a thread for runners to chat, debate, share tips, triumphs (and the occasional disaster!) - new runners particularly welcome, the only thing that's required is enthusiasm (and a pair of running shoes)

futurity - go you!

june - the very fact you do other sorts of training means you will have a good mindset about how to approach running. Running can be quite technical but if you cross train you will soon find how other sorts of cross training can be of relevance eg in working the core (pilates in particular) or stability (yoga for instance) or simply in the stretching. A HM is not so different from a 10K. The marathon is a different beast altogether though and I would suggest getting a few years running in your legs to avoid injuries before contemplating 26.2 miles.

Wheelybug · 16/06/2011 22:14

Sorry -I shouldn't try and be technological - if you got a Facebook thing from me suggesting a friend - its sciencebint. I thought I was sneding her a list of all the runners, and explained who everyone was but looks like I sent her as a friend request to everyone else. Oops.

drivingmisscrazy · 16/06/2011 22:17

wheely - it doesn't matter - did the job extremely efficiently, actually! Poor DP is feeling dreadful - seems like a stomach bug type thing, but no idea where she could have got it. A bit worrying, really -

No problem Wheelybug...have added her :)

YeahThatsTheBadger · 16/06/2011 22:30

I feel distinctly amateur compared to everyone else!

I was planning to go out for a run this evening but had to wait for my mum and dad to get here. My dad is staying the night as he's coming to Ireland with us tomorrow and DH is playing a gig in London tonight. But they've only just arrived so the run is off.

Happy running this weekend!

DebiTheScot · 16/06/2011 22:57

Argh now I'm confused. I thought the request thing was from futurity. I was trying to make a list of real & mn names! Need to go and look at everyone's profiles to match you all up.

June2009 · 16/06/2011 23:12

debbie are we friends on fb?initials SM. am on wheely and futurity and dr no (only from tbe last couple of days) and some more people from here havw requested me ass wll and i accepted ( so hopefully from here and not random strangers ;)) but i don't know whois who. wheely if you could send me the list that would be great :) i've requested science bint as well.

i did abs on the swiss ball with my trainer and ouch I can feel it now, i wonder what its going to be like tomorrow!!

i just wanted to add that the support on this thread is really great and i am glad i found you! i wouldn't had the courage to sign up to a 10k or a half ( i'll be cursing you the day after;))

take care!

peachsmuggler · 17/06/2011 00:07

Blimey Futurity, you are on fire! Entering races all over the shop!!

Am toying with the idea of entering something next Spring to get me motivated to get out there after baby arrives. Will have a look around.

Driving, DD2 is 3 and 3 months. Seems all her little friends are in beds but she is very attached to her cot. She asked to sleep in the big bed again tonight but I was going out so persuaded her to sleep in the cot as I wanted to get her settled quickly before leaving her with MIL. Said she could have another go on Saturday. Hope your DP gets better soon. Must be awful to just get over the ms and then get a bug, poor thing.

sfx am with you on the thong thing. They are an excellent invention for moving ecoli from your butt to vagina and not to be trusted!! Woman in the restaurant must have been mad Moshi. Not very long after I started going put with DP, his mum gave me a Xmas present of some pretty see through underwear and two of the tiniest thongs I have ever seen in my life! Mortified doesn't cover it.

ThatVikRinA22 · 17/06/2011 00:38

hi ladies - can i ask how long it took you to hit a reasonable pace when you where newbie runners? i am frustrated at my slowness but i know i am expecting far too much too soon, and also

how long did it take to get from 5k to 10k roughly please? how do you do it?

i will be concentrating on managing 5k without stopping and within a reasonable time first of course.

ibbydibby · 17/06/2011 07:07

Sorry am getting waylaid in RL and feeling a bit of a fraud having signed up to the list yet keep not being able to run. Plans to go to running club were scuppered last night as had an appt for both DCs for eye tests (took an hour) and then had to go to school uniform shop for DS1 as uniform for his school was reduced yesterday only (suspect they do this with all schools so that they can focus on one school per day or something?) Anyway had not eaten for ages, so could not go.

Vicar not sure how long it took me to get from 5k to 10k, think I just decided that after several 5k RFLs I wanted to go a bit further. The thing that helped me most in the early days especially was keeping a record of my runs, which meant I could look back and see how I had improved.

peachsmuggler · 17/06/2011 07:15

Vicar, when I originally started running a few years ago I built up to 10k over about 3 months I think but can't really remember how. I wasn't particularly serious about running at the time. When I started again after DD I could run 5k and then built up to 10k at a 6 week running course. The course was one day a week at which we built up our distance and then had to do 2 other shorter runs during the week as "homework". I think you are doing the right thing though. Concentrate on your running the whole 5k and then start building up from there. Good luck!

