sticky haha that's quite a compliment being a good egg! Houses are never fully completed though are they? Mine actually, feels like a shithole in comparison to what I've had but I'm learning how to find cheaper alternatives, making my 15 year old dated pine kitchen look lovely and homely and try and get great curtains made from cheap fabric. It's quite exciting really and far more thrilling in the end than throwing money at someone to do it for me. We laugh though cos my car only has one key and that barely works half the time. I sometimes sit outside trying to get it started with the kids moaning and wondering what the fuck happened as 4 years ago, I was driving a Range Rover Supercharged Sport! It is funny and just shows how you can't take good fortune for granted. As long as I can get my roots done I don't care about material things anymore. Could be on the bones of me arse but NEVER with bad hair!

sfxmum · 13/11/2011 22:54

oh yes debi you remind me we need to paint all the rooms too, we have been here for over 6yrs and is starting to show

peachLFDTsmuggler · 13/11/2011 23:14

Haven't ever owned a house/flat so not too sure about all this, though loving the idea of porridge on tap! Weirdly I only started eating porridge when I moved to London. When I lived in Scotland, I probably ate deep fried shit like everyone else...

sfx, that does sound hellish. I will make sure DD never gets invited to one. It's the equivalent of having to go into the ballpit with them. Wrong wrong wrong.

Hope your ears have stopped bleeding monkey!

Was still umming and ahhing about this race, but DD had a birthday party and one of the other mums, who?s really into her running, asked me if I was doing it, batted away all my excuses and said she?ll give me a lift there as she has to drive right past my house. So I guess I?m doing it. I ran 15km yest. eve, as I hadn?t done that distance before (usual Sunday loop is 11km). I keep the pace very easy as just wanted to get the confidence that I could cover the distance. Anyway, will see how I go on the day, but feeling ok about it- I made it home in 85min and really didn?t feel that knackered, plus the second half of my run is quite hilly (for anyone who knows Perth, I was running along the top of kings park, but dropped back to nearly river level 3 times) and the race I think is fairly flat.

Picking up everyone else?s point about small races though, this one I think has about 500 contestants, and is organised by the scary sounding WAMC (West Australia Marathoners Club) all of whom I imagine to be stupidly fit individuals. Have been assured there?s other ?normal people? who go, but am still a bit worried about abject humiliation... If I decide to bottle it there's always the Fremantle 1000 Santas Run on the same day - only 4km but you have to wear a santa outfit...

bonkersLFDT20 · 14/11/2011 07:06

Thanks everyone. Yes, it was 10 miles. The markers are MUCH further apart you know. Quite a few times I was wondering "is that a direction or a mile marker?" About half the time it was "huzzah, it's a mile marker", the other half was "shit, it's just a poxy arrow".

The moon lolloper put me in mind of the BFG for some reason.

Oh, major down side. My pelvic floor is really, really bad Sad. It's fine on training runs, but during the race it was not at all fine. And...lift....hold 2,3,4,5 and relax. That's what I'll be doing today and for ever.

Pool parties: Been to one when DS1 was about 8 or so. Bloody nightmare trying to keep an eye on other peoples kids, some of whom are very strong swimmers and others (like mine) not. The fear when the wave machine claxon goes off....."ROUND THE CHILDREN UP!!!!".
Mine is now getting to the age where he wants to have a disco party with GIRLS. OMG, a whole new era.

fannybanjo · 14/11/2011 07:46

Sonic my friend (also a huge runner) is moving to Perth in February. I'll have to pick your brains when you have a chance as she needs all the advice she can get. Smile

AngeChica · 14/11/2011 07:50

DH has family in Perth sonic and we have been over a couple of times. It must get bloody hot for you to run in Dec/Jan.

Love the race reports. Scarily impressive times!

I have been looking a for a club to join. I looked at one very "serious" one, with extortionate subs to match. Found another which looks much smaller and friendlier. They do a well known "Sands Race" in December - 5 miles on a local beach at low tide. Think joining will help with doing the other things that crop up in the training schedule as opposed to "just" running!

