The Couch to 5k 2011 - Part 3 : Keep Holding My Hand So We Don’t get Separated!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 12/07/2011 23:07

Yet more space for us to talk about our progress on the Couch to 5K programme, the stuff we wear and the music we listen to! New runners are warmly welcomed - come and give it a whirl, you know you want to! There has been a lot of success on this thread, both in the UK and internationally, moral support is abundant, and there is always a kick up the arse for anyone who needs one!

If we stick together we will enjoy success, I thought song lyrics were appropriate so in the words of Gwen Stefani.. Grin

Run, running all the time
Running to the future
With you right by my side
Me, I'm the one you chose
Out of all the people
You wanted me the most

Running, running, as fast as we can
As fast as we can
Do you think you'll make it?
Do you think we'll make it?
We're running, keep holding my hand
It's so we don't get separated

Be, be the one I need
Be the one I trust most
Don't stop inspiring me...

Good luck everyone x
Wine

Hello Bafana, welcome, I managed to get past 40 before I decided to do something about my fitness but am definitely in the same frame of mind as you. I'm doing the C25K for the second time but faster this time, having got to the end, found I was only managing about 4k and not managing to get the speed up. IYSWIM.

Week 3 Run 1 tonight. Didn't feel great TBH, but I was laid up in bed sick 3 days ago so I shouldn't be too hard on myself. Also had tried Level 2 of the Shred a few hours earlier.

BsshBossh · 19/09/2011 19:45

Hello all, I was struck down with food poisoning last week then a cold and am still trying to recover so no running for me until next week. The crazy thing is, is that I miss it! Who'd have thunk it Grin. So still stuck at W4.

shreddedandnotatallsmug · 19/09/2011 23:56

Aw Bssh, hope you bounce back soon.

RESPECT to WhoKnows for RUNNING AND SHREDDING in the same day!!!!!

I would go out for a run but all the streets around me are cordoned off because the President is in town. My doorman was pointing out the sharpshooters on neighbouring roofs when I came home this evening Shock

bafanatheSober · 20/09/2011 10:56

Thanks for the warm welcome!
I am in Day 1 Week 2, didn't run this morning, as I am trying to run Monday, Wed and Friday, but I did actually feel the urge to run when I woke up, but I do this all the time, start something new, do too much and then it doesn't go anywhere, so slowly and steadily, got up and emptied the dishwasher and hung out the washing instead Grin.

I am hoping that running first thing in the morning will also boost my metabolism for the rest of the day, and am trying to be really strict with myself about eating breakfast, in order to make sure that I am treating my body right!

Am liking the excuse of not going running because of sharpshooters!!! Unfortunately or fortunately I am never going to have that excuse in rural Scotland!

Hope everybody has a good day!

shreddedandnotatallsmug · 20/09/2011 12:24

bafana, I like your style. I also get too keen on things and fizzle out (viz my exercise ball gathering dust in DCs' room).

LinzerTorte · 20/09/2011 12:56

I'm also a seven day wonder type of person, bafana. Or is it nine day wonder? At any rate, DH wasn't at all impressed by me spending ?100 on running shoes before I'd even started and made me solemnly promise not to give up after just a few weeks. I have proved him wrong. Grin (And amazed myself in the process.)

Yes, yours is definitely the most impressive excuse I've ever heard, shredded. The most excitement we've ever had here was when armed police guarded the hotel just down the road while the Italian football team were staying there during the Euro, but I don't think they went as far as putting sharpshooters on roofs. Grin

Hope you're feeling better now, Bssh. And am very impressed by you running and shredding not long after your stomach bug, WhoKnows - I'm sure I used mine as an excuse for much longer!

Talking of excuses, I really must go out tomorrow.

mollycuddles · 20/09/2011 14:01

Ok, which one of you lot passed your stomach bug on to me? Feeling rubbish and meant to be competing in a 10k on Saturday. (my thread about feeling guilty about leaving dd2 with a friend when I went running told me firmly I wasn't being UR so I paid the entry fee and have been sick ever since)

And why didn't I get the bug that gives you an, albeit temporary, flat tummy? I've never had one of those. It'd be a nice change.

I'm 40 in may so of similar vintage to you bafana and Linzer. I decided to start this because I'll have to work until my 60s now we've had dd2 so I need to be fit to cope with another 20+ years in the NHS.

Well done to all the shredders.

