New thread everyone!

Rest for me today - just six days to go and I've woken with a sore throat .....

OP posts:
DrNortherner · 09/10/2011 19:01

wishiwas don't be hard on yourself! You ran 10k! The majority of people in the UK can not run a mile, let alone 6. Your time and endurance will improve over time, and remember, you lapped everyone sitting at home on the couch Smile Give yourself a pat on the back, no need to be dissapointed.

Sorry about the kettle incident, that sucks.

DebiTheScot · 09/10/2011 19:04

Well done fururity on a great pb.

Great time from you too June although the race sounds a bit odd! The start of the 10k I did last week was weird too but not as weird as yours. And that was a very peculiar goody bag!

runningallday was that your first hm? What a brilliant time, we were at Eden project in the summer and it is very hilly round there so I'm very impressed. And your goody bag is amazing. Great that they let spectators in free as it's very expensive to get in there. I did a cycling race that started in a zoo last month and spectators had to pay to get in which I thought was a bit off.

Cherry don't be hard on yourself. You did miles better than all the people who sat on their sofas all day Grin. It must be hard having a super sporty dh though. I'm glad my dh does nothing more than play football as he would be a faster runner than me.

DebiTheScot · 09/10/2011 19:05

DrNo great minds again!

Have to go and rescue boys out of bath but need to come back later and tell you my fanny boots story.

RunningAllDay · 09/10/2011 19:07

Well done WishIwas - you did fine, and just getting out there is half the battle! You DH does sound a bit of a depressing sort to be married to!! But well done him, too. And so sorry you are feeling glum and had such problems with your PILs...
If its any consolation, I also walked plenty (every hill at the end), and this time last year I couldn't imagine completing any half-marathons. Right now, I can't imagine a marathon, but I am sure good training will do the job. I'm sure you can to - don't feel rubbish. Its a really hard slog trying to fulfill one's potential!!! I feel like I am horribly patronising, and I am in no position to be, but just want to send you hugs. Hope the Wine helps, and don't give up. x

DebiTheScot · 09/10/2011 19:14

babysitter just appeared at door. Had forgotten me and dh are going out!

RunningAllDay · 09/10/2011 19:14

xpost - thanks Debi and DrNo, no, my second HM - first was in May when I managed 1:57. Am now all set for Reading half-marathon (April) which must be FLAT FLAT FLAT, then yes, I want to do my first marathon although Eden might be a baptism of fire!

sfxmum · 09/10/2011 19:21

Well done futurity fantastic PB

June good result along with the freaky weirdness Grin

runningallday well done sounds like a good time to me

Cherry if it is any consolation I am more than likely to do worst in a couple of weeks, I was discussing this with dh and wondering if I should pull out and work harder for a later date, but dd said 'mum it is not important if you come last it is more important to take part' oh well then

I am sure you will do better next day, don't be too hard on yourself

sfxmum · 09/10/2011 19:22

Shock at the setting fire to the kitchen, was everyone all right?

futurity · 09/10/2011 19:27

So race report. Got there nice and early and found perfect parking by the finish. Then had LONG wait until the start but did lots of people watching :) Lots of good costumes for the fun run that started before us...the kids in particular looked amazing...various fairy outfits and a Nintendo Mario. Had to suffer listening to the OH SO JOLLY warm up DJ..not what you need at 9am on a Sunday morning!

Saw lots of super hard looking runners on the way to the start line...one chap running bare feet and with no top on (mild swooning) ..one woman looked like Lara Croft...just an amazing figure...all hard runners had Ironman tattoos on their legs.

I decided to start just behind the 2 hr 15 min marker and, despite the high turnout of runners, it wasn't too bad really congestion wise. Didn't have to do THAT much darting around people and was able to get going on my ideal pace very quickly. It felt like I was running SO slowly though...I put that down to the fact that last week I did a 10K which was faster but I was well behaved and restrained myself and it paid off as I kept to the same pace mostly all the way round (apart from the end few miles but at least I didn't stop like last time!)

The route was BORING (but flat)...through housing estates and a few parks which was prettier. Saying that though there was support the whole way round with lots of kids doing high fives and a lovely old couple who'd set out there own drinks table with squash :) The official drinks tables were FAB with bottles with sports tops...really well done (compared to last week...grumble grumble). The weather and wind were fine and I coped really well with no aching legs at all (all those runs to Cambridge paid off).

The end was crazy...got over the line and they are taking the chip off..then handing you medal...then a bag...then "what t-shirt do you want" etc etc...brain was spinning! Bag contents report: Mens Running magazine (!), various leaflets, drink, gel, t-shirt seems ok and medal nice and shiny.

Met up with friends and thats when the not so nice things happened! My tummy was feeling rubbish (like it always does at the end of a run) so I head to the toilet...I was feeling shivery but had a light running jacket on and thought that would be enough..thats a lessoned learnt!

