a thread for runners to chat, debate, share tips, triumphs (and the occasional disaster!) - new runners particularly welcome, the only thing that's required is enthusiasm (and a pair of running shoes)

That's clever, how do you do that note thingy?

I'm glad you went out Driving, you know what, after I have picked up the dc I am going to go out too, thanks to you.

drivingmisscrazy · 17/06/2011 13:22

yep, mandM sometimes you just have to go - even if your expectations are low!

You can do notes if you go to your profile page and click on 'notes' on the left hand side underneath your pic. I use them occasionally to share recipes and the like...

hope you have a good run later on

OP posts:
fishie · 17/06/2011 13:55

hello again. vicar i got stuck at 6k for AAGES just keep at it. run more often than you don't and do more long and slow than short and fast was how I got to 10k. But I'm naturally better at long and slow, if you are other way round do that.

Now then runners, my injury. It is my peroneal tendon and osteopath has said I am ok to run. I've only tried twice, done 10 and 15 minutes. But it hurts after five minutes, although not badly enough to stop running. I've been off for five weeks now so would be starting gently anyway. Random osteopath in the office (who hasn't treated it) says rest it but I am wondering if its one of those which gets better with a bit of gentle work and I should persist. Anyone had it?

DebiTheScot · 17/06/2011 14:10

good idea making the note thing. I started writing a list but got muddled! Mine is easy.

squix I run in the evening usually. I find it much easier and can't run before breakfast at all. I usually eat with the kids at 5.30 6ish then go out as soon as they are in bed at 7.30, 8ish.

My legs feel a bit achey today so yesterday's sprints were obviously good for me. Rest day today, mainly because I'm going out this evening. Then I haven't given myself another rest day until next weekend as we're going to Edinburgh for the weekend to see Kings of Leon.

drivingmisscrazy · 17/06/2011 14:12

I will take the list down in a couple of days to protect privacy - my friends on fb will see 'running' and, erm, run, but that's not the point.

OP posts:
squix · 17/06/2011 14:21

Thanks driving - have been on and requested friends with those on the list and one or two more who look like they are on here. I have probably doubled my friends list! I might actually start using it now!

Thanks Debi - oh and enjoy Kings of Leon - it will be fab - is it at Murrayfield?

peachsmuggler · 17/06/2011 15:51

Squix, have just accepted your friend request!

Themasterandmargaritas · 17/06/2011 16:05

Just back from my 10k, hills, humidity and 26 degrees made it a bit of a slow one, but I got a lot of encouragement from a fellow Kenyan runner who zipped up the big hill then stopped and encouraged me up it, we then chatted whilst running along before he zoomed off in full shell suit. Grin

drivingmisscrazy · 17/06/2011 16:24

mandm - that sounds pretty amazing! Occasionally I see runners out in warm weather in layers and hats and all sorts, and I often wonder why? Are they trying to sweat off extra fat (I assume not a problem for your fellow speedster there!), or just came out over-dressed? I usually do the opposite - unless it is actually arctic, just shorts and top (or leggings in winter). I did this winter just gone once go out in 4 layers though!

OP posts:
Themasterandmargaritas · 17/06/2011 16:37

This is 'cold' season here in Kenya so they all go out with lots of layers, actually now the sun has gone down I'm feeling pretty chilly! He did have sweat pouring off him mind.

They wrap up small babies here in layers, hats and blankets. They were horrified when I would let my newborns kick around in next to nothing. Grin Interestingly, neither the Kenyan babies nor my little european babies suffered as a result. Could make for an interesting study?

colette · 17/06/2011 16:56

Do you mind if I ask you experienced runners a question please Smile ?
I have been doing the couch to 5k and made it to week 7. I had had hip pain from about week 5 which got so much worse even walking upstairs was reallly painful. GP thinks it is 'burstitis' and advised I should not run for about 6 weeks and take Ibrufen. Advised swimming ( great but can't fit this in as easily ) or cycling ( like it but am a bit too wary on roads and again so much more difficult to fit in )

Has anyone had this and if so how long did it last ? I don't want to give up but am very wary and annoyed that after 6 weeks I will be back to the beginning .
I walked for about 30 minutes the other day and my hip felt slightly sore after which is really frustrating. Also my wasist is expanding and it has only been 2 weeks !
thanks

N4NNY · 17/06/2011 17:31

Just bad a really good hour long run in the rain no idea how far it was because I had a call and a text on my phone which seemed to have stopped my phone tracking me. Feel better about running again today

pawsnclaws · 17/06/2011 18:40

Hi all, hope you're well - have been mega-busy with mostly school stuff so no time to catch up for over a week. I did however see DrNo's ridiculously fast time, so massive congrats on that!

Ds2's sports day today was threatening to be a washout, but the rain just about held off. Sadly ds2 is very unco-ordinated, so the start of the year 2 sack race had to be delayed while two teachers had to help him into the sack. The race itself was hilarious, he fell over at least three times and flailed helplessly on the grass before being picked up and put back in his sack and virtually carried to the finish line.

