orange well done on getting the 7 done. So long as you increase gradually, you will be able to do it no probs. And on an actual race day, it's all totally different anyway.

I did 5 miles this morning, doing 10 minutes easy, 10 minutes hard alternately. The first 10 minutes hard was OK - doing 9m/m pace, but could only get it down to 9.30m/m on the second. I'm not sure exactly what's stopping me - it's not like I'm totally out of breath, or hurting. I think it's psychological. Hmm.

Hope your DH just has a nice day in casuals and gets home early monkey. LOL at brolly and bowler - does he work in 1910?

Cheering myself up with pie and mash now. DP won't be home til gone 11pm, so decided I might have a nice lunch on my own (with the inestimable company of R4!)

WishIwasCherryMenlove · 09/11/2011 13:48

Thinking of your cousin too fanny.

I went into work today in the city and couldn't work out why there were so many police about. Oh yes, it's because of the student cuts protest ... Even better it ends with a rally outside my office and right by my tube stop! Oh joy. Now why didn't I pack my riot gear today??

Annoyingly I can't even sit and watch the protest from the window as I'm under a velux window. Just been debating our exit strategies. Monkey I hope your dh makes it home ok

sfxmum · 09/11/2011 13:52

thanks peach8 and Wheely*

fanny you are gorgeous, that is not a pity look from the old farts Grin love the running top

Wheelybug · 09/11/2011 13:55

oh dear monkey - DH still went in suited and booted. Hope he doesn't get egged (snigger).

Well done on the 7 miler Orange. If you're worried about 8, do you have time to do 7 miler again next week and then do 8 the following week. Sorry, ca't remember what you're building up to ? Is it the wierdy meal worm up norf 10 miler ?

rhetorician · 09/11/2011 14:11

haven't told DD about cat yet - it was first thing on her lips this morning though. Will tell her when she comes home - didn't want to send her off for a stressful day of trying to remember to go to the loo (quote this morning: "i want to do a wee in my own toilet!" when I was prodding her gently about using the loo at nursery) when she was upset about the cat.

DP is drifting around feeling sad (this cat was a banshee: she would claw and howl at the window/back door to be let in, all the time).

I am looking forward to my easy run: sticky i have the same thing - even with a HR monitor, I think I just don't know what hard running feels like and I am therefore too scared to do it

monkeyLFDTwench · 09/11/2011 14:48

cherry apparently the stoodents are to rally pretty much outside DH's office just about now. Where are you? He's just moved back to Old Broad St after a couple of years at the Gherkin, am glad he's moved from there as it was always rumoured to be a top terrorist target. He doesn't really have a bowler and brolly, but does stick out like a sore thumb as an office worker wearing jeans for the day. Should've gone in running gear!

Meant to ask which running club you go to? The Striders is nearest ms but they always look hard as fuck very hardy and scarily professional!

stickyLFDTfingers · 09/11/2011 15:23

wheely I'm glad it's you I found! Tis a bit of a worry that I'll message one of rhet's friends who i don't know and say "hello, I'm Sticky" and frighten the life out of them... I'd be banned pretty quick!

rhet what is it do you reckon? Am I misremembering or were you fairly sporty in your yoof?

Yikes must go get girls!

rhetorician · 09/11/2011 15:28

I was (hockey, and lots of it); I think I am scared of not being able to do it (this reminds me of DP's dad who wouldn't let his kids learn to swim - yes, you guessed it, in case they drowned!), and I don't like to feel discomfort. I genuinely think it's a real problem for me - I am sure I can run 9min/m if only I am prepared to want to puke. But I am not prepared to want to puke!

Mind over matter - flesh willing, spirit weak etc.

OP posts:
futurity · 09/11/2011 16:00

rhet again I find myself similar to you..I know I can go faster but I worry that I would either throw up or ...erm...explode in another way Blush so I never quite push myself and then look back after with a tiny bit of regret.

monkeyLFDTwench · 09/11/2011 19:00

futurity me too. I'm a wimp.

