Spotted 'Feet in the Clouds' at the library today, so very pleased with myself. Can't wait to start reading it.

Well done on your run cestlavie - I'll definitely be taking the advice you gave me earlier as it's obviously working for you!

Going to try and run 8 miles tomorrow morning as a confidence boost towards my 10 mile race, though will obviously be doing it quite slowly still.

Hope all the cake gives you lots of energy for your long run Moshi!

peachsmuggler · 18/03/2011 17:36

Didn't even make it out of house today Blush .Weather vile.

Good luck with your 8 miler thecoo Am sure you'll be fine. Like you said, just nice and slow. Hope the weather is good!

pawsnclaws · 19/03/2011 09:57

Hi all, just had a gentle jog yesterday - chest definitely getting better. I feel I've wasted the last week though! Did lots of energetic dancing last night - went to see Katy Perry - not my usual thing at all, but she was surprisingly good! I reckon me and my friend were the only people over 40 though ...... Smile.

cestlavie was that 13 miles in 1 hour 45? If so you're pretty nifty. I think my next challenge might be a half in under 2 hours, last time I did one it was just over 2.

Good luck to all doing longer runs today, I think I've only got 10 miles tomorrow - will see how I feel. What am I going to do with all this spare time?! I'm off to some sort of outdoor aerial adventure centre today with ds2 for a party - lucky boy.

pawsnclaws · 19/03/2011 10:46

Oh and a belated happy birthday to Moshi's DD!

thecoo · 19/03/2011 12:48

What a gorgeous day for running! Managed my 8 mile run no problem this morning (turned out to be 8.4 miles actually as my iphone's GPS is a bit patchy around here). It took me 1hr 42 mins which is what I want to run the 10 miles in, so with 12 weeks to go I feel like there's hope!

Quite tired now, so having a coffee and a Twirl while I put my feet up and read Feet in the Clouds...

Glad you're feeling better now pawsnclaws

Hope everyone else is enjoying lovely weather too.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 19/03/2011 14:42

Glad you are beginning to feel better paws. Not long now till Brighton!

Well done on you run thecoo, you have nearly covered the distance alreadySmile

It is indeed a gorgeous day for running. I did 15 miles, most of them at marathon pace or 10:15mm. Felt quite tough tbh, my legs feel permanently tired at the moment. The,weather was lovely though, and it was the highest tide I have ever seen by the (tidal) river, really amazing to see.

Have since been baking with ds2, he loves baking and it occurred to me I've been too tired after my long runs to do it recently so made the effort today. Now we have scrummy gingernuts and oaty shortbread to scoffGrin

Hope everyone else has a good weekend running.

DrNortherner · 19/03/2011 14:45

Afternoon All!

Moshi glad your dd liked her cake, bet it tasted yummy.

cestlavie how far was your run? If it was 13 miles that is a fab time! Well, any distance is fab at that time.

doyouthini what is the problem with your foot? I have started with a bit of pain in my left foot and after googling lots think I have Plantar Fasciitis. Since getting serious with my running I have had shin splints, pulled a calf muscle and now this. Do we just have to accept aches and pains as par for the course?

I have new trainers so no idea why I got this, think my calfs (calves?) might be a little tight. Anyone know how long this will take to sod off? Runners World say between 2 weeks and 1 year Hmm.......

GORGEOUS day here today. Did an ARmed Foreces Fitness session this morning, not much running but loads of core work today. Doing an 8 miler tomorrow with my SIL and a friend.

BTW started reading Born to run and I am struggling to get into it......Blush

Hope you all have a great weekend
Smile

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 19/03/2011 15:25

I think plantar fascitis is my problem too DrNo. It started in my heel when I wore converse to work, I could barely walk on it. It got better slowly over a few days using ice and more supportive footwear. Now it's back but more along the side than in the heel. It's less painful when running than walking so I shall carry onSmile It is less painful today but still a bit sore post run.

I also have new shoes so it's not that. The camber from road running may be a factor. I notice it more when I'm running on roads where the camber is bad.

The other thing I have found which helps is stretching the calf muscle on the stairs by gripping with my toes and dropping my heels.

I hope yours improves soon. It's annoying isn't it?

DrNortherner · 19/03/2011 17:15

Yes it is annoying. I just had an hours kip on the sofa and was reminded of the pain when I got up to walk to the kitchen. Ouch. Will try ice and the stretch you suggested. Will carry on running too. It's just annoying rather than excruciating.

Have read Ibroprofen and gel is good too.

Lets hope we improve soon!

backwardpossom · 19/03/2011 19:18

Ooh, I had no idea this thread existed! Hello everyone! :)

I'm training for half marathon in Edinburgh on May 22nd. Have started upping the mileage a bit on my weekend run (up to 9 miles at the mo) but have a 10k tomorrow and another next week. Then it's really time to get serious!

Good luck to all who are training at the mo, and hope that injuries get better soon.

MrsWednesday · 19/03/2011 19:47

Also managed to get out in the sunshine today, it was glorious. I managed 9.5 miles, slow and steady and a bit achy but nothing too major.

Saw my physio yesterday and she strapped up my foot with tape to try and sort out my sore heel/arch plantar faciitis problem - wish I knew how to do it because it definitely helped when I was running today.

Incidentally, Doyouthinktheysawus, my physio (aka my new best friend, I'm spending so much time with her at the mo!) said that Converse are really bad footwear, too flat apparently. Orthopedic Clarks shoes with a slight heel are the way forward...

Does anyone use a foam roller for stretching too? Am doing it on my calf and ITB (yes I'm falling to bits...)

Welcome backwardpossom, sounds like you're nearly all set for the half marathon and you've still got a while to go!

