a thread for runners to chat, debate, share tips, triumphs (and the occasional disaster!) - new runners particularly welcome, the only thing that's required is enthusiasm (and a pair of running shoes)

peach - thankyou Smile but I had very easy to follow instructions to follow from here www.howdini.com/howdini-video-7075975.html. DD loves watching the cake decorating - the videos are really easy - if I can do it anyone can - just takes a bit of patience. There are quite a few on there that look quite straightforward - DD has a friend coming this afternoon and we are doing the Easter bunny cake. Mind you, I still haven't told DD that I had to cut barbie's legs off to fit in the cake. Blush

Sad driving that's very sad. I am up to date with my smears but need to start doing things like checking my breasts more regularly.

debi that will be ace Grin hope the weather will be better than this weekend. We are travelling to see some music as well in a couple of weeks - down to see Flaming Lips at the Eden project - dad lives in Devon so we're going to stay with him fir a long weekend.

Easy steady paced 4 miles in the wet this morning while DD at ballet this - ave at 9:25. have finally shaken off soreness from military fitness. Decided I'll struggle to fit in a class but as I need to do some conditioning work I've bought the 30 day shread video, seems to be popular and I should be able to fit it in on non running days too.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend Smile

Have finally been out this morning - did the parkrun (5k). Felt terrible though - legs really heavy and thought I was struggling to get round. However did it in 24m 58s, and was pleased with that given how bad I felt as was only 13s off my PB. It always takes a few hours for the result to come through, and as I don't (yet!) have a Garmin I was unsure how I had done. DH was out so I sent him a text saying "rubbish run" and he phoned back which really cheered me up (weird what a difference a phonecall can make).

Not sure why I felt rough, unless burning too much (nearly) midnight oil. Also awake for a while in the early hours of this morning, listening to the rain hammering on the window. Pleased that we are having rain, though DS2 away camping with scouts so was fretting about him!

Sun is out at the moment, question is shall I hang the washing out and risk a soaking?!

driving sorry you have sad news, I get the gist, did not want you to think that I was ignoring it but your post now seems to have gone blank.

sfxmum · 18/06/2011 15:01

Driving I am so sorry that cancer killed my mother in 1984 I am evangelical about smears and HPV testing. It is horribleSad

Will read properly later was just popping in to see if anyone sent FB request initials BB & LD? bit lost

No running for me today Richmond Park tomorrow
Went to local fete on the Green and got soaked not good for my scratchy throat
Have any of you had a look at recent Runners world? They seem to be eavesdropping on this thread Wink

drivingmisscrazy · 18/06/2011 16:32

sfxmum so sorry to hear that. DP's sister also had in in 2003, but had a full hysterectomy and is fine (although I think having a hysterectomy at the age of 35 messed her right up; and she was messed up to start with).

On a happier note, just got to 1000km of running for this year - target is 2000, so I'm happy to have made it before the halfway point of the year. July and August will be fairly heavy running months for me, and then we'll see after that. Starting to get excited about holiday to France now - only a week away.

ibbydibby pretty good time! sometimes there's no rhyme or reason as to how running feels, nor any correlation to your time...a mystery

herecomesthesciencebint good luck! I usually aim for 25-30, more coming up to a race...I usually manage about 25.

Goodluck - herecomesthesciencebint what a great time to have a race - 6pm on a Saturday evening.

Good luck herecomes!

