a thread for runners to chat, debate, share tips, triumphs (and the occasional disaster!) - new runners particularly welcome, the only thing that's required is enthusiasm (and a pair of running shoes)

Running with tea and cake and lanterns IS partying isn't it???

MoshiMoshi · 22/06/2011 18:18

DrNo's Friday night sounds like a fantastic evening! The people who think otherwise have NO idea how to have a good time. What better way to party and wake up feeling wonderful?

futurity · 22/06/2011 18:41

Wise words Moshi. I was determined on my training for the half not to get injured or ill (when I trained for my last half 1 1/2 years ago I over did it and got ill the week before and couldn't do the run). I was successful in managing this non illness last time and will try again for this next one. I also love my Asics...they are perfect for me and I now have a few years collection in my wardrobe!

drivingmisscrazy · 22/06/2011 18:41

cestlavie sorry about niggles - I find that (as Moshi says) that running injury free is actually one of my key goals. And so far, I've managed it this year! It's a question of finding the sweet spot, pace-wise. I just did 6k before picking DP and DD up, and it was just great - knocked a good 25 seconds off my easy pace (although I'd be lying if I said it was all easy pace!). I even passed another runner! (futurity you will know what sweet bliss this is - I almost never pass someone who is actually, you know, running).

+10% of weekly mileage would be absolute tops - it would soon mount up. I usually go with about 5%, but consolidating or dropping back every 3 weeks or so, when I'm building mileage.

Social run sounds great. Am thinking of starting an informal runners' group of neighbours - there are at least 5 or 6 of us who run, none of us very seriously. Might be a nice way to bash out a few gentle miles.

Yes, poor DP :( she is having hell and all with her digestion this time around (and isn't a fan of stinky cheese - but wine, that's another issue altogether). I tend not to drink a lot when she's up the duff as it's just not much fun.

DD all excited about the aeroplane (which might actually be a helicopter :o). Very cute. I can't wait. Planning 2-3 very easy runs if I can get up early enough to avoid the heat - but this was a week off that I factored into my HM plan...

oh, also, someone will have to take on the onerous task of cutting and pasting the most up-to-date race list and thinking of some witty title (I'd suggest keeping the Runners United part so that irregular posters can still come home to us :)), as there is no way that you lot will not talk your way to the end of the thread in my absence...

I like cake and running in the same sentence. Smile

C'est, sorry to hear about your strain, I hope the ice pays off, I have become a little paranoid about pushing it this week so just did a 5k tonight, I may do the same tomorrow, then it's a four hour drive upcountry for a night of camping.

Peachy, weather forecasts in this country consist of looking out of the window and just checking that the sun is still there. It's going to be hot, hot, hot. Grin

Driving have a fabulous holiday, you can do some gorgeous runs down there.

Welcome newbies. Smile

peachsmuggler · 22/06/2011 19:08

Grin Master. I do sometimes forget that the rest of the world is not as weather obsessed as us Brits, or as much as me anyway!! I'll get on the 'puter and sponsor you later! Very excited for you.

Hope you get some nice, not too hot, runs down there Driving. I stood in front of the stinky cheese counter today with my eyes popping out. Got midwife tomorrow so hoping to get to hear the heartbeat. Feeling plenty of movement now but hearing heartbeat is always lovely.

drivingmisscrazy · 22/06/2011 19:28

DP heard heartbeat at her checkup earlier this week :) the baby 'flits' as DP puts it so eloquently :o

runners I am so happy! 3 x 6 mins with walks between and NO PAIN.

dr no sounds such a lovely event. although maybe I might favour a glass of cava and a bit of cheese.

one of my team is just about to qualify as an osteopath (fingers crossed and then stretched properly) so I can ask him questions if you have any. alas he says no to office osteopathy, unprofessional. maybe we'll wear him down.

madeindevon2 · 22/06/2011 20:49

can i ask whether you still run when pregnant? is it ok? i guess half marathons prob not advisable but a say 10-15 miles a week ok>??

drivingmisscrazy · 22/06/2011 20:49

fishie - great stuff! pain free running is what we all aspire to.

OP posts:
peachsmuggler · 22/06/2011 20:59

Good stuff fishie!

madeindevon, I am running snd pregnant! (she says having not run in over 2 weeks!). General rule is only to keep running if you have been doing so far a while and to take it easy and listen to your body. How far gone are you?

notyummy · 22/06/2011 20:59

Madein- I think the usual answer is 'if you feel like it and medically you can.' I ran regularly up to 10k at a time up until i was 6 months pregnant. After that I walked a lot, Inc uphill on the treadmill, and also used the crosstrainer and bike. I continued modified circuits plus a pregnancy yoga DVD.

