a thread for runners to chat, debate, share tips, triumphs (and the occasional disaster!) - new runners particularly welcome, the only thing that's required is enthusiasm (and a pair of running shoes)

Yes badger, hat and sunnies are a necessity for this weekend's racing. I found my visor and sunnies such a relief when I ran London and I don't think it reached higher than 28 degrees.

driving - your legs will get used to speed sessions. They are to be done when keeping mileage steady as it is such a strain on the legs it is advisable to not ramp up mileage at the same time as doing intervals. A week's schedule should have a similar long run with a new speed session, or a longer long run with no speed session in it. Also if you are feeling niggles then easing back off the pace to help save the legs can help a bit.

Wheelybug · 23/06/2011 18:21

M&M - finally got round to sponsoring too although made a bit of f up. Used DH's card details so I could do gift aid and managed to not do gift aid. Sorry !

I did think that here we are being all British about the heat on sunday and there's you setting off to do it in hotter (and hillier) conditions !

peach - I didn't admit the age of my bras although she did comment that my bras generally may be feeling loser because of their age. Off to the John Lewis sale methinks. Good news on the heart beat.

peachsmuggler · 23/06/2011 18:43

Yea master and wheely lovely to hear the heartbeat. Kind of amazing to think there is another human being inside there.

Lol at your aged bras wheely, am imagining Victorian corsetry! I should really get measured as my bras are either from before I got pregnant with DD when I was a stone heavier, or when I was breastfeeding. No idea what size I am. Don't want to buy new shock absorber so will stick to current one from breastfeeding days

Now, here's a thing. Have any of you ever come across a nursing sports bra? My friends and I from powerpramming used to discuss the need for these but I have never been able to find one. Perhaps I should set up a business selling them....

drivingmisscrazy · 23/06/2011 18:45

Moshi that makes loads of sense; I wouldn't normally have done the long run today - I would have left it until sunday and run easy today and tomorrow/Sat. But I know I won't manage it on holiday, and in the heat of south of France, so wanted to get it under my belt. I think it would have been fine if I'd been following my normal schedule. And it's a lesson about sticking to the plan - yesterday should have been an easy run, and I ran it like a tempo because I felt good...so one day of intervals, then a tempo (again, all relative!) and then a long run..

Quenelle Hill...? Hill!!? There is a hill at Standalone!?!?! EEK! I shall be behind you then and attempting my first sub 60 min 10K. (previous best is 61 mins).

Badger not been back to Luton for years as don't know anyone there now. I know they built a big cinema complex thing which I think I went to once but I am not sure what else has changed. To be fair it was fine there at university..I met loads of lovely people (including my now husband!) and we got our first house dirt cheap :)

Wheelybug · 23/06/2011 20:22

Peach - I remember seeing sports bras that zipped up at the front when I was running and bf-ing. In the end I only took up running again a couple of months before I stopped bf-ing though so I just wore 2 feeding bras which more or less did the trick. My underwear isn't that ancient - all new since having stopped bf-ing dd2 so less than 2 years old (its the sports ones that predate dd2 !). Anyway, enough of my underwear.

DebiTheScot · 23/06/2011 20:39

Welcome quenelle sounds like you'll fit right in Smile

How funny would it be if Paula Radcliffe did join our thread Grin Mind you the speed moshi runs at we almost do have our own Paula.

wheely you'd better get signed up for a triathlon once you've had your swimming lessons!

I was meant to do an hour cycle this eve but didn't allow for not being able to eat till 8pm & I'm really tired (double PE cover with 55 girls running a benchball competition yesterday pushed me over the edge) and I can feel that shin niggle a wee bit and I've got exams to mark and I think that's all my excuses!

This thread really has helped my running and cycling though. It really helps with motivation. Last night I was tired but went for my run anyway as I could hear you all tell me to go and I felt better for it.

Oh and what garmin is it you've all got? My head of dept and race buddy is leaving at the end of term & she wants a garmin as her leaving present so when we were talking today I mentioned a few things I'd picked up from here & now they all think I'm an expert!