Well DH & DS happened to be in Asda yesterday at 11am and DS did NOT observe the silence but blew a massive loud raspberry right in the middle of it Blush.

Busy week ahead and driving 350 miles to Suffolk on Friday. Leaving DS for the 3rd time this year but a) my parents are ill and it gets a bit much for them b) we want to show willing on school attendance as DS is in a very good school which gets oversubscribed for reception next year.

SonicMiddleAge · 14/11/2011 09:05

Fanny - if its running advice there waaay better runners than I am in Perth! For other matters I'm happy to shove my unsolicited advice at people help...

ange I know - I think my summer running may be limited, which is a pity as it's going well right now. we're having quite a cool November so it's ok for now, but I can't run in 35degree heat...

monkeyLFDTwench · 14/11/2011 09:48

Oh dear Ange, sympathies with the raspberry! Ds1 is one of those children who just comes out with stuff. The other day they were presenting the man of the match trophies at their football club and they called out two names - both fairly unusual for first names but not that odd (think of something like McDonald and Parker) - ds1 waited for the applause to die down then said loudly "sure are some weird names on this team!" Criiiiiiiinge ......

Well done weekend runners! Am seriously considering never posting my times again .... bonkers I had to have physio for my non-existent stomach muscles afte having twins and then a nearly 10 lb single baby all within 17 months, and I got lots of p.f. advice. Basically the physio checked mine (cringe cringe again) and said it was fine but I would suffer as I got older if I didn't get exercising. So I did! The best p.f. exercises are the slow ones, where you hold for increasing amounts of time, rather than the fast ones most people do.

No sign of our little peachlet yet then? I hope you realise that we're expecting a full race labour report as and when it happens? No goody bag but then a baby is much nicer!

fanny sympathies on the financial stuff. You're clearly fucking hard a tough person though, and you've come through and out the other side stronger, right? We're comfortable financially, but I would say living where we do - and especially with the fact the boys go to a very "naice" school - there's a lot of conspicuous wealth. We're very non-flashy people, and I do sometimes feel a bit Hmm gently sliding my very dusty and dirty mum's taxi people carrier in amongst the RRs and the Bentleys in the school car park. But then I was brought up without money, and yet my parents are the most generous and loving parents/grandparents you could ever wish to meet. If my boys grew up anything like my dad, I'd be really proud.

Eardrums not too bad after Saturday night - can't remember if I said but we took DH's two nephews (20 and 23). They stayed overnight, and were still asleep when I took them a cuppa at 11 am! I looked at these two huge blokes (one is 6'4, the other 6'5) asleep in our spare room, and couldn't help wondering what the teenage years will be like with our three!

Wheelybug · 14/11/2011 09:55

Morning all !

Well done bonkers. Amazing time !! Great race report too. And yours N4NNY.

sfx dd1 had a swimming party this weekend but thankfully the invite came after we had invited people to lunch so although dd went, neither dh or I could go to go in the pool. Shame.

Lovely house moshi. Hope you find a tenant soon.

We are serial do-er uppers although we never mean to be. Everytime we move we say we're not buying something that needs work and then end up buying something that needs lots.

How are the preggers ones ? You know peach and rhet you'll have to post regularly so we don't start rumours.

Trying to get to grips with new iPad. Dh, after years of deliberation, finally bought a sound systemy Thingy he'd been wanted and it turned out you could control it from an iPad which was only a bit more than the actual controller so I convinced him it would be a good thing to do. The MN app is a bit odd though on here I think.

Right, half marathon training starts today. A shortish long run - 8 miles..... Just need to get on with it. Made mistake of coming home after drop off as had calls to make and now procrastinating !!