Saw your thread re other slow/big runners diddl - everyone looks fitter than you when you start but not everyone is and certainly won't be for long. I started c25k at over 16 stone. I'm still slow but at least now I look a bit more like a runner.

BearGryllsBra · 20/09/2011 16:41

Ooooh I've got the tummy bug too, and it's not the sodding flat tummy bug either :( Have felt rubbish for a few days. So not been out. Concentrating on not being sick. Hope you're feeling better Bssh.

Well done to everyone who has though, and welcome bafana! My house is full of things that I've started and had to have all the stuff for and then I've sort of lost interest and it's all sort of fizzled out. Running wasn't one of them ... until now. So I'm a nine day wonder too.

A mini meet sounds most fantastic Pistey but boo hoo I can't come. :( Our half term is the week before everyone else in the world's so I'll be back at work. But I want a FULL REPORT in spreadsheet form of any nail varnish purchases and pictures sent to my email. As it happens.

shredded there's never a dull moment with you is there? Wink Mind you, you do live in the city that never sleeps. It's either hurricanes, coyotes or Presidents. I was there once when Bill Clinton (shows ancient age now) was in town and it was, I'm searching for a word to describe it, surreal maybe. But fascinating. If you don't get home till after Christmas, let me know if there's anything you need sending out to you.

WhoKnows running and shredding - on the same day - marvellisimo!

to everyone from comfy sofa my sick bed.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 20/09/2011 19:14

Hope all are well soooooon...

welcome to bafanatheSober

sybilfaulty · 20/09/2011 19:27

Hello everyone.

Sorry for all the sickies. Hope you are all soon better.

I have worked flat out today and so am exhausted. I have had to postpone my run til tomorrow as I am too pooped to go. Another day, another dollar. I will crack my new speedy C25K programme. Tomorrow is W2, R2.

I am now going to multitask with some work for tomorrow and the Great British bake off on TV. I really fancy wine but am trying hard not to drink in the week. I must resist.

Building unlikely to finish before beginning Oct, so I am safe from the shred til then.

LinzerTorte · 20/09/2011 19:41

Oh no, Bear and molly - hope you're both feeling better soon. I hope it wasn't me who started it as I think I was the first one on the thread to come down with the bug! What bad timing before your 10k, molly. My tummy is looking distinctly rounded again now btw; it only lasted about a day, so really wasn't worth 24 hours of feeling dreadful!

Oh, that's a shame Bear; you can't make it on the Sunday afternoon then either, I take it? Needless to say, I shall send you full details of all nail polishes discussed, purchased, worn and applied. Grin

Tomorrow's weather forecast is looking good (dry but not too hot), so I have no excuses not to go out tomorrow. Well, apart from the fact that I still have two English lessons to plan for Thursday, but if I stay off MN and do a bit tonight, I'm sure I can afford to go out for 30 minutes tomorrow. (Actually, it's not the running that takes up all the time, it's having to wash and dry my hair afterwards. I wonder if wearing a purple beanie would stop my hair getting so frizzy after my runs.)

shreddedandnotatallsmug · 21/09/2011 01:10

Sorry to hear of all you poorly people. Sending getting better vibes your way molly and Bear.

Well I am in PRSP Grin. Had a rubbish day at work, so decided to copy WhoKnows and sybil and do C25K again. I jogged most of the walking bits, and ran the running bits some faster than others. I feel sooo much better for getting out there. I'm sure the cardio bits of the shred helped with the speedy bits.

LinzerTorte · 21/09/2011 07:28

Well done on getting out, shredded. It's all worth it for the PRSP, isn't it? Grin I've delayed going out this morning to avoid bumping into DD2's class, who are going out for a Wandertag ("hiking day", i.e. a glorified walk), but it can't be put off any longer... They must be well out of the way by now.

LinzerTorte · 21/09/2011 08:20

Now in PRSP. Grin Managed to break my PB by 9 seconds; I'm sure the Shred is helping. I often wish I was out running instead of shredding, as it seems easy in comparison (while I'm shredding at any rate; it doesn't actually feel too easy when I'm out running, I hasten to add!).

bafanatheSober · 21/09/2011 10:08

Morning All

Right - firstly what is PRSP?? Grin is this a secret code that I am not knowing??

Hope everyone is feeling better? There is really nothing good about a tummy bug is there.
Well was up at 7 again this morning, but once again managed to pick to the wrong run, so did wk 1 run 3. Twas fine though, apart from the fact that I tackled a hill and thought that I was going to die, and really did wonder what the hell I was doing instead of being in my bed!
However I got through it, and am feeling good for it.