ThatVikRinA22 · 18/06/2011 17:51

i got out today despite telling myself i wouldnt run until i got new shoes....going for gait analysis and shoes next week.

i wish my 5k's were easy runs though! joining running club on weds but i hope they wont laugh me out of the door....
im a bit cross because my 5k today felt fine, i was doing really well, then stopped to take a breather after 25 mins then my tendon at the back of my ankle felt really tender so i had to walk the rest, i tried to pick it up again but my ankle just hurt so i thought id best stop.....i really should go back to a couch to 5k running programme shouldnt i....i just didnt want to feel like i was going backwards, could that tendon thing just my knackered old cheapo shoes do you think?

at work tonight so might not be able to get back before this thread has moved on at 100miles an hour...

drivingmisscrazy · 18/06/2011 17:57

vicar could easily be knackered shoes; in the meantime put a 500ml bottle filled with water (not right to the top) in the freezer and when it's frozen roll it up and down the achilles - don't apply pressure, but hold it on the tender spots. This can be a pesky one, so the sooner the better with the new shoes...

sfxmum you must have been very young when your mum died (just did the sums in my head); that's so tough

Just popping back quickly to report that Shock Absorbers are reduced in Debenhams, various prices. I managed to get one for £15.

Good luck for tonight herecomesthesciencebint in fact you must be running now. Sun is shining here at the moment..

MrsWednesday · 18/06/2011 18:33

Good luck in the race science, hope you're flying round at this very moment!

I usually aim for around 20 - 25 miles a week - currently running home from work twice a week (5 miles) then a long run on a weekend, with one session of pilates on a Saturday morning. It's not enough to shift my belly though, and my weight has crept up over the last few years. I know I need to do some more cross-training but I just don't know how to fit it in. Exercise DVD perhaps?

Can't remember who mentioned it further down the thread, but I have trained for half marathons by just doing 3 runs a week, and my marathon training never got beyond 3 either, so it's definitely do-able (although not if you want to reach Moshi speed Grin)

Timely reminder about smear test driving, had mine on Thursday and it's definitely the sort of thing that is easy to put off. Very sorry about your friend's sister.

Sympathies about the twinging tendons - would definitely agree that icing is the way forward. Also make sure you do plenty of stretches, something I've been neglecting recently (and have ended up with a sore achilles again).

I'll be doing my long run tomorrow, early start as DH has got to work. Happy running all and apologies for rubbish attempt at a catch-up - if I miss a few days posting it's really hard to keep track.

Themasterandmargaritas · 18/06/2011 18:41

Oooo good luck herecomes. I hope it was fun. Smile

cestlavie · 18/06/2011 21:15

Good luck sciencebint... slightly belatedly! Hope you're currently enjoying a well earned drink somewhere. 10K's are the hardest in many ways, especially judging the right pace, and as for hilly ones...

Sorry to hear about your friend drivingmiss. Doesn't sound too great but really hope it works out okay for her. Always makes you appreciate your own health that bit more, and take it less for granted.

On a chirpier note, was away with work at the end of last week in the New Forest and managed a run through the forest and hills early Friday morning. Absolutely stunning, especially for someone used to running in and around London traffic. My Runmeter didn't work so just ran for 2 hours through woodlands and heathlands without a little voice in my ear badgering me about time and pace and distance... So refreshing. Am always thinking about times and splits so just gorgeous to run for the sheer hell of it.

Interesting to hear by the way, how many people seem to find time to go running with their partners. How does that work and who looks after the children? Would love to think about that but can't see it would be worth getting a babysitter round to do it!

Anyways, happy evening and running all!

PS. Welcome vicar and colette!

ThatVikRinA22 · 19/06/2011 08:28

oooohhhhh owwwwww....limping today. doing the water bottle thing but am hoping this doesnt mean i cant run on weds as thats when im meant to be going to the club....Sad

drivingmisscrazy · 19/06/2011 11:35

cestlavie that sounds like the perfect run; given that I am never going to be fast I do sometimes wonder if I tend to lose sight of why I run?

Just did a rather poor 9 miles - a lot of stopping and starting, mainly due to ongoing tummy bug which, well, let's say, manifested itself Blush Lovely sunny day, but windy, took longer than I would ideally like. But then I haven't done a long run since the end of May.

