New thread everyone!

Rest for me today - just six days to go and I've woken with a sore throat .....

OP posts:
sfxmum · 12/10/2011 14:57

paws I think your best bet is do an online search

rhet there is the reasonable side and there is the hidden middle of the night ambush Grin yep no psych needed

I am sorry to hear of illnesses I think it is right the children bring all the bugs round about now until Christmas, last year it was awful they were dropping like flies and the nativity plays were down to half the cast
teacher must develop a fantastic resistance to all of this

encyclogirl · 12/10/2011 15:26

Rhet that book looks so cool! We are a big GAA family, and my Dad was probably born with a hurley stuck to his hand. At nearly 80 he still goes out for a puck around with my ds. Actually I'm a Deise girl by birth, so I've no really loyality to the Rebel County! Plus that marathon's in June! Not that we get much heat but I couldn't risk it!

I kind of fancy next years Dublin city Paws Ooooh now there's a training goal.

Re Ironing. I haven't ironed in years. Dh does it all.

June2009 · 12/10/2011 15:26

Oh, rhet fanny my older brother died at 33yo of a heart attack and i spent the whole of last year thinking at the back of my mind that I was going to die that year, very emotional bday. It did and still does spur me on to keep healthy and keep on running!

he was a bit bigger than chubby and probably clinically obese, but you wouldn't have called him obese iyswim. He was a carpe diem type person and really enjoyed his life to the full. I see my nephew now and it just reminds me to be a responsible adult most of the -time-- :)

Hatwoman · 12/10/2011 15:43

rhet "probably quite good for pbs" I spluttered tea out at that. PBs for marathons? crikey that's serious. marathon a decade I reckon. at most.

ironing? I iron my jeans, my denim skirt and school uniform. that's it. shirts get taken to the nice people at the Post Office who do them for, oh I can't remember, 80 pence? a fiver? can't remember and don't care. it's money well spent

rhetorician · 12/10/2011 16:37

hat I wasn't talking about me, you understand. I've never run a marathon. Not convinced that I ever will, either.

DrNortherner · 12/10/2011 17:13

Hi guys.

Lots of good chat going on here. LOol at hat pegging it after being chased by cows. Yuo were brave. I'd have shit meself I think. On one of my off road routes I often encounter a family of ponies they freak me out, they have such BIG faces

Sorry to those of you who lost loved ones to heart attacks. I guess we all have different reasons for running. My Dad had his first heart attack at 41 and dies of a heart attack at 65 Sad

stickylittlefingers · 12/10/2011 17:27

darn you all, you've got me looking at the Dublin City marathon too. Hmm

It's an awfully long way (26 miles, not to Dublin. Though that seems an illogical statement)

But it would be less of a logistical issue than Berlin. I was (I confess) already looking at that one. Also a fast one. For those people who have the ability to move fast.

Though I've found a new friend (yay :)) who wants to do LSRs with me at the weekend, who is also looking to run a marathon next year. The augurs are pointing in a certain direction it seems...

(Just to show off my country upbringing) DrNo a pony is a little horse. If it's less than 14.2 hands, it's a pony. More, it's a horse.

It's so sad to think of all the people we have lost too soon. Remember to have a good evening, folks.

DrNortherner · 12/10/2011 17:50

Ah. Well I have no idea how many hands these are. All I know is they are big, and there are about 6 of them of varying sizes.

The only equine activity I have ever partaken in is riding a donkey on Redcar beach as a kid Grin

It seems though sticky that someone somewhere is telling you to do a marathon next year.......

Pawsnclaws · 12/10/2011 18:19

You won't be able to resist, sticky. Look into my eyes (not around the eyes) ......

I'm a bit nervous of horses (whilst thinking they are beautiful animals from a distance). DH thought it was hilarious that I was quite happy to take the risk of swimming with sharks and crocs in Australia, but horses? No thanks. Not when they do that big teeth lip curled back thing.

OP posts:
peachsmuggler · 12/10/2011 18:58

Sorry bout the illnesses Moshi and fanny. Moshi, as the others have said, best to have a serious think about this weekend, t'is one thing doing a 10k, but a marathon is super serious business. fanny, hope the bug goes soon. What a pisser about Saturday. Still, more time for ironing Wink. Seriously though, hope you manage to rearrange it soon.

Am off our to see a friend's gig. Am really too tired and worried it will be a late one, but haven't seen her in years so want to go. Going o drop DD off at pre-school at 9.15 tomorrow and then scarpering back to house in hope of long kip!!!

Just awful hearing about all these heart attacks, and at such young ages. Very sad. Am afraid it's cancer all the way in our family Sad

sfxmum · 12/10/2011 19:48

I need a bit of advice please I now know the course for the 22nd should I try to run it this Friday or Monday do you think?
They obviously put a bit of hill in it (London hills that is)
many thanks
although frankly I just want to know where the loos are

Pawsnclaws · 12/10/2011 19:58

Yes definitely would do that, sfx. I always prefer to know what I'm facing. What does the race pack say about loos? If you run the course this coming week you might be able to eyeball some public loos as well. I've got an app on my phone that gives you all the public/supermarket/cafe toilets within a few miles of your current location - always useful!

