Ack. Had a slightly longer (and exposed) run into work this morning in properly stormy and windy weather. Had forgotten just how hard it is running into the wind...!

sfxmum · 12/11/2010 16:08

I did go in the end by myself short one

cestlavie wind is hard work

MoshiMoshi · 12/11/2010 16:23

gold - could you have run it instead? Makes it shorter and gets a nice little run in for you...

OP posts:
MoshiMoshi · 12/11/2010 16:33

Sorry, not shorter, meant to say "quicker"!

OP posts:
notyummy · 12/11/2010 17:41

Did 3 1/2 mile short run today. Felt longer in this wind! Did a 30 minute circuit session afterwards to try and balance out the exercise routine.

nappyaddict · 12/11/2010 20:05

cestlavie Did you enjoy it or wish you hadn't gone Grin

Goldberry · 12/11/2010 22:24

Nice idea, Moshi - I could have run the journeys without dd, but tricky with the buggy on the narrow, bumpy pavements. In the end I got a lift back for the last journey with dd's friend's mum, who managed to fit all 3 of us and the buggy in her huge car! Will run tomorrow if I can tear myself away from my new obsession - knitting Blush!

sfxmum · 14/11/2010 15:26

oh knitting that is something I like doing but haven't for a while, will pop to John Lewis Tuesday when I am in Kingston and get some wool

out for slowish 4 miles in the rain, marvellous Grin

hope everyone is well

hatwoman · 14/11/2010 18:14

Hi everyone. I dragged myself out to do a race today - 7 miles with 1000ft climb. It was a bit of an effort - I've been very lax since the long race but it was great to get out there. It was a good atmosphere, nicely organised. but it was a bit of a reverse route - most fell races I've done start at the bottom - you start with a horrible climb, but at the top are often rewarded with a great view - and then you leg it down to the bottom - which is great fun. This one started above a steep valley - so the first bit was down hill, then quite flat along the stream, finishing with the awful climb. so it was hard work! and lacked my favourite bit of flinging yourself down the hill when you know you're nearly home and can afford to use up all you reserves.

notyummy · 14/11/2010 18:54

Sounds like good work! My one and only fell race was done 5 years ago with a bad hangover. Not a good experience! Am aiming for an 8 miler tomorrow. Did a circuits session today, and some time on the cross trainer yesterday. Frustrating to see my mileage drop, but until I have seen a physio I am loathe to possibly make my hip worse.

MoshiMoshi · 15/11/2010 09:29

Well done, hat! Great to see you racing despite the terrible weather.

yummy - i think you are being wise on keeping mileage low. See that physio as I think it sounds like your sacroiliac joint is not right. Sounds very much like (one of) mine problems and it certainly results in a lot of referred issues when I do intervals or higher mileage.

Back to gentle running today and Bootcamp. Hurray!

OP posts:
hatwoman · 15/11/2010 12:39

bit stiff today! obviously I was trying hard. nothing at all to do with lack of training and lack-a-daisical approach to warming up and stretching.

MoshiMoshi · 15/11/2010 13:39

Excuse me everybody! Can I have your attention please?

Are we agreed that we would like to engineer a meeting in Richmond Park for a gentle trot and indulgent post-run lunch/tea/meal of some description afterwards? And did we want to do this before Christmas (as we lose highfibre to sunny Australia otherwise)?

Thoughts welcome....

Well done to everyonefor running in terrible weather and well done Hat for the race !!

Did nothing last week due to bug turning into a stomach one so back to it tomorrow in the gym.

Rather annoyed as had planned a circuit of RP on saturday whilst dd1 was at a party in Ham - am going to have to find another time.

Which leads me swiftly on .. Am up for a meet up/run thing etc. Not sure how likely pre-christmas is now. Eek. But open to suggestions !