A question for the serious runners: I'm about to go into that HM schedule I linked to (the Runner's World 10 week one), and I wondered about the race-sim runs - e.g. 6 miles easy, 3 miles at slightly under goal race pace - does that mean 1 x 3, or 3 x 1? There's quite a difference! Thanks

OP posts:
DebiTheScot · 19/06/2011 14:24

driving don't feel down about not being the fastest runner in the world. You can run much further than some of us on here which means much much further than most people.

cestlavie I don't know how couples who both do exercise find the time either. My dh plays football once a week so I have to be back by 8.45 that night to let him go out but apart from that I can go whenever(ish).

I sometimes feel guilty about running or cycling at the weekend but dh seems happy as long as he gets to see me in the shower after! Grin

Did a 50 min cycle yesterday with a couple of hard, into the wind bits & one bit into horizontal monsoon like rain.
And have done a 5.4 mile run today. It was meant to have 10 x 100m strides in it but after 5 I had a horrendous stitch which I could barely even walk with, so once I recovered I did the I made the other 5 a bit shorter. It was hard going but only took 49 mins which is good for me.

On the finding time to run subject something I sometimes do (did it today) is if we are all going out somewhere not too far away in the car I'll take my running stuff or my bike and then run or cycle home while dh drives home with the boys. It doesn't seem to impact on dh so much that way (not that he dislikes spending time with the boys but I still feel a bit guilty sometimes)

Driving sorry to hear about your friends sister Sad My smear was due last November Blush your post has made me set a reminder in my phone to call and organise this tomorrow.

I did a fast 5 miles with the dog in the rain today. We went off road. Puddles, mud, the lot. I was filthy (so was the dog) and it felt great. I so needed it today and I felt so much better when I got home. Cooking a Sunday roast now for dh. Am paranoid about my Garmin in the rain, BIL ran into the sea with his and it got wet and it died. Keep mine covered when it rains....I love it so much Grin

Welcome to the new posters Smile

squix · 19/06/2011 15:59

driving - I had a 'why the flip am I doing this' moment out on my run this morning. A slow 9 miles. I was really struggling to even finish, let alone maintain a reasonable pace. Miles 6-7 were really hard work. I just thought - why bother? And feeling guilty about about being away from DD and Dh. I think I am suffering from not having any races booked in until October so I'll look for some more over the summer - I need a nice 10k or 5 miler around September when I'm back from my hols. And my October race is 10 miles - so I know the distance is doable and it's speed that I really need to work on. So I might just switch to fortnightly or 10 daily long runs and focus more on speed - intervals and tempos and hills.

Also I am having real problems 'feeling' how fast I am going - I think I am belting round but look at the Garmin and it says the opposite. The Garmin has become like a really honest best friend - the sort that isn't afraid to say 'yup, your bum does look big in that!' Grin

Just been out for a lovely Japanse lunch so off to catch up on the Sunday papers before a busy week starts tomorrow.

Wheelybug · 19/06/2011 16:36

How did the race go science ?

Sorry about your friend driving - so hard.

cestlavie - I only get to go out with DH running when we are at parents or have parents staying. As it is, DH's mum was here last weekend, we were there briefly this w/e and we'll be at my parents next weekend.

So we managed a 7 miler this morning - was meant to be 8 but instead we did a very hilly 7 miles and at a good speed so I think made up for the lack of the extra mile.

I run 3-4 times a week, at 4 times I do about 22 miles at the moment, at 3 times 19 (although only 18 this week - 6,5 and 7).

Hope the injuries sort themselves out... and thanks for the cheaper shock absorber tips. Off to the debenhams website.

MrsWednesday · 19/06/2011 17:42

I ended up doing 10 miles this afternoon rather than this morning, and it was a bit heavy-legged and plodding too but I'm blaming too much alcohol, too little sleep and the residual effects of giving blood (Hmm given that it was 10 days ago!)

DrNo, I have done the Abbey Dash before and the Leeds half several times too and although it would be great to run with you, I just can't face Kirkstall Road ever again! I have to travel down it every single day on the bus to work so I know it far too intimately Grin Could you be persuaded to do the Bradford half as well? It's in October - it's very hilly.