OP posts:
sfxmum · 12/10/2011 20:02

I know the public toilets as I regularly run around there although not on the side that they put the race on, my warm up will be getting from my side of Richmond Park to the start.
Seems to be some running on tarmac which I generally avoid due to cars
and btw the cut off for 10k is over 2hrs so maybe I might not come lastHmmGrin

sfxmum · 12/10/2011 20:02

and many thanks paws

futurity · 12/10/2011 20:05

paws I NEED that app! Whats it called?!

StrangewaysHereICome · 12/10/2011 20:06

sfx can't see any harm in having a trot round the route if you don't go mad and race it on your own!

moshi bummer about your cough, how frustration this close to the big day, but like everyone else says you have to be sensible and I would definitely see the doc. But I know how good runners are at ignoring advice Confused but you really should be checked out as you know.

fanny sorry to hear you are feeling rough too, hope you perk up soon.

So sad to here about the lost loved ones, I don't know why but just recently I feel very aware of my own mortality and advancing years (I'm not old but suddenly the years seem to be passing a bit quick for my liking!). I suppose part of me worries about DH riding his bike as there have been two cycling fatalities near here in the last 12 months and part of me worries about my parents (my dad is particularly maudling about death!) Still this is why I want to live life for today .... on that note I am still so tempted to do a marathon next year just to see if I can do it again, 2013 just seems too far away.

Anyway on a more cheery note I feel quite virtuous today. I did 30 mins kettlebelling last night (in an attempt to tighten the flabby bits my three dc have left me with Wink) and then I ran 5 miles to a baby group today. Not so long ago I would have been horrified walking into a group sweating like a pig and resembling a beetroot! I was planning to cool down first but I was late so sat dripping for a while, but it felt brilliant! So DS had a nap on the way and a nice play and I got the bus home. I think I will do it again it was a good route and nice to run somewhere for a reason rather than round in a circle.

I'm rambling now.... on the subject of ironing, I don't do any Shock. I shake and fold and DH does his own shirts - I am a slattern and admit it, I blame my mother, she doesn't iron either Grin.

Oh and fairy I would love to park run but Leamington is too far out for me. I am tempted to do the Two Castles as I've heard it's a good one.

Wheelybug · 12/10/2011 20:06

What's the route sfx. I'd do it definitely.

Sorry about illnesses moshi and fanny. Bad timing all round. Hope recoveries are swift.

Sorry to hear about all the bad health/ early deaths of loved ones on this thread. Very sad.

I'm an ironing slattern. DH's shirts get sent out and then only anythjng which is just too creased.

Hoping to do 10 miles tomorrow but pmt and a bit of a funny throat may get in the way but fingers crossed not !

Pawsnclaws · 12/10/2011 20:33

The app is called Toilet Finder and it's free!

I'd like to pretend it's for the benefit of toilet training toddlers, but it's all for me me me!

OP posts:
sfxmum · 12/10/2011 20:34

Wheely it starts at Broomfield Hill car park, to Kingston, Ham up to Near Roehampton and back down to Pen Ponds

Paws the council here has agreements with pubs and coffee shops and they works as of public toilets, they are signed posted, although I guess some of the poshest places avoid the masses

sfxmum · 12/10/2011 20:37

on the freak side I walked around most of the day with something on the sole of my boot, on the inside, I was very busy and the boots are long so I never quite got to sort it out until I came home and took shoes off, now I have a swelling there Shock a big ball

StrangewaysHereICome · 12/10/2011 20:47

eeek, stick it in ice sfx

Wheelybug · 12/10/2011 21:11

Oh eek ! about foot sfx - yes ice it... what was it ? Just had a look at the Human race website to see the route (mainly because I didn'tknow which car park that was). It looks a bit of an odd route - not circuitous (orhave I misread) so hard particularly to go and practise but then you could do most of it and just go back to the Broomfield hill carpark (walking up that terrible terrible hill) ?

Is the pub/cafe toilet thing in Kingston ? I never knew that !?

Well done on the run to toddler group Strangeways, that's hardcore !!

sfxmum · 12/10/2011 21:26

Wheely I hate that hill I have never been able to run all the way up it, I hope not to chicken out and do the 5k instead
the loo scheme has sticker on the door of the establishments which are part of it, I mainly know the ones over my way, not sure about Kingston.
btw it was a random bit of doll clothing which stuck to my sock, that is how dizzy I was this morning
icing it now

stickylittlefingers · 12/10/2011 21:36

rhet just having a look at the course in Dublin. I think there's a typo in your post of 14:37 - you mean it's a good course for pubs...

Paws that is an excellent app, I'm going to get DP to download that for me the DDs

strangeways that's impressive! Do you know what extra muscles you exercise, there must be a bonus factor?

sfx that sounds very uncomfortable! Hope it goes away as quickly as it came...

Pawsnclaws · 12/10/2011 21:41

sfx my hill "technique" (that makes it sound grander than it is) - I do a sort of hobble keeping my feet close to the ground, light as I can but with arms moving a bit more. I think as long as you keep moving forward that's all that matters.
