Sad world WITHOUT sons and daughters... (really must proof read but cannot be arsed) Blush

rhetorician · 31/08/2011 21:54

ah, don't mind me - it's just the way I talk. I love her to bits - am a bit nervous about how we'll manage with 2, but I'm not that great at dealing with the unknown.

More running - that's the answer!

OP posts:
fannybanjo · 31/08/2011 21:58

rhet I've a typical scouse sense of humour that when I was on FB a while back, I'm surprised "friends" on there weren't monitoring me for Social Services - I'd always be derogatory as a piss take as couldn't abide the FB masses who posted how much they loved their precious little men blah blah blah so I'm with you with the sarcasm!

stickylittlefingers · 31/08/2011 22:04

hello all! This is such a fast moving thread!

Did a 10k this morning. Very happy it was just under 1 hour. But then, the bloody ipod lost it! So it's like it never happened. Bloody thing, I am so not feeling the love. I'm showing it this thread and explaining how Other People use garmins, that'll larn it...

I too hate bloody dogs off leads. Mind you, even on leads, there's "Bill Sykes" on the bridleway I run on a lot, whose horrible dog always goes for my calves.

Fanny you're right about the dangers for the lone woman runner. I stopped running on pavements I got so fed up with the builder-type comments. The runners' world guide pointed out that it's statistically safer to run early, because there are fewer incidents then than later on. Gave me a nice mental picture of Filthy Old Man setting his alarm clock early to get in some extra woman worrying...

We took the girls up to Alnwich castle today, followed by a walk on Druridge Bay. Lovely! I was thinking Fanny that you could do a lot worse than a site near Druridge Bay - would give you the opportunity to sit around while the kids play on the beach (it's stunning), and it's not so far to come down on the Sunday morning. Unless you can actually stay in South Shields, which would be very handy!!

rhetorician · 31/08/2011 22:15

dogs - yes, hate them - well, their owners, actually, the 'don't worry love, he won't hurt you' comment as said dog is snarling, slavering and snapping at your ankles Angry

OP posts:
stickylittlefingers · 31/08/2011 22:50

ah sure, he's only playing! grrrr

The worst ones for me is on a Sunday, there is a group of women who each have a pack of fluffy mutts, little draught excluders on legs which run all over the path unpredictably... one day I will accidentally crush one.

LittleChiefRunnyCustard · 01/09/2011 08:15

(Psst - it's me Chewy, I have name changed)

Still waiting for my new trainers....

So did 40 mins on the exercise bike last night - used heart rate programme but I don't think it is working properly as setting it for target 115 bpm felt like a decent workout. Is this just because I am crap at cycling? Also ended up watching a tv programme about shipping containers on BBC 4 - surprisingly interesting!

Two of my (teenage, male) friends used to slow down in the car and offer runners and cyclists biscuits through the passenger window. My 17yr old self found this hilarious, now I am mortified. Blush

MoshiMoshi · 01/09/2011 08:34

Oh help. DS went to school today and couldn't wait to get rid of me .... He seemed almost embarrassed to be seen with me Sad.

bonkers20 · 01/09/2011 09:46

Aww, Mosh...it's all bravado. He'll be desperate to see you later. You can't win though can you? They dash off without a backward glance and you're all hurt that they're not attached or don't love you or whatever. Or they cling on to you and you're both sobbing at being apart.

I've sent my big one (12) to his grandad to stack logs for the day. He's been allowed to stay home alone for one or two days these hols, but lost that privilege last week when he didn't keep in touch via mobile (and didn't seem to understand why this was a problem). That'll learn him!

It's SO fun to embarrass your children when they get older. Oh the times I've threatened him with belting out Que Sera Sera in Tesco.

Anyway, back on topic. Off for a run at lunch time with me mate Jeff. 5 miles.

DrNortherner · 01/09/2011 10:03

Well I might have to fall out with you on this thread if the dog bashing continues Grin There are plenty of other threads on MN for dog bashing. Be nice to our four legged friends or Moshi and I will be setting our labs and Vislas on you all Wink

My official time is in, 55.35, 9th in my age group.

My leg will get better soon. (repeat x 100)

cestlavie · 01/09/2011 10:11

Ah Moshi, no easy answer is there as bonkers says though I?ll definitely miss the clingy stage. DS (almost 6) is still just about at that stage which I love so am trying to make the most of it while I can... Admittedly this involves engaging in more conversations about Ben 10 than any sane person should but hey! On a point exciting note how?re the Kswiss? Having been looking through the RW autumn/ winter shoe reviews in this month?s edition I was drooling over admiring the website at the weekend (whilst trying to ignore DW?s pitying comments)

Share your dog pain rhet/ sticky especially since favoured breed in east London appears to be some sort of pit-bull-mastiff cross breed (typically found to be dragging a 12 year old across the payement at high speed).

cestlavie · 01/09/2011 10:12

Oops sorry DrNo! Do love dogs just sometimes not so much whilst out running!

Congrats on time again - great result. Single digit position in age group!

DrNortherner · 01/09/2011 10:13

Anoyone run in Newton shoes? Was reading about them last night and they seem interesting......

MoshiMoshi · 01/09/2011 10:21

You are right about the bravado. We can't win can we, us parents? And yes, please desist with the dog bashing, speaking as the responsible owner of a dog who is in training as my running companion and already showing great promise. Grin

Congratulations on your official time and 9th place, DrNo! You can, no should, focus on sub-50 I think for your next 10K. If you follow a 10K plan (with speed work) I am sure you will manage it. You have been running such a relatively short time and seen such a huge improvement that with your dedication and talent I am sure it will be possible!

