a thread for runners to chat, debate, share tips, triumphs (and the occasional disaster!) - new runners particularly welcome, the only thing that's required is enthusiasm (and a pair of running shoes)

Ummm... just wanted to say standard Voltarol (Diclofenac Sodium 50mg) should only be taken 3 x day if anyone is thinking of taking it.

Quenelle · 24/06/2011 09:49

Morning all.

futurity so sorry, I didn't mean to panic you, the Standalone 10k has a downhill towards the start line. Those aiming for slower times accumulate at the top of the hill for the start. There's a small uphill just after the start but nothing to worry about, honest Smile. How much do you know/want to know about the course?

I have a Garmin 305, looking at Amazon there's about £10 difference between that and the 205 so not much in it.

And guess what, I work in Luton. Has it suddenly become centre of the universe or something?

pawsnclaws have you looked out towards Hitchin or Flitwick? Flitwick/Silsoe/Ampthill in particular would be considerably cheaper than Harpenden, which is lovely I agree.

thecoo thanks for the welcome. You're right, this thread does move fast. I spend far too much a lot of time on MN but this will indeed be hard to keep up with.

futurity · 24/06/2011 10:42

Is it a fast course? Can I get a PB?Wink
my DH wants to know if it starts in standalone farm and will he have to pay to go in with the kids whilst I am running!

Quenelle · 24/06/2011 12:31

It is good for a PB, yes. And it's downhill to just before the finish Smile

The actual start line is on the road just outside the farm but the finish line is inside it, as are all the bag storage, toilets, refreshments, registration etc. Having said that, I don't remember seeing any animals on race day so I've just emailed DH to doublecheck. He's done the 10k twice and also takes DS there occasionally.

sfxmum · 24/06/2011 12:55

hello

this thread has really moved fast so no chance to catch up just yet

just to wish master cest & badger Good Luck I hope the niggles and weather are kind to you on the day

had a slow but not particularly 5 miles this morning, it was however absolutely gorgeous and everyone I met seemed to be smiling so really there are worst ways of starting the daySmile

happy running all

notyummy · 24/06/2011 13:00

Good luck to all the racers!!

Just back from a 12.5 mile run and pretty disappointed with the time tbh. 1 hr 48, which is 8 38 miles and relatively slow compared to what I have done previously. I hadn't measured the route and thought it was least half a mile longer than it was, so was pretty crestfallen when I just calculated it on autoroute!!

Ah well - better luck next time....

cestlavie · 24/06/2011 17:41

Thanks all.

Good advice on the hat I'm sure but frankly I look such a doofus in headware that the shame would kill me before the heat. I have, however, bought the largest possible water bottle known to man or woman which I'll be freezing full of Lucozade Sport overnight before transporting to the race in a particularly stylish Ben 10 coolbox!

Sorry to hear things are proving tough for your mum still Moshi. Looking after unwell parents is incredibly hard work both emotionally and logistically. Hope you get some better news soon. Glad to hear you're thinking about next races though.

We've been looking at moving to Harpenden paws! Looks absolutely gorgeous so soon as we've sold our current place and a kidney or two we'll be right up there as well...

Welcome quenelle - good to have you join.

Good luck too badger and master - hope you enjoy it!

Happy running all

pawsnclaws · 24/06/2011 17:55

Thanks Quenelle, Harpenden is indeed lovely but there is a big premium on housing there over St Albans-a lot of the children at the dcs school live in Studham or Edlesborough/Eaton Bray so those are options too. My difficulty is that in making my life easier I could make things impossible for DH as he needs to commute into London still. In an ideal world we would like to get the boys into the Bucks grammar school catchment so it would be good to edge slightly closer that way. Berko is the other option we're looking at, as it has a decent trainline and you get a little more for your money.

I don't know Hitchin very well but have been meaning to make a pilgrimage to the outdoor pool as I'm a bit of an outdoor swimming nut. My usual haunt is Letchworth Lido - but it's a long way for a swim!

