I'm back! Found my number. It was by the toaster where it always was.

Summary results: 1:17:07
137/408 overall. 20th woman and 12th FV35.

Pre-race was all a bit stressy with DS1 being in a general grump and DS2 being a complete pain! I ended up taking him in his pjs and getting him dressed in the car park while DH took still grumpy DS1 off to find tea. I got to the race HQ and could not find DH so went off to find sneaky loo with DS2. Found DH with 20 mins before the race started so dumped DS2 with him and went down to the start (a 5 min jog). That was my warm up.

The last time I did this race we observed the minutes silence before the race started but this time it was more of a community affair with us all around the war memorial with the Scouts, Guides and church folk. We then had a mini service with readings, the Last Post and even a hymn which I doo be doo'ed along to. Luckily the weather was kind otherwise there would have been some chilled runners.

Anyway, off we went. It took me about a mile and 1/2 to get into my stride and then felt great for the first 3. I thought I might be going a bit too fast, but kept it up anyway. Once I got to 5 I still felt fine and had a short period of just coasting along at a decent pace. Then we hit a long, slow incline from 6.5 to about 8. It was on a very exposed farm track and seemed relentless. Lots of LFDT in my head. By mile 8 I felt fine again and knew I was going to get a decent time so on I went. Speeded up for a bit but crashed at about 9.6 miles where the end took us up a couple of hills into the finish.

Notable things:

  1. I overtook a young woman only for her to pass me at quite a pace. Then I passed her again when she slowed. Then she passed me again. This happened about 4 times - it was like she was doing intervals or something. Anyway, she stopped to drink at 5 miles and I never saw her again.

  2. I caught up with a chap who had the strangest running style, like a moon walking lollop. It really annoyed me so I tried to pass him. He tried to stick with me and I felt like telling him to F off, but luckily he couldn't keep up (mwaaaa haaaa).

  3. The last 3 miles or so I ran with a couple of men, with each of us competively overtaking but keeping with each other. It was good. I beat one, but one passed me right near the end.

We came home and then DH and I had arranged a baby sitter for DS2 so we could go to the pub for early dinner. 3 hours of glorious child free time. Perfect.

I'm really pleased with my time. I did the same race in 2007 (not long after I'd done the GNR) in 73 mins. I knew I wouldn't get that time because I haven't been training as much and I didn't have a demanding, extended BF, co-sleeping toddler in tow (bless him).

Thanks for reading if you've got this far! I will try and put a pic of me running on my profile. I won't keep it there for long because I like my anonimity in MN.

N4NNY · 13/11/2011 21:54

ooooo I want a Quooker tap wonder what my landlady would say to that request. :)

sfxmum · 13/11/2011 21:56

fanny that sounds like a hard time but I think you are right, once the 'base unit' is safe you can cope with anything and more besides, people often underestimate their ability to cope, it is quite a lesson to loose so much and see 'friends' disappear, what remains is very solid.

have any of you been to the hell that is a pool party for children?

rhetorician · 13/11/2011 21:57

great report bonkers and brilliant time, too. Well done!

rhetorician · 13/11/2011 22:00

thanks to you folks I have now added Quooker to my vocabulary (do you think I could use it in scrabble?)? debi 'tis the tools of my trade and at least compensates for all the teasing I got at school (have you swallowed a dictionary/stuck up etc etc).

N4NNy * Bonkers fab reports still trying to picture a moon lollop

about house renovations I just like to look at the brochures, I have 2 friends who seem experts at the stuff and do amazing whole house projects, I am happy to visit show room and go to house warming parties Blush

rhetorician · 13/11/2011 22:04

did one house renovation (this one, not quite complete) from 1930s house with one socket, no heating, and no hot water when we moved in. I wouldn't be keen to do it again. I liked the brochures, but not the mess, stress or builder management...

