Morning all. Just a quickie, went to a work BBQ last night and met a guy (husband of a woman at work) who usd to run for Gt Britain and train with Steve Cram. He no longer runs (is quite overweight) but in his day he travelled the world and did London Marathon in 2.20 and GNR in 50 mins. Wow!

LittleChiefRunnyCustard · 05/09/2011 07:49

Still not much running here but i am starting to get itchy feet - I think i will enter another race soon - maybe a 10 mile (my favourite race distance) in November.

I would love a garmin but I just can't justify the expense - maybe for my birthday (just in time for the race Grin)

I really like my new shoes but they have an odd outsole - there is only rubber on the areas with the hardest wear. I tend to wear quite heavily on the outside of my forefoot and there is no rubber there, only midsole. I think i will keep them for treadmill runs (which i tend to do alot of in the winter) as I always feel a bit guilty wearing my mucky outdoor running shoes in the gym. So... more new shoes required! Going to go for Nike lunareclipse which I think are the replacement for my usual which have been discontinued. I can still get some of the old style but I don't like the colours [shallow emoticon].

Rhet my DD was 2.5 when DS was born and there was a definite deterioration in her behaviour when I was pregnant. I am sure it got better once he was born though.

I will be spending today at home (other than school run) watching my DS try to do a poo in the potty. To think I spent 5 years at uni to do this!

orangehead · 05/09/2011 08:49

Sorry possum you didnt have a good race, even though I am envious of the time Smile.
Sonds like lots of good runnig going on.
I am going to try and do some intervals round the park whilst the kids play today. I will try not t get jumped on by another dog.

robino · 05/09/2011 09:17

I apologise now if this turns into my usual post and run (!) style but I've just had a real boost to my running esteem and thought you'd appreciate it. DDs 1 and 2 (4.5 and 3.3) are playing camping. They keep dashing through to the kitchen saying "I'm just going off for a quick run because I'm a mummy"! It's so nice to think that they see me as something other than just a mummy and that I'm hopefully setting a good example.

In other news, I was supposed to be doing a 10k next Sunday with a friend but think I'm going to have to pull out. I haven't been getting out much and haven't been any further than just over 4 miles.

I hope to start posting a little bit more next week- DD1 starts reception tomorrow and DD2 starts pre-school the week after. So I'll have 3 hours a day with just one child! Just need to figure out if I can fit in some running with her around (not many childcare options available)

Wheelybug · 05/09/2011 10:00

Sorry your run didn't go according to plan possum..onwards and upwards ?

Well done on the park runs ibby and sticky - something I might try once dd1 moves up a swimming group (currently 930 on a saturday morning).

Hope all the injuries and illnesses are getting better.

Did a gym session saturday morning bike/cross trainer/row which was all fine and then walked round central london yesterday and then did a shortish bikeride. Ankle seems to have held up and got a bit better. Can even balance on that foot nowand I jogged up the garden yesterday !!. So, have decided not to go to gp as its obviously on the mend. Will try a couple of KM on the treadmill if I can get dd2 into the creche this week.

Finished 'Born to Run' last night - what an amazing book - its hard to believe its true the way those guys run ! And yes, Chewy (are you custard now ?) - I do want a pair of barefoot runners now Grin.

Last day of hols here and need to go and book dd2 into the creche for the term and have managed to hold out until today for the holiday McDonalds trip. What a joy.

encyclogirl · 05/09/2011 10:20

Morning all, I haven't a hope of catching up with you all. Just a few for now...

Moshi that's the stupidest idea I ever heard. What the hell was she thinking? 61 MILES? Wow.
Rhet I hope you get the situation with that awful little boy sorted soon. Horrible isn't it? Wow your dp transferred her tax allowance over to you? In this country that's a serious deal! I gave mine to dh and he's still delighted about it!
N4nny I hope you feel better in time for your HM
DrNo that's a great time first day back running. Take it easy though.
possom that's a fab 10k time.
Fanny sorry to hear about your wrist, Moshi's comment was quality though Grin

I managed to get out yesterday and do 6. I had 10 planned, but a combination of atrotious weather, sunday lunch and the All Ireland Hurling final conspired against me. I'll do 5 tomorrow and might attempt my LSR on Thursday evening instead. We'll see. Really creaking this morning, plus getting punched in the head by dd as we were trying to get her to go on the school bus didn't help. She's having such a tough transition, but we are making progress.