DrNortherner · 14/11/2011 10:10

fanny I'm so with you on the 'never have bad hair' Grin I'd feed my family rice and beans in order to get my roots done! But yes, your words are very wise, living in Harrogate I know a few folk who should heed your advice. Lots of poncey people around here who forget waht really matters.

moshi your house is indeed stunning. Beautiful. Am sure you will have something as equally pefrect in San Fran Smile

debi I have no idea what that sound/lighting system is either Grin I have sound and lights in my house, thst's all I need Grin

bonkers well done on your race. Great time and great report!

Getting excited for thread babies now, can't be long!

I had a rest day yesterday, drill sesh tonight. And, in other news, yu'll all be delighted to haer that yesterday ds did his first solid poo in 9 days!

rhetorician · 14/11/2011 10:55

DrNo poor DS; if it's any comfort I have to drop DP's wee sample into docs later on!

I live on a very nice, but very ordinary street in a fairly deprived part of Dublin - it suits me, and I am deeply deeply glad that we didn't end up going with the madness of the Celtic Tiger years - we were offered a mortgage double the size of the one we thought we could afford (which is big enough, thanks!) because we were both in secure jobs...6 years on, we have one income, not 2, and that income has been cut by a third. But we manage fine and actually have less debt now (just mortgage, no credit cards, no loans). There are a lot of people who did equity release on their houses to buy the latest BMW or whatever - now the BMWs are gone, but the millstone of the debt remains. People went totally crazy and it wasn't pretty. I am glad for the DDs that we won't have to fight this tide of consumerism quite so hard as we would have had to 5 years ago.

Just been out for my 5 miles - even though I don't really have time. But I was determined to get it done. Lovely morning too: I just want to run!!

OP posts:
peachLFDTsmuggler · 14/11/2011 11:00

Hooray for solid poos DrNo, yikes!!!

oh yes Ange, join the small and friendly one, it will still be hard core and get you where you need to be, but less intimidating.

Monkey am Shock at the size of your nephews!!!!

Wheely, I have total ipad envy Envy. Surely as someone who will be p have the night bf for the next god knows how many months/years, I neeeed an ipad!!!

Have to admit after Saturday's show I did get quite excited by prospect of impending labour, but now we are into Monday I am thinking, yes it would be easier if it happens after Friday as my sister will be here. Let us see. Said I would make cupcakes for Children in Need thing t DD's playgroup on Friday so inevitably as soon as I put them in the oven, my waters will go!!!

rhetorician · 14/11/2011 11:04

peach I'm with you on the ipad - it occurred to me (how could I have forgotten this?) that there'll be no reading in bed for months...nowt happening here, although DP keeps saying things like 'I think she'll be here next week'. Yikes! Hang on, I'm not ready...wait! Maybe I should buy one for DP as a present...

OP posts:
peachLFDTsmuggler · 14/11/2011 11:18

I think that's what they call "self gifting" Rhet!!! I thought the ipad 1 would come down massively in price when the ipad 2 came out but this doesn't seem to be the case. Maybe in the January sales... Tell DP she's got to cross her legs till mine comes, otherwise I'll get anxious!!! And that is my considered expert medical advice!!!! Wink

fannybanjo · 14/11/2011 11:56

Sonic She is not prepared at all for this move as her DH is in the Navy and a lot of it is done for them - she has just said to me that reality has hit and that she has 3 months to move herself, DH and four DC lock stock and barrel to the other side of the world. Schools are her main concern as they have no idea where her DH will be posted in Perth so really, she won't be able to consider many until she is there. I am gutted she is going but I have to be happy for her, she has to do this. I've told her to join a running club so when she moves, I will let you know what area she is in. Thank you!

monkey Schooling was my main worries when DH lost his business, DD was in a good prep school and we had to move her and she was so happy there but funnily, the prep school closed down not long after. So was a blessing really! I often wonder how she would have benefited more from us being more well off as she is a pretty average child and they tend to get overlooked in some state schools imo. I am not 100% happy with the school she is in at the moment either. However, I view it that a free decent education is something a large part of a the world does not have the honour or privilege to have and we have no idea how lucky we are in this country. It's up to us to encourage her and also help her educate herself about things a school can't even attempt to. Free health service and excellent schooling are the two things a lot of us take for granted. If we lived under the Taliban, my daughters wouldn't be allowed to go to hospital or be educated. That's a hard life. Not what I went through. Smile

