The Couch to 5k 2011 - Part 3 : Keep Holding My Hand So We Don’t get Separated!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 12/07/2011 23:07

Yet more space for us to talk about our progress on the Couch to 5K programme, the stuff we wear and the music we listen to! New runners are warmly welcomed - come and give it a whirl, you know you want to! There has been a lot of success on this thread, both in the UK and internationally, moral support is abundant, and there is always a kick up the arse for anyone who needs one!

If we stick together we will enjoy success, I thought song lyrics were appropriate so in the words of Gwen Stefani.. Grin

Run, running all the time
Running to the future
With you right by my side
Me, I'm the one you chose
Out of all the people
You wanted me the most

Running, running, as fast as we can
As fast as we can
Do you think you'll make it?
Do you think we'll make it?
We're running, keep holding my hand
It's so we don't get separated

Be, be the one I need
Be the one I trust most
Don't stop inspiring me...

Good luck everyone x

I think the technical term is buggered off
The pollen has buggered off!

So Lino lungs today, not fully fitted carpet Bear? I am the same here too. How weird. There is heavy rain forecast tonight and that might help too. I too relate to rhino breathing Grin

Go Tom!!
and Go Margaret!!
And Go Margaret's eyebrows!!!

Boxercise was excellent and was knackering! My shape has changed too - do you remember when we all thought we had corners in our bums? Well I do still! My legs are more toned and around my tummy and hips is flat and toned, and I'm sure that is all thanks to the running. My arse is not so jolly...

Oooh well done octopus on the weight loss and the running! You will do it, just you wait and see ....

Pistey - Grin at buggered orf - that is exactly what the pollen has done!

Now these here corners .... when I joined the thread and heard talk of these corners I had no idea what you were all on about but was too shy to ask and pretended I had them too. But I clearly don't Grin. Nor do I have the other items that you have, namely toned legs and flat toned hips and tummy. But my bum feels a bit harder on the sides - have I got a corner? Have I? HAVE I?! Actually before I had my setback, when I was up to W8, I did notice that my legs from the feet to midthigh looked quite nice. Maybe the toned part was working its way up?! Maybe I need boxercise too?

Anyway if you've got corners, then I want some too. Shall I add them to the BearBryllsBra Catalogue?

MargaretMountfordsEyebrows · 15/07/2011 22:32

Pistey Edinburgh isn't what it was.

Grin
RatherBeOnThePiste · 16/07/2011 09:07

Never before in the history of car washing have so few cars been washed by so many people in such a long time

And who can forget Edinburgh? Still makes me laugh!
And everything always said with an overwhelming air of disapproval, an absolute class act
Grin

Margaret Mountford - we salute you

Right back on track - corners you say??!! They definitely need adding to the BearGryllsBra catalogue, but maybe as an appendix of luxury items?

I do have more of a corner than I did, and when I say my legs are more toned then they were, please don't think they are toned, it is all relative!
Blush and Grin

CORNERS

  1. To establish whether you have a corner, you need to stand side ways on to a full length mirror. I'm sorry to say it but this is easier to see if you have nothing on Blush

  2. Now... do your legs go up, from your ankles, getting progressively wider until they reach and include your bum, in a sort of cone like continuum? Like this but with less chocolate??!! If they do, then sadly you have no corner Sad

  3. If your legs go up from your ankles in a line, but then when they reach your bum, there is a definite jutting out where it attaches to your legs, as in it is very clearly different and separate, then you have a corner. Smile

I didn't when we started running. But now I do

Oh oh oh what a great explanation Pistey, especially the pic! I'm going to strip off and have a look in a mo .

God bless Margaret, she is so fab. Do you remember the eyebrow last year when Stuart came into his interview with "Hello, Margaret". Priceless.

Ran this mornign but hungover and slow. Will try again tomorrow.

My wetpod is this one but in pink. Brilliant if you are a swimmer as it helps to relieve the boredom. Good for running too, stuffed down my BG bra. I think they sell armbands for it but I am happy with it in the bra.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 16/07/2011 12:08

I heard Margaret was replacing Karren again next year, Karren's been OK, but it hasn't been the same so I hop it turns out to be true.

Thanks for the link Sybil will show it to DH (I quite like the idea myself, I don't swim very often, mainly because I get bored). We already awash with Ipods etc in this house though.

BearGryllsBra · 16/07/2011 12:10

Oh yes sybil, with Baggs The Brand! So funny.

Was quite pleased when I got up this morning that I wasn't running as it's been pouring down all night and looks very miserable. Like autumn. Good girl for going out hungover though!

Pleased you're still using your bra to full capacity although the wetpod is a great idea - I'm a rubbish swimmer. Not much better at running to be fair Grin.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 16/07/2011 13:16

So Bear... do you have a corner?

OP posts:
sybilfaulty · 16/07/2011 13:57

Grrrrrrrrrrr! Wrote a long post but the server was offline for maintenance. Now DS has drawn on the wall, the carpet and my piano. Am furious. Need to run again.

Wetpod is this one. Brilliant for swimming, beach and going in BG bra.

Will be back once I have calmed down.

BearNekkid · 17/07/2011 09:08

Have only just emerged from a darkened room after following Pistey's instructions Shock. Not a pretty sight although there are signs, albeit small unlike my arse, of corners emerging from the ice cream cones. Promising, but lots more work needs to be done ....

Arrrgh to sybil's walls, carpet and piano, can sympathise. My house bears evidence to the same, albeit a few years ago. Mind you the piano will always bear the scars of a dinner knife being tapped upon it repeatedly, and more recently when they are old enough to know better, I saw it being used as a glueing surface with a PrittStick! Angry.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 17/07/2011 11:26

Aw Bear (love the name) it's not so bad as Shock, and it sounds like you have Emergent Corners, and that is a really Good Thing, so big hug for you (((Bear))) congratulations! Grin

Ouch for Sybil too, and I share your gggrrrrrr........