Thanks for all the encouragement on Friday when I felt that a run was completely beyond me.

sfxmum · 05/09/2011 10:20

robino good luck with school starts and anyone else with new starters and returners today too
we only get back on Wednesday

wheely dh read Born to Run so it is on the shelf

I am going through Sam Murphy's Run for Life and I am very fond of the quote about perfect motion as you first start running

''Think of something funny to make yourself smile, breathe freely and focus on running with grace and purpose. If I am having a 'bad form day' i try to imagine I am a gazelle, running lightly yet efficiently. (who cares if anyone else thinks I am an escaped elephant)'' well quite

happy runningSmile

stickylittlefingers · 05/09/2011 10:25

Wheelybug - good to hear your ankle's on the mend. Sorry to hear about having to do to McDonalds!

Moshi I told DD1 off well and truly when she went through a stage of writing on her furniture (and that was just felt tip!). Wouldn't really expect it of a grown woman, and not one who's meant to be helping... I'm sure Mrs Danvers wouldn't have done anything like that :)

I think this thread is getting to me. I spent the early hours this morning planning my 2 week run across Wainwright's Coast to Coast. This is very pie in the sky as I'm not sure if I deserve 2 weeks off (no good behaviour, you see), but wouldn't it just be wonderful?

LittleChiefRunnyCustard · 05/09/2011 11:27

I like those types of plans too sticky. I used to drive past walkers coming to the end of their Scottish coast to coasts on my way to work and they always looked happy, even in the rain.

When my kids have flown the nest I intend to do something like that - maybe run the West Highland Way.

DebiTheScot · 05/09/2011 12:32

Bookmarking. Need to catch up.

rhetorician · 05/09/2011 13:47

encyclo indeed, courtesy of the Civil Partnership Act 2010! DP and I already had one, as I am British and she was born in Northern Ireland (the oh so romantic setting of the passport desk at the british embassy - when closed to the public!)

hoovering every nook and cranny of the house as one of the cats has clearly brought in a flea. What a total pain...steam cleaning to follow. Not sure when I will get to run today - when I get to Cork, maybe? Up and down the length of the train?

OP posts:
orangehead · 05/09/2011 16:25

Intervals went well this morning and only one dog on the park which was on its lead and the very nice lady made sure the dog was well away everytime I ran past Grin
I think there was a few starting school today, how did it go?
Mine going back tomorrow, will miss them but be nice to get back into a routine and sort my house out. Feel like its a mess

DrNortherner · 05/09/2011 16:49

Hope first day at school for the runners kids today went well? Moshi?

Ds goes back tomorrow. He is ready. He is 9 and is either so grown up and responsible I can hardly believe it, or, rolling around on the floor like an utter loon not listening to anything we say. There seems to be no middle ground Hmm

Drill sesh for me tonight, in a new location with less equipment as we prepare for winter training.

Meant to say how amazing was Mo Farrah?!

MoshiMoshi · 05/09/2011 17:23

sticky and custard - Shall we plan a long distance adventure now as I have always dreamed of doing something like that when the kids are older. I have an amazing book on Ultrarunning which describes these amazing races around the world which I plan to do when time permits. It would mean being able to combine the two things I love to do but which having children has meant I have had to compromise on: travel with running.

DrNo - DD2 enjoyed school today! She is delighted to be accompanying her big sister in now after having had to deliver her to the school door these past two years. They are thick as thieves so she is pleased to be with her again. I think DD1 is also pleased she has joined her as she seems to have generated her lots of attention which DD1 rather likes with everyone noticing her little sister.

BTW your DS sounds rather like mine. 8 going on 18 but with occasional flashes of the 4 year old that he used to be (I think his sisters bring it out in him!)

And how good does your running club sound? I want to join in all of the sessions you mention on here!

Yes, Mo was AMAZING! I was shouting at the telly so much I made DD3 burst into tears. Even DH who has no interest in sport, and especially running, said it was exciting!

Roll up, roll up! Speaking of books, I am mid-clearout and found two books I received for Christmas which I already have. As I am too lazy to return them to Waterstones, I would like to offer them to anyone who would like one or both of them. It is my mission to share my passion for running and if I can do it by peddling books on it the so much the better!

They are:

Complete Book of Running For Women

Everyone's favourite!

DebiTheScot · 05/09/2011 17:25

Have skimmed all the posts over the past week while I've been away. Not much interesting to say really other than DrNo did you mean 50mins for GNR? The HM world record is 58 mins so either he's telling porkies or you did a typo!

Had a good week away with 2 nights in the Lake District, 5 in a teeny tiny static caravan in Fort William and 1 in a Travelodge on the M62. Didn't do any running though as we were out doing stuff all day every day and by the time the boys were in bed it was getting dark and the only place I could have run was on an A road with no pavement.

I'm doing a 40km cycling 'race' on Sunday that I'm not as ready for as I'd like to be but it should be fine. It claims not to be a race but it timed and there's prizes for the winners so that sounds like a race to me. It's at Whipsnade Zoo so we're used tesco vouchers to get dh and the boys in (I get in as part of my entry fee) so it should be a good day out.