Belated happy birthday Paws and Moshi's DD. Happy running all, preferably painfree.

pawsnclaws · 19/03/2011 20:17

Hi all, just wanted to add that with the foot problem, I find that if I stretch it before I get out of bed in the morning it seems better. So you lie on your back with your feet pointing upwards (at right angles with your ankle) - similar to what doyou says with the stairs. Also when you ice if you can freeze a plastic cup of water and roll it under your foot that helps. The good news with mine is that it gets better as I run, but can be really painful after sitting on the sofa for too long Blush.

Welcome backwardpossom!

pawsnclaws · 19/03/2011 20:19

Ah yes Converse - also flipflops as well, anything that causes you to grip with the forward part of your feet I think. A bad road camber causes me all sorts of problems as I think I have one leg longer than the other.

Anyone tried those five-toed shoe type things? They look amazing!

backwardpossom · 19/03/2011 22:36

Thanks for the welcome! :)

DrNortherner · 20/03/2011 08:54

Welcome backwardpossom Add your race to the list that appears below in this thread, then we know who is running what and when.

Paws and Mrs Wednesday I did a 5 miler today and my foot felt very sore this morning when walking around, but as you say it eased off when running and now I am back it is throbbing again. At home I live in Ugg's, bet these aren't helping, have a pair of converse too....We'll all be wandering round in seriously unflattering shoes from Clarks!

MoshiMoshi · 20/03/2011 09:17

Hello all! Firstly, welcome to possom! If you want to add your race on 22 May to the list (check back for most recent version) we will all do our best to support you in your training and your race!

Well done to, thecoo on running your 8 miler! Do you usually refuel with a Twix and coffee afterwards or was that after the refueling strategy had taken place? In case you were unaware, recovery is one of the often overlooked aspects of running and includes appropriate food and drink taken on board during or after the run (within 30 minutes I think). The general advice is to have some carbohydrate based nutrition eg a drink of something like a glass of milk or a Lucozade Sport with something solid like a bagel with peanut butter or cereal/sports bar. If you do this you should find each run gets easier as your body is better equipped with restored glycogen levels.

Well, my plan went well yesterday after my disastrous HM at Bath. I arrived at Dorney Lake early and after collecting my number started off on a progressive 6 mile warm up run with the intention to do 20 miles in total including the race. I managed to fit in two laps of the course (6 miles) before heading to the race briefing just before 9am. Annoyingly, we then had a mile to get to the start line and a half hour wait until the gun went off which wasn't ideal as the plan was to do a 20 mile run non-stop. The race plan was to use it as a pacing practice training run and run at my intended marathon pace (7m20s per mile). I averaged 7m19s for the 13.1 miles so it went quite well although the slowest one was 7m30s where I seemed to lose concentration at 10 miles and then, annoyed with myself, race the final 3 miles at or just under 7m/m. Total time 1h35m.

Shin very sore today so will ice and elevate (ha! ha! ha! Say the DCs) and hope everything alright.

thecoo · 20/03/2011 11:32

Moshi the Twix and coffee wasn't part of my recovery plan Wink - I'd already finished my run a couple of hours earlier and had peanut butter on toast when I got back, as well as a little diluted juice.

I also went out and bought some Sainsbury's isotonic drink (was the only one without aspartame bizarrely enough) for next time, as I sweated LOADS - could feel the dry powder on my temple afterwards!

Glad you ran well yesterday, though a shame about the prolonged start. I'm still amazed at the thought of running 20 miles non-stop!!!

Pawsnclaws I tried on a pair of the Vibram Fivefingers when I was in New York recently. They weren't as comfy as I expected - and my smaller toes are too short so didn't fill the toe bits properly - but loads of people swear by them. I do have a pair of Terraplana vivo barefoot shoes, but all these types of shoes are really flat, so may not be ideal for you if the flatness of Converses is a problem.

Should I be adding my 10 mile race to the list? Is it just a matter of copy and paste?

Got family round today and having a rest from running after my long one yesterday

sfxmum · 20/03/2011 11:41

hello all, lovely to see so many new 'faces' and so many great plans for races

my recovery continues slowly but steadily
however I seem to be getting some kind of knee problem

so asking moshi or Wheely I seem to recall one of you visited a physio around these parts? if so could you recommend anyone please TIA

happy running all

MoshiMoshi · 20/03/2011 11:56

sfx - try this lot! Running focused abs very helpful.

www.moveclinics.com

thecoo - ha ha! Glad the Twirl wasn't your refueling strategy!

OP posts:
pawsnclaws · 20/03/2011 12:01

Goodness, well done Moshi - that must have been a confidence boost.

thecoo, yes just cut and paste - though I have awful problems doing this on my phone!

sfx that happens to me too, sometimes I feel I resolve one injury and the problem moves up or down my leg. Stick with it though, will be worth it to get you running like you want to again.

This thread will be finished soon, nearly at 1000 posts - who'll be first with the new one?!

sfxmum · 20/03/2011 12:04

thanks both Smile

MoshiMoshi · 20/03/2011 14:49

Hey everybody! Come and join in on the new thread I have just created. Hope you don't that I started a new one. I have tried to make it comfortable and cosy with as much encouragement as possible. I am sure there there are a few races missing so why don't you take the chance to add them to the list now? See you there! Smile

OP posts:
MoshiMoshi · 20/03/2011 14:50

should have said don't MIND that I started a new one... and there is a surplus THERE for some reason. Ah well...

OP posts:
MoshiMoshi · 20/03/2011 14:51

Oooh, too tempting to leave the last post empty. Now, if I use it that means we HAVE to relocate to the new place !