Another question, what do you guys do about visibility? It's getting dark here in the mornings. And do you start of in a fleece and then strip off to a T, or do you hardcore it with just a T from the outset.

Sorry for all the questions
Have a great day everyone!
Bafana

LinzerTorte · 21/09/2011 10:28

Well done on your run, bafana. It sounds like you definitely deserve to be in PRSP (post-running smug phase). Smile

Re visibility, I don't normally go running until after I've dropped the DC off at 8 am so haven't had that problem yet.

On colder mornings, I've started off in a T-shirt and running jacket (I started running in April, so haven't had any really cold temperatures to contend with yet) and then tied my running jacket round my waist when I've warmed up a bit. It took me a few runs before I realised that I needed to tie it in a double knot to stop it slipping down. Grin

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 21/09/2011 14:56

Bafana - I'm wearing 3/4 or long sleeve white cotton tee shirt type tops (from Sainsburys mostly, not running tops), I have to have sleeves or my Iphone armband rubs my arm and makes it sore. They are warm enough for cooler days so far. I would rather be cold at the start than having to carry a fleece around later. I feel fairly visible in those as they are white. I have got a hi-vis sleeveless jacket in the car for breakdowns, might start using if I have to go out at night, most of my usual routes are largely unlit though so I am going to try and stick to daytime as much as possible. May well invest in a hi-vis running jacket soon though for warmth as well as visibility.

W3R2 today, again not great, I went too soon after lunch and felt heavy and bloated, all the uphill bits are in the middle of the fast intervals this week, grrr!

JelliBelli · 21/09/2011 17:31

Hi All, been away with DH for a few days to Aberfeldy in Scotland, a very nice area. I'm sorry to hear about all the lurgy and a bit Envy about the nail garnish meetup to come. I think I may join you in the re-run of C25K to increase speed.....

DH has a dodgy calf so I went running on my own - up a waterfall walk! It was a bit steep! I had to walk on the way up but on the plus side I came down a bit sharpish and even had a comedy ricochet (sp?) off a fence as I approached a corner a bit out of control and too fast. I felt like a kid again running downhill out of control and expected to find myself spreadeagled on the floor with scraped knees at any moment Grin !! On the other days we Jillianed in the room heaven know what the downstairs people thought was going on Wink so I am hoping tht will offset the cooked breakfasts and three course dinners that we have consumed for the last few days!!

I wear my pink running jacket over my long sleeved wicky running top but might hunt out a reflective sam brown to wear over the top in the dark. I am a new runner too (April starter) so I haven't run in the cold before, so I will watch with interest for advice.

KristinaM · 21/09/2011 21:02

LOL jellibelli, you ran up the birks o aberfeldy. They are very famous

shreddedandnotatallsmug · 22/09/2011 00:56

linzer my Lands End catalogue has turned up with lots of purple headgear!

this?

or this?

this is nice

not sure if this is purple enough?

for girls, but a large might be big enough

these are great for running in

shreddedandnotatallsmug · 22/09/2011 00:58

Bafana, I'm running on well-lit city streets, so I haven't thought too hard about visibility. All my running gear (cheap Karrimor from Sports Direct) has little silver reflective bits on it.

shreddedandnotatallsmug · 22/09/2011 01:00

And the birks o Aberfeldy sound/look lovely!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 22/09/2011 09:10

I've got a fleece headband (sadly not purple) for running on cold or windy days, hats make my head hot and itchy but cold winds give my earache very quickly so its very useful. If I get too hot in it I take it off and wrap it round my wrist. Also useful for keeping stray bits of hair off the face.

I'm thinking that my winter routine will be Monday and Friday after school drop off (I don't normally work on those days) and Saturday teatime, rather than all evenings as I do at the moment.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 22/09/2011 13:54

I have done something really stupid and you can all tell me I'm really stupid Sad

I ran out of one of my preventer inhalers last Friday and will get replacements tomorrow (v disorganised) But my lungs are feeling more and more congested and ropey, so I think it is unlikely that I will (or should) shred or run until at least Sunday Sad as these things need to build up again.

When my asthma is under control, it is exactly that, under control, but it isn't at the moment Sad

I shall post this on both threads, then you will all know what a loon I am, I'm far too casual..