DebiTheScot · 22/06/2011 22:13

I think all your niggles are catching. I did a '30 minute at race pace' run tonight and had a bit of pain on the left side of my right shin. I put ice on it when I got home and hopefully it'll be ok tomorrow.

madeindevon2 · 22/06/2011 22:15

Very early. 5.5 weeks. Wanna keep running tho. But don't want to overdo it. Did a half marathon a few weeks ago. Feel fittest been in years tbh.

YeahThatsTheBadger · 22/06/2011 22:17

DrNo that sounds great! Your work colleagues don't know what cool is Smile

Have a lovely holiday driving

Good luck Master! Don't think we're friends on fb-could you (or someone else) let me know your initials please?

YeahThatsTheBadger · 22/06/2011 22:20

And congratulations Madein. Wonderful news. Grin

drivingmisscrazy · 22/06/2011 22:23

DrNo - it sounds like a great way to spend a Friday night - all the ingredients to make it great fun

Driving - have a great holiday, I hope you all have a lovely time

fishie - hurrah - no niggles

madein - congratulations

30 day shred has arrived - eek - not been brave enough to put it on yet!

peachsmuggler · 22/06/2011 22:53

Congrats madeindevon!! it is great to start off a pregnancy from a position of fitness so hopefully you can retain at least some of this. I had great intentions to run through this pregnancy but the nausea and fatigue has meant my running has been sporadic at best. However if you feel fine, go for it!

T'is niggle central around here Debi! hope the shin is ok tomorrow!

cestlavie · 23/06/2011 07:18

Very exciting about the holiday *driving! Enjoy!

Good luck with your scan peach. Sounds like it might be a bit of a wriggler/ runner?!

Good to see you again thecoo. Hope it's nothing too hectic getting in the way of running for you. 'Tis going to be a hot one this weekend so probably best enjoying the day with a nice cold drink in the garden anyway?

fishie - hurrah on the pain free run!

themaster - sounds gorgeous. Am already wondering whether a really light 5K jog might be okay on Friday evening but probably getting ahead of myself there. Love the idea of the camping!

TheChewyToffeeMum · 23/06/2011 07:56

Thank squix the knees are fine so still on course for Dundee 1/2. Are you doing it too?? Go on, you know you want to.

Has anyone else suffered sore inner thighs after running? I did 5 miles with quite steep hills last night (Yes - I know I said I was going to avoid hills but they are right outside my door!) and then sat down to knit for an hour or so. When I got up I was walking like I had been on a horse all day. New to me.

In the last year I have washed my mobile phone twice and my car keys twice (keys survived, phone didn't). If I had a garmin I am sure it would have been victim too.

thecoo · 23/06/2011 08:23

Thanks cestlavie - glad someone noticed I was gone Wink. Sorry to hear about your injury, but hopefully you'll be running again by Sunday. I wish I'd been sensible enough to stop running and see a physio when my niggle first started, so I didn't end up being unable to run for weeks and weeks.

My run was scuppered yesterday. Was planning a 30 minute interval session, but after 15 minutes I remembered my boys asked me to pick them up from school (they normally walk home) so had to rush straight there, all sweaty and disgusting. My own fault for being disorganised, but then they were 30 minutes late getting back from a field trip they'd been on so I had to stand around like that the whole time - and knowing that I could have finished my run after all. Grrr.

Have decided I need to commit to some more strength training type exercise in between my running - to hopefully prevent injuries and also tone up some wobbly bits. Have been eyeing the 30 day Shred on Amazon so let me know how it goes squix!

How did the scan go peachsmuggler?

peachsmuggler · 23/06/2011 08:24

Just seen the forecast for London on Sunday cestlavie Shock. Hope it is looking less gnarly for Colworth

Chewy. Can you be absolutely sure that it wasn't caused by the knitting? Seriously though, were they much steeper hills than usual? Could be that it was a much more intense workout than you think? Do they feel ok today?

DD has her visit to the playgroup she is starting in September this morning. Eek! Hope she likes it.

peachsmuggler · 23/06/2011 08:26

Hi thecoo, what a pain, sod's law eh??

Not a scan today, just midwife with hopefully Doppler in hand. T'is the afternoon.