Gotta go as short on time, but I'm marshalling the Dash for Dad on Sunday so looking forward to that. If you hear reports that an inexperienced marshal managed to send runners back on a second lap/into a lake/the wrong way round the course, you'lll know who to blame .........

futurity · 17/06/2011 19:27

Sorry Colette..not had experience of this..hope others can help. x

peachsmuggler · 17/06/2011 19:35

Well done for getting out there driving, it really is the best medicine for the running blues.

squix, what a great present from your dad! When running in the evening I go as soon as DP gets in from work which is 6.15ish, and always before evening meal. Love the cake BTW, you are very talented!!

fishie and collette, sympathies about the injuries, am afriad am not familiar with either. Hopefully someone will come along who can help.

Debi can you send me a friend request on FB? Am on driving's list. Can't send you one as on iPhone and doesn't seem to be a way....

Your DS sounds adorable. Can't wait for school sports day madness when DD gets there. Enjoy marshalling at the DFDs. Don't go mad on all the power now...Wink

Right, I must away as meeting my sibs for a Ruby Murray!

drivingmisscrazy · 18/06/2011 01:25

collette - welcome. I don't know much about hip bursitis, but it is an inflammation of tissue (which is why ibuprofen was suggested); this suggests that it's a gait issue (e.g. you are putting more pressure on one hip than the other or something) so I'd suggest that you see a qualified physio before doing anything more. It may be that you need to strengthen particular muscles, or that you need specific shoes. It's something you need proper advice for - it's clearly related to your running, so the solution will be something to do with your running. You can wait for it to go away, but I think it will come back again - as you've discovered.

Good luck with it - what a pain (literally)

drivingmisscrazy · 18/06/2011 08:41

was out last night but found out that the sister of a good friend of mine (I know the sister well too) has Stage IV cervical cancer - the prognosis is not good. So I just wanted to say to you all, please have a smear test if you are due one (I am); it's a small thing, we often neglect it, but it might just save your life.

hope all running is going well today - I might venture out for an easy trot later on...

OP posts:
fishie · 18/06/2011 08:54

driving that is terrible. so sorry. totally with you on the smears

colette look up illiotibial band syndrome - it might be starting in your hip? it is a common injury, I've had it. agree that it is well worth going to osteopath or physio. Pilates helped me get over it although I can't get to classes any more, they moved. The consequent tendon injury has taught me it is a very bad idea to only run, have added swimming back in and will keep it up.

five weeks now. I am going MENTAL. terribly grumpy. the swimming pool roof is being replaced so swims are very limited.

£5 off shock absorbers for the naughty old bra wearers.

DebiTheScot · 18/06/2011 09:23

squix yes KoL is at Murrayfield, should be really good. White Lies are supporting them & I really like them too.

peach have sent you request (from iPhone Grin)

M&M I love that the speedy man encouraged you up the hill, bet that wouldn't happen in the UK. I've sent you a fb request too.

Oh no your poor friend driving, that's so sad. I assume the doc will tell me when next smear is due, think last one was about 2 years ago.

peachsmuggler · 18/06/2011 11:46

Have accepted you Debi! Must get finger out and work out how to send requests from iPhone!!!

Driving, how terrible about your friend's sister. Just so sad. Am very grateful that DD will get the vaccine when she is at school.

colette · 18/06/2011 12:04

Thanks for the response- drivingmisscrazy , I think I will go amd see a physio , referral is through GP and will take a while . Sorry to hear about your friend's sister - that's awful ..

fishie will look up illiotibial band syndrome, is cycling any good for you ? I may have to get braver about roads .

pawsnclaws · 18/06/2011 12:45

Hello, have accepted two new friends Smile.

driving how awful. I lost a lovely friend to breast cancer just before Christmas. She left a husband and two children aged 7 and 10 months. Words can't describe how devastating and unfair cancer is - but there is always hope. I hope your friend's sister is one of the lucky ones. I keep up to date with smears, they're fine IME - all over in a few seconds, and I've been very lucky with the nurses at our surgery, they really know what they're doing Smile.

Had a nice run with a friend this morning, am seeing her tonight for another friend's fancy dress 40th. After much deliberation, we're going as the Pink Ladies from Grease .... complete with pink wigs. My poor DH has been persuaded to go as Kenickie. Will post the piccies on FB!

pawsnclaws · 18/06/2011 12:47

Oh colette I had a brief issue with Illiotal Band on the right side - not so much pain, more I could feel it twanging when I ran! Some stretches sorted it for me, but I think pain is a different issue - definitely one for the physio.

Themasterandmargaritas · 18/06/2011 13:24

driving Sad.

Debi you're ^exactly* 10 years younger than me, you whippersnapper you. Smile

I did a recovery 5 miles this morning and it was quite chilly for once (about 16 degrees). And I bought jelly babies and vaseline ready for the off on friday. I wonder how I have managed to do six half marathons without them?

Collette my hip started twingeing last year after 2 years of running. I changed my shoes and did some strengthening exercises and for the last 3 months it has been fine. Driving's advice sounds spot on to me, especially as you have just started.

drivingmisscrazy · 18/06/2011 14:10

I find myself feeling irrationally angry with her, because it's a slow growing cancer and eminently treatable if caught early. She must have not had a smear test for at least 10 years...

DP and I lost a friend to breast cancer in 2003 (A Very Bad Year); she was 34 :( Brutal.

Not sure whether I'll go out today or not - I'm tired - and clearly my drinking days are done...I had to stay out longer than I wanted so am feeling a bit feeble. But on the other hand, an easy 5k or so probably won't hurt.