DebiTheScot · 13/11/2011 22:04

£700 for a tap!!!!! Shock

fannybanjo · 13/11/2011 22:06

Bloody hell bonks that's an awesome time! I had to look back at races to see if it was a 10k...!! It was a 10 miler wasn't it?! What was your average pace then? Around 7.50m/m? Hey, you're a dark horse you are! Great report too.

rhet I bet you never thought that you'd learn something new from a blonde chirpy scouser now did ya!? Quooker tap was the dogs bollocks. I tell ya, I've lived me. Grin

peachLFDTsmuggler · 13/11/2011 22:06

Fantastic time bonkers, and great report. I really admire your competative spirit. Awesome work lady!

sfx, pool party? Sounds a bit American, what does it involve?

fannybanjo · 13/11/2011 22:09

sfx you need harder stuff than wine after a pool party. They are the work of devil mothers.

sfxmum · 13/11/2011 22:10

peach I mean at the local leisure centre, with loads of dads, one pool assistant and people taking pictures, followed by cake in party room, all of a sudden soft play sounds civilised ,
dh is so in the doghouse on this one as he flat out refused to go

I only know one person in London with a pool at home and not for November as not indoors, so not that American

DebiTheScot · 13/11/2011 22:11

I wouldn't know where to start. We're still sticking our head in the sand about how bad our hallway, landing, stairs (2 sets) are as it seems too big a job.

Great report bonkers and great time too.

fannybanjo · 13/11/2011 22:12

Oh the one I went to we had to fucking go in - in swimming costumes! I was mightily pissed off and very nearly bought a Borat style one to cause a stir.

sfxmum · 13/11/2011 22:14

oh yes I was in the pool

rhetorician · 13/11/2011 22:15

quite like the look of the fancy pants tap; but how do you prevent pesky toddlers messing with it (DD very nifty with her ladder, keen on water, you get the picture)

ps 'ladder' is a step stool, but she will use anything that's to hand (mostly more dangerous than the effing stool which is the only reason it hasn't been smashed to bits and thrown in the grate)

pool party

fannybanjo · 13/11/2011 22:16

Oh the bastard sfx!! Here's another Wine from me and cut his testicles off with the blunt knife I'm sending you.

fannybanjo · 13/11/2011 22:20

Ah rhet your DD would need the grip of Mike Tyson and an IQ of 172 (so similar to you!) to get it on. It's a safety lock so kids can't mess with it. Used to cause such Envy from friends that did! "oh you want a cup of char?" "where's your kettle Fanny?" friend looking like this---> ConfusedEnvy

sfxmum · 13/11/2011 22:23
Grin he is actually a very nice young man

but I am never doing this again, dd will have to get super strong at swimming before another of these so I don't go on the pool

sfxmum · 13/11/2011 22:26

debi I am postponing doing the floors on the sitting room and hall (too grand a word) plus kitchen and bathroom just because I can't quite face having to organise quotes, builders, mess

monkeyLFDTwench · 13/11/2011 22:27

Just wanted to say hi and wave, no time tonight as am bloody knackered - started going through the posts and have only got up to midday today! Off to bed, will catch up tomorrow - night night.

sfxmum · 13/11/2011 22:28

actually I can do a lot of mess without organising it but still you know what I mean

bonkers really good time well done for some reason I kept thinking it was a 10k

rhetorician · 13/11/2011 22:34

fanny ah I see - well I assumed there'd be something like that otherwise they'd have had their arses sued right off by now

best go off to bed before DP gets up and leaves it - she slept half the night on the sofa last night, poor soul. I still have work to do...aargh!

OP posts:
stickyLFDTfingers · 13/11/2011 22:35

bonkers well done you, what a brilliant time! Thanks for the report (still trying to imagine the moon walking guy, sounds very odd Confused).

I also have learnt what a Quooker tap is (nothing to do with porridge on tap, which would have been quite cool). Our house is in the half way stage. If you sit in certain parts of it and only look in one direction, then it's OK. We have to be quite strict with our guests Wink

moshi that is a dream house. I do hope you have a wonderful one stateside to make up for it.

Sfx, god, yes, I know, I feel and have felt your pain. Have some more Wine, if your head is in any shape to cope with it. Never have a children's party anywhere that echoes, seems like a pretty basic rule.

Fanny you're a good egg.

Peach still sending you them whoosh vibes. Or maybe champagne cork popping out of bottle!

DebiTheScot · 13/11/2011 22:42

sfx my hall is about 50cm2 too Grin (I tried to do a proper squared sign but all it did was made everything huge!)
We had our wooden floors refurbed while we were on holiday in April. Getting it done while we were away made life so much easier and I only actually got one quote.
How can you possibly paint stairs (well the walls) while in the house? And do we do carpets before or after??