I've been, ran 4K, and am in the Post Running Smug Phase

Hi,
Pistey I shall join you in your PRSP if I may? I've just come in from running for 40 mins continuously and feel pleased with myself!

It was blummin hard work at times as I went to a concert last night and was standing (dancing/jigging/getting shoved!) for hours then didn't get to bed until 3am - tut tut, so it was hard at times for having a tired body. Timing/food organisation didn't work well for me yesterday so I ended up eating just two bowls of cereal all day (midday and then 2.30am!) so I didn't consume much energy yesterday either. So however far I ran today it was going to be hard work. I was slow but I did it and I talked while i ran too which made it more fun. Progress I think Wink.

Sybil I remember the days of 'children decorating'. DS once decorated upstairs of our rented house with permanent green marker pen (while I was away for the weekend and DH was 'the reponsible adult'!! White spirit etc fumes don't go well with a hangover apparently Grin.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 17/07/2011 13:36

You certainly can Jelli - Post Running Smug Phase is a happy place

Such a Happy Place...

Ooh I have corners.

Have purchased a lightweight running jacket and it is now raining, i am feeling oddly excited at the propect of it's first outing.

Is it the 'bridge to 5k' app people are doing post c25k? I have the last w8 run when dh home so will be finished one week today.

Any advise on whether to jump straight into 10k training on concentrate on improving 5k speed? I have no idea if I'm even hitting 5k distance just following app, will use mapmyrun tonight to see how far I getting!

Jelli 40minutes sounds awesome - well done!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 17/07/2011 19:33

I have corners too, not sure if I had them before or not as I never really looked, and they aren't exactly Beyonce style but still.

To answer what are people doing next, I'm still floundering a bit on that one, veering between going the whole 5k very slowly or doing shorter distance but faster, depends a bit on how long I've got spare and how hilly the route is. I'm not planning to increase to 10k any time in the foreseeable, but would like to get to 5k in 30 mins (it's at least 40 mins to do it at the moment)

IlanaK · 17/07/2011 21:05

Hi. I have been lurking in here while doing the c25k (doing week 8 now) and wanted to help answer a question.

I have been thinking too of what to do next. I am not running 5k yet and also feel like I want to get to a 30 min 5 k before moving into anything else. I was reading Runners World magazine and it suggested that to increase your speed, you start by running faster for just one minute at a time. So I plan to start running one minute of every 5 at a much faster pace. Then increase it to two minutes. Etc,

Hope this helps.

happilyeverafter · 17/07/2011 21:22

Thanks whoKnows, that is kind of what I had in mind. Want to take a week running 5k in however long it takes but then aim is moving to 10k.

Ilanak I like the sprint idea. At the minute once I am over halfway I do odd little sprints but no pattern to them.

I started imapmyrun at the beginning of the 28min run (so not including warm up/down walks) and stats were:

Duration 28.11
Distance 4.19 km
Pace 0.65 mins/km

So I am a way off 5k/30 mins still!

sybilfaulty · 18/07/2011 18:17

Happily, I have a lovely running jacket as well. It's a bit hot for it most of the time at the moment so I am going to brave the rain in just my pink top.

Caught sight of myself on CCTV in a shopt today. NOt a pretty sight. must run harder and faster.

Keep on running everyone.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 18/07/2011 18:55

I think a problem of the C25K is that you can easily reach the end of the programme and still not be running 5K in the time, it has happened to lots of us on here. So then it is a matter of building up speed and stamina. I am trying to get closer to it, but am not there yet certainly! I can run 4K in 35 mins. But the fact I can run at all still astonishes me!!

OP posts:
WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 18/07/2011 18:58

I agree, it should really be called Couch to 30 Minutes Run, but I can see why it isn't! I was getting a bit disheartened when I got to about week 8 and realised I was nowhere near 5k, reassuring to know that it's not just me.

JelliBelli · 18/07/2011 19:14

For those that are considering what to do at the end of c25k....

I completed the c25k a month ago - I hadn't actually run 5k without stopping at that point as per my programme but was finishing between 30-35 mins including the walking (i think!).

I moved straight on to this 10k programme with Bupa. My iPod is too old for apps so I just work off a stopwatch (or I plot my route for distance on the internet) anyway. Again, I didn't have to run 5k continuously until W2R3. I ran W4R3 yesterday and I have definitely consolidated my running ability since finishing the 5k programme and felt the 40 mins was not much harder really than a 30 min run woud have been yesterday given what I did on Saturday.

I can't believe I am on course to run 6 MILES in four weeks! I still think of myself as a non runner who has dabbled a bit!!!

Anyway I hope that might have helped, happy running!

PS I have been running 3 miles around 31 mins if that helps anyone to compare

MarniesMummy · 18/07/2011 19:38

Oooh, Sweatybrawearer, I'm trying to work out who you used to be, hello one and all!

Do you want to know what I reckon (though obviously there's no reason why my opinion counts more than anyone elses)? I think running for 30 miutes is pretty shit hot! You run for 30 minutes and by increments that are so small that you haven't a hope of noticing, you'll be running further for the same amount of effort. What we need is consistency. 4k is bloody amazing. And I'll tell you something, it's 4k more than I could run in January when I started.
Hate I to sound all American motivational speaker on you, but we're doing brilliantly by exercising for 30 minutes every other day. THAT'S (the 30mins of exercise) is what is doing our bodies proud and getting us corners and stuff!

You're all fab, fab, fab!!