Good luck for the runners this weekend, with you cestlavie on hat wearing - whenever I put one on people tend to burst out laughing.

ThatVikRinA22 · 24/06/2011 17:56

thanks for the advice....i actually do have some diclofenac in from a when i pulled a muscle in my back...i never even thought of it!

i am having a few days off exercise until this ankle thing feels better and less twingy, then i will have to start back slowly....its so frustrating!

i just want to run in my new shoes!

DrNortherner · 24/06/2011 19:22

Good luck Masterandmargaritas, YeahThatsTheBadger and cestlavie. Did I miss anyone out? I've heard Sunday could be hot, nice for us but not for you guys! I run in a visor if it's really hot to keep the sun off my face. My hair is so thick I get sweaty in a cap. I don't feel silly -Nell McAndrew wears them Grin

Driving hope you guys have a fab break, 'see' you when you get back!

We just had a light tea of poached eggs on toast as we are doing our 10pm run tonight, which now seems a little odd to be leaving at 9.30pm to run!

Have a nice weekend everyone Smile

DebiTheScot · 24/06/2011 20:21

I just went out for a run to see if my shin hurt and it did Sad Gave it a wee while to warm up and it'd be ok for a minute then would jar again. So I headed back home & only did about 1.5 miles. And it hurts now. It's mainly the right shin but I think I can feel the left one slightly too but might be imagining that!
We're going to Scotland for the weekend (to see Kings of Leon and family) and aren't back till late Monday eve so I'll leave my running shoes, let it rest & see how it feels after wknd. It could be a needing new shoes niggle/pain. Or could it be shin splints and are they nasty?

Good luck to all the racers this weekend. Smile

N4NNY · 24/06/2011 20:22

I'm doing my first parkrun tomorrow I'm feeling very nervous about it. I'm not great with new things it's a bit hilly and I usually run on the flat but will be good to get a time and try to beat it each week.

June2009 · 24/06/2011 20:26

drno have fun tonight!

good luck to people running this weekend.

n4nny I think we all get nervous before a run, enjoy it ;)

Wheelybug · 24/06/2011 20:34

masters badger and Cestlavie - very best of luck for this weekend's races !! Look forward to the race reports.

N4nny - Hope the first park run goes well.

moshi - sorry thigns aren't better with your mum.

futurity · 24/06/2011 20:34

Popping in to say good luck to all runners this weekend...hope the heat holds off. Small run for me tomorrow as off to London to see Glee in concert Smile

EmmaBemma · 24/06/2011 21:42

Good luck to Badger, "Masters and Cestlavie*! I'll be hoping for grey skies for you, poss with a little light breeze and refreshing drizzle if that's your thing.

Two questions:

  1. see breathing, right? (!) for example, when you've just gone up a really steep uphill bit and you're recovering whilst running, basically trying to get your breath back. I instinctively find myself doing longer deep slow breaths and trying to keep them regular - is that right, or should I do faster shallower ones?

  2. earlier talk of visors has made me consider a sweat band. I have short hair and, I dunno, a really Cro-magnon forehead or something, as sweat does seem to drip right into my eyes and makes them sting. Does anyone else have this problem, and if so, what do you wear? I just mentioned to my husband about getting a sweat band and he did the "eye of the tiger" theme at me.

MrsWednesday · 24/06/2011 22:02

All the very best of luck to TheMaster, Cestlavie and Badger in your races this weekend, hope the heat isn't overwhelming and that you fly round like the supreme athletes you are. Looking forward to all the race reports (will get tissues handy for the weeping I will do whilst reading them).

Good luck in the park run N4NNY, have never done one either so can understand your nerves but I'm sure you'll be fine. From everything I've heard they sound really sociable and friendly.

Driving, have probably missed you by now but have a lovely holiday and hope you manage to squeeze in a few runs.

