a thread for runners to chat, debate, share tips, triumphs (and the occasional disaster!) - new runners particularly welcome, the only thing that's required is enthusiasm (and a pair of running shoes)

peach I hadn't taken much notice of this weekends until you mentioned it. I've just checked. Shock I'm not going to cope with that in all my gingery, pale goodness. I'm going to fry, even with factor 50. Will I just need to plaster on the suncream and make sure i'm well hydrated?
Starting to panic a little...

EmmaBemma · 23/06/2011 09:50

hello runners! Just back from my week away to see my American friend get wed, had lots of fun but completely failed to do any running at all. In my defence, I never really got over the jetlag (West coast, 8 hours behind us) and was helping out with pre-wedding chores a lot so I just never felt like it at the right time. Was delighted to see my husband and two little girls at Glasgow airport yesterday.

4 1/2 quite gentle miles this morning. Not as hard as I feared it'd be after a week and a half of no activity, plus the break seems to have cured my slightly niggly right shin. Bonus! Now to officially sign up for the Glasgow half - early bird rates end today.

cestlavie · 23/06/2011 10:06

Hi peach, yup, just checked and it's forecast to be 27 degrees in Bedford (nearest town) and clear, sunny, hot skies. Should make for an interesting half marathon - least I'll be topping up my tan if nothing else!

Have you got a race as well this weekend badger?

Since Louise has done it I will just remind you of my lower post, my charity's got 8 British 10k places left should you desire.

Although of course the longer one's running career the higher risk of sponsor fatigue and 20+ years of my working in fundraising has exhausted pretty much all my friends and family.

Still no pain today, dying to run but must be sensible. Have swum instead.

vicar how's your twinge?

YeahThatsTheBadger · 23/06/2011 11:55

I am cest. It's RFL 5k in Luton (or, more accurately, Lu'on!) I don't do well in the heat on a normal day so I'm beginning to dread this now.

cestlavie · 23/06/2011 12:04

Good luck badger.

Just had this slightly worrying response back from the race organisers on my half in response to me asking if there is any shade. Eeek!

"It is very very exposed - I did the race in 30+ heat in 2005 and it was a real test. On the other hand, we do have lots of water and lovely marshals. Just make sure you are well hydrated on Saturday and Sunday morning...and aim to go out easier rather than harder on the first lap."

I hate heat as well (despite having the complexion for it!) Key is to make sure you're very well hydrated beforehand, carry fluid with you and take on water around the course....

futurity · 23/06/2011 12:21

Good luck all runners this weekend..hope it doesn't get too hot for you. I know Luton well..I went to university there!

June2009 · 23/06/2011 12:50

you guys seem keen on running
LOL
Only cause it's a good excuse to buy a garmin ;)

I heard the british heart foundation advertising for their next half marathon on the radio yesterday.

I must focus on the (good) feeling after my 10k run yesterday, I want to try 15k next week, slow pace.
I bumped into my mate who is doing the half with me very briefly but forgot to ask her if she would like to run with me sometime.
She did a 10k 3 weeks ago and has only run once since so I feel all smug about having started on my "plan" :D
She also said that just like me she feels like running is not for her ;)

drivingmisscrazy · 23/06/2011 12:56

a quick wave and then off to pick up DD. I think I am a serious running nerd now because I don't want to put my precious Garmin in the checked baggage in case it gets lost! how sad is that? But I am willing to put DD's blanket in there - meanie mummy!

Slogged out 10 miles this morning - it was warm and really felt the last 2 days of (for me) hard running in my legs. Two days off now due to travelling, and then an easy run on Sunday in the mediterranean sun...

OP posts:
drivingmisscrazy · 23/06/2011 13:19

which is a roundabout way of saying that I am struggling with my long runs now that I have introduced some speedwork. Will this resolve itself in due course? just keep at it, I guess.

OP posts:
peachsmuggler · 23/06/2011 14:17

Patience fishie, patience!

Badger, am sure you'll be fine. Plenty of water and take it nice and easy if you feel too hot. Don't know if you do normally, but a hat would be a good idea.

cestlavie, I don't envy you running 13 miles this Sunday. Am sure you'll be sensible. I remember doing the British 10k in 30+ degree heat and seeing plenty of big strong boys dropping like flies!

Welcome back emma, shame you never had a chance to run but sounds like fun anyway.

Driving, I think increasing the intensity of your other runs is bound to affect your long run to begin with. As your fitness improves with the speedwork you'll feel the benefit in your long runs. Are you definitely running your long runs slow enough? Living your pfb reaction to your Garmin btw Grin

Wheelybug · 23/06/2011 14:21

Argh just lost a huge post (you'll be pleased to hear !).

But to report - I have a new sports bra and i had gone down a cup as well as wearing ancient ones, so it was truly terrible and i am hanging my head in shame.

Also, enquired about stroke improvement lessons for swimming and can start in September so hopefully will soon be able to front crawl and not swim like an old lady who doesn't wnat to get her hair wet.

Thanks for the speed interval info sciencebint - I agree variety is the key for surviving treadmill running. That and bloodymindedness. 5 miles today on the treadmill and I did a fairly easy run because I didn't want to stress my niggly ankle too much and it was quite dull. Not helped by having to watch location x3 as my ipod ran out of battery. I like location etc but isn't conducive to running.

Sorry the 10K wasn't as good as you'd hoped science but at least you can go for it in the half.