Then I've got two 10k races planned which I should get entered so I can put them on the list. The duathlon I wanted to do might not happen now. It starts at 7am and is over an hour drive away. If my friend really wants to do it I'll do it but if not I'll do another one which is on a car racetrack but I'd have to do it on my own.

DebiTheScot · 05/09/2011 17:30

I want to do this (in my imaginary world where I am superfit and have no children and lots of money) www.scotlandcoasttocoast.com/index.html

Moshi can I have "everyone's favourite"? Then I'd be happy to send it on to anyone else who hasn't read it?

Also meant to say I discovered there are 9 running clubs within a 15 min drive of my house!! I really should join one shouldn't I?

DS1 back to school tomorrow and I'm back Wed for what i think is going to be hard term.

MoshiMoshi · 05/09/2011 17:36

debi - Of course! What a good idea too. PM me your address either on here or on FB and I will post it to you!

fannybanjo · 05/09/2011 20:29

Evening ladies, hope everyone getting back into swing of term time and what is now Christmas countdown.... Grin

Moshi what a bloody knobchops your housekeeper is for doing that! Hmm Blooooodddyyyyyy hellllllllll I'd have written all over her face in permanent marker!! Wink (wouldn't really but would have felt like it!) Also would you mind if I take the "women's guide to running" book, if that is okay? I will send you postage - do you have paypal?

Debi I thought you hadn't been around but it so quick this thread I couldn't remember whether you said you were going away. Nice to have you back and bike race sounds great. I am still itching to buy a bike.

DrNo I too thought "HM in 50 mins"....?? Eager to know if it was a typo or some bloke out to impress you!

Recovery run done and dusted - kept pace right down as instructed and was fine. Awful day with wrist, ended up seeing nurse who said I have sprained it badly then what with ironing etc have aggravated tendons more... Sad - nothing can do other than grin and bear it but what with having DD3 especially needing picking up still, it's been hard work today. Felt very out of sorts as the pain is constant and very tiring. Could kick myself for doing too much. Learned a lesson though.

MoshiMoshi · 05/09/2011 20:47

Tis yours, fanny! PM me your address. DH has PayPal but it really isn't necessary. Just give me the equivalent amount of supportive comments like the one you just did about the housekeeper Grin to make it up!

fannybanjo · 05/09/2011 21:34

shitty mcshit - I am struggling to get a "decent" campsite in decent proximity to GNR - would I be totally stupid to get up early on morning of run and DH, DD1 and I drive there....? It is approx 3 hours drive.... Yes, it is a pathetic idea isn't it? It just seems crazy that we are going to have to get motorhome sorted and set off before the race which won't be easy. ARGHHHHHHH I am beginning to wish I hadn't entered. It is turning into a huge headache for me.

orangehead · 05/09/2011 21:54

Glad the first day went well Moshi
Well my leg and foot a bit sore again, same thing happened last week after I had done intervals then after a couple of days ok. Done intervals again today and sore again

backwardpossom · 05/09/2011 22:02

Ah fanny when I did the Edinburgh HM, I ended up staying in Fife because there was nowhere to stay in Edinburgh itself. Any chance of staying somewhere within even an hour's radius?

Debi joining my running club has made a huge difference to my running, both in terms of speed and just general motivation. Plus the social aspect of it is great :) Go for it!

We went back to school 3 weeks ago. I'm counting down to the October holidays! 5 weeks to go!

Thanks for the confidence boost about my race. I suppose on reflection it wasn't so bad, but I think I'd hyped myself up and because I made a mess of my plan, I was so disappointed. Definitely onwards and upwards! I've got a week off this weekend, then it's my local 10k (Buckie) the weekend after. Then the weekend after that, I have the tri if I definitely enter it, which I think I will(!) and then it's the Baxters Loch Ness 10k. And I think that's me for the year... well until I find something else to torment myself with...

Happy running, all!

YeahThatsTheBadger · 05/09/2011 22:13

Fanny although I hate the phrase, your posts actually make me laugh out loud! Could you put something on MN about your campsite predicament and see if anyone can help?

Well I just had a shit run in the gym. No particular reason but it just didn't feel right when I started. Then mid run I lost the foam cover for one of my headphones and the headphone kept slipping out of my ear. And I felt so heavy legged. Then when I got in the car to go home I realised my tshirt was inside out Blush. Oh well, next time can only be better. Grin

DebiTheScot · 05/09/2011 22:21

fanny someone might let you stay on their drive. Do you know anyone who lives up there? Asking on here could be a good idea.

sfxmum · 05/09/2011 22:35

fanny some friends who used to live up there will be going up to to the GNR I can try and ask if any of their mates can help, they are a very sociable lot so might be able to help, it is a long shot but who knows