Moshi, is there any chance you could get meals on wheels or similar to come round to your mum? And those protein shakes (build-up?) are very good. When my mum was ill I was living 50 miles away, working and pregnant, it was a complete nightmare - you just have to do what you can and not feel guilty about the things you can't do (easier said than done I know).

Peachy, so lovely to hear the heartbeat, things are really moving on now! How many weeks are you and when's the next scan? And big congrats to MadeinDevon

Thecoo, how did your run go today? Glad you are back and hope the family stresses are not over-whelming.

DrNo, hope you avoided the late evening rain that we've had in Leeds! Still, a summer evening run will be lovely whatever the weather, especially with cake at the end.

I'm doing my long run with my sister tomorrow, heading off early for 13 miles hopefully (would love to be doing it at the speed you ran at notyummy!), although my twinge in my right thigh is back again (I am such a running hypochondriac).

Hope all the twinges and injuries clear up soon and that everyone has a lovely running weekend.

MrsWednesday · 24/06/2011 22:05

Cross-posted EmmaBemma - I think I probably do deep ones but I will have to think about it when I'm running up hills tomorrow Smile

peachsmuggler · 24/06/2011 23:25

Catch up properly tomorrow (exhausted by the tennis excitement!) but just want to say good luck to Master, badger and cestlavie, take it easy in the heat guys!

ThatVikRinA22 · 24/06/2011 23:42

forgot to say good luck to all you racing peeps! have fun!

i went out tonight and several people commented that i look like ive lost weight....i want to run again so badly!

gggrrrrrrrrr!

DrNortherner · 25/06/2011 09:15

Morning All! Hope today's racers arent too nervous. Can't wait to hear the reports.

Well only 10 turned up to do the run last night. Mrsweds sadly we did not miss the rain, it was pouring down. As we were driving to the resevoir, it was cold, wet and late and I was thinking 'what the hell am I doing?' There were 8 men and only 2 woman, the other woman was one of the elite runners and I knew I was in for a beasting......we did just over 7.5 miles in 1 hour and 1 minute, that was a social run for them, they were plodding. I was at the back nearly dieing. It was pitch black mostly and I didn't have a headtorch. The grounds was wet, muddy and slippy (2 guys fell) so much concentration was needed, and there was a few monster hills for good measure.

As I was at the back one of the veterans (he is 67) ran with me as he had a torch, he was giving me coaching points as we were going up hill. So, I kept up, the others were always about 10 paces ahead, but I kept up!

I at 3 cakes at the end Grin

As were were sitting at a picnic table in the dark and the wet a police car pulled up and asked what we were doing Grin It was gone 11pm and we were in a very sensitive area I suppose, they asked if we do it again to let them know in advance!

DrNortherner · 25/06/2011 09:16

Meant to add it's very humbling when a 67 year old runner drops back to help you Grin

EmmaBemma · 25/06/2011 11:08

Christ DrNo, that sounds horrific! You were fast though, well done.

MrsWednesday · 25/06/2011 11:22

Eeek DrNo that sounds 'challenging'! Well done for getting to the end of it - 3 cakes sounds the very least you deserved! You can count yourself one of the elite too now I reckon.

Have done my long run for the weekend, felt quite heavy-legged and a bit out of sorts all the way round, then had to get DH to come and collect me about a mile from home as my right knee was too painful to continue - hoping it's nothing too serious, but it's very sore and I'm struggling to move much.

Good luck to everyone racing, I'm going to retire to the sofa with an ice pack.

MoshiMoshi · 25/06/2011 18:19

Am loving the cro-magnon forehead comment (Emma) and comment re being humbled by a 67 year old (DrNo)! Well done on the wet dark run. I run in a headtorch when dark as it is very disorientating!

Mum been admitted with pains diagnosed as stress ulcers. In for 72 hours while I am stuck in Norfolk escorting DCs sailing. Feel torn. Arrrghh!