MoshiMoshi · 23/06/2011 20:52

debi - don't get the Garmin 405 as it hates getting wet and is totally unreliable when it rains. I think the 305 might be a good one if finances allow or the 205 (or am I getting them confused with Peugeots? Grin)

Entered a half in anticipation of the marathon in October. Will find latest list and paste to update.

MoshiMoshi · 23/06/2011 20:56

peach - so pleased you heard a good heartbeat today. Such a lovely and FUN part to hear their little heart beating away (do I sound broody or what?)

Thanks for asking about mum. She is not great and had the doc out again today who prescribed antibiotics and stronger painkillers. I don't think she is making the effort to eat and I feel guilty I am not living with her to look after her. My sister pops in daily as she lives ten minutes away but I am waiting until term ends so I can head down with the kids. As it is I am on call for family duties when my sister cannot step in so my next call up is next week when I have to deliver her for her follow up appointment in Oxford

pawsnclaws · 23/06/2011 21:07

Hi all, just trying to keep up with the thread! A slow 7 miles for me today, started off hot and sweaty and then the last 10 minutes it tipped it down and I got soaked, which was actually not at all unpleasant!

My dcs go to school near Luton, there are some amazing villages round there - we'd like to move nearer the school but the flight path is an issue. Some of the planes pass so low over the school I swear one day I'll see the pilot waving Smile.

This weekend is going to be hot hot hot ..... I can't get on with a hat but I do like my visor. It stops the top of my head getting sweaty but seems to keep the sun out of my eyes - though DH takes the p* as he says I look like a "laydee golfer". Other than that, just water water water. I'm sun-phobic, so sympathies.

On the bra front I once had an Ennell (sp?) - good God that thing was tight. Sort of a corset arrangement that did up with hooks and eyes at the front. It did what it said on the tin in that you got no bounce ..... but sadly I found it impossible to breathe either Wink.

June2009 · 23/06/2011 21:23

debbie I think the difference between the 305 and the 205 is just the heart monitor.
I want to get one when we come back from holiday (hopefully if I have any money left) and I'm thinking to get the 205.

mmm, there's a 5yo looking around in my cupboard downstairs, I'd better go and check it out I think!

drivingmisscrazy · 23/06/2011 21:31

I have the 205 and it's great; you can set it up for intervals, splits and possibly a whole load of other things that I haven't discovered yet. Really good value, especially if you use a running log that you can upload to directly (does sometimes crash the server though, but that might just be a mac thing)

OP posts:
futurity · 23/06/2011 21:32

I remember parking the car at the road at the end of the runway at Luton and watching the planes fly over the top of your head...everytime I thought they would land too early on my head! Wonder if that road is still open?

I have Garmin 305 and it's great (don't use heart rate monitor anymore though). Is a bit slow to pick up GPS but apart from that fine.

DebiTheScot · 23/06/2011 21:34

30 day shred arrived yesterday so I dragged my butt off the sofa and did level 1. Blimey it's going to be hard! I think I'll hurt in the morning. Could really feel it working. Need proper weights though, the beans just weren't the same!
And I only had to do the easy option for the press ups. The cooldown was hard though! I can't sit with my legs very far apart at all.

YeahThatsTheBadger · 23/06/2011 21:48

Oh moshi. I'm so sorry that your Mum isn't improving as quickly as hoped but you shouldn't feel guilty. What more can you do? You will be with her full time in a few weeks and you are doing what you can for now, from a distance.

paws My Ma works in Harpenden - lovely village. futurity I don't think that road is open anymore after 9/11 the glasgow airport thing.