DrNo Yes to the hair! However at the moment my roots are screaming at me for some TLC. Lucky you, Harrogate is beautiful, we bought our bed from there (although sold it to the people who bought our house... Hmm) - think it was called AndSoToBed? I can imagine some poncey twats there, I lived in Birkdale, Southport and it was poncetastic. Have to say, although I like nice things, I was at least a bit of a down to earth ponce! I do find though that the majority of people in those circles are extremely shallow. I never involved myself with money people, my friends were always pretty normal. There was one lady at the school who's father used to own Liverpool Football Club and Uncle owned Littlewoods. I will say she was the most down to earth of the lot of them.

Right back on to running... Just did a cracking 9.10 mile hill run (did 10 miles in all but forgot my Garmin so DH drove up to meet me with it! Now that's a running ponce innit?!) here it is. Am quite impressed with it as was quite an easy pace and idea was to start off on the flat quite easy then up the pace up the hill. The down hill was awful though, I got a terrible stitch. It is a similar hill to the Conwy HM (although Conwy one bit longer) Great training run for Sunday.

fannybanjo · 14/11/2011 12:00

Oh could someone when they get chance cut and paste the race list and add my one for the weekend on - my mouse won't let me cut and paste!! it's Conwy HM on 20/11/11. Thank you!

orangeLFDThead · 14/11/2011 12:23

Just had a quick catch up [head spinning as read as much]. Well done Moshi on being 8th woman thats amazing and well done bonkers, great report.
Moshi your house is beautiful.
I second everything fanny said. My ex had a very good job and we were very comfortable lots of holidays, but not quite moshi's standards. But I never saw my exh he was always working away. The stress of his job got too much for him he started drinking got very nasty and gambled away all our savings Shock. His job wanted to transfer him to Italy to we sold our house and moved in with my mum and dad for few months till we went to Italy. We put all the profits from house in savings then 3 weeks after ds2 born he ran off with someone else and emptied all the savings I never saw a penny of it. I was left with no house no job as I was a sahm no money and 16 month old and newborn. I got a council house (very lucky as it in a very nice area with nice school) and was on benefits for a bit whilst I got sorted. Although it was awful and scarey at first I started to realise I was so miserable before and I really learnt alot about myself and started to feel happy for the first time in years. My dh now has on ok job we just get by but we have a real relationship and he is a fantastic dad to the boys. Sometimes he gets a bit insecure and says do you wish I could give you want exh could. I can honestly say no, dh makes me more happy than ex and his good job and money ever did. Thats what matters. Sorry if a bit soppy.
Anyway a quick question. Was supposed to be doing hill work today but got boys off as they have been vomiting in the night. So will have to wait till dh gets home and go to the gym. To do hill work on treadmill what incline should I set it to for the hill parts?

monkeyLFDTwench · 14/11/2011 12:34

orange - that's utterly crap, am very Angry for you. But then I believe in what goes around comes around, and your ex truly has some bad karma coming his way. Whereas you, as you say, have turned the situation around. You know what they say, the best revenge is to be happy.

Just got some very sad news, one of the mums at school just had a 20 week scan last week, and the news wasn't good. I don't know all the details but a friend just told me she is no longer pregnant Sad. Times like these you realise what really matters in life - am gutted for her.

DrNortherner · 14/11/2011 12:34

fanny you are so going to piss on me in teh Blackpool half. You are on fire at the mo. That bed shop is still here and going strong. VERY poncey beds! Was it a sleigh bed by any chance?

Moshi Did I miss a post, 8th woman back?! Where and what race?!

Talking of poncy, someone I know has a home PA and is flying 4 of her pals off on a suprise break this week in her private jet.....