Sorry you didn't manage to get out last night ibby, life has a habit of getting in the way sometimes eh? Smile

futurity · 17/06/2011 07:26

peach ..won't be adding any more for a while..I just wanted to get some in the calendar to give me something to aim towards otherwise I could easily come up with excuses not to run...it's happened before where I didn't run for months and it made me grumpy and it was hard to get going again...determined not to let that happen again. Also I feel more part of a running community now what with running club and here...I feel like I am not a fraud when I say I am a "runner"Smile

futurity · 17/06/2011 07:28

ibby you are not a fraud ..we all know how easy it is for life to get in the way sometimes x

drivingmisscrazy · 17/06/2011 08:37

I sympathise with the not getting out there at the moment runners; I am feeling weary and demotivated, and I'm not sure how to get back on track. I've been out twice this week, would have gone today, but have mild version of DP's bug, plus it's raining, which if I was on form wouldn't bother me. I know the only solution is just to go, but I just feel frustrated by the fact that I am so slow, and the only discernible benefit is that I am thinner. Obviously, not running at all won't make me faster (although possibly fatter). I''ve a lot of work on too, and am just feeling a bit overwhelmed by everything...

OP posts:
drivingmisscrazy · 17/06/2011 08:52

obviously that post made me feel a bit better - running kit was lying on the floor so I thought, sod it, I'll put it on and see how I go.

OP posts:
ibbydibby · 17/06/2011 09:40

that's good, driving, how far did you go, how do you feel now?

Thanks for reassurances re fraudulent membership of the thread. However my DCs are now 14 and 10, and I have beautiful countryside at my doorstep, so fewer barriers than most of you when it comes to going out for a run. In my defence I also have piles of exam marking to wade through, piles of ironing to steam through, hunt for stuff for DS2 to take away tonight on camping weekend (including fancy dress - only got kit list yesterday).

And have just sent letter of complaint to DS1's head of year, and copied it to headteacher (a first for me) so wondering if there will be any phone calls about that....

MoshiMoshi · 17/06/2011 09:50

Added more to FB from requests and posted a clue to who I am just now. Perhaps we could all do this until we remember who everyone is? The support is great here but I don't always find time to drop by but a quick update via FB is easier.

Do not beat yourselves up over not running. Getting going again is simple and very effective - just one run usually eradicates the negativity and sets you off in the right direction. Take heart and keep positive!

MoshiMoshi · 17/06/2011 09:54

driving - the BEST time to get out the door in running kit is when things are overwhelming you so you can slow everything down and get the extra oxygen to your brain. I find it calms me down and helps me think things through. Hope the run is a good one!

futurity · 17/06/2011 10:31

driving hope you feel better after your run. I know EXACTLY what you mean about being frustrated about being slow. I was last in the half marathon out of all the people I knew doing it and last night at club I could not keep up after a while. They weren't even going silly fast..I just run out of stamina (or something..not sure of the terms!). I am REALLY going to try and not let it get me down....I am running for me not running against them and have to remember this is a hobby and not a career!

drivingmisscrazy · 17/06/2011 10:59

thanks folks - you really are the salt of the earth, you lot. A nice steady 6 miles (in the nice steady drizzle) with fast-ish mile at the end. It felt good.

futurity you're so right - I'm exactly the same, and if I obsess about speed (or lack of it) then I stop enjoying it, and that's why I run...I suppose I am used in most areas of my life to coming first or top, and being better than average at things, and so it's hard, but a great lesson in humility for me to realise that for my running, only effort counts.

OP posts:
drivingmisscrazy · 17/06/2011 11:07

god, that sounded dreadful! all I mean is that achieving things has been a driving force in my life, so it hurts that I struggle to sustain a 10 minute mile....

OP posts:
squix · 17/06/2011 11:20

Had a busy week so far - seem to have missed lots on here too! Have only been able to get out running once which was an early morning before work run - I always find early morning (6 to 7) runs really hard and no matter how hard I run my pace is always very slow. Work?s just got really busy - three big projects on the go and we are recruiting because we are so busy - so that?s taking up loads of my time.

Hello to all the newcomers to the thread - it becomes almost as addictive as running is Smile

Sports bra?s - Shock absorber in a back size bigger than normal for me, with a crop top or another sports bra on top. I find I need a bigger back size so that I can fill my lungs. I am a size 30/32 D/E so need some support, particularly as I am not as firm as I used to be Grin. I have a real problem with normal bras at the moment. I find the wires really rub in the middle of my chest but have a real struggle to find non wired bra?s in my size. John Lewis has some but they?re not often in stock. I have on occasion resorted to wearing sports bra?s instead.

Parent?s sports days - should be fun next year. DD starts school next year (2012) and I know at least 2 other runner parents and 2 triathlete parents that?ll have kids in her class - won?t be competitive at all Grin

notyummy - thanks for the reminder about the sunscreen - DH asked me the other night if I had been using fake tan as my arms were more tanned than his - I had to remind him that I spend far more time outside than he does - even if it as a result of pushing up the sleeves of my long sleeved t shirt. It sort of creeps on you doesn?t it. My normal moisturiser for my face has an SPF 15 anyway but I always forget about my arms and ankles and back of my neck.

Moshi - you must be so glad be out running again, sounds as though your house keeper is working out. How?s your mum doing?

My birthday next week (one of the big ?OOOO? ones) and I got my first birthday present this week - a subscription to Runners World from my Dad.

Oh and a quick question for those of you that run in the evenings - what time do you run and do you run before / after your evening meal?

I don?t use FB much but if some one PMs me their details I will add them and try to work out who everyone else is - my initials are VDC and my profile picture is a Barbie cake - all my own work!

drivingmisscrazy · 17/06/2011 11:53

hi all - I've done a fb note with the fb and mn names matched up - I got to about 10 and then started to get confused. Feel free to add yourself: it's here