No run tonight, saving myself for a whole world of pain circuits tomorrow. Here's a question, why do I really really ache whenever (I mean after) I do lunges? I seem to have a real issue getting my right leg low to the ground.

Have just scoffed one of the pumpkin pasties the boys made at cookery club. It was lovely, with little toasted pumpkin seeds on the top. Lucky I'm not running tomorrow though or I'd be pebbledashing the course!

Am I missing anyone on facebook? - I'm friends with lots of you including AlexLFDTFerguson rhet, initials S.G. I think all friend requests should include our not very secret code (four letters, already mentioned), don't you? Smile

DrNortherner · 09/11/2011 19:09

monkey not sure if we are friends on Fb are we? My initials are DD. Apologies if we are, I get confused!

Lunges always hurt me like hell too.I take it as a good sign.

In shitty news, GP wants me to collect a stool sample from ds. Joy. The things us Mothers do hey? Dh and I have had a right barney because he is refusing to take tomorrow off work, even though I have already missed 1.5 days so far. Dh's boss helpfully suggested as I work part time sick kids are my responsibility, not dh's Hmm Twat.

Anyway, my Abbey Dash race pack has arrived, with a welcome letter from Nell McAndrew who will be running the race Not that I will be anywhere near her, I'll be eating her dust Grin

rhet you really need to join BMF, they get you running till you want to puke!

futurity · 09/11/2011 19:28

I think I have friend requested you Sticky ...at least I hope it is you as I sent a random message Smile

DrNortherner · 09/11/2011 19:30

monkey ignore me, we are FB friends! We could do with a crib list.....

rhetorician · 09/11/2011 19:36

DrNo you are probably right - there is a bootcamp military fitness type thing here which I might try and do next year - I think the next 3 months will be very much easy base building for me, and then I want to work on adding in speed work running til I puke (good, if offputting thread title?): so build endurance, then speed (well, relatively).

I hate bosses like your DH's - heard one of these on the radio recently saying that they'd think twice about employing a woman of child-bearing age 'because she'd be off every time the kids had chicken-pox' Shock; these guys don't seem to realise that fathers are parents too! They wouldn't employ women of post child bearing age for some equally spurious reason I'm sure, and neer seem to consider that the woman's job might be more important and/or better paid than the man's. Grrr.

OP posts:
bonkersLFDT20 · 09/11/2011 19:44

Cheer me up please. My DH is being an arse.
Just typed the rant and deleted it. So dull.

Oh I know....I'm getting a GARMIN! Guess from who (whom?)

monkeyLFDTwench · 09/11/2011 19:50

S'ok, DrN I knew we were friends on fb . My profile pic is two boys holding a teddy if anyone is wondering .

My SIL has just been made redundant after nearly 20 years at the same company. She's the only part-timer though - funny that. Her employer has tried to give her one week's notice, and no redundancy pay although they might be able to pay her for the last week cash in hand Hmm. What a shame for them her SIL is an ex-employment lawyer and used to dealing with scumboid, sexist, ungrateful employers negotiating redundancy packages.

monkeyLFDTwench · 09/11/2011 19:57

bonkers mine isn't even home! So much for being early Hmm. I strongly suspect he has decided to wait out the "riots" in a nearby pub ...... so I've had to put all three boys to bed, while doing dinner and listening to assorted whinges ....

DrNortherner · 09/11/2011 19:59

Oh Monkey you made me feel terrible now.....FWIW I struggle to remember which real folk on FB are on here

stickyLFDTfingers · 09/11/2011 20:13

DrNo don't envy the stool sampling eeurgh... bad enough doing the urine catching for UTIs (didn't help that when I had to do it, DD and I were in a German surgery and the Germans were very very po faced (that's a pun, po is German for bum in case you didn't know) and once we'd got into the loo and I was trying to catch her wee, we both dissolved into helpless giggles. I don't think Dr was awfully impressed Blush

monkey hope your SIL goes for it! I held out a bit last December, but wonder now (of course) if I could have brazened it out a bit more. What utter bastards, trying to give her pittance Angry

bonkers giving you a friendly back stroke. But at least you're getting a garmin

DrNo and rhet god, yes, I know Angry (so much anger here!) re bosses. I have had explained to me how academics don't actually really do work anyway, so I could expect DP to do everything, all the time. He was already doing every evening pick up. This wasn't enough apparently. Grrr grrr. And yes, I do suspect the redundancy process at my place was initiated because one woman had gone PT, I had applied to and another was going to have her second DS within 8 weeks. Angry Angry Angry