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 15/11/2010 16:39

haven't been on here nor run for a couple of weeks as have also had lurgy.... plus both dc's have had it too (both back to school now :))

Quick question for Moshi as I also have asthma and this is my first nasty bug since I started running....

fever just about gone, pf just about 80% with inhaler doubled but fairly impressive cough still lurking (I cough rather than wheeze in any case)....

is it worth waiting a bit longer before attempting a run?

really want to run again but also want to avoid making things worse as that would mean GP, ABs and pred - which I have managed to avoid for almost 2 years, and I can't afford the time off work sick either - too busy by far

MoshiMoshi · 15/11/2010 20:04

putthehamster - I really wouldn't want to advise not knowing what your condition is like. If it were me, I would go only if I felt that the cough was no longer lurking in my chest and was just residual lung clearing stuff. I too have doubled my brown inhaler and am hoping that getting running etc again won't trigger anything. But you never quite know with asthma do you...? Still, two weeks of being inactive and ill is enough to drive me insane so I am willing to get back out there and risk it! Good luck with your recovery. I am staying wrapped up well with plenty of layers and not pushing myself for a couple of weeks, so will just be doing low volume easy runs building it up slowly.

OP posts:
putthehamsterbackinitscage · 16/11/2010 07:41

Moshi - sorry if that was a but heavy - you're the first regular runner I've had contact with that is asthmatic - I'm ok at managing my asthma but haven't run after a bug like this before especially over winter, and the best advice previously from my gp was to "avoid pollution and cold air"

Am feeling better today than for a couple of weeks so might give it a try tomorrow....

MoshiMoshi · 16/11/2010 11:44

putthehamster - I didn't go running today as planned having felt how cold it was doing the school run and feeling my wheezing return. How are you today? I think the cold means any exercise should ideally be done in the warmth of a gym. Keep well.

notyummy · 16/11/2010 11:56

Managed 5 miles yesterday and only a slightly achy hip last night. Think I will stick to no more than 5/6 miles until I see the physio....I at last have an appointment for next week. I have a gym quality cross trainer at home which is at least something, and a whole load of fairly punishing DVDs, so have no excuse for being completely idol!

Wheelybug · 16/11/2010 16:27

Another asthma sufferer here ! Although no longer (touch wood etc) as bad as you guy sound - no major flare ups for 3 years. But cold one of my triggers so definitely feeling it some cold mornings of late. But then that is the advantage of doing 2/3 rds of my running in a gym. Despite the mindless boredom.

Was back to the gym after last week's break and did 5 miles. Always easier after a break I find - I had clearly forgotten treadmill boredom !!

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 17/11/2010 18:00

Ok do I was optimistic about feeling better yesterday, cold still lurking, cough has a distinctive wheeziness and I haven't managed a run.....

I am hoping it goes the right way soon without a trip to the gp - would like to get out for a couple of runs this week as am away with work next week so no chance for a few days then

And then just when I thought we were all getting over this bug, another call from school - to collect DD as she is "not well at all".... She had only been back 2 days after being off since wednesday though she is well enough to snack and watch tv......

MrsWednesday · 17/11/2010 22:07

Another runner with asthma here - thought mine had pretty much gone away as I haven't had any bother for a few months but went out last night in the cold, ran up a big hill (by the side of the ring road so lots of traffic fumes) and had an attack so had to walk the rest of the way home (foolishly hadn't taken a phone, my inhaler or anything else with me).

Notyummy, hope all goes well with the physio - would be interested to know what they say about your hip as mine is v sore too.

Moshi, hope you manage to get out for a gentle run soon, you must be climbing the walls.

All these bugs and germs, hope everyone all feels better soon. Bloody winter has come round fast, doesn't seem ten minutes since the last one - all that planning which dull road route to run in the dark, being extra careful not to slip over etc etc.

peachsmuggler · 19/11/2010 21:53

Moshi- yes yes yes to run in Richmond park before Xmas!!
Can do anytime before 18th dec or any time after 4th jan to get the ball rolling.

Am planning 6 miles tomorrow which hasn't been seen round these parts for a shockingly long time.

Rollergirl1 · 20/11/2010 23:11

Hey people. Not sure if have been on this thread in the past or another. Am still trying to run but finding the cold and the dark evenings a real hindrance. Trying to do 5/6 miles twice a week, although is more like once a week lately. Anyway, am also up for pre-xmas run in richmond park. Let me know the details!

Goldberry · 23/11/2010 09:36

Hi Rollergirl. Know what you mean. I don't mind the cold so much, it's the dark I don't like. I really neglected my running last Christmas. Felt really sluggish and put on loads of weight, so I was determined not to let that happen this year. Must try harder!

I'd be up for a run in Richmond Park in theory. Will keep an eye on suggested dates and see if I can fit in a trip to London!