Updated list. I am doing another HM this year to see whether I can reap the benefits of my post-marathon fitness. It really works for some, although knowing my luck I will be one of those who runs like a brick after a marathon. I'll see you in Norwich, ibbydibby!

stickylittlefingers · 01/09/2011 10:23

poor moshi - but it's good that he's growing up. He'll always need you!

DD2 (only 4) seems to have hit that stage already. Whenever she's going to a party she always tells me several times, starting the night before, that my continued presence will not be required. Even if the other parents are having a jolly time drinking wine in the corner - I'm reduced to pleading to be allowed to stay for one...Blush

Oh yes, generally I'd be a dog fan, it's just the ones who want to sink their teeth into me/trip me up when I'm out running that I object to. And of course, it's the owner, not the dog that's really the problem.

Now, I'm just putting off making an awkward phone call, so better go and do it!

Sleepwhenidie · 01/09/2011 10:42

Hi everyone, I got back from hols in Alps on Tuesday (no Internet access and my phone died so completely incommunicado, it was quite nice!). This thread moves so fast, it has taken me til now to catch up! I am so impressed with everyone's commitment and progress, moshi I am in awe!

I managed to run pretty much every other day and can attest to the training benefits of running at altitude, it was hard! I made the mistake first time out of heading downhill, which of course made the return journey really hard, not helped by the sudden appearance of a huge storm...made me speed up a bit to get home though! After that I did the uphill leg first, picked a stunning route alongside a river, passing through what would be pistes in winter with amazing backdrop of sunset and mountains. I did most of the return bit on the road as it was almost dark by then and I feared for broken ankles in the forest. It felt amazing running on smooth ground and with slight downhill all the way after the struggle up!

Continuing the loose animal theme, one run was slightly interrupted when I came across three horses on the path, I thought this was unusual and slowed to a walk not to startle them but they decided that I was the person come to take them home and started following me Shock. Now while I'm not exactly afraid of horses, I'm not used to them either and thought that if I started running again they would run too...leading to visions of me pelting across fields pursued by these horses Grin so I slightly nervously and sheepishly kept walking with them in a row behind me. Eventually, after about 5 minutes they lost interest and wandered off!

Anyway, I went out and did 10k yesterday and felt great, the hills here that left me breathless a couple of weeks ago seemed like a doodle, so it was worth the effort on holiday. I didn't try road biking after all, mainly because of lack of childcare, but we did do some great mountain biking, with DS on his own bike there for the first time. He was amazing, one day cycling 7miles uphill off road and back after some lunch and another going all the way from the top of the valley back home (about 3hrs off road) not bad for a small guy, just turned 6, on a bike with no gears and just a front brake! In a couple of years he will be leaving his dad behind we think! Very glad he is showing skill in this sport as he has unfortunately inherited my hand/eye coordination with balls (zero Sad), something we worry a bit about for school sport...

stickylittlefingers · 01/09/2011 10:45

wow sleepwhenidie it sounds like you had a wonderful holiday. I'm very impressed by your DS! He's got great stamina for a little one, and must have very strong legs already.

I love the mental picture of you being pursued by 3 horses Grin.

WishIwasCherryMenlove · 01/09/2011 11:00

Hi all,

Just checking in. Recovered from my fluey bug so managed a couple of runs this week and I had a really great swim this morning.

I have definitely got to the stage now where I really look forward to going out running - stick my music on and go. Oh and I got some new trainers finally, our local running shop is amazing as they did the whole gait analysis thing on a treadmill with video to capture my stride and compare in different shoes. After having tried on about 6 pairs, I ended up with another pair of Brookes.

Sleepwhenidie your holiday sounds like my ideal holiday. I think we'll be doing similar things when DS is a bit older.

Lastly, if you have any tips on weddings that are cheap tips/with a difference, I'd love to hear it. Currently in tense negotiations with DP about this. I've created a thread in the chat section for this so feel free to join in!

Sleepwhenidie · 01/09/2011 11:22

Funnily enough cherry we had our wedding celebrations in the same place as the holiday, it was fantastic, three days of friends and their kids, biking, swimming, horse riding and White water rafting then great nights out, less than the cost of a "nice" one day traditional thing here. Pm me if you want to know more, rather than me hijacking thread and boring everyone to death!

cestlavie · 01/09/2011 11:24

Just updating as hadn't seemed to update for my race change. Lot of races coming up soon!

Moshi just noticed your name on the Norwich half-marathon, then saw you had mentioned this in a post. See you there - hopefully. The 2010 was cancelled with around 24 hours notice (or even less) because that weekend is when the month of bad weather started around here. Must be awful to have to cancel something like that, also felt sorry for everyone who had spent so long training for it - must have been a huge anti-climax. Was re-run in March this year. I dilly-dallied for too long last year, and by the time I thought about entering (Sept/Oct?) places had gone. After cancellation few more places became available for March but again I missed these. Hence this year I booked up in June.

DH still deciding though he has run it last 3 years.

Will need to up my training for certain now......birthday soon so hoping that I will be joining the Garminified...

Your holiday sounds great sleepwhenIdie

WishIwasCherryMenlove · 01/09/2011 13:05

sleepwhenIdie I have messaged you (I think??), sounds a great sort of wedding. I am intrigued and imagining some sort of ceremony on a white water raft going down some rapids!

bonkers20 · 01/09/2011 13:51

Ooooh, I was talking about the Norwich 1/2 with my DH last night. I went to school in Norwich and my Father and sister live nearby.

Shall I do it? We could enter a MN team! OK, just going to Google it.

bonkers20 · 01/09/2011 13:54

Urgggg, it's not really the City of Norwich is it? And a 2 lapper...not keen. Much of it is my old bus route to school.

ibbydibby · 01/09/2011 14:04

bonkers20 it starts and finishes at Royal Norfolk Show ground, and goes out around Easton (I think). No longer goes into city, but still bears the name. Do it....which school did you go to?