Anyway, did lots of errr...well..number 2 's Blush and thought that was it. Met up with others who were scoffing donuts but I couldn't face anything. Got driven home to friends house and had to run in as tummy was off again. I then realised that I was feeling sick but I thought surely I can't be as I haven't eaten (apart from 2 bites of banana)...WRONG...that came up pronto so I wrapped a towel around me and then friends got me a fleece and I started to feel alot better. Apparently I had gone VERY white with blue lips..must have been some sort of shock? Got taken home and had a bath immediately and have finally had some food and feel alright...SOOOO tired though! Not sure if all of the above was because I have a slight cold and felt the change in temperature too much after I stopped and didn't put a warm top on (slaps head).

Need to sort out my rubbish bottom and tummy generally...I took loads of jelly beans with me but can't face them when running faster than normal training run..they make me get cramp in my tummy...only had about 5 so can't imagine that helped my general situation. My Dad says maybe I should swap to cycling (he is bias)..I scoffed at that idea!..he then suggested that I might need some sort of isotonic drink on the way round...do you think my tummy could handle that??

Anyway...waffling on!! Am signing up to Cambridge Half on Wednesday when it opens. Really don't think I am ready for a marathon yet...need to make sure I can do a half without feeling dodgy first!

Saying all this...really pleased with my time! 5 mins 38 seconds off my previous PB (have looked it up and checked!). SMASHED!

futurity · 09/10/2011 19:33

blimey WishIwas what a day for you! Well done on COMPLETING a 10K!!! but sorry about the kitchen :(

June - what a random race and random goody bag! Loved reading your report :)

runningallday i want your goody bag and your location! Eden Project is lovely!

RunningAllDay · 09/10/2011 19:38

Well done you on smashing your PB. What a good feeling - and with a cold too. Sorry about the ropey digestive tract though... at least you made it all the way round before emptying!!

WishIwasCherryMenlove · 09/10/2011 19:40

Northener, Running, SFX and all, thanks, I think I just need to get over myself!

SFX your DD sounds really sweet, I should remember that and teach DS o say it too!

No injuries following kitchen fire, just our worksurface/gas hob/kettle! The kettle is a write off, but the PILs have bought us a new one. Only cosmetic damage at the end of the day. It freaks me out a bit as DS was obviously in the house and it could have been a lot worse. Plus it made me realise I really love my house a lot as it's the first house I've ever owned. I think I may be thinking of my house as a second DC ...

The Wineis helping a bit. Have sent the errant PILs and DP off to get thai takeaway, yum yum.

WishIwasCherryMenlove · 09/10/2011 19:42

futurity hope you are feeling better now. I had a lucozade sport before the race today as my tummy was all over the place, and I think it sorted me out (just could have done with another one half way round!)

backwardpossom · 09/10/2011 20:24

Wheely absolutely go to your dd's parents' evening in your running gear. I could tell you some stories about parents' evenings!

Themasterandmargaritas · 09/10/2011 20:25

Cherry I agree with the others, you have done 10k more than most other people could ever manage. We all have our not-quite-as-good-as-we-hoped-for races.

Iwish, great run but sorry about the PILS.

Futurity, I too get the tummy cramps and wobbly feeling. I tried a gel on the way round today and thought I would throw up. I took a post run recovery drink and felt a bit better only to go wobbly again about 4pm. I think the trick is to eat as soon as possible after you finish, something small and chocolately, then lots of small things and often, even though you really don't feel like eating. I also find those glucose tablets on the way round help rather than jelly beans.

muffinchops · 09/10/2011 20:42

Wow - I have been lurking on this thread for ages marvelling at you lot. What a great and inspirational bunch you are. Huge respect from me.

This thread is so fast moving, and, as a bit of a newbie I haven't wanted to gatecrash but I do have a message for WishIwas because I did the Herts 10k today too (my first) and I just wanted to say please don't beat yourself up. You did it!!

I was lucky because my (also fitter) husband agreed to run with me and really helped with my pace and kept encouraging me up that hill. Without him, I may have been tempted to slow down/walk. I managed 1hour 8 mins (having thought I would be more like 1.5 hrs) and it was a real psychological battle post 6k.

I feel lucky that I had a 'good day' but lordy have I had some bad runs trying to train and it could so easily have been today. Anyway, WishIwas it wasn't a bad run you did, it was a bloody good run and I think you should be pleased with yourself. If it's any consolation, I did my first race for life in the summer and I was almost sobbing round the course as I was having pelvic floor issues (sorry TMI) and ended up messing up my time and felt rubbish about it.

Why don't we have a pact to do 60 or under next year? Any advice from you pros about what to do training-wise next would be much appreciated.

Chill out now and pat yourself on the back that you did it. I applaud you.

Congrats to the rest of you guys who have been having some great races.

peachsmuggler · 09/10/2011 20:45

Great runs today Rhet, and Sticky!

Wow racers, you all did brilliantly, well done!

June, fantastic time and great race report! Loving your random goodie bag!

Futurity, hurrah for a PB, you are having a great streak just now. Sorry about the tummy issues after. Remember that you had the cold this week so weren't 100% and am sure being cold and wet afterwards didn't help. Not sure about the isotonic drinks, they don't do my tummy any favours, but worth experimenting on training runs.