Off now to find you folks on FB...

fannyletsfookingdothisbanjo · 09/11/2011 20:23

Thanks everyone re my cousin, I have spoken to him today and he is fine, quite optimistic.

Well I think I am the only person not on Facebook then!

I am about to go enter my race for December - it looks like I am becoming a race a month overkill runner don't it?

wench I have palpitations if I am left alone to do the bedtime routine. DH is going away for 4 days, 4 FUCKING DAYS Shock in two weeks, I am dreading it as have no family whatsoever nearby so it's not like my mum can just pop in to help for an hour, although I can manage perfectly fine with my 3, it is nice to have another adult to console with over the tedious days of parenting! However, my best friend works as cabin crew for Virgin so I think I will be going to New York with her beginning of December for a couple of days sans children. Can't wait! Hope it comes off. I am too starting circuits again next week, work them biceps... Wink

rhet how did DD go re potty training today?

fannyletsfookingdothisbanjo · 09/11/2011 20:25

DrNo - hope DS is feeling better. Are you back in work? Was laughing to myself before, was thinking about when we both do Blackpool HM, I reckon we will have a bit of a friendly competition going on over who will finish first!

Jezabelle · 09/11/2011 20:30

Hey, sorry to gate crash, but I'm looking for advice from the pros! I entered a 10k ages ago which is on 27th November. The thing is, I haven't been training enough! I started running casually about 3 months back. I honestly couldn't run 0.5 miles then! I got really into it, then I entered the 10k. I've had a pretty pants month, (had to have a mamogram, granny died etc etc). All excuses, but basically, I haven't been training enough. I ran 3 miles this morning for the first time, (been running about 2.5 until now).

So, any advice? I really want to go ahead with the 10k, I'd feel like a failure if I didn't do it, and feel that I need to run all the way, would feel like I'd let myself down if I didn't.

So, where should I go from here? How far a run do I need to do before the 10k? How quickly would you build up distance? How many times a week should I run? I have a recurring injury in my hip so don't want to overdo it, but realise I'll have to push myself to achieve my goal. I work better in miles btw, but am sure I could manage the maths if advice is in km.

I will do whatever you say, I'm in your hands!

fannyletsfookingdothisbanjo · 09/11/2011 20:33

sfx thank you Blush Running top at least 3 years old! Probably stinks of stale sweat under the pits!

RIGHT I am going to tell you "plodders" off Wink Yes, it will be hard when you first attempt to get your speed up BUT do little and often, you will then notice after 2/3 sessions of doing that pace it get's easier. No pain, no gain. I messed my pace up by starting to train a friend, she couldn't run quicker than a 10m/m and after 1 month of going out with her, I was struggling to get my pace quicker again when I stopped training her. But I did, it took a bit of work that's all. So even if you just do 1 minute intervals at 9m/m with 90 sec recovery x 10 you will notice a difference in speed. Just do it ladies, you know you can!

DebiTheScot · 09/11/2011 20:34

monkey is that even legal? (your sil, not stalking people on fb)

Yeuch DrNo

I've just been for a run wearing a bright pink top, green fluorescent 'Fit and fun on the school run' age 5 jacket and a flashing armband. How cool am I? Grin

stickyLFDTfingers · 09/11/2011 20:35

Jezabelle first well done on getting the 3 miles under your belt! Running is a brilliant way to deal with difficult times in your life - I saw the thread re your granny. I hope it helps you too.

There are lots of training plans out there. Try the RW website. I used the Bupa ones, hang on I'll get a link and see where you'd be in it. RW do also have plans for shorter training periods, but iirc you have to be a subscriber to see them...