I don't think I could go for a visor (sorry paws and moshi!). I think I would just laugh uncontrollably everytime I caught a glimpse of myself Grin. Didn't get a chance to go hat hunting. Dc's aren't themselves at the mo, not quite sure what's up with them. Sad

I know that I have my 5k this weekend but I'm trying to have a look at training plans for my 10k in October as right now I'm just running 5k everytime I go out and I feel a bit lost. I got Womens Running magazine when I was at the airport and it was really good actually, not too serious. Might ask for a subscription for my birthday. Oh god, that sounds so boring and OLD! Grin

ThatVikRinA22 · 23/06/2011 22:22

hi again all

i am going stir crazy with this stupid injury....do you think i could do any exercise at all - like go to the gym or do a DVD at home, or do you think i should just totally rest it? i keep putting it on ice....i darent run, i thought it was better and then ran on it, and its wasnt better obviously.

im so fed up.

pawsnclaws · 23/06/2011 22:52

Moshi sorry to hear about your mum. I struggle to get ds1 to eat properly and sometimes find it easier to get him to drink high calorie drinks like Mars chocolate milk. He just doesn't really have an appetite and finds food boring. Hope she feels better soon.

EmmaBemma · 23/06/2011 22:54

Hi Vicar - I've missed exactly what your injury is, but is swimming a possibility? I wouldn't think you could get much lower impact. That or cycling, which I've had success with when I've had a dodgy knee.

ThatVikRinA22 · 23/06/2011 23:14

moshi - smoothies and milk shakes are good aswell....sorry about your mum.

emma - i dont really know what ive done - i think ive pulled my achilles tendon or hamstring....pain at the back of my ankle, worse after ive run. i think i built up to 5k way too fast.

DH has said today he wants to run, so ive said ill do the couch to 5k with him (if it doesnt really annoy me going back to basics!)

think id better rest my leg till i cant feel it any more....at the mo it hurts to walk.

squix · 23/06/2011 23:48

chewytoffee - I am really tempted by Dundee - one of my friends is doing it ( think he's about 1.30 for a half - I have been running with him twice - I was shattered) and the course looks even more down hill than Edinburgh was. Don't think I'll be ready though - still not properly back into my training rhythm after the edinburgh half. Although I am going to stay with my dad next week which will be like a mini training camp - if I can keep up with him.

Yeay - looking forward to more race reports this weekend - good luck cestlavie , badger and themaster - hope you all have a great time.

Moshi sorry to hear that your mum isn't getting on so well.

driving - Bon vacance Grin

TheChewyToffeeMum · 24/06/2011 07:53

Vicar sounds like Achilles tendon problem. I think you do need to rest it until it does not hurt to walk then do only low-impact exercise until it feels ok to run.

Good Luck to this weekends racers. I will be trying to fit in an 11-12 miler somewhere between having to do other things - grrr.

MoshiMoshi · 24/06/2011 08:02

WISHING EVERY BIT OF GOOD LUCK TO master, cest and badger! If it is very hot make sure you revise your time targets accordingly.

drivingmisscrazy · 24/06/2011 08:22

good luck to all the weekend racers; back in about a week, to a new thread, I suspect!

OP posts:
thecoo · 24/06/2011 08:33

Vicar that sounds similar to what I've just recovered from. My physio did say swimming was ok, and she was ok with me doing cross trainer or cycling too as long as it didn't hurt. She also said to always ice afterwards even if I didn't feel anything, and to use voltarol 4x a day. This might not be appropriate for you, but thought it might help...

peaches sorry misread - listening to heartbeat is wonderful too though. I loved being pregnant (was very fussed over because of having twins) so like reading posts from those of you 'with child'.

moshi sorry about your mum - must be v hard for you as well as her.

Welcome quenelle - this is a great thread, though impossible to keep up with (in more ways than one). I'm also trying to build my mileage back up after an achilles injury a while back.

Going to try and do a 50-60 min run again today and hoping to see some improvement since last week when I was absolutely shattered.

Quite glad I'm not doing my race this weekend after all - not a fan of running in the heat either. Hope you're all ok. I shall be in South Africa, where it is currently winter, so will be missing the only sunny day this summer...

Only back middle of next week, so good luck to badger, master and cestlavie.