Running, that sounds like a great half, despite not being the easiest course! What a great idea to give everyone entrance to the project! Am very impressed you managed to trail round with the DCs, I would have been found slumped on a bench somewhere am sure! Was a bit Shock at your first couple of miles but then read about the downhill, so all makes sense, well done!

Aww cherry, you did really well love, don't be so hard on yourself. The first two 10ks I did took me 1 hour and 12 mins and I felt like I was killing myself, but I did them and that's the point. Sorry bout the fire, am sure that is not helping your positive feelings about today. Glad you are having wine and takeaway. I would be scunnered too, with a speedy DP like that!!!

Now, where's that paws...

peachsmuggler · 09/10/2011 20:56

Meant to say also, June, loved you all scarpering for the start of the race Grin. S&V crisps. Inspired.

sfx, your DD is, of course, 10% correct!

Love the idea of the new thread title, though a little worried that prospective newbies might think we are actually a bunch of air punching, motivational talk attending, nutjobs!!!! Grin

Had all you can eat curry lunch today and still feeling full and uncomfortable. Think I forgot that my stomach has been squished to Minogue proportions. Bleurrggghhh

sfxmum · 09/10/2011 21:00

peach what does she know? she is only 6 and blurting out what I tell her Grin

sfxmum · 09/10/2011 21:02

well done Muffin and welcome to the fold

peachsmuggler · 09/10/2011 21:09

Err that would 100% correct Sfx!

Well done on your 10k Muffin! Have you got any more races booked?

rhetorician · 09/10/2011 21:10

well done to all our racers (high fives all round! to go with those mantras...), and to peach on her efforts at the buffet (I have just wantonly and brazenly eaten delicious Stilton in full sight of DP, heartless cow that I am).

muffin welcome and well done. We are all completely nuts on here - but very nice and quite funny (ha ha as well as peculiar).

I am dying to get out for my 5 miler in the morning (see what I mean?); I worry that I spend more time thinking about running than I do about work. Do you all sit in interminable meetings day-dreaming about the running you could be doing?

StrangewaysHereICome · 09/10/2011 21:11

futurity I get the runners trots quite badly, so badly that I nearly gave up running. And I have to admit that I have pooed in public Blush. I am better if I run in the morning after, er, having a good clear out. If I race further than 10 k I always take an Immodium beforehand. I only do this for races and I have completed two HMs and one marathon without incident. Hope you are feeling better now, and well done on your PB Grin

Well done too wishiwas scary about your kitchen though. My PIL deep badgering about babysitting and tbh I just couldn't trust them, not least because dd2 is allergic to peanuts and they just wouldn't have a clue. Hope you are having a chance to relax now.

As for me I have not been a happy bunny today and DH has been in the doghouse! No running as my planned 8 miler went by the wayside. Having promised to take the girls swimming he decided I should take them and he was meant to get ready to ride his bike by lunchtime. He didn't go until 3pm. So I took all dc shopping in a huff. By the time I got back he was still flapping about, not even showered, so I did tea and bedtime and the moment passed. I do get frustrated sometimes. He does work hard and deserves to the things he likes, but then so do I. He takes forever to get ready, adjusting clothes, filling drinks, pumping tyres!! Anyway I'll do it tomorrow with DS. I'll do the school run and go. I have found another local 10k next weekend which is an off road killer. I am very tempted but as I am helping out at a nearly new sale next Saturday, I wonder if DH having all three dc two days on the trot might be pushing my luck!!

Sorry to moan!

StrangewaysHereICome · 09/10/2011 21:16

Ooh welcome muffin and well done on your race Grin

ibbydibby · 09/10/2011 21:17

Well done June, Futurity, Running, Cherry and Muffin

June I loved your race report, but was a bit confused when I first read that the countdown ended with "HORN", thought that someone actually shouted that. Then twigged. Blush

Futurity, well done, sounds like you were a bit hypoglycaemic maybe? (Disclaimer: am not medical in the slightest). I am not a fan of gels, but do take one or 2 with me on runs of 10 miles or more (though really need water to force them down) or else dextrose? glucose? tablets? (Lucozade do some). Maybe something to experiment with when you are out running, once you have recovered. As others have said, having a cold probably didn't help. And it was chilly and wet in East Anglia. Hope you are ok now.

Running sounds like a great course, if a bit difficult.

Cherry think it is quite usual to beat yourself up after a race, if you haven't done the time you hoped for. Now (or tomorrow, or Tuesday) is perhaps the time to find something else in a few weeks/months that you can book yourself in for, to give yourself something else to aim for? Well done to your DP (Grrr). Sorry about your kettle, did that mean you couldn't have a post race cup of tea?

Muffin welcome, and well done!

wheely, think it is ok to go in running kit. Have turned up in many places "ready to go".

Well done to anyone else running today. I went on a little exploratory nearly 2 mile run late afternoon today, calf muscle felt ok fingers crossed, though remainder of legs felt knackered and creaky. Hoping to go training with running club tomorrow.
