

ooh great monkey - a friend has been.... sounds fantastic ! As for the 'another child thing' I should add that I am more than grateful for what I have already - both successful pregnancies had their (very different difficult) issues so I will quit whilst I'm ahead and be happy for it.

orange - how have you felt after your 7 miler ? Am sure the incentive of the meal worm will help you round Hmm.

Wheelybug · 09/11/2011 21:25

LOL at belt rhet. Don't worry they probably couldn't read it Grin.

stickyLFDTfingers · 09/11/2011 21:27

rhet LOL! You rebel you!!

monkey it is weird how some people punish their bodies and live on and on, then others go so young. I wasn't a huge fan of Amy Winehouse's music, but did think it was so so sad she went so young. And Pete Docherty is still there, doing his thing.

DebiTheScot · 09/11/2011 21:31

Hilarious Rhet Grin

Jez sounds like you'll be able to do it. Maybe stick to 4 times a week in case increasing distance and number of runs injures your hip more. And don't forget 10k is 6.2 miles (not that it makes much difference but in case you're thinking 10m/m= 1hr and then would be gutted if you just missed out on the hr as that happened to me this time last year)

rhetorician · 09/11/2011 21:40

I was about to say that they are all over the age of consent, but actually there are a number of first years who aren't yet 18...

OP posts:
monkeyLFDTwench · 09/11/2011 21:47

Rhet that's really funny. I'm more likely to embarrass mysel the other way by wearing something utterly childish like a Power Rangers belt. See, I'm so used to boy stuff I don't even notice that sort of thing. Let's hope none of their mummies complain! Grin.