I hope those running this weekend aren't getting too freaked out by the possible heat (I say possible because its hard to imagine it won't be pouring with rain and miserable like most weekends lately). I will have to do my longer run on Sunday so I will be sort of joining you in your misery but at least I can cut short if necessary (although determined to do the run at my parents I was going to do a few weeks back, along cliffs to the marina).

Nice to see you thecoo - also missing in action (or maybe inaction) is doyouthink. Where are ya ?

Congrats devon !

drivingmisscrazy · 23/06/2011 14:21

peach oh yeah, they're definitely slow enough Blush

Quenelle · 23/06/2011 14:40

Hello

I've just started running again. I used to be quite keen, 10ks mostly, but stopped when I had a couple of scares in early pregnancy.

Aaanyway, I want to get back to doing it regularly. I have managed to get out three times this week, only doing 20 minute plods but trying to build up sensibly. I am cautiously setting my sights on the Standalone 10k in October. I did it in 2007 and pulled out on the day in 2008 because I was 4 weeks pregnant.

I've come to say hi because I need help staying motivated. It's hard when DS has got me up at stupid o'clock and I'm barely keeping my eyes open at my desk. Nevertheless, I've been out in my lunch hour twice this week and once on Sunday afternoon so I'm tentatively calling myself a runner again.

drivingmisscrazy · 23/06/2011 14:47

hello Quenelle - you sound like a runner to me! There are quite a few of us re-building mileage. I know what you mean about the sleep thing, but I've found that whilst it impacts negatively on pace (being knackered) it does have a good effect on mood and energy, not least because you are proud to have got out there at all.

A 10k in Oct sounds perfect - you will find that your fitness comes back reasonably fast...

OP posts:
YeahThatsTheBadger · 23/06/2011 14:49

I might have to go and get a hat then, although I avoid wearing baseball caps and the like cos I look like a knob. Have a big beacon red face to match my beacon of ginger hair, or look like a knob??...decisions, decisions. Hmm

Welcome Quenelle! This is a very supportive thread so you have come to the right place.

Glad you finally got the sports bra sorted Wheely

Wheelybug · 23/06/2011 14:51

Hi Quenelle - you're in the right place ! There's quite a few of us that run on little sleep so we know how you feel. I have to say, I think being fit and running actually helps me cope with very little sleep. I know that if I feel terrible on the mornings I am due to run, I feel much better after I have. Its hard to remember that sometimes though. Welcome !

futurity · 23/06/2011 15:56

Welcome Quenelle...sounds like you are building back up perfecty. I am doing the Standalone 10k this year at last...have wanted to do it for a while but it always clashed with something or I was too late to enter. Have a half marathon the week after it so won't be going crazy but am looking forward to it Smile

Quenelle · 23/06/2011 16:06

Hello all. Thanks for the kind welcome. I do actually feel better for my run today, despite somewhat heavy legs.

Sorry so many of you are also functioning on little sleep. Although what should I expect from a running fred on MN? Grin

futurity you'll recognise me at Standalone, I'll be the one lurking at the top of the hill, furthest from the start line. Although I will aim to do sub 60 mins. I just squeaked it in 2007 with 59 mins. (Paula Radcliffe I am not.)

MoshiMoshi · 23/06/2011 16:06

Congrats to devon and welcome to quenelle. If you voice your commitment it is as good as having mentally committed to doing it. So stick around and share your training for your 10K with us here.

12 miles today which were at amble pace and then I bumped into an old running friend and shared a few miles with her and caught up with her news. After she turned round I then bumped into a neighbour and did the final few miles with him. My pace was around 8:30-9:00m/m as I am trying to keep things slow to avoid exacerbating any injuries and save my legs for the harder sessions, but when I got home I realised I had run 7:30m/m for the last two miles and not noticed it as I was so busy chatting away. Hopefully it means I am fitter than I thought I was. Smile

Quenelle · 23/06/2011 16:15

Hi Moshi. Great sentiment, thanks for that.

I've just read up the thread, congrats madeindevon. You're definitely in the best shape to be starting off with.

YeahThatsTheBadger · 23/06/2011 16:18

futurity not sure if you've been back to Luton recently but it's changed a lot over the last few years. My mum and dad, and most of my school friends still live there so I'm back quite often. Although I wouldn't choose to live there. Smile My mum and dad live right under the flight path-don't know how they put up with it!

Right, I'm off to buy a hat!

peachsmuggler · 23/06/2011 17:49

I run. I do running. I'm a runner. I like that quenelle!! Think we should incorporate that mantra into our next thread title! Welcome!

badger have you not heard, the knob look is really in this season, you will look fabulous darling. Mwah! Grin

Hope the new bra helps wheely, am sure it will. Did the assistant shake their head at your secret bra shame???

Moshi, that sounds like a lovely, sociable run. How's your mum doing this week?

Heard heartbeat at midwife appointment this afternoon. DD seemed quite taken with it!

Have finally sponsored you Master, seems like a great cause, well done!

Themasterandmargaritas · 23/06/2011 17:56

Badger and c'est, we shall be running in the heat and sun together. Grin Top tips, wear a lightweight hat, drink little and often, eat lots of jelly babies/energy gels for replacement salts, pour water over your head and at the end make sure you have a dioralyte/ORS. Good luck, we can do it!

Welcome quenelle.

How was the heartbeat peachy? It's always amazing to hear...

Ooo and congrats MID that's lovely news.

Right, I have a car to pack. Next post will be a sitrep from the bush. Grin