Driving, I'd say 1x3 but I'm just guessing.

Vicar, sorry you are still struggling. Can you stretch it out at all?

Fishie, I had achilles tendonitis so I'm not sure it's the same thing - I had to rest completely for about 3 weeks then build up gradually, with lots of rest, icing and stretching.

Cestlavie that does indeed sound like the perfect run. I've had a couple like that where I actually took photos of the river and the woods on my phone - it helps remind me of the freedom and joy of being outside when I'm stuck in an office or boring meeting.

My DH hates running (he thinks it is boring) but he goes mountain biking so weekends are often a logistical nightmare, especially as both DSs have football to fit in too.

Debi, I do similar things to try and squeeze in a run without impacting too much on the family - today DH had to go into work, so he took the boys with him and I ran to meet them. This is also why I like running home from work, as I get my exercise out of the way before I've even collected the kids from school.

As the boys are out playing football in the garden I'm going to try and fit in a few stretches and stomach exercises now (will then lie on the sofa and eat chocolate later).

Happy running.

DrNortherner · 19/06/2011 18:47

Yeah I'd consider the Bradford half. Are you signed up?

MrsWednesday · 19/06/2011 18:51

I am - it's quite cheap, £18 I think.

here you go

Although there are some tough hills the scenery is amazing and it finishes in a lovely park too. It made me re-evaluate my impressions of Bradford!

notyummy · 19/06/2011 19:31

Hi all! Can't keep up - so much running.

Driving - sorry to hear about your friends sister. So hard. My best friend and bridesmaid is now in full remission after battling cervical cancer. She got it at 29 abd none of the risk factors. She had to have a radical hysterectomy and had premature menopause, but is still with us and fund raises via running for the oncology centre (Beatson Centre in Glasgow) that treated her. Its an awful disease.

C'est - DH and I circuit train together (like this morning!) in our conservatory/'family room' but don't run together, for two reasons - the first is childcare. The second is that I am hugely competitive and it REALLY fecks me off that he is faster than me (10k he is around 41 mins when I am high 40s, HM he is 1 36 and I am 1 44 on a good day.) He also runs in a completely different style to me - goes off fast and then gradually slows down throughout a distance, whilst I am usually faster in the second half. I would end up throwing up 15 minutes in!!

Managed a 10 miler yesterday and it felt good, however the underside of my heel is now sore and I am worried about plantar fasciitis. Anyone had any experience of this?

drivingmisscrazy · 19/06/2011 19:35

Hello all - Debi thanks - I don't feel particularly down about it, although this morning was not a great run. I meant more that given that I am not going to be fast I sometimes wonder why I spend time worrying about splits and stuff, rather than just running because I can IYSWIM

DrNo no greater love hath woman for her Garmin...perhaps you could get it some wet weather gear :o I think they are waterproof even submerged for about an hour (that's what my bumpf said, anyway); your BIL introduced salt water to it, which kills all machines, pretty much. Glad you had a good run this morning.

squix I have that too - often I can't feel a correlation between paces and effort - faster ones sometimes feel easier than slower ones. This is allegedly a sign of relatively poor aerobic fitness, but I've no idea if there's anything in that tbh. And do you have your Garmin set to display lap pace? If it's showing continuous pace it will be all over the place. There's a techie reason for this that I instantly erased from my brain, on the grounds that I have little enough storage space in my head as it is.

When I uploaded my Garmin stats I'd actually run almost a mile further than I'd realised :) so even though it was a choppy run without any good consistent pacing, I did do an OK distance. Then pancakes, went to allotment in the afternoon - first crops coming (potatoes, strawberries, broad beans); there's a load of peas that I suspect the birds are eating so they haven't germinated, but everything else doing quite nicely now :) DD 'helped' with some weeds and watering. She's actually pretty good for a 2.5 year old...
